2857 ratings | 168807 views
In this episode of The Piedmont Motion Picture Show, I wanted to dig a little deeper into iPhone Filmmaking and show you the 8 steps that I took in order to obtain the cinematic iPhone footage with FiLMiC Pro I posted in this video: https://youtu.be/LqHjoEojc8M in the video I put together about shooting cinematic iPhone footage with FilMiC Pro, I only showed the results I was able to get; this week, I want to show you 8 steps for cinematic iPhone footage with FilMiC Pro App. Follow this link to buy the app, and try it for yourself: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/filmic-pro/id436577167?mt=8 You can also visit the official site for FilMiC Pro here: http://www.filmicpro.com iPhone filmmaking is becoming more prevalent everyday. "They" say that the best camera is the one we have with us, and we always have our cellphones nearby. Smartphone cameras are becoming increasingly viable ways of filming some really great footage, and with the help of the Filmic Pro app, we can get even more control of the camera settings to really get some impressive footage! Hey guys! What are some other video topics that you would like to see covered as far as mobile filmmaking is concerned? Also, be sure to share your mobile projects and a brief description of your experience with the community below! Just don't spam please!
krista dalton (2 days ago)
What if you don’t know how to color correct? Very new at filming and editing. Would you still film in flat?
If you’re not comfortable with color correcting you can apply a lut to your footage. It kind of takes the guesswork out for you. Or, you can just film in natural if you want to bypass the color correcting process all together. Here’s my video on how to use luts: iPhone Filmmaking - FiLMiC Pro LUTS Vol.1 https://youtu.be/sypPmmIv02g

Are you using a laptop as a monitor? How do you do it, becasue that would be incredibly handy!
Yes I am! I use a mini display port cable to run my MacBook to my iMac. Basically just use my iMac as a monitor.
BlazeyFAM (2 months ago)
Good stuff, also use 2:39:1 for widescreen and stretch the 1080p file to fit the ratio, this way you don't get artifacts with artifical black bars. Subbed.
SansC production (3 months ago)
Hi thank you so much for this very useful tutorial. My favorite setting is to play with depth of field when using FilmicPro. And it becomes possible with an iPhone. It’s so amazing and it changes the way to shoot. Like that in Nice, french Riviera : https://youtu.be/8Z_uKnAeyqQ

Sajid Iqbal (4 months ago)
You should create the sequence in the aspect ratio that you want, for example 2.39:1, instead of using PNG file. Or better yet, shoot in FilmicPro with black bars so that while your composition and framing is better
DJ Solstice (5 months ago)
But why 24fps? When I shoot in that it always looks blocky and not smooth shots. Am I doing something wrong?
DJ Solstice (5 months ago)
Piedmont Motion Picture it just doesn’t look smooth at all. I’m just shooting with my iPhone X. In 4K. The 60 FPS looks silky smooth and way better tho
Piedmont Motion Picture (5 months ago)
24 fps is the standard for cinema quality. Is the footage looking distorted in your editing program?

You skip to many steps....how to i pull of the adjust layer option?
Piedmont Motion Picture (4 months ago)
To add an adjustment layer, click the new item button located at the bottom of your project bin in adobe premiere.

Piedmont Motion Picture (5 months ago)
Very nice job, especially for your first attempt! You did a great job with the color grade here, and the shot selection. I think for your next one you should try to incorporate some slo motion shots and maybe throw in a few gimbal shots if you have access to one. Just remember to not over do it! I look forward to seeing more work! -Ry

Good evening. I'm trying to use this app that by the way is very good and I can not. It's for android.v 5. I usually shoot and play on my cell phone but when I send it to the pc it only plays a small part of the video.Mostly if the video for more than 1 minute. Sporadically it plays a few videos seconds. I already installed different codecs, already reduce bit rates and did not adinantou anything, however, also happens with the CINEMA fv5 app. However, other movie apps play normally. I would like to point out that when I pass the videos to the pc, they are sent but the duration of the video does not appear, ie it shows: "00.000" zeroed, in this case I do not even need to insist on reproducing because what happens. Can you help me? I appreciate it. Thankful.
Piedmont Motion Picture (5 months ago)
Hi! I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble! I'll research this and see what I can find out for you.
Brand By Design Co. (6 months ago)
Great video! Do I have to fix the shutter speed at 1/48 for the 24fps? I have long been searching for information when I ran to your video.
Piedmont Motion Picture (6 months ago)
Hi! I’m glad you asked this question because it’s actually a function I forgot to mention in the video. Yes, a rule of thumb is to always double your shutter speed to match your fps. In the FiLMiC Pro app, you can press and hold on the exposure circle to get access to shutter speed and iso settings.
schmangel 23 (6 months ago)
Why 24 fps? Wouldnt it make the video choppy?
Piedmont Motion Picture (6 months ago)
24 fps is the cinematic standard currently, and usually adds a nice motion blur to images.

RETTO.RIDER (6 months ago)

Piedmont Motion Picture (6 months ago)
You most certainly can edit video just using your phone. Although, I personally find it a little more time consuming. There are a ton of great apps for this. I’ll make a video about it soon.
Adventure Seeker (6 months ago)
Adobe capture on your phone will create LUTs for you. I have taken snaps of movies and gotten perfect grades. Just take a pic of any setting and you will have it saved as a LUT.
Piedmont Motion Picture (6 months ago)
I actually downloaded Adobe Capture awhile back, and I think the Looks functionality has been removed. 🙁
Veejot (6 months ago)
Thanks for the tutorial! Yesterday filmed my first video and tried to hold your instructions in mind. Also tried to use some LUTs and color grading, which was difficult enough as the nature in this season is kind of grey everywhere. Used my Iphone 7 and everything is filmed, while using only hands. mona Great job! Thanks for sharing this with the channel. The wide shot looks good, and I think the overall image quality you got with FiLMiC Pro looks nice as well. If I could recommend something to improve on your next video, it would be to switch up to a close and medium shot every few seconds to give the video more momentum. Stay in touch, and keep up the great work!

