Phyllis Schlafly & Me

Phyllis Schlafly was an antifeminist Republican political organizer who paved the way for alt-right political conservatism and the candidacy of Donald Trump. She also played a surprisingly influential role in Cristen's upbringing. She was a hypocrite, she was against women in the work force, yet went to college and got a law degree, and instead of staying home like a good wife, she was out spreading her narrow minded conservative opinions publicly

To me, the success of Phyllis Schafly can be equated to what would have happened if Malcolm X had stayed alive and been successful. He was a against the Civil Rights Act and believed that whites and blacks should be separated voluntarily. - Though not segregated (which is involuntary).

I was unaware that Phyllis Schlafly was dead. I am glad she's gone. There are only a very few people about whom I would say that. Among them are Hitler, Idi Amin Dada, Pol Pot, and Stalin. The problem with Schlafly is the same as with other conservatives. They have an agenda, and they have money, and they use that money to push their agenda down everyone else's throat. Have an opinion, that's fine. Act upon your own morals, that's fine. But DO NOT mess with the law and force me to kowtow to the way you believe I should be living my life because that is the most unamerican thing imaginable. For doing that her entire life, I am glad that the witch is most sincerely DEAD.

I am fundamentally opposed to Phyllis Schlaffly or Germaine Greer telling any woman how to live her life. I'm a guy, so I realize my opinion may be suspect, but as the father of three daughters, I strongly believe that every woman should be empowered to chart her own course through life. Our oldest daughter is a full time mother of four and the other two have graduate degrees and careers outside the home. All three say they are happy with their choices. That's the goal of feminism, self determination.

The 1960s and 70s feminists made a huge mistake by not finding a way to connect with women who were stay at home mothers. My mother was a registered nurse and she had mostly female heroes, but the feminists of that era were tone deaf to people whose lives were about a career.

Thank you, Cristen, for sharing. It's important recognize that "feminism" hasn't always reached everyone, and to realize why people may support someone that seems obviously problematic to us (now). People naturally gravitate towards those they feel have their best interest at heart, and maybe in this dumpster fire of a year we can try to find the nugget of hope appalling candidates use to make themselves appealing.

Happy birthday and thank you so much for all the research and everything that you do. I am sure you make a difference to many people. Rape was legal inside marriage until 1997 in my country. Hence, you could not report on your husband raping you, he could legally do whatever he wanted to you. I grew up in a society where that was the assumption. I am now 36 and still am amazed at how little we know about consent in any given country. I wish the new generations around the world knew better than we did.
Signeficant (2 года назад)
My mother and I are both feminists. We both believe in equal rights, equal opportunities and equal pay for men and women. That said, I don't think a woman should be shamed for chosing to be a stay at home mom or shamed for chosing to proceed her career. The thing that are most important to me is that everyone should have the possibility to do exactly what they want with their life. No discrimination of any kind should stop you from forfilling your dreams. Something like skincolor or gender should not limit your possibilities because you didn't chose that. You should be defined by your actions, the things you have acomplished and all your opinions, not something you can't controle! (Sorry if this is messy, english is not my first language...)
ThePoolIsAbstract (2 года назад)
Hi Cristen! I have a question: why is there an assumption that men are funnier than women? I live in the UK, and there is a drive to get more women on panel comedy shows due to the current gender imbalance. I have heard some explanations for this imbalance but don't know if they have any merit e.g. men are more competitive and women are more collaborative.
neikaplay (2 года назад)
It is very hard to think that women in the U.S. had to choose family or career. On the flip side, I am from a small island where incomes are low so families didn't have the option of stay at home moms. Most women always had to work and raise their children. End result is that we accepted that women were hard workers too and we ended up having a female prime minister and most people were fine with it.

As a 65 year old man I have come to understand that feminists are just angry and feminism is for wimpy men. The left is slowly but surely destroying the nation by dismantling the supporting structure of our culture. You folks have to open your eyes.

