On TOH they checked the soil and added some product like sod starter. They also raked each time they stepped in a spot about to get sod. Noticed some guys compacting the soil with their boots. Probably won't be a big deal but this old house show was stickler.

You never said anything about depth of cut near walkways
Alex Tomev (1 month ago)
Best way to remove turf is with a sod cutting machine. It saves a ton of weight on disposal since it barely takes any soil. You can adjust it very high too so it just barely scrapes the green off and leaves most of the soil/roots. Or if it’s good strong weed free turn can set the depth to pull nice sod rolls for use on the same or next job.
Ron Miechkota (1 month ago)
Did you mention to roll the sod with a heavy roller to compact it? Or it not necessary.

We are in North Texas right on the Red River, very sandy soil here. We just dropped 2 dump truck loads of sandy lome and spread to a compact fashion. Can we just lay out our squares onto well damped dirt?

PEOPLE PLEASE DON"T LISTEN TO ANY OF THIS EXCEPT THE TITLE!!! Lol, I don't know where you live but I don't think anyone should be listening to your advice unless they live on the same street, maybe. I still doubt that though. This is NOT how you lay grade and sod..... No compaction?? Really? That is acceptable? I think it is probably not even legal in most cities. YOU MUST COMPACT THE SOIL! How can you say otherwise?????. Haven't you ever noticed how hard the ground is when you start digging? Grass doesn't die from the dirt being to tight, lol. Your job is to compact it and level it. That will make STAPLES unnecessary ,lol, staples, unbelievable... Do you staple the dirt too? With really tiny little staples for each granule? lol.. I was just wondering what happens to the dirt on the hill when it rains? How do you keep the sod in place when you are stapling to loose dirt that is washing away. I guess you staple through to the rough grade? But then how do you get the dirt that washes away back under the sod?? LMAO ..... You don't use staples, you compact and level the dirt every 1"-1 1/2" and the grass won't go anywhere..... (ok, any potential rain would have to come in the first 4 or 5 days otherwise it should be sufficiently attached by then, and the dirt COMPACT enough. Before that if your in a 'torrential' down pour you are likely going to lose most of your dirt, so stakes into the sub-grade would only keep the grass in place which you would then have to remove to put more dirt in,) ..... which reminds me, the first watering, and every subsequent one, is going to compact it, but it would happen randomly and leave you with a BMX track. If you DON"T compact the soil is how you get waves and depressions and hills and valleys after the rain because the rain just pushes it randomly and creates puddles and streams. Lmao..... PEOPLE PLEASE DON"T LISTEN TO ANY OF THIS EXCEPT THE TITLE.

Is there anything you SHOULDN'T lay sod over? I have a small (9' by 13') gravel patch on my back lawn that I would like to turn into grass. Would I need to remove all the gravel? It's not very deep, I can see dirt underneath. Or can I put the sod on top of it? Thanks for the helpful video!

I had my home built in 2017, and the landscaping company that laid my sod left a lot of lines between the sod. How can I repair this and make the lines disappear?
JOSHUA HARMON (1 month ago)
Would deff use top soil before I would sand...
The BBQ Jerk (2 months ago)
Use masonry sand. Don't use "play sand" or fine grain sand. You want a "gritty sand" that sticks together. If you use a fine sand it will shift when you walk on it, like a beach. Mason sand. Also dont use soil or organic material. It will just beak down and the lines will appear again. Most places that sell bulk sand and much will have masonry sand or something acceptable. Go look at the sand and feel it, make sure its not full of pebbles either. If you just need a little you can buy 60 pound bags of "all purpose sand" in the concrete section of Lowes, Home Depot....

Lawn mowing (3 months ago)
What do you do when you want to raise the yard a bit and relever it? You have to add a bit more than 1.5 inches
What is the typical protocol for maintenance after sod installation if you do not have a normal lawn maintenance program with the customer? ie: is it the customers responsibility to water and maintain to promote growth of the newly installed sod? Do you stop back for follow ups at particular intervals after installation?

Quick question, I have an infestation in my front yard of crab grass. It's my grandfathers old home and he passed a few years ago, I wasn't in the best financial situation to buy the home from my parents so they rented it to create income until I could get my money situation back to normal. With that said my grandpa planted Centipede grass and ALWAYS kept it up, it was a passion of his. He was known for having the most beautiful lawn in our community, after renting the home for 3 to 4 years , the renters didn't keep up the lawn outside of mowing, hence the infestation of crabgrass. I've been in the home now for 2 seasons and I've literally rid the turf of every weed known to man outside of the crabgrass. I've dug em up in the back yard (because it's a smaller backyard) and filled the holes with black soil an then plugged using the existing runners of grass, with great results. The front is a huge stretch of turf the size of a football field . I've put out pre emergent yo keep the crab grass from germinating, I've spot treated , used post emergents, bagged it while mowing etc.. I cant rid the lawn especially in certain runs of the yard. Should i give up an use my skid steer as you did here, prep the soil and use sod or do you have an opinion on getting rid of the crabgrass without having to sod. I'm in the deep south obviously with centipede grass by the way. Any help would be appreciated from anyone here in the comment section as well. Thanks

