How to edge and mulch around a tree

Оценок: 3078 | Просмотров: 410431
This is how to edge around a tree and mulch around a tree. It's pretty simple, but it gives a clean look without any fancy tools or equipment. You could even do this with a regular shovel, the edger I use just makes it a bit easier to do. Want to watch more lawn care videos with lawn care tips like these? Idiot Grounds crew company I hired (and later fired) said there is no way trench edging could be done without heavy machinery and that it would cost an extra $40 per month to maintain. Think I'll forward this video to them.

Haha yeah there are edger tools pros can use to make it wicked fast so I dunno what they are talking about

This is not correct. You do not want to expose soil at the edge of the circle. Mulch level is too low. You just digged too deep. Add more mulch.

I have never heard of digging the dirt down like that. In my yard that would fill with water after a heavy rain and be a soggy mess.
Grass Daddy (4 месяца назад)
It shouldn't fill up, if it did you'd have underlying water drainage issues
Joe Meow (4 месяца назад)
Don't put dirt on the grass, this may cause weeds to germinate there.

+Grass Daddy check out TRIM BIB. It's a little small for trimming around an entire bush, but it might help you around the yard. You can check them out on YouTube.
Grass Daddy (4 месяца назад)
interesting point. I really should get a tarp.
Barb Grajewski (4 месяца назад)
I would be very careful when doing this kind of edging that you are NOT cutting or damaging tree roots that are close to the surface. Mulch should be 2-3 inches, and placed away from the tree trunk. I personally do not like this kind of artificial circle around trees.
Grass Daddy (4 месяца назад)
If the tree was taller I wouldn't but it's a dwarf tree and the branches are so low mowing around it is a pain. So I do the circle thing otherwise it'd be wicked tall grass =P

can’t tell — how much space between the tree trunk and mulch? i know mulch isn’t supposed to ever touch the tree bark (slow ‘underground’ death)

Just an inch or two

Hi. When u edge, don't the clippings fall into the mulch (and then hard to clean out the clippings)? Also, does the mulch really prevent new grass from growing within the mulched area? Thanks!
Grass Daddy (5 месяцев назад)
It depends on which way you walk. If your trimmer spins clockwise you want to walk forward, counter-clockwise you want to walk backwards. And the mulch will prevent grass/weeds somewhat but it's not 100%.

It's because of the low branches it's a pain to mow around so I made it wider
Leemz100 (7 месяцев назад)
You're lucky you have nice soil. I live in an area where the soil has a lot of sand in it so, when I do edging, it simply doesn't hold. It collapses over time due to rain and weather.

Why do trees have so much mulch high up around the trunk? It pains me to see how many trees are suffocating and diseased from doing so. It weakens the roots because the roots grow upwards to get air. Here’s a link to prove my point from an episode from This Old House https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fI12XNNqldA
Barb Grajewski (4 месяца назад)
People do "monkey see, monkey do", and volcano mulch because their neighbors did it. I cannot believe how many landscapers do NOT mulch correctly, either.
Grass Daddy (7 месяцев назад)
I agree - we tried to plant the tree high up so the mulch would be level with the grass. it usually has an inch or less much between the dirt and tree ;-)

You can also use the removed sod to fill in bare spots in your yard, if you remove them carefully, just make sure to water them really well after replanting.
Grass Daddy (8 месяцев назад)
Yes! I do this too
Denzil Ritchie (8 месяцев назад)
I've done all my trees this way, however I don't like leaving the trench this deep due to the lawnmower wheels accidentally falling into the trench a scalping my grass in the past. Over the years I have added mulch and built it up to where I no longer have this problem. I now us e a riding mower, but in the past years I always mowed with my lawn mower wheels adjusted to the second highest cutting level and always had this scalping problem.
Grass Daddy (8 месяцев назад)
I love the look of the deep edge, so you have to mow with a 6in border and then trim it after. though the swardman you can go right over the edges because it's front/rear rollers keep it from scalping!