The hard part is defeating the idea's while not attacking the person. I say this as liberal social libertarian atheistic feminist who was once a hawkish Evangelical neocon MRA. The good works of SMNTY and others can change people if those of us who are misguided have our ideas systemically destroyed while the character attacks are used sparingly.

I see how important it is to repeat these opposing p/o/v for ourselves to not only be ready and prepared, but also to practice empathy. It's just that these things are a reminder of how shitty an opposing point of view is (ei. marriage = consent to sex/rape).
ZX Rider (2 года назад)
Well here's my 2 cents worth. Do you still expect that guy (male sex) to get that box on top of a shelf or lift a heavy box for you? If you ever get married do you want to be taken care of? While selecting a candidate for an office do you select one who will follow the Constitution (for the survival of our country) or the one who pledges to take care of your needs? The questions should tell you the reasons why the ERA never passed. Why so many men will never get married. To burst your bubble Margret Sanger was a bisexual Marxist who was also racist. It seems Mrs. Schlafly was right on the money. I personally couldn't stand the woman but that's more my opinion than her stance.
ZX Rider (2 года назад)
No she did not, biological function is not the same as employment. My wife could lift 100  + pounds and did during her WORK life. You see it's not sexist it's a simple fact of business. If you owned a business and had 2 employee's in the same job and one couldn't preform a duty and the other could you could fire the one lacking in ability or you could pay the one lacking less. So you show even more my point, a lack of rational thinking. No wonder Obama was elected to office.

That's not even a little unreasonable to ask of someone you care about And yes, if I get married, I do want to be taken care of. AND I want to take care of him too. A healthy relationship is a give and take. And I don't see what that has to do with the election PS, even though Sanger wasn't a saint, she contributed to women's health and rights in a positive way. John Hopkins and plenty of doctors experimented on black people and women without their consent, but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't value the advances they made. We just need to recognize that they also had major downfalls and recognize the wrongs with the good

Hey, Cristen! My name is Rylie, and I was wondering if you would be be so kind as to promote the hashtag #IAmMoreThanADistraction. On the first Friday of November, I and several other girls in my school are going to wear pretty sensible clothing, which happens to be against dress code (i.e. shorts, thin straps, etc.) and writing the hashtag across the part of our body dress code is trying to cover, or even across hats and sunglasses. I even have lots of boys in my school wanting to participate. I'd love to have your help promoting this. You and contact me through my twitter @insertemoquote or my Tumblr lonely-koalas. My reasoning behind this movement is that I am tired of my body being both sexualized and treated as if it is illegal before I even get into high school. My parents and several other members of my family are supporting my cause and I'm kind of proud of where this has gone, but I'd love to help spread it across a wider base, and since I don't have a very large following, I'd love to have your help! Being a stay-at-home mom doesn't make you non-feminist. It's a separate issue. Feminism and pursuing a career aren't trade-offs, my mom was a stay at home mom (went back to work after we all graduated high school and moved onto post-secondary) and she's very much a feminist (women's lib as she calls it haha). She too went to university, dropped out when she had my brother, and continued with distance-learning (she was 20 and it was the early 70s). She got a lot of backlash for continuing school when she "should have just been a good housewife." The reality is, feminism is about females having a choice, whether it be to stay at home or pursue a career, her *own* choice.
Olga Starcher (2 года назад)
People we love can be wrong. Having the option to stay at home and raise children is privilege born of little more than luck of finding a good marital partner. And for those women who later find out that their reliable husband was not so reliable after all, years of hard-fought and hard-won laws and regulations are brought in to remedy their situation (hard-fought and hard-won by feminist activists, by the way). Women whose self-induced feelings of inadequacy were abated by Phyllis Schlafly are entitled to their opinions, but I find that I, personally, cannot and will not extend to them my empathy, understanding, and/or respect for having those opinions. I say this both as a woman who falls into the socioeconomic demographic to which Schlafly spoke and as a daughter of a woman who finds many of Schlafly's ideas acceptable.

