Оценок: 1466 | Просмотров: 326133
Here in this video I am going to test, diagnose and repair ATX power supply for one desktop PC. The PC went dead after power supply failure. Here we will learn how to test and limit the power supply fault to a particular circuit. replacement power supply can be found anywhere in the market. switching power supply is the main part of today's modern electronic equipment. power supply manufacturers are everywhere in China. 12 volt computer power supply is very common ATX type supply used in computers, laptops, photocopiers, printers, atox and everywhere. unregulated power supply is another common type of power supply used in most equipment. 24vdc power supply is sometimes used to charge a lead acid battery. pc 12v power supply can be modified as lab power supply. 12v dc atx power supply is common type supply for desktop PC. pulse power supply is another name give to a switching power supply. ac dc power supply is very common for lab use. linear regulated power supply are used as variable voltage output supplies. programmable power supply is another kind of variable voltage power supply. cosel power supply is sometimes used in electronics. best power supplier are most manufacturers. industrial power supply is another kind of power supply used. 12v dc computer power supply can be used as apx power supply. where can i buy a power supply is common question asked. medical power supply is the most costly type of power supply used in medical equipment. switching power supply is another name of ATX power supply. dc power supply is also a kind of switching regulator. ups power supply is termed as uninterruptible power supply. 12v power supply has many many uses.

You should mention and know that most of the ATX power supplies need some decent load to really start up and keep their specs. If you start it with no load it will shut down immediatly and even can be damaged in some cases. The earlier versions 1.0 just need a little load in the 5V rail but the newer ones need more minimum load on nearly all rails separatly. They probably will come up for short time but run instable and can be damaged.

My power supply works fine until I game for about 15 minutes than my computer restarts itself.. any idea what can be causing this problem?
LearningZone (1 месяц назад)
Normally electrolytic capacitors are creating problems in power supplies. You can replace all electrolytic capacitors in power supply if they are cheaper in your area compared to the power supply.
Lunar Solis (1 месяц назад)
LearningZone it is a bad power supply because when I use a different power supply it works fine. Do you know what can be the problem that is causing this issue with the power supply ?
LearningZone (1 месяц назад)
It could be a dirty processor heat sink. Try clean the processor. Or in other case it could be bad power supply.

I have the same problem like the one in the vid. Replaced the burn choke filter and runs like a champ. BUT, it runs very hot, easily 70 degrees (cant touch it). It runs hot even under no load. Voltages are PERFECT. Wondering if the choke will burn again and way ... Could you help me ?. Thanks. Nice vid.

Great. You have excellent knowledge and research! Hope replacement of output strip caps may help cool down the toroide. Let me know your findings and success. Best regards.

+LearningZone Many thanks SIR. Im reparing this ATX to make some money and sometimes I stuck so bad on some of them, can figure out what is going. One question sir, what is the expected freq. The PSU now is at 29Khz and dutyv cycle is 78% (Im using a multimeter with Hz and duty cycle measurement). I changed the set resistor to get 50Khz, now duty is 25% (seem more reasonable). But the toroid is still too hot. I will check caps today. Any other suggestion will be very welcomed. Many thanks and bless for you. EDIT: Added info. Chip is ATX2005, is very similar to SD o SG6105 (not sure if this is the correc number for it) TL494 + 339 combo chips. Its PWM + supervisor. Both inputs work. Input transistor not shorted. Diodes not shorted (at least measuring in the PCB). The choke is for 12V and 5V and -12V. The 3.3V is in a separete choke. It runs hot too, but not as hot as the one I told you. Interesting fact, not sure if you have used this ATX testers (the ones with a blue screen showing voltages and a couple of alamrs), the TESTER ALWAYS have a warning on Power ON delay being 0ms. Normally is 300ms, 350ms .... ummmm It turned off and back on (alone) a couple of times and in one oportunity it took like 3 seconds to start. Thanks again for you patience and time.