How big should I make the circular on a 2’ wife at the base tree? What’s she white rag wrapped at the base for?
Grass Daddy (8 месяцев назад)
I do it based on how much space I need to mow around the tree. If it's branches are high up so you can get close then I'd do it smaller. Or if you have other trees try to match that size. The white wrap is to prevent animals from chewing on the trunk.
xxmayxx (8 месяцев назад)
What you do with the extra soil and grass chunks you took out?
Grass Daddy (8 месяцев назад)
I'll try to re-use the grass chunks on bare spots, but mostly I make a big pile in the corner of the backyard and it grows each year =P I have used some in the past for raised bed filler.
Jason Mastrogiacomo (8 месяцев назад)
General comment for all watching: Make sure your soil & mulch are just above the flare of the tree's roots - If not, the tree will suffocate and will send up roots closer to the surface to get water, air & nutrients. This will lead to large roots rising up above your mulch and growing at the surface into your lawn. This won't happen overnight. Basically, don't create giant hills in your tree plot. (Side note: An ECHO PAS system works great here with the edging and string trimmer attachments, especially if you're redefining existing edges or trying to un-bury any plastic / steel edging that has grass overgrown on it.)
Grass Daddy (8 месяцев назад)
thanks for watching and commenting!! it makes it worth it. I enjoy learning more about lawn care and sharing it with people so hearing how it helps motivates me to make more videos!

Regarding the tree mountains: Absolutely - I was an offender until this year and I started watching your videos, which had suggestions / recommendations for other videos (to the right), which led to other videos. You and other channels are doing an excellent service for all of us looking to get good, consolidated information in one place. I've acquired a ton of knowledge in such a short period of time on how to take care of my lawn & landscape, so thank you for taking the time out of the day to make these!
Grass Daddy (8 месяцев назад)
Yes, I still see 3 ft mountains on some trees around here - eeks! And I've tried the redefiner, a friend has one. Makes for quick work! I don't do enough edging to warrant one myself, although with the recent garden expansions it's getting close lol

I am a pro landscaper 20 years experience. The best way to do this job and be accurate is to start with the gas trimmer take the guard off the machine this will be your pencil as you turn the machine Upside down so you can score the ground to give you a visual of the line and circumference when you’re happy go full throttle with the trimmer and make a permanent line cut everything inside the line short ! Then follow the line with the square spayed and voilà it’s perfect 👌🏻

This is called "victorian edging". If you have bermuda you are doing this constantly due to the runners. Another thing to keep in mind. Don't pile up mulch against the trunk of the tree. This can actually cause decay at the base of the tree and eventually kill it. Us landscrapers call this mulch volcanos which is bad bad bad. For a more permanent solution install steel or aluminum edging when doing this and you won't have to do it again for many years.
C man (10 месяцев назад)
Yeah it might be worth it to wait for the tree to achieve a larger size before putting in edging.
Grass Daddy (10 месяцев назад)
C man I've thought about metal but waiting to see how big the tree gets. Each year I've been increasing the circle slightly because it's hard to mow under the short branches without snagging.
Cristina Queimado (10 месяцев назад)

*_Compliments from an experienced Arborist!_* One tip that is true for both installing and first mulching a tree. Is to excavate "Root Flare" or "Root Crown", from accumulated soil. Which is a trees naturally evolved tool that breaks off any circling roots, with pressure produced by buttress roots as they enlarge. All roots should be growing radially outbound from tree, none parallel to or growing back toward trunk. In fact, re-sweeping flare each spring is one of most beneficial things one can do, according to US Forest Service. Remember never raise soil grade around base of tree. And Mulch turns into soil...So cultivate and even harvest old layers of mulch before applying new. Ask...If you could breath through that much mulch, then so can your tree's or plant's roots.

It's true smothering the tree base with mulch will harm the growth. Also, a pre-emergent like Preem is good to use before putting on the mulch.

This was a nice video. Simple and well explained, thanks. And Good to see I can do this without having to buy the lawn edging which is overkill. A good solid cut into the soil with the half moon edger provides what you need. (Note: Can your son teach my son how to come over and see whats going on without demanding to "help!", which means picking up a shovel that is 2.5 feet taller than him, falling over three times, then getting all indignant when I try to take it back.)

NIce, I'll do this to mine. Now I don't like "the volcano" look either. Bad for the tree to mound stuff up around it too. However, yours has the fall into the pit breaking your ankle look to it. Dude, don't be so stingy with the mulch. Kinda looks like a cliff edge around the tree.

Personally, I will tell you, mulching your trees is great and all, but that mulch can cause you to have termites. A better and easier and longer lasting bed is use river rock or pea gravel around the trees... and no termites!

