WTF Is an ETF?

Оценок: 1120 | Просмотров: 93397
Mar 7 -- There are now over 6,000 ETFs on 60 exchanges and ETFs exist for everything from corporate bonds to gold bars to oil futures. Like the USB port or a gas pump, ETFs have basically standardized the entire universe of investing so that everything under the sun now trades like shares of Apple. But what, exactly is an ETF and why have they become so popular? Bloomberg explains in this short video. Like this video? What's the difference between index funds and ETFs? Are they the same thing, but different names?
Al Rocky (26 дней назад)
Vanguard index funds and their corresponding ETFs are different share classes of the same identical investment. An index fund like mutual funds trade at day's end while an ETF can be purchased and sold just like a stock, many times a day. "In Index Fund you are buying all of the big companies in the stock market." --- Misleading as an index fund might contain only the small companies in the stock market. "Index Fund your money is only expose to stocks" ---- Incorrect as there are bond index funds. "... it's [ETFs] for commodities rather than stocks. " --- Wrong twice in the same sentence.

Index basically means you "copy" some collection of assets. It could be S&P500 or DAX30 for example. ETFs are portfolios of the pick and distribution of whatever assets the ETF issuer chooses. It's the same as a mutual fund, except it's for commodities rather than stocks.

In Index Fund you are buying all of the big companies in the stock market. In ETF you are not only buying stocks but a wide range of securities like bonds, commodities, oils and etc. In short in Index Fund your money is only expose to stocks while in ETF your money is expose to different kind of investment tool but you are buying them in a package. Isn't that nice?

How can you break a share into a small percentage.
Elias Håkansson (30 дней назад)
If an institution has several shares they can break their shares up in fractional shares at a premium. The institution uses the premium they charge to "buy back" the fractional shares from their customers whenever they redeem.

Did We forget the "fun" part. When a CROOK, possesses 1 Ton in Physical Gold and Sells 10 Tons of Paper Gold, He bets that everyone doesn't want it back, all at once.....Wrong! A Panic will guarantee it!

ETFs are not fractional reserve instruments.

ETFs are cute.

So much for productivity... Naaah, instead of building a long term solid productive economy, we'll just suck all the wealth out of it and trade it to the members of the elite clubs via paper funds and ???? profit?

Informative video. However, the video fails to indicate that Gold ETF's are just paper. Time and time again, it's been proven that banks either don't honor their contractual ETF backed by physical gold, don't have the gold backing to begin with, or outright just follow the price. If anything, this is a Ponzi scheme, similar to the antics of Bernie Madoff.

What the Hell is an ETF? .. Not sure what an ETF is, but I once read that if you add up all the paper claims of ownership of the metal silver, that amount of silver is significantly higher than the total world physical supply of silver that can be bought and stored. So... a lot of paper silver certificates are being bought and sold which can never be redeemed for real silver. WTF?

+SamStam12 oh apparently you dont know the america owns planet earth. cause were all about freedom and the fact that we lock more people in prison than any other nation is irrelevant. the possibility that a megalomaniac might become president leads me to believe even if we had their gold we wouldn't give it to them anyway. man sometimes i feel so ashamed of my country its sad. truth is like it or not there is only one person who can shut down this greed and corruption. I just hope he gets his chance in november

+UFO PROOF Same thing with a few European cony tires. They're still waiting a decade later for the United States to return their gold.

+SamStam12 I believe it. You remember when Venezuela demanded all their gold ? the entire EU and IFM were struggling to actually find the gold I'm not even sure they had it all . like they still might be waiting on some of it

+UFO PROOF There's been certain accounts by customers at JP Morgan who own physical gold at their vaults, and refused access to see them.
ETF = CDS if you don't see it the human race is doomed....
Elias Håkansson (30 дней назад)
CDSs have a certain risk of default associated with them. I guess ETFs have a certain risk of the value fluctuating, but that's literally the purpose of ETFs; it's a futures market for the value of commodities. So other than that, there's no reason to look at ETFs and CDSs as similar instruments, and doing so would not precipitate the end of humanity.
CeeStyleDj (1 год назад)
Those are two separate Investments. How are you saying they're the same? Maybe your lack of information is doomed LOL

+Mr. KNRed X Literally every commodity in the history of the world is a supply and demand commodity.
Mojo NL (9 месяцев назад)
You are right on the most part, but I have to correct you on one thing. ETF's are less risky than stocks. Where as stocks (one company) could go down (also affected by sentiment) an ETF often is a collection of more stocks, so the risk is spread more evenly. Even if people get scared of techcompanies, and your Tech-ETF is losing value, the risk is still smaller than investing in just one techcompany stock, such as snappchat.

+MrJtknight Is that not the case even when buying a commodity itself? If I invested in either copper, or an copper ETF, both would reduce in value if large reserves of the metal were discovered.

+MrJtknight I see, thank you for your reply.