The BBQ Jerk (1 month ago)
Dallisgrass gets Roundup. Use the "deodorant stick" gel version of it and just wipe it on the leaves. it will kill just the Dallisgrass and not a 3 foot circle around it.
clemsontigz1 (1 month ago)
After further inspection I have the dreaded dallisgrass . Do I do the same for dallis as i would crab as far as post and pre emergents?
JOSHUA HARMON (1 month ago)
True...big Difference in crabgrass and dallis grass...Crabgrass you can treat easily...Dallis grass is either round up or pull up. Dallis grass is a clump.
The BBQ Jerk (2 months ago)
No. Pre emergent works. You're not applying at the correct time or using a poor quality one. Pre emergent needs to be down before the soil temps reach 70 degrees. If you are in the deep south and wait till April, you're too late. Crabgrass is easy to prevent and get rid of. Also what you think is crabgrass might actually be Dallisgrass. In that case you have to nuke it from outerspace.

Hi - cool vid! My wife and I are moving into our new house in about 3 weeks. The whole back yard is level dirt (clean).. although little compacted. Im planning on loosening it a little and mixing some potting soil in the top before either laying sods or going plug - we are in San Pedro CA and sunshine all day long. This vid was real helpful! In south africa I had to do this in front of our family beach house and pretty much planted a 50/50 mix of potting soil and compost and then lay stringers down. It took a yr but we have had the most perfect lawn for 8 years since! Will this approach work here for st augustine? Thanks again!
James Gibson (7 months ago)
Hi Stan. First I just want to say I love your videos. Most are very educational and others have some great comedy. I have to disagree with your statement of 1-2 inches of topsoil. I think it really depends on the subsoil. I have done some sod projects where the subsoil has outstanding drainage and others that are clay base. Clay base subsoils would be perfect for 1-2 inches of topsoil but others that have great drainage require at least 3-4 inches of soil to retain moisture. Other than that you hit the nail on the head as usual. Take care my friend

Can I lay sod in late December in south Texas? If so, what would be the best sod to use? Zoysia seems quite popular here.
The BBQ Jerk (2 months ago)
Yes. The sod will be dormant though. If you have full 6-8 hours of sun, bermuda would be better.

We purchased a house that had a very weedy front yard and discovered that the entire yard has concrete under it. I found out that one particular owner in the past did that because he was tired of dealing with crabgrass. Anyway we would like like to return it to a high draught area grass. We have about 4-5 inches to work with. Can we lay soil and sod without removing concrete? I was also hoping to put a drip system under it. It's pretty flat but does have some run off potential. BTW, why is this video labeled How NOT to lay Sod?
The BBQ Jerk (2 months ago)

The people we bought our house from installed sod over existing turf...they half-assed it only in order to sell the house. Looked great at first but a year later it was hard as rock and d-e-a-d dead. We didn't know what happened until our neighbor told us how they installed it.😑 Thought it was something we did terribly wrong, to have it be that fried. Wish they would have just saved their money because it's actually created MORE work for us. Starting from scratch now. Thanks for the video
The BBQ Jerk (2 months ago)
It did not die a year later because the previous owner. It died a year later because of you and your neglect.
Debra Fidler (1 year ago)
A neighbor on freecycle is giving some sod. He has a pallet. I went today to get 5 rolls. They keep falling apart. We have had a lot of rain but he states it was covered with a tarp. I wish I could sent you a picture. The sod looks like it might be dying. How do I know. A sod newbie. Debra
Even if its dying it can be used if it still has a little life.
Mary Snider (1 year ago)
I recently bought a brand new home and there was a delay in getting sod due to consistent heavy rain "flooded the sod fields" So we moved in prior to the sod being completed and therefor I was present when it was being installed. It was delivered in pallets of small sheets rather than rolls. And then installed the next day. They didn't lay the sheets out like your video shows. They kind of chopped up the sheets and patched it together in no particular pattern. There are even gaps in between the patches. I am suspecting they did this to cover more space with less sod for cost purposes, but I'm wondering if this was wrong and what kind of trouble it's going to cause in the future. Many of the pieces are only maybe a foot wide, some less and some more.

I am getting sod to put on my existing lawn bc a grass company put down pregerminant and postgerimanent and now all I have it dirt. will that effect the sod?
Just In (1 year ago)
grass doesn't grow from seeds in hard pack soil. overwatering didn't help. just adds mold n rot i guess. for sod, i'd try loosening the existing soil instead of throwing extra dirt down. I've seen sod laid down on a traffic island on a golf course. they drenched it with water untill the sod became as soft as the soil beneeth. i've also seen lightly watered sod dry up and ruin the entire yard. never seen overwatered grass die.