I learned about her in APUSH (I got a 5, I don't mean to brag or anything) and I hated her. her name is a bad word to me. its's sad that people still think this way. you can have best of both worlds once men and women are considered equal, especially when they take equal responsibility in the home. you can work and still raise a family

On the contrary, I believe the choice was so hard for Cristen's mom (and is so hard for many women) because she truly wanted to and enjoyed spending lots of time with her children, just as much as she wanted to advance her career.
Velta Moriya (2 года назад)
As bad as it may taste, the world needs women like Phyllis Schlafly to push back. She may have been way overboard and actually intended to suppress women and keep them submissive and dismiss abuse, but she wouldn't have let us send women to war just because some man was salty about women in the military and wanted to "make a point". She would have made sure women got better maternity leave laws. She would have been a buffer against ultra feminism that does force us to behave like men and shame us for liking anything girly or being feminine. She would have helped us get some relief in a world where we, as women, are expected to do it all at home and bring in 50% of the income - If she were involved in politics today. We need to take a step back from feminism. It's hurting us when it goes overboard. We need someone to push back. We, as women, asked to be equal. We are equal. We are just as good in different ways. But the world wants us to have the qualities, drives and accomplishments of a man AND of a woman, or we are failures. We asked to be included in the workplace and we are now given those jobs, paid less and still expected to bear all the responsibilities of family and home. Expected to marry, to have children and to try to be as successful as a man. I am suppose to feel ashamed if I am being supported by someone else. The feminists made a bad deal. We need someone as crazy as Phyllis to push back so we can have some relief, because feminism DOES NOT WORK to get respect that women need. She was right about men should treat feminist like men. That is how they all want us to be now. I have received that message my entire life from feminists, that I need to change to be more like a man to be good enough. That the reason I'm not more like a man is because I have been brainwashed. I've had it.

My mom also held Phyllis Schlafly as a role model and actively worked to stop the ratification of ERA in our state (I am older than you). My earliest memories were of being taken to meetings or of having them in our house because she was president of the local Eagle Forum branch in our town. Some of those quotes take me back. I would consider myself a feminist now but it has been a long and strange transition to these beliefs because so many of those quotes you said in the video were taught to me at such at the age when you assume everything your parents tell you are true. I do remember Mom not being able to explain to me why ERA was bad at the time, but I think that was because she didn't want to get into the seedier details of the fear-based rhetoric that was associated with the stop ERA movement (I was a small child at the time). A couple of years ago, she was proudly telling her grandchildren of the work she did in the 70's and the courage she had to develop to speak in front of senators in Washington D.C. While 45 year-old me does not agree with 38 year-old my mom, I do admire the work and commitment she had to be a political activist while keeping a home and raising 4 children in the 70's. The irony is also not lost on me how hard she used her voice to diminish women's voices all across the country.
DaaaahWhoosh (2 года назад)
Yeah, but feminists are also fine with women giving up their careers to take care of children. Right? I mean, the only difference is that feminists want you to have the choice. People like Phyllis might be right in some cases, people could agree with them, but as I understand it feminism is all about giving people the chance to disagree, to go their own way and do things other people wouldn't want to do.
MsFreshadenu (3 месяца назад)
DaaaahWhoosh not exactly. Feminism used to be more liberal. With every victory, feminism becomes a much more extreme and exclusive form of ideology. The womens march excluded pro life women after the donald trump victory. If you are of the opinion that marriage is a religious institution, which is defined by the union of a man and a woman, then you are not considered a feminist by the majority of feminists. Its a position that is held on the left which claims to be a position that spans the entire spectrum of political affiliation, but is not. Its the equivalent of Fox News claiming to be fair and balanced. It is not.