Seems you have bad capacitors after filter. Replace those electrolytic capacitors with new. Stay tuned and blessed.

Very nice video. I have a problem with a PSU (thermaltake tr2 600w) after low voltage on input AC 220 (160 or less) my power supply Die, but my motherboard show green light when connected. PSU won't turn on even manually with green+black wire together. Do you know what can it be? What can I test? No sign of burnt or smell. Thxs in advance!

Wow! that thing is absolutely gutless! How is it not floating away? In all seriousness though, I wouldn't even bother repairing such a cheap peace of junk and buy a quality PSU from someone like EVGA, Corsair, Seasonic, ect. This PSU looks more like a 200W unit too (and a unreliable one at that), not a 500W

this psu has 15A on the 12v rail, meaning it can barely reach 250w continuously properly. Even at peak wattage for a few seconds, i can't imagine it will reach 500w. Just to give a comparison, my 400w gold rated psu has 32A on the 12v rail. So, this is a very good video, showing you have superb skills, but i would advice to get another psu because it is of very bad quality and will damage the whole system.

Yes you are very much right. This was only for demonstration. Thanks for liking.

When my $10 ten year old PSU died recently, it felt like someone close to me had died. If I knew how to fix it I would have. I would rather keep something I know than risk getting something that might be cr*p in heat, noise or even risk of fire. There might even be risk of a DOA and all the hassle it entails.

I have this true rated PSU that turns on but the thing is doesn't boot that computer, it just turns on the motherboard, CPU fan spinning, GPU fan spinning, keyboard and mouse light not turning on, no beep. I tried other PSU on the same PC and it turns on so PSU is the issue. all connection on every single wire are within the standard, 12v, 5v, 3.3v etc no issue in each connection, PSU fan spins normal. I usually get shocked when holding the CPU when installed in the computer. What may cause this issue and what component to check first?
Audun Jemtland (1 год назад)
Someone has warned me to NOT open the CPU to blow away the dust. Let it rest for a couple of hours. As there can be electricity in there? Is it dangerous? How would you go about it? I've seen people hit the power button when it's turned off to discharge.

Hey guys. My pc had shut down a few days ago and I narrowed down the problem today. Everytime I plug in the 4-pin power socket on the motherboard for the cpu, the pc does not boot at all (no fans running etc). When I unplug the cpu 4-pin on the motherboard, everything is fine. The fans run at their at their normal speed (led and gpu). Obviously, there is no post since the cpu is unplugged. Did my cpu 4-pin power socket short circuit?

dear sir, my PSU stopped running. upon inspection, I noticed a blown fuse. I replaced it with a new one, but it blew off the moment I turned it on. what could possibly be the fault???
Ronaldo Jr. (1 год назад)
I have the same issue sir. Please help. Thanks.
LearningZone (1 год назад)
Seems your PSU is blowing up the primary fuse. There would be sure some short circuit on the primary side. Check for shorted rectifier, transistor or similar. The output rectifier could also be shorted and could cause same blown fuse. You may subscribe on my channel to get more videos in future. Regards,

Hey friend, I am trying to use a psu like an ordinary lab power supply. It powers on with green wire connected to ground and it could stay on all day long but when I connect some low amper load like a 12v light bulb it make the psu to shutdown. Do you know on what could be happening? Thanks a lot for you videos
LearningZone (1 год назад)
OK dear friend if you connect any sort of load and the power supply is shutting down, means there is some problem with that particular power supply. Or maybe you are trying to connect a very high wattage lamp like a car head light or something similar! if this is the case try connect a low power lamp. If still the problem is then replace this power supply or repair it. Check for bad caps and diodes in the output stage.

LearningZone does transistors had nothing to do with it? i had replaced capacitors with new one but the voltage is still the same.

You should check your capacitors using ESR meter and then replace all bad value capacitors with new good ESR value capacitors. This may fix your problem.

