Crazy Rich Singapore is Coming Alive

4406 ratings | 234366 views
It was once known as a place where people went to work, rather than play - but a lot has changed. Singapore now boasts six of the world's best bars, 47 Michelin stars, and a vibrant mix of cultures. Many commented that Singapore is boring due to its smallness, concrete jungle, lack of mountains, lakes etc. When I working in Singapore, I never felt boring. Why? Cos I treated Singapore as the capital city of the “country” ASEAN. I have gone to HK, Seoul, Tokyo, Osaka, Bali, Bangkok, Ho Chi Min City, Sibu, Medan, etc etc due to its close proximity to the other Asian countries and its many cheap Budget Airlines fares. I live in LA but I never have visited NY.

Singapore has been alive for a long time. Trying to piggyback off "Crazy Rich Asians"? I don't think Westerners are surprised there are rich people in Asia. Show me Crazy Rich Africans. That might surprise some people. Cote D'Ivoire, Ethiopia and Ghana are growing fast.

I get that Singapore is rich. But how are "Indian" and "Malay-muslim" quaters ever counted as attractions? I bet 90% of western and asian tourists are never interested in those places. In the end, Singapore is merely about ultra-expensive bars and garden, isn't it. Politically, it is opressive and there is no freedom of speech either.

This video just told me how poor I am.
Abdirashid Hassan (18 days ago)
I don’t understand this Western obsession with multiculturalism. Every video I see of cities, the first thing they seem to talk about is that whether the city is a melting-pot or and if it ain’t then that city is bland. I am sensing a globalist agenda from these mouthpieces that brandish themselves as media platforms.

scylla019 (22 days ago)
Looks very cool but in fact it’s all tourist attractions. When asking locals to hang out, there’s only 2 activities: “go where to eat?” Or “go where to drink?”
scylla019 (22 days ago)
As Rem Koolhaas said in Singapore Songlines, Singapore is a Potemkin metropolis. It’s all appearances to boost tourism. In truth, we are culturally sterile. All our culture and nostalgia is remade for appearances and younger generations of Singaporeans aren’t connected to their traditions. Our nature is manmade. Our conserved buildings are a home to hostess karaoke bars and our people are pretending to be american
magicalworl34 (23 days ago)
As a Singaporean myself, I would never understand why people would called us "culturally rich". We are NOT. We may seemed like it, but no, we're not. I mean take the movie, Crazy Rich Asians for example. They tried to make it show as if it's all Singapore, but truth is 70% of the movie were filmed in Malaysia, while the remaining 30% are the Newton Food Centre, Marina Bay Sands, and the church. Our local dialect (Hokkien) is practically dying, because lesser and lesser people know how to understand let alone speak it. We kept claiming food from Malaysia as our food, but let's be honest, WE (Singaporean) ALL KNOW we're just kidding ourselves. So let's be real for a second here, Singapore ain't culturally rich, we are economically rich and I, for one, am extremely proud of that, but we are certainly not culturally rich. Thanks.
Lee Nick (1 day ago)
Please don't impersonate yourself as Singaporean, we are not claiming all the food originate from Singapore ? Its juz that we cook it better than others. So stop ur nonsense. Thanks
d E (2 days ago)
Currently as a j2 student i usually speak hokkien with my family and relatives and was quite shocked at how many of my current generation didnt even understand hokkien

thucydides Neo hell no.. it originated from Hainan Island, China. Made its way to Melaka when it was still straits settlement, and then to Penang and then to Singapore when the capital of Malaya was changed from Georgetown to Singapore. Edit*: the hainanese live like nomads at the time, as they work for the British, they follow wherever the British go, the peranakan does the same thing too. That’s why most ended up in Singapore since it was the British’s “last stop” before independence

I'm from Hawaii. I'm traveling around the world SLOWLY. I've been in Singapore for 2 weeks already and will stay at least for 1 more. I'm so impressed w/this place. You guys are smaller than HALF of my hometown island of Oahu. HALF. You are smaller than New York or Los Angeles but you have universal health care (I haven't had medical insurance since my parents died), 9O% home ownership (I sleep in my minivan), one of the largest refineries in the world (I used to work for Chevron, a socially undesirable company), a desalination plant (so why is water so expensive?), a zoo, an amusement park, driverless subway trains which appear every 4 minutes, bilingualism, F-15s patrolling the skies and soon to get F-35s. Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew was the right man for the right time. "Whoever governs Singapore must have that IRON in him. This is not a game of cards." You gotta love that man. I do. And I ain't Singaporean.

Singapore was more alive when it was a kampong. Now everyone is addicted to social media and artificial living. Everyone is getting more dead inside as this country grows "alive".

Singapore was not founded in 1965. It just became independant in 1965. Singapore was founded at 1299. Back then it was called Singapura, which is the malay name for Singapore. In the 1810s Raffles came to singapore, and renamed singapura to singapore. In 1960, Singapore became part of malaysia, and in 1965 Singapore became independant.

A semi-communist concrete jungle run by corporates to funnel their taxes, living off tolerant hard working locals, drained of any culture and replaced by one influenced by their American masters. It isn't boring if you are not one of many slaves stuck living there and feeding those leeching rulers and their business oligarch masters.

Secret Wars well Singapore is the size of a pebble compared to most other countries. It's really easy to manage such a small area. Places like The US and China are some of the most difficult to manage due to their sheer size.

I like Singapore 🇸🇬 I had decent fun & chill time there, not boring but honestly taxi drivers couldn’t stop talking about how tax system works, also most people were nice but at early morning some felt like zombies it was a very depressing morning that time when I had the most cringing quite morning in the middle of crowded bus station near some medical center at mid week, so quite that I could hear my fingers touches on that small bus ticket, will never forget that surreal morning it was oddly beautiful the sky was vanilla violet just few beams of shine reflecting through a soaring modern architecture full of plants felt like a the end of an apocalypse tbh 😌😅✨

this video just showcases the rich, extravagant, opulent side of singapore that appeals to expats and tourists, such as bars, fancy restaurants, hotels, casinos. I see no mention of more the local and accessible sides of the country like the hawker culture or nature reserves, etc

Easy to manage when your country is slightly larger than typical resort islands. Singapore is expensive as fuck tho even for the locals. Cars and houses are extremely expensive. It's a modern small island filled with high rises, pretty similar to Manhattan. If you're into beautiful beaches, mountains and thick rainforests then Singapore is not the right place to visit.
Austin Dylan (4 months ago)
If there is 1 city that will mandatorily micro chip it's people, Singapore will definitely be the first city/state to make this happen, paving the way for the tyrannical New World Order. It's citizens are the most docile on the planet & will never revolt against tyranny.
