I wish I could have chickens. They're awesome! I'll have to settle for reading a book about it.

What do you do for pest control? I live in the south and ants are a serious issue. I don't want to use harsh chemicals but the soap and baking soda doesn't even scare these suckers lol

What part of the country Are you in to grow such a variety of plants??
The Pervy Prepper (5 месяцев назад)
Another important aspect about gardening that most Preppers don't consider is the simplest of all: Experience. It doesn't matter how many seeds you have packed away in that Survival Seed Vault (or whatever) if you don't have any gardening experience. Not only do you need to know what to do with those seeds... you also need to know what to do with the soil you plant them in... you also need to know what to do with the bugs and the birds and the fungi... you also need to know what to do with the produce you harvest... you also need to know what to do with the SEEDS. There's all kinds of things Preppers don't know that they need to know about gardening... and they won't know any of those things if they haven't starting their gardens til after it's too late. If the shtf... it'll hit them twice as hard and repeatedly. We shall mourn them when they run out of seeds.

You should replace the grass with mini clover. It doesn't have to be watered or mowed and it says green. Plus your chickens can eat them.

Loved watching the chickens chasing you. Have you tried chard? I have a teeny garden as big as a double bed and we're not allowed to grow vegetables or fruit bearing trees in our community because of trouble we have with monkeys. They will in to our houses and and cause a fair amount of havoc. I did try a large pot of herbs but they damaged them while chomping my chives down to soil level.

I was just wondering what state you live in? With the citrus trees and is it legal to have chickens in a suburban neighborhood ?

Funny, appears you are in California where the only wall/fence they don't like is the one on the border.... all backyards have fences or a wall so unlike where I live.

You're so lucky to have such a long growing season. Where I am, there aren't many fruit trees that overwinter very well. There are crab apples and pin cherries but that's about it for fruit trees. I am lucky, though, there are plenty of wild blueberries and in the surrounding bush, blackberries which have seeded themselves and spread from a farm which closed about 60 plus years ago. I've always longed for a garden like my grandmothers. She had pears, apples, strawberries, raspberries and so much more. She also had a much longer growing season. On another note, I watched a video in which you showed us your window sill with all the egg shells. You can also grind them for your garden. And all the pulp from your morning juice.....or some of it because the chickens need some too.....you could compost them for your garden. Any scraps, including coffee and filters, can be composted. I don't put any meat or fats, dairy, etc into mine though but that's only my preference.

I just found your channel and I love your videos. Everything you do reminds me of my grandparents who were children in the depression and if it hadn’t been for a lot of the things that you show on your videos they would have starved. They were rich in the ability to be self reliant and that is what saved their lives and made them prosperous. Thank you for sharing with us.

Hello I am 16 year old boy from California and your video are super cool and really helpful to see how I should live my life when I have to live on my own. I was wondering if you ever thought about writing your own book on prepping, saving money, and what to do in different doomsday situations I would buy all of them lol. That would also be a great way to earn another source of income just a thought but I really hope you would write a book for like young people like me on how to live that have no clue what to do to save money and be prepared for a doomsday situation btw I'm binge watching all your videos lol:)

Your chickens are beautiful. I had chickens for 4 years. They had names & personalities.....great pets! The eggs were a bonus.
Kirk SNOWDen (1 год назад)
I will give you credit and respect for being real, but you would last a month come winter. Not enough growing for two people. I have five times that and have to buy much of what I can ( something you said you want to do ) Also you are loosing money if you are selling your eggs at 3.00. Your yard is small so you need to be more nutrient dense with your garden.. And last but not least don't name your food and yes your chickens are food. I really do like your channel, you just need to be more serious. Looking forward to your next post.
Doodley Squat (1 год назад)
pretty slick set up, doesn't seem like much in that yard now, but when those trees get a few more years growth, you've got some occasional feasts! :) kick down some mini marshmellows to your chickens, after a few tastes, chickens will go ape over them!