All this generics work on the secondary side and send the pulses to the transistor back using an isolation transformer, sometimes optocouplers. The primary side ones you found more in good gear or good PSUs. The generic cheapo ones, are jurasic, not even PF correction. Still do the job.
Abhinav Mathur (1 год назад)
Ok sir
LearningZone (1 год назад)
Dear friend optocoupler is important in some way but there will be another IC in some model it is TL494 and TL495. In your model it may differ. So check for that IC. If the transistors became shorted, you will replace transistors along with that IC. Because the transistors shorting the IC as well. Anyhow first you should check for short somewhere else like 5V standby supply circuit. If the 5V standby circuit is not coming to on, the other circuits would also no. Testing transformer should not be very necessary as they are normally not going defective. Their defective ratio is as low as 2 in 1000!

Abhinav Mathur (1 год назад)
ok thanks sir
LearningZone (1 год назад)
Dear friend thanks for subscription. You should check both transistors for short. If they are shorted, you should replace them both along with primary switching mode IC. Also check for any short like cap, diode or regulator in the secondary circuit. Sometimes there is fault in the secondary which protects the power supply from switching it on. Also check for any shorted inductor as it was in the video you already watched. Also comment again if you get any question.

PSU's that old should be thrown in the trash. they aren't designed to last forever. maybe 5 years at the most. modern motherboards pull most of the amps from the 12 volt rail and the old PSU's don't support the current draw
Aristarco Palacios (1 год назад)
Neither do you. If you throw damaged PSUs away because you can't or just won't repair it and because of your lack of knowledge to do it just throw it away then why watch this video? and most importantly, why bother on commenting? You're adding nothing to the theme.

Yeah, I mean, not everyone can just board swap & forget it on everything they do then have balls to say they have decades of experience fixing fixing things. That's the kind of shit I did for as an authorized repair technician for companies like Lenovo, Dell, Lexmark, & Vizio. That's beginner level stuff. Sadly, I'm only able to provide service slightly above that for people, because I don't have an actual workstation so I can't really trace & fix problems beyond "well, this fuse or capacitor is blown. let's see if I have a replacement in my bin of dead electronics" or "well, this power supply doesn't have the cables I need & I don't have any adapters, so let me solder or splice on ones that will do what I need from a dead one that does." I barely have space from old 2-setting radioshack soldering iron someone gave me one day(was using a $5 harbor freight piece of crap before that) & my multimeter is kind of a piece of shit with shitty leads(I had to replace the ends with freaking paperclips they were that shit).

Good lord, the entire input filter stage and input protection is missing from the board in that PSU, they didn't even bother populating it (just a single glass fuse is used). There's no output protection and no PFC which means nasty output transients are possible. And those dinky FETs, output diodes, and heat sinks... 500 watts my ass. I would be amazed if it were stable at 250. I'm surprised only the output caps and inductor died. That thing is a time bomb

Yeah it's probably from 1996.

Your shit is the shit!!!Good job. i tried to replicate your job to a slimline power supply with no success because The burnt choke is located right inside the heat sink of the voltage regulators
Dacke (1 год назад)
You're a good tech, and it's your PC. I just wouldn't trust it in mine.
LearningZone (2 года назад)
Maybe you are right. But it worked and is still working in a PC. Everything can be a time bomb!!!

Hi I have a Dell smps that has partial functionality but I dont think it is providing full power. My question is should I be able to short out the 12volt power rail to my multimeter and get the amp rating on the spec sheet. What is happening is when I attempt to do this the supply shuts down. I can do this with 5v and 3.3v but the amp rating is much less than spec and the atx psu keeps working.

wow I cant believe that worked most of the time when you have more then 3 caps blown it has damaged other things and weekened other caps so I just toss them out inless its a expensive ps but the one in the video is just a cheap crap ps in fact the ratting is way off I would say that is a 120 watt max.