I have an iPhone 7 Plus with 128gb of storage. Do you know how fast I'll run out of space if I shoot in 4k? I'm gonna shoot some stuff at Disneyland soon and I'll be there all day. Any recommendations?
Piedmont Motion Picture (7 months ago)
Roughly, a 2 minute clip filmed in 4K with the extreme codec is going to take up about 1GB of data. At least, that seems to be the case on my system. Your battery is going to drain really fast using FiLMiC Pro, so keep that in mind also.

Martino Wong (7 months ago)
Interesting video! I have a question: why add manual letterboxing instead of changing the aspect ratio of the video to 2.35:1 instead of 16:9? I believe that would increase compatibility with ultra wide monitors as well
Father Tamagotchi (4 months ago)
I would recommend not adding manual letterboxing as it will affect how different devices will see the finished project. Someone on a phone should never have a different general experience as someone on a computer or TV.
Piedmont Motion Picture (7 months ago)
For me, it’s just personal preference. I like being able to adjust my framing later. That is certainly an option though.

Great video! I’m wanting to use my iPad Air and FilmicPro but it doesn’t have the Flat or Log profile capabilities. I’m guessing it will only shoot in natural mode. Will I be limited when color grading?
Piedmont Motion Picture (8 months ago)
Yes, you will be a little limited in that you won’t have as much dynamic range when color grading, which means you can’t get as much contrast in the dark and light color values. But, you should be able to make it work with some of the standard color options. thanks for watching, and keep in touch!

Great tutorial -thanks! Here’s the first music video I ever shot. I was experiencing some hiccups with the Canon DSLR due to our only available time and place to shoot was 11AM on a clear and very bright Saturday morning on a mall rooftop and I was totally unprepared having previously only filmed indoors. I was forced to improvise and shot with 2stationary Go-Pro’s and my iPhone mounted on a custom rig. Ever since I have started shifting my attention to shooting mostly on iPhone. https://youtu.be/u2hbe8J2YSA
Daniel Peens (8 months ago)
Piedmont Motion Picture I have 3 different cages that function as stabilizers(one is seen at the end of the dance video). The latest stabilizer was made out of an old Jobi mini Gorrilapod, some 20mm PVC pipe, an old mic clip, and some rubberizing paint. Works nice as a handheld stabilizer or tripod for low or desktop shots. I usually shoot with the native app, but sometimes use Movie Pro(especially for B-roll). Started editing in Lumafusion recently but FCPX and Motion is hard to beat for ease when you have a laptop on hand.

Why should we use 24 frame rate? If we use 50/60 frame rate, we will be able to make video more cinematic, slow and smooth.. i'm a newbie at filmmaking
Rahmat Solihin (9 months ago)
It will be nice to waiting for your next video.. thx :)
Piedmont Motion Picture (9 months ago)
24fps has been the standard for motion pictures for many years. 24 creates a nice motion blur in your images. Here in America, our television shows are shot at 30fps, so anything at that rate reminds Americans (such as myself) of watching television. There have been many films that have shot at higher frame rates, but for the most part, 24 has been the tradition. When we go up to higher frame rates like 60 or 96 we start to get those great slow-motion shots. I’ll make a quick video explaining fps soon!

I don't have 25 fps on my Google Pixel2 very frustrating as I'm in the UK and shoot 25 fps which helps to avoid lights flickering. FIlmic Pro say if it's not native to the phone then their app can't deliver it.
Piedmont Motion Picture (9 months ago)
Are there any apps that work better for your situation, or are you considering switching phones?
Sr. Marshmallow (9 months ago)
Nice video! I wanna know.. is there a reason to add the letterboxing at the 8th step? why dont you just film it with an aspect ratio of 2.39:1 or 2.59?
Praetorian (9 months ago)
Piedmont Motion Picture Why not change the aspect ratio in Premiere Pro then, instead of using the black bar overlay? That way, you can still play around with framing and users with ultra wide monitors don’t experience black borders on the left and right.
Piedmont Motion Picture (9 months ago)
Thanks! I suppose it comes down to personal preference? You can certainly shoot your film in those aspect ratios, but I personally like the freedom the overlaying letterboxes give me to play around with my framing in post.

Can we make music video and edit through this software
Da Same (9 months ago)
Have a look at the Luma Fusion app (it’s great for editing...its 20€...but worth it...you can even get luts) Search videos from this app.)
Piedmont Motion Picture (9 months ago)
You could certainly film your music video footage using Filmic Pro, but you’ll need other software to edit the footage together with your song. If your looking for free software, you can use free versions of HitFilm or DaVinci Resolve.

Hi - do you do anything to your footage before going to Premiere? I sometimes find it freaks out with the variable frame rate.(even when set in Filmic Pro) Do your clips save to the filmic pro or through camera roll? This is a great tutorial regardless though. Thanks for taking the time.
East Carolina Creative (9 months ago)
I was under the impression that saving the clips to your camera roll actually compresses them and in order to the full res clips from filmic, you need to save the clips by accessing filmicpro's video folder on your phone in iTunes.
Piedmont Motion Picture (10 months ago)
Hi, Toby. Aside from the setting I mentioned in the video, I don't do anything else. I do save the videos to my camera roll though, and use the airdrop feature to transfer them between my phone and laptop. Thanks for watching!