May I suggest rhubarb and asparagus. Both require no care and will kindly produce from their root yearly and possibly in your area continuously. Ginger and horseradish also. Plant a peas next to your trees, peas take nitrogen from the air fix it in the soil for other plants to use. You can find books on companion growing.
Prepper Princess (1 год назад)

When I lived in San Diego, the couple across the street had chickens, even though SD City fathers did not allow it. He got by 2 years before zoning raised hxll. So glad I am back in small town Iowa where the city fathers are not such czars, and the small animals are more welcomed. They allow 6 chickens in town per house.

Are your prepper videos being demonetized? I've been making gardening videos since before there was pay but then it was really hard to get into the partner program which took months. Sorry But I wouldn't be able to fill my canning jars by just having things that need no care.
Ogre Dad (1 год назад)
Yeah, modifying the back-to-Eden method myself
Jean Skilling (1 год назад)
Yes I did try the back to Eden method, But I had to dscontinue it. The slugs liked it to much. The day after my husband found a slug on his salad plate I raked up the top layer and composted it. I've found an intensive planted system better here.
Prepper Princess (1 год назад)
Jean Skilling ayes, 3/4 of my garden is grown with that method.
Julia Bradley (1 год назад)
Jean Skilling have you tried a back to Eden garden?
Prepper Princess (1 год назад)
+The grapes make wine (you can see those in the background of the chicken coops), the berries make jam, the chickens give eggs, and I also grow vegetables but didn't want to move the camera around too much. There are eggplants and zucchini planted everywhere. Jean Skilling

Nice garden. My garden gets approx. 120 days to produce. I can extend the season at both ends using hoops and plastic coverings. So far I have lettuce, broad beans and Swiss chard under cover on my porch because I have some work to do on the beds. Our weather hasn't been favorable when I have time so no matter what the weather is this weekend I'll be out there. I wish I had room for the artichokes! They're beautiful. My son loves artichokes and spinach dip. I know this sounds funny, but I'm cultivating dandelions. The roasted root in combination with chicory makes a nice coffee substitute and is very healthy. I make dandelion chai with mine. You can make a batter dip and fry the flowers and everyone knows the greens are good. I planted beets today and this year I'll lightly harvest leaves from them to use in salads. When mature I'll pickle the beets with hard boiled eggs. You can grow 9 beets in one square foot. I'm planting a border of yellow clover around the garden for the bees. We have wild berries in a field below us so I think I'll just start to manage them with pruning and watering. There's an apple tree in same field that we started to take care of a couple years ago and there are wild roses too. We like rose hip tea .We haven't foraged farther away than that.

sorry to bother you again but iam a gardening nut call your local extension office to find out your fall crops you should be able to grow 12 months out of the year like I do in Florida
Candy Johnson (1 год назад)
I start my fall crop from seed around august which is hellishly hot in florida then transplant in sept. My favorite seed company is Baker Rare Seeds all heirloom and great customer service. Iam looking for an avocado tree named little cado if u come across any info let me know. Great advise AnonZ.
Anon Z (1 год назад)
California has 3 growing seasons. At least buy some squash, bean and corn seeds (actual survival crops). Pole beans will grow along your fenceline and produce a LOT of green beans all summer, can easily be dried/stored too. I realize water is a problem but 1 or 2 pole beans would produce a lot. Love the chickens, I have a flock of a dozen myself including bantams which get broody and raise store bought chicks every year. Ain't nothing cuter than tiny little chicks growing up with the flock, they are so much happier and healthier than raising them in a cage under heat lamps. Also feed wheat for the chickens is a great long term prep, about $12 for 50 lbs here. Can line the feed bag with a 5 gal mylar bag and put the feed back in (instead of buying buckets). Mine are picky eaters but they go crazy for wheat and it is pretty nutritious.
Prepper Princess (1 год назад)
+I do grow onion all year, but it does get down to freezing in the winter even though it is California. I could get hoop gardens but don't want to invest that much money just to extend the growing season. Candy Johnson

also remember chicken manure has to compost awhile before use to much nitrogen will burn up the roots. I start in January with my chicken coops to get the poop ready since I live in Florida raw poop would destroy my plants in the heat and sun
