FILM DESCRIPTION: A group of intrepid humans attempts to save the Earth from vicious extraterrestrials in this extremely popular science-fiction adventure. Borrowing liberally from War of the Worlds, Aliens, and every sci-fi invasion film inbetween, director Roland Emmerich and producer and co-writer Dean Devlin present a visually slick, fast-paced adventure filled with expensive special effects and large-scale action sequences. The story begins with the approach of a series of massive spaceships, which many on Earth greet with open arms, looking forward to the first contact with alien life. Unfortunately, these extraterrestrials have not come in peace, and they unleash powerful weapons that destroy most of the world's major cities. Thrown into chaos, the survivors struggle to band together and put up a last-ditch resistance in order to save the human race. As this is a Hollywood film, this effort is led by a group of scrappy Americans, including a computer genius who had foreseen the alien's evil intent (Jeff Goldblum), a hot-shot jet pilot (Will Smith), and the President of the United States (Bill Pullman). While some critics objected to the film's lack of originality and lapses in logic, the combination of grand visual spectacle and crowd-pleasing storytelling proved irresistible to audiences, resulting in an international smash hit. Russell, the true real hero of the movie! And he was a drunk!

One of my favourite personal film climaxes. Final twist with the missile just ramping up the tension, bit of emotion, soundtrack going absolutley barmy (see also toy soldiers 1991) a great last line and one of my favourite earth shattering explosions. Near perfect

Symbolising the optimism of '90s movies compared to 21st century movies.

If they can destroy the little spaceships with their bullets... why did they waste their missiles on the little ships..

Don't know why this movie always gets so much hate. I thought it was brilliant. Big, cheesy and stupid, and brilliant.

In the words of my generation! *”UP YOURS!!!”* that’s the most American way to greet and end an extraterrestrial life.

Should have had a wingman ram him to stop the sacrifice, saying “This is how we’ll win. Not by fighting what we hate. Saving what we love.”

This is one of my favorite scenes ever. I remember the first time I saw this movie, I barely kept myself from crying during Bill Pulman's speech, then this happened and I just let myself go. Seeing it again now I can't help but thinking, everytime, "that line from james duval really takes me away from the moment". Still a great scene, tho.

Including  this final scene,  some scenes and story of this movie is similar to "Tokyo ice age (Ultra Q series 1966), I think.

This was Emmerich finest work, and sadly the last time we saw Quaid doing filmmaking before he went under the radar. Years later I still enjoy watching this film.

kind of ironic that he flew up the hole of the mothership, given the probing he probably received when he was abducted
Marco Oliva (2 months ago)
Well, the aliens did rape him before.
Steve Smith (2 months ago)
In the original version of this scene, this guy was never given a plane. So he shows up in his bi-plane to enter the ship and ram the energy beam. They cut it cause they realized even for this film, that would be too rediculous. The deleted scene exists though

Metal slug 2 also used this ending
WaveForceful (2 months ago)
It was shameful how they never referenced Russel in the second movie. He was the bravest one out of the bunch, nobody forced him to sacrifice himself, he did that on his own.

In metal slug 2 aka metal slug x, it did the same thing at the end.
Peter Dacey (3 months ago)
So originally he joined the battle in his biplane with a missile strapped to the plane before it was changed to the above? Good choice, filmmakers! By forcing his decision to come after the missile jam, we got that terrific moment at 1:15 that wasn't originally scripted. Wonderful!

Randy Quaid can play a really awesome role. We all know him best as cousin Eddie from the National Lampoon's Vacation comedies, but out of all his roles this was the best he did. His character for this was so well written. He plays the guy we dislike in the film, because he is a drunk and irresponsible person. Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin did an awesome job with making him become the hero at the end of the film.

They probed him, he probes them back in the worst way possible. With a nuke in their space ships asshole. What a hero!
This is like in metal slug 2 in last mission, once rugname is destroyed, she will do his attack, flying Tara appears and goes through the beam
TheWolfTamer (3 months ago)
I would have preferred Russel's son or heck even the daughter to be the main character in resurgence

A Team of Star Fleet Defiant Ships would have showered that alien ship constant phaser hits and Photon torpedoes!!! And they would have blown that ship to kingdom come without any trouble at all!!!!