Brittany's response is correct, but it isn't really the point here. I think the point of this video was really that even if she was wrong, it is worth understanding the perspective that lead people who you may respect to, in turn, respect those with whom you vehemently disagree. It is a message of understanding the perspectives of others, even if you find their views abhorrent. Indeed, if you don't, you can never hope to change anyone's mind. People don't change minds when their views are attacked. They change minds when they are listened to, respected, and given a safe space to explain away their own error. By the way, I recently prepared to debate Shlaffly's son on a political issue before a State Senate Committee. I let him overhear how I had specifically prepared to counter what he was saying. He left without making public comment. We won the vote.
Brittany Pines (2 года назад)
Today, yes...in theory. But there are plenty of women, both now but especially in the past, who have viewed "staying at home" as anti-feminist. Many times it is presented as "Be a feminist and have an education/career/etc" OR "stay at home and submit to the patriarchy." This is part of the reason why feminism is still viewed in such a bad light by many, although it is becoming more about choice in the current times.

Does anyone else find it extremely ironic how although Phyllis Schlafly fought relentlessly against feminism her activism wouldn't be possible if it had not been for feminist. If it hadn't been for women who fought for her right to vote. To be heard. To have the education she earned. Or even the brave women who's day to day actions, hard work and pioneering made it possible for anyone too even be willing to listen to a woman. Biting the very hand that fed her. She was either a genius and was just marketing to a certain audience knowing it as going to be popular. Or just truly didn't give a fuck

What's really ironic is that Phyllis Sclafly earned her degree in 1944 and long before any of these empowering movements took place. Feminism did nothing for her and her mother, who earned her degree in 1920. But you don't know any of that because it doesn't fit into your victim narrative, do you? I wonder why. The ideal is to give a choice. I agree with you that nobody should look down on a woman for choosing to stay home, or for whatever they choose. Those feminists who say otherwise, I think they are being hypocritical.
Hannah Therese (2 года назад)
Most feminists do not think that way. 2nd wave feminists perhaps, but not today's feminists.
neeneko (2 года назад)
It was less about forcing women to have careers, and more about trying to balance out the pressure to stay at home. Balancing such things is tricky since people tend to perceive relative change in differences rather than absolute. Think of it this way: If the default is to hold women at home up as the right/honorable thing to do, then any attempt to hold up an alterative or even treat it as an equal option is interpreted by many as a cheapening or degrading of that proper (singular) level of honor.

Phyllis Schlafly says get married when you are fertile and raise children for 16-18 years. After raising your children, climb the career ladder. I guess that's what she did. I can see why many women would like Phyllis Schlafly. I am a product of this, that's what my mum did. But I had no help from my mum (or any of the female relatives) when I was choosing my career because my mum chose to spend all her time raising her kids not her career. I guess, this depends on what type of woman you are and your core values. Obviously, intelligent women (feminists) would choose more opportunities (over less options) because that equals more power!

B Black thank you for proving my point about the lack of men and boy's education, you can't even put together an intelligible comment that makes any sense.

Mama MOB actions speak louder than words, feminism is not for equality.

+Crazy White Guy Opinion if you believe in the equality of the sexes then you believe in feminism. Because that's the definition of the word. Being unintelligent, like when you don't know what words mean even though you can google it, is another word for stupid. I was just pointing out that you are in fact stupid. I wasn't insulting you. If you are insulted by being called stupid you can learn things like the definition of the word feminism and not be stupid. The only person insulting you is you.

Natalie D that is what I am doing, fighting for men's rights. I respect the fact that you have been honest about your feelings and have been respectful in your comments. It shows your maturity and your passion in your beliefs. We should all be fighting for equality, not to give one sex more rights or opportunity than the other. Feminists claim that they fight for equal rights for all people yet I have never seen feminists fight for more federal funding for men's health issues or fight for men's paternity rights or men and boy's education or to stop male genital mutilation or to criminalize false rape accusations. Every time men fight for these things feminists fight us on these issues or they blame the patriarchy for everything while never taking responsibility for the things they have done to oppress men's rights.
