(4 Nov 2018) LEADIN: A conference in Lebanon has called for greater protections for journalists to do their work without fear of being killed. The Arab world is currently the most dangerous place in the world for reporters, according to UNESCO.   STORYLINE: Media professionals and other delegates have come together in Beirut to address the ongoing attacks on journalists. The Lebanese Media Ministry and UNESCO organised the conference called "Strengthening regional cooperation to end impunity for crimes and attacks against journalists in the Arab world". The conference coincides with the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists. Regional and local government officials, civil society advocates and journalists discuss the greatest challenges standing in the way of press freedom and journalist safety in the Arab region, and strategies to move forward. Moez Chakchouk, Assistant Director-General of the Communication and Information Sector at UNESCO, says in the past 12 years, from 2006 to 2017, 1,010 journalists have been killed worldwide. "Today we are in extreme need for an agreement to provide journalists with the ability to do their jobs and without fear. Unfortunately, the impunity for these crimes is terrifyingly high." Chakchouk says the Arab region has the highest number of journalists killed with 338 deaths in the region between 2006 and 2017. Lebanese journalist Jiselle Khoury, who is also Director of the Samir Kassir Foundation, which encourages a free press, says freedoms are being lost in Lebanon day by day. "The regression of freedoms today in Lebanon is terrifying. From the government, the environment, the religious authorities; I believe it's really important for us to do this conference today." A member of the Iraqi government is also present, speaking up for freedom of expression for journalists. Major General Saad Maan, spokesperson of the Ministry of Interior in Iraq, says: "We have founded a Committee for Ending Impunity Against Journalists, and also to go after those who violate journalists, keeping in mind that the environment in Iraq, when it comes to freedom of expression, is more ideal than other countries in the region." Deputy Director of Human Rights Watch in the MENA region, Lama Fakih says the vast majority of journalists have been killed through crossfire in the region. She says the recent murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi is "one of the most high profile and outrageous killings of a journalist in recent history" "We have been pressing for an international commission to investigate his killing because we don't believe he will get accountability if it is the Saudi Arabians themselves that are investigating his case," she says. The order to kill Khashoggi came from the highest level of the Saudi government, according to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
