CAMBRIDGE, UK — The Cancer Research UK Cambridge Center is launching a two-year clinical trial of a new breath test device that aims to identify molecules linked to certain cancers. According to a press release, the procedure will be tested on 1,500 participants including cancer patients and healthy participants. The technology is called Breath Biopsy and was developed by Owlstone Medical, a company dedicated to developing non-invasive cancer detection technology. The device used in these tests is called ReCIVA Breath Sampler. It analyzes molecules called Volatile Organic Compounds, or VOCs, present in exhaled breath. Cells regularly produce VOCs as part of their normal metabolic processes. Researchers participating in the trial believe the presence of cancerous cells could cause identifiable changes in VOC patterns. The ReCIVA is designed to detect these alterations. Participants will need to breathe into the device for 10 minutes. Samples of the participants' breath containing VOCs are collected in the device's Breath Biopsy Cartridge and then sent to a laboratory in Cambridge for analysis. The trial will be testing patients suspected to have esophageal, stomach, kidney, bladder, prostate, liver and pancreatic cancer. The results of the trials are expected to be published by 2021. David Crosby, head of early detection research at Cancer Research UK, said in the press release: "Technologies such as this breath test have the potential to revolutionize the way we detect and diagnose cancer in the future." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/PMC4770726/ (2015) Detection of cancer through exhaled breath: a systematic review CONCLUSIONS: Analyses of exhaled breath yielded promising results, although standardization of breath collection, sample storage and data handling remain critical issues. In order to foster breath analysis implementation into practice, larger studies should be implemented in true screening settings, paying particular attention to standardization in breath collection, consideration of covariates, and validation in independent population samples.

This seems legit. It's very simple what they're doing, it's just a reliable & reproducible way to pre-concentrate & collect breath samples. What's exciting about it, is that this could be a much *easier & simpler alternative to a blood test.* Think about how great it would be if Doctors could take a routine blood test everytime you visit, without needing to have a painful arm jab (that also requires extra training/technique & a sterile environment on the Doctor's part). If tests were as easy as this, we'd all do them much more routinely and doctors would have would have a lot more information to work with. They'd be able to catch and treat disease much better. It'll also lead to more medical discoveries, because all of this data can be put into computer models which can find new patterns. We'll end up finding out stuff like (note: fictional example) maybe Alzheimer's disease is almost always predicted by a drop in Folate concentrations (seen in breath tests) 5-7 years before any symptoms show, and subsequent experiments then showed that a sudden Folate mega-dose at this exact time will immediately stop the disease progressing (reminder note: that was a fictional example). Devices like this will lead to all sorts of discoveries like that.

Great to View this, however before the USA will probably have this item, we will have lost so many more people do to the Dr.s here finding Cancer when the signs are not tested or detected in any way. It will be 5yrs before it gets here,, although you say two. Thank you for the Video.

Great thing about it is that you don't need a hospital for it. It doesn't even need a sterile environment (unlike a blood test). You could do this at home, school, work, and the collected samples can be mailed to your Dr or a testing clinic. Because this doesn't require any training, learned technique, nor a sterile environment, it can allow you to do easy medical tests in all sorts of everyday situations. Also because it's not painful, people will have no hesitation being tested (unlike a blood test which can be a bit of an ordeal). All of these sorts of factors combined will lead to a huge influx of data for doctors & medical researchers. This is a good thing, because these-days we have computer models which sort through this sortof data and find new patterns we never even realised where there.
