The Meaning of Life movie clips: http://j.mp/15vNO1x BUY THE MOVIE: http://amzn.to/ru1ruR Don't miss the HOTTEST NEW TRAILERS: http://bit.ly/1u2y6pr CLIP DESCRIPTION: When the Sergeant Major (Michael Palin) asks his troops if they'd rather be doing something other than marching, he loses all his troops. FILM DESCRIPTION: The Meaning of Life is without a doubt the most tasteless of the Monty Python feature films; it also happens to be one of the funniest. Life's questions are "answered" in a series of outrageous vignettes, beginning with a pre-credits sequence at a staid London insurance company which transforms before our eyes into a pirate ship. One of our favorite bits involve the National Health doctors who try to claim a healthy liver from a still-living donor, pointing out that there's nothing in his contract preventing this. And of course, there's the scene with the world's most voracious glutton, who brings the art of vomiting to new heights before his spectacular demise. Be warned: though hilarious, this may be the grossest bit of comedy filmmaking ever conceived (there aren't enough words in the world to describe it in detail!). Loyal Pythonites Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin star in The Meaning of Life and share writing responsibilities, while Jones is in the director's chair this time out. CREDITS: TM & © Universal (1983) Cast: Graham Chapman, Eric Idle, Michael Palin Directors: Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones Producer: John Goldstone Screenwriters: Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin WHO ARE WE? I love this film, albeit not quite as much as Life of Brian and Holy Grail, but I never really appreciated how solid the technical aspects of this are - the cinematography and editing are both done fantastically for comedic affect

The recruits refer to Palin as "Sarge;" at the end Palin calls himself "Sergeant Major," yet he is clearly wearing the rank of Colour Sergeant. Not good enough.

Oh man so funny. I so wish he was my D.I. in the army. I had a guy with one fake and one lazy eye. He would stand between two guys and yell like crazy and no one knew who the hell he was yelling at or who did something wrong. So we would all just drop and do push ups.

Is it only me that noticed that he was playing the part of an RSM (regimental sergeant major) Yet the stripes and crown on his arm says he is only a colour sergeant. Only details, but still they could have got the uniform right. Grew up on Python, and loved it
Jamie Yeates (1 month ago)
Tim Millsom it's the infantry rank above Sargeant but below Sargeant major (in the artillery/logistics I think the equivalent is staff Sargeant)
Tim Millsom (5 months ago)
I'm not familiar with "colour sergeant" I'm assuming it's just a regular sergeant (NCO) when compared to the Australian army

The defining feature of a hierarchy is that it is designed to be easy to grow. This ultimately leads to one of the other primary uses of a hierarchy; the fact that after this growth you can no longer see the top of the hierarchy when you are near to the bottom. This is evident in the sketch where the general starts talking about war: "Right, stop that! It's all very well to laugh at the military, but when one considers the meaning of life, it is a struggle between alternative viewpoints of life itself, and without the ability to defend one's own viewpoint against other, perhaps more aggressive ideologies, then reasonableness and moderation could quite simply disappear. That is why we'll always need an Army, and may God strike me down were it to be otherwise. " The sketch shows obvious techniques used to dumb the soldiers into complete obedience, while at the same time the speech told them the true reason for their war is for defending the ruling class' rulership and ideologies against those of other ruling classes in other nations. This mocks the soldiers by giving them the real reason even when the general knows thatthe soldiers have been made completely unable to grasp the meaning of the real reason for war due to the brainwashing tactics and the fear of God emposed onto the working class soldiers throughout their lifetime and growing up (as shown in previous sketches in the movie.) The final phrase he says makes this taunt even more apparent, as he envokes the God to strike him down if he is lying to the soldiers.
it ended prematurely sketch had a bit of screen time still left!

I mean obviously if he didn't want the world to spend thousands of years divided in warfare between which way to worship him, then he wouldn't have created 3 different religions. And then several dozen more. And then a whole ton of people who don't believe in any of them. And then cancer that kills children, because why not, it'd be a funny joke. Wowee, he really does work in mysterious ways.

General: But of course warfare isn't all fun. Right, stop that! It's all very well to laugh at the military, but when one considers the meaning of life, it is a struggle between alternative viewpoints of life itself. And without the ability to defend one's own viewpoint against other, perhaps more aggressive ideologies, then reasonableness and moderation could quite simply disappear. That is why we'll always need an Army, and may God strike me down were it to be otherwise. [The Hand of God strikes him down with a flash of lightning] Sergeant-Major: Don't stand there gawping! Like you've never seen the hand o' God before!

By the way non-meaning, is also an invented human concept. That doesn't necessarily make it any less real.
happymeltedcity (3 years ago)
You're rationalization is flawed. You just said meaning is made up. And humans might very well have made it up. But now it's here. The invented concept of meaning is not swayed by your preconceptions and it is as real to this universe as you are.