Tainá Amora (3 месяца назад)
Must be a late comment but what do you do to stop cats from playing in the mulch? Would you cover with black sack (to stop weed growth) and then decorative pebbles or gravel?
R (1 год назад)
What would you consider doing if you have a tree with shallow roots and you can't edge really at all? A brick ring?
Grass Daddy (1 год назад)
That might work, but you'd have to put it on top of the soil so it would be a "step up" from the lawn. You would want to be sure you don't use too much mulch though, with the brick there you'd have the desire to make the mulch level but then that'd probably be too much mulch for the tree trunk

christine sforza (1 год назад)
You can make this a much cleaner job by throwing the turf onto a tarp. Then you can haul it to your raised vegetable beds and place it upside down (green side down) as a base for your raised garden soil bed and add additional soil on top so the grass doesn't sprout back in your raised bed. Also, I would add some fresh garden soil to the tree bed, since tree surface roots must stay healthy for the tree to thrive after stripping a layer off those fine roots.

Lot easier if u used a shovel to rip up the sod after cutting. Put down a film (not landscape cloth/matt/felt, they r a scam) to stop weeds (with proper ground film u won't have any inbedded weeds for a decade or more) and run it to the edge and wrap around the outside of ur edging, spend $20 for edging so u never have to edge for 8-10 yrs, and it it keeps the grass from creeping into the mulch. Also u want at least 5 inches of mulch. Use only screened woodchips and u won't have to replace them for a decade also. The larger the chips the better. Do it once and do it rite.

Change of Art Mary Ann Einarson (5 месяцев назад)
maples hate having their ‘root flare’ covered - they actually like to have some of their roots ‘exposed’... Google: MAPLE TREE ROOT FLARE to see why a tree ring might not work for your tree.
Grass Daddy (1 год назад)
Great question! I would just go out as far as it would look good, and then with the initial cut go slow so you can feel if you hit a root. It's OK if not all of the ring edge is perfect but overall it should look real nice.
scriptless (1 год назад)
Here is a tip we use on the golf course I work at. When you take your edger and make your vertical cuts like you did, go back around from the inside and make horizontal cuts. These horizontal costs should meet with your vertical cuts and will completely make pulling the sod up effortlessly. Also, the "professional" that told you that about a power edger is mistaken. It may be harder for him, but by no way is it worse. Actually it will give you perfect straight lines every time where-as that manual edger you are using may kinda zig and zag. But don't get me wrong I would have used a manual edger like you did. The amount of work it would take to draw a power edger out just to do that itty bitty teeny weeny job would have been far more hassle then it's worth. Also something I noticed, you cannot see your "root flare" at the base of the tree. By covering this up, you are suffocating your primary root structure causing the tree to form a secondary root system which can wrap around the tree, and choke the tree too death. I first heard about this from a TV show called "This Old House" maybe you have heard about it. We don't mulch the tree's properly at the course I work at and because of it the tree's are constantly dying and dropping limbs or getting diseases. This problem can be remedied by making sure you don't "volcano mulch" but when the flare is really deep in the yard it's not really worth putting a huge dip in your yard just for 1 tree. If it dies just re plant a new one. You did mention the volcano mulch problem and you said you use about 1 inch. 1 Inch is fine I wouldn't do any more then 1-2 inches. Really the mulch serves 2 purposes. It coveres the dirt from sun preventing weeds from growing, but also it looks nice. To thin of mulch will not serve the 1st purpose and to much can make it look bad (like those volcano's).
Mike Betts (1 год назад)
scriptless, ditto on the root flare issue. I am planting about 12 new trees right now, being careful to keep the flare at terrain level.

Jennifer McGolrick (1 год назад)
The "volcano" method you are all referring to is actually a great way to mulch heavy feeders like banana plants, other tropical trees and some fruit trees. It may not be as aesthetically pleasing, but that is not really the purpose of mulching... The purpose of mulching is to insulate and enrich the soil. As the mulch breaks down, it feeds the soil. Just keep it a few inches away from the trunk to discourage rot and pests, etc. As a matter of fact, GRASS will have the same suffocating effect if it's left to grow around the trunk. Anything that binds the trunk or the graft (in many situations these days) can kill your tree. Point being, if you see 2 feet of compost, decaying carbon matter, etc lying around the base of a tree - there's probably a master gardener behind it. Don't knock it til you've tried it.
