How deep is this swale reserve need to be? Do they need special kind of concrete? Do we need to water the green on dry season? Will they, in the face of the costs, still turn out economical? Numbers! I want to know the numbers!

Maunster! (3 месяца назад)
Kammak Richerson, mosquitoes lay eggs in water instead of wet greenery or damp earth, just to clarify things for you.

Yeah cooling down a city already cold as fuck the grand majority of the year, not to mention the increased humidity that makes the cold even more unbearable!

Wont this affect agrocultur? If more water is trapped in the cities wont agroculture and forests get dehydrated?
This is just a really complicated way to get rid of sewers so we never have to deal with Pennywise the clown again (not edited)

How does this method of drainage compare to traditional drainage standards? Can it hold up to heavy rainfall or flash floods? Is there a problem created with these rooftop beds of plantation like pests or quicker corrosion of the building? It's a very cool idea but I wish they had more information about the logistical aspects of this type of city design.

I've said for AGES that roads should be porous (a fine grid of material to drive on?), if people make patios in their garden these should have gaps to let rainwater through - nowhere should be concreted over completely except where absolutely necessary - it's common sense! In the old days the rain water went into water butts - but hardly ever now = why? Confused! Near me there's a road that dips down to go under a bridge and when we have very heavy rain it's submerged - not rocket science to fix it... And we should be putting our vegetable waste back onto our land = compost, this must be as easy as possible for people to do = then they'll DO it, if no land (why not?) e.g. no garden then wormeries and street/local compost areas & help (person there = jobs) to do it right?

Sacramento is a better example of a sponge city and it's been that way since the late 90s.
it'sMe TheHerpes (4 месяца назад)
so basically make the air in the city humid. 23 celsius in a humid environment feels like 30 centigrade. this is a very bad idea.

Julian Bruck (4 месяца назад)
yeah right try that in a tropical city like hong kong or miami and you’ll regret it as soon as the mosquitos start calling those “swales” home 😂😂😂

Nicholas Pipitone (4 месяца назад)
It's so silly to have sponging water as a reason to do this, how about the happiness of the people? The effect that this would have on the resident's happiness massively outweighs any other positive reason. Heat doesn't really matter, I mean who cares if it's that hot, you're in Berlin - I'm sure it feels a lot better than living in Florida / Middle East no matter how bad your heat island is, and people live there just fine. Parks are secluded, nothing beats having plants integrated into the environment. I think it's a great idea, but I think it's done for the wrong reason.

in northen europe no need for cooling (unless those 5 days during summer)
Gamikom (4 месяца назад)
No, it's not actually cooler to use this system. This will just cause more floods.
aoi (3 месяца назад)
Wouldn't it help prevent floods? A lot of floods occur because the water has nowhere to go, because there's just concrete anywhere. In sponge cities there's soil and plants everywhere that can absorb that water.

Looks like the planning of Saint Petersburg, a Russian city.
Bertimder (4 месяца назад)
What is told in this video only applies to a ridiculous small portion of the city. Most buildings have to deal with extremely poor sound and thermic isolation and damp walls and cellars (you can not imagine the level of humidity in common Berlin buildings and in many of the new high-tech ones, which are constantly in need of repair). This "solution" is only available for new buildings that only the 1% can afford. The rest is true, Berlin is very green, mostly the neglected parts, because this part of Europe is green, not because of some genius urban planing strategy.

CookieeMonstarr666 (5 месяцев назад)
Can anyone tell me how things work? Do we actually destroy parts of the planets and when disaster happens it is the only time we think about what we have done and try to fix it? Or do we study the advantage and disadvantage and then forget the disadvantage part and build things? Or do we actually don't care at all what will happen and let next generations figure out if there is any problem? what exactly are we doing? I mean I learn differently at school, turns out the adults doing differently in real life.
unscrewedhorses (5 месяцев назад)
If you have a flat roof with green space that absorbs and holds water, does that increase the problem of water leakage through the roof?

I am living in Berlin for years, but have not heard or noticed of the sponge city [program]. However, samrt city planing often stays below the radar of headlines.