Yes you are right but intention was to repair it and show it had been returned to life again. In this way we learned a great deal. Supply repair was just a bonus. Regards,

where can I get a 20 pin smps
LearningZone (2 года назад)
The are available in the market. Now a days 24 pin PSU are common. You can detach four pins connector from one to make it 20 pins SMPS. Regards,

I got only 5V standby, what's wrong with it ? Yesterday, I connected to a bad motherboard ....can it be 12V rail broken ? Any ideas ? thank I can hear high pitch from power supply...
Riko Ho (2 года назад)
I got problem on push pull transistor for switching, fixed already,  thanks
Harsh Shukla (2 года назад)
so how do you check for shorting? do you check at each individual capacitor level?
LearningZone (2 года назад)
Probably there would be a short on 12V or 5V rails. Check it and repair whatever is shorted. Regards,
Taunter Atwill (2 года назад)
It says 500 watts, i bet if you use a load of 500 watt it'll burn down to charcoal. I've been testing a shitload of those cheap oldfashioned atx boxes and have a lot of charcoal now.

plz help i have bought a compaq deskpro en and the mobo flashes MEANING that there is a problem with the PSU and i readen that i need to replace it but the other psu i got DOSENT MATCH THE FACTORY PSU WIRING
HappySlappyFace (1 год назад)
+Aristarco Palacios lemme see late 1 year? OH WELL i already fixed that problem by doing a trick insalling only 32mb of ram and letting it memtest so it dosent crash then add the bigger ram and it dosent need to redo the test oh well IM INSTALLING WINDOWS 98 ON IT NEW XD btw how can i burn a frikkin floppy on a laptop
Aristarco Palacios (1 год назад)
What do you mean it doesn't match the factory PSU wiring? Are wires with other voltages in places where they shouldn't be? If so, you could just rewire the ATX connector to match the old PSU. No need to cut wires, you can remove the female pins in the connector with a Molex tool or a steady hand and a needle or a tiny flat screwdriver, like 1 or 2 mm wide screwdriver.
HappySlappyFace (2 года назад)
nvm its a bios prob when i booted it up first time i cant pass the test so i added the 32 megs ram and saved then the 128 and the 256 so i can boot up it is qinda sucks
LearningZone (2 года назад)
In such a case you must have to repair the existing bad power supply.

A switching power supply does require a load to work properly, but you seem have knowledge of this power supply to repair it, Very well!!

Hi, if the capacitors measure 20-30% more of the printed value, they are still ok or it's better to replace them? no bulge etc. on them.
IamRoby (2 года назад)
unfortunately i don't have a ESR meter, thanks for the reply.
LearningZone (2 года назад)
Not a must but if they went bad in ESR value, for sure you will replace them. Regards,

I don't see it in the list of posted videos or do I have to do some extra search(the new vid)

+Jesus saves This is the third last video uploaded some two weeks before. The title is Router 9V supply repair. Maybe you will get some understanding from that repair as it is a repair on the primary side of the power supply and also latter in the end of the video I show how to use series lamp testing after your repair. The +5vsb of my PS are out of the 5% tolerance. All the rest of the PS is OK. Would you say, it could be repaired? If yes, then how? Thanks
Ode Newman (2 года назад)
Many thank for answering. This tip was a good one. I'll obay your advice. Thanks again. Ode Newman
LearningZone (2 года назад)
+Ode Newman No not all dear friend and the best idea could be if you have an ESR meter, test all caps for ESR value and replace the bad ones only. If you will attempt to replace all it will be expensive and much more labor intense. Hope you will bring it back to service. Share your success here with us. Regards,
Ode Newman (2 года назад)
Many thanks for your answer. You proposed to replace the capacitors. Should I replace all capacitors, or only a specific one? BTW. in my PSU, the +5vsb has only 4.51V and therefore the motherboard refuses to boot. Kind Regards
LearningZone (2 года назад)
+Ode Newman 5% is something should not be a problem. Anyhow you can correct this mistake by recaping the unit with new caps. Regards,
Jesus saves (2 года назад)
Thanks man. cool video. My Pc's power supply burned recently. I found the input voltage was set to 120 and plugged to a 240 source. I opened the PSU and found one of the two big capacitors on the primary side(640uf 200V) with the adjacent resistor and blue two legged flat component( reads RV) is burned. Can this be fixed or ........ please comment Thanks again
LearningZone (2 года назад)
+Jesus saves Yes dear friend it could be fixed if you troubleshoot it with patience. Better if you watch my other recently uploaded one video on power supply repair. It will give you some more idea of testing and troubleshooting. Regards,