Hi Stanley, I have a small city lot. It had been covered with cloth and crushed gravel. this was about eight years ago. There has since been some grass sprouting. Also, there are four, four by eight elevated square foot gardens placed in the yard. I have a dog that doesn't know where to do her business. my local sod dealer sells sod in two foot by four foot squares. This is the perfect size based on how the elevated garden has been laid out. The yard gets about 8 hours of sun based on the detached garage and the house. I have estimated about 210 square foot of potential yard.. Is this possible, or should I go to Astro-turf :-)? Thanx for any suggestions! Keith from Dayton, Oh

i just layed down 500 sf pf sod. How many times should I water per day. And when should I apply fertilizer?
Dr. Mike Hughes (1 year ago)
I had a low area in the backyard filled in with 28 yards of sandy type soil. Couldn't afford instant gratification sod lay. I pulled plugs with a pro plugger prior to putting the soil in. I put these in at about 8 inches apart. When I ran out I bought sod squares using the in a checkerboard style lay down. I started with watering twice a day with 15 minutes a time. The plugs are doing good. They are 4" long and 2.5" diameter. The sod after about 4 hours seems to be drying out and blades are curling in some areas. Do in need to water more often say 6 times a day at 15 minutes a time? What do you suggest?

Most of my bermuda seems to have died off due to lack of sun. You mention removing the existing grass. Can I just scalp it using my weedeater and lawnmower set so low that it takes the "grass down to the dirt?
The BBQ Jerk (2 months ago)
You could scalp with a weedeater and mower down to dirt if you had lots of sun and bermuda. I did that with my backyard and it worked fine. Not sure I would do that with other grasses that might not be too hardy. Bermuda is tough to kill as long as it has water and sun.
clemsontigz1 (4 months ago)
It being a year later you've probably tackled this situation , the problem with scalping is you dont remove the bulk of the root system of existing weeds, different types of grass etc.. It's best to rent a skid steer if possible, or if it's a smaller section just wet it for 3 to 4 days in a row and use a flat bladed shovel and dig it all up. You'll get out of your sod what you put into it, if you prep you soil and I've ALWAYS used either superthrive (sold at your local hardware or nursery) or Microbrew from Fox Farm nutrients . I put it in a pump sprayer and spray my black top soil with the nutrient , it's a nutrient loaded with vitamins not fertilizers, I've had amazing results. Some believe strongly in these products and others say "ehhh its ok" but I love it.
Crasherated (1 year ago)
Hey John I am going to school for Advanced turf science and I would say NO, do not just scalp the yard because that will leave all the roots of the grass and any other Organic material that you have missed. That Organic material then decomposes and turns into what is called Black layer, it will kill your yard eventually. Also you want the ground to have plenty of Oxygen and nutrients. I am assuming that if you are taking out grass thats current then there is a problem most likely with the soil, so it would be a good idea to at the very least get the grass dug up and maybe rotatil to get the oxygen back in the soil. Hope this helps.
Life of a Mom (1 year ago)
john smith Someone in my neighborhood did that. The builders used centipede grass and he wanted Bermuda, so he scalped his yard and laid the Bermuda over it.
That's an idea! I'd research this more before you go through with it.

Thanks for this helpful video! we're about to install sod in our backyard. I hope we didn't do the wrong thing. Our 50s grass was gross, patchy, and barely there. It's also Colorado clay, very compacted. We had 8 cubic meters of good compost top soil brought in, half for our new raised garden beds, the rest to improve our soil before sod. We raked it our and rototilled it in. It's loamy and dark now! Was this bad? Our lawn before was rock hard and lumpy. Dreaming of soft thick grass this summer. Anyway, great video!

If you want good sod. Call B &B sod in elk river. The best sod you can get. I used this sod only in ND and MN. I order any where from 10,000 Square feet to 120,000 Square feet of sod and it's the best price to. It's fertilize before it gets cut and shipped out too. no other place does that

I do landscaping. I did sod out in ND with no black dirt and I used a t650 with a leveling bar to flow and level out yards. You don't have to hand rack the yard. My sod would be the greenest yard you would ever see. Do you want the yard soaked with water. Water it 3 times a day from 30-40 minutes at a time.

Do you guys not use a tuck in system when rolling each I'm a landscaper and would never just roll it out to do it correctly you need to tuck them together?

No. Its sod, not a dress shirt.

You might want to warn your subscribers about cheap sods. Good sods are cut and delivered within 24 hours whilst cheap sods may have been stored for a few days, or stolen. A common scam employed by unscrupulous contractors is to lay your sods, only to return that night and take the lot up and sell them on to the next customer, or indeed, back to you.
Yes- good point!

I've always rolled sod after installation so there's good contact between the roots and soil surface. Bad idea?
The BBQ Jerk (2 months ago)
If you keep the sod moist it should have good contact anyways. No need to roll.