very useful video my dear friend!! keep it up and upload such type of video. really thanks worth watching it.

+pranay sao Thank you very much dear friend for liking video. You know the weight of skill that is why you liked the video. Otherwise there are 30 dislikes out of 355 likes! I don't know what people want to watch and what is their expectations? What I did in this video was an extreme repair where I wound the torrid myself and had shown how to diagnose a shorted component which is mostly a pain in the neck. Regards,
The Sqoou (2 года назад)
The three yellow parts you called "power supply" is what went wrong on mine. One of them threw sparks. Do you know what those are called or how to repair them ¿
LearningZone (2 года назад)
+The Sqoou Sure that is the great way of learning to fix old things instead of throwing them away without looking into them. This is my way as well if I am replacing something with a new one, even I am looking inside the older one and that older one is greater than the newer one as it is increasing my knowledge.  You can dismantle your broken transformers and rewind them in custom way if you are careful and skilled enough. The rule for rewinding will be what and how you are removing, same and same way you would have to fix back in. Better make a note while dismantling. So wish you good luck with your repair and share your success results here with us.
The Sqoou (2 года назад)
+LearningZone Yes. Thanks you. I looked in a few old power supplies to see if any match. I will likely buy a new one soon. I still want to fix the broken one to see if I can. Thanks for the information. and help.
LearningZone (2 года назад)
+The Sqoou The three yellow parts are transformers. The bigger one is the main transformer and the smaller are standby power and other associated power supplies transformers. All are necessary for perfect operation of the power supply. They go bad very rare. They are not common replacement part as the failure rate is very rare maybe 1 out of 1000! The replacement process is easy and is simple de-soldering and soldering. But the main problem is their availability. The only one way to find them is to look for a badly failed power supply having same transformers and then salvage them from that board. Hope you would understand what I expressed.

Wow, can't believe this guy is giving advice on repairing electrical components. Anyone else spot the two bare wires going into the wall socket behind him? (set video to 1080 on full screen and have a good look) This made my day, I really needed a laugh...thanks.
jakese7en1 (2 года назад)
+LearningZone I will look forward to that, as long as there is no ladies and children around it should be OK, because we all know men can take 240 volts no problems!!.
LearningZone (2 года назад)
+jakese7en1 You are right dear friend but as I already explained, here I was the only working on such unit. So I understood the risk. If there were children or ladies around, sure I had to protect it very well. Another thing is PC repairing is not only my job. this is a hobby. And when I am shooting a video, there is much more to do than to give attention to wire insulation etc. There is my other video coming on where I am doing even more dangerous testing. So you will become even angry on that.
jakese7en1 (2 года назад)
+LearningZone Actually I am a PC technician, I've fixed thousands of PC problems. Saying that I've never fixed a PSU, so my hat is off to you for that. BUT!!! two bare wires into a wall socket is not a small thing, it's outright dangerous.
LearningZone (2 года назад)
+jakese7en1 You can only laugh and will only laugh. Any thing else is beyond your abilities! Instead of pointing a very small thing look at the subject which is being discussed. I was testing it in an expert way. A lay man was not attempting the repair that you are pointing two wires. A practical man is never ever giving attention to such "Calligraphy". If the video didn't work for you, no worries as the same time it worked for thousands. So instead of doing a negative comment just pass the video and go ahead. Also giving a look to your channel shows there is no single video upload. I am challenging you to upload something of your own better than me.
