Thigh Gaps, Washboard Abs & Weight Loss | Vegan Body Image

body image is a HUGE topic in today's society and the vegan community is no exception. many people go vegan in order to lose weight and look "better." you can find thousands of videos, books, and article on vegan weight loss, raw vegan weight loss, how to lose weight on a vegan diet, et cetera. i made this video for the people who have gone vegan but are frustrated with their appearance not being "perfect." maybe they are still new, maybe their body is healing, maybe it's how they are built. the point is that it's not everything. health is a GREAT and important reason to go and stay vegan and I'd never say otherwise. {{MORE VIDEO DESCRIPTION & RESOURCES BELOW LINKS}} ★Subscribe: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=BiteSizeVegan ★The Vegan NuggetPlaylist!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0mmoNxQsEw&list=PLmIqdlomtuStUIWj3h-RzdXx8z6Ex5gyS&feature=share ★Visit: http://www.bitesizevegan.com and sign up for the NEWSLETTER! ★Donate: http://www.bitesizevegan.com/donate.html ★Shop: http://www.bitesizevegan.com/store.html ★Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BiteSizeVegan ★Twitter: https://twitter.com/BiteSizeVegan health it a fantastic reason to go vegan! however, most of us associate health with how attractive we perceive ourselves to be (ie how thin we are). when we really look at the reasons to be vegan, though, just how important is how we look? how much does a suffering animal in need of liberation care about your love handles? is the environment or the world's hungry people helped by you loosing those last 3 pounds? think about it ;) Cow footage from http://youtu.be/hGBFnNZwuvI (Pure Relax. But losing weight and looking better is definitely an added bonus that could make some people go vegan and as long as they are actually vegan then their motives are irrelevant. It would promote the cause better to just embrace that people want to look good.

Of course your health is in the interest of the animals. You eat shit and get sick. In the worst case you have to take medication tested on animals.
kiwifruitkl (1 year ago)
I agree. Veganism is foremost an animal rights issue. However, too many people opt for veganism as a fad diet, lose weight, and then say, "OMG, veganism works!" or gain weight and say, "OMG, veganism sucks!" People who stay vegan seem to be doing veganism for ethical living in their frame of mind. I have yet to meet someone who choose the vegan lifestyle as a political protest against the industries that use traditional farm animals (cattle, swine, birds, fish) and really is someone who advocates a more sustainable future, which does mean consumption of bugs. Bugs are not vegan, but they can give more protein than the traditional, large farm animals and use less water resources. Therefore, I think entomophagy is the more practical/realistic future, not veganism. I like the mindset of veganism, but I think it's unnecessary when you consider that you can actually eat bugs.

i never had a thigh gap, like since puberty, until i went vegan. when i went vegan suddenly my waist had a shape (a curve instead of just being boxy) and i had a thigh gap. it's awesome lol. like second puberty

the only season why I went vegan 3 weeks ago is to lose weight...
no problem. don't let idiots shame you. veganism has many benefits. veganism is the healthiest way to lose weight. i lost 40 pounds in my first year of veganism, with minimal exercise. now in my second year i'm cutting out processed foods (as much as i can) and trying to exercise more often. my health improved a lot, too. anyone who tries to diminish veganism's health benefits is a privileged asshole who doesn't know what it's like to suffer from serious medical conditions (obesity is one of them) that can be reversed or improved by diet

You are so impressive. I have been vegan AND I have been training for a year and a half but I an just not gaining muscle. I am not a raw vegan though. I eat what I need, should I eat more than what I am hungry? Should I have more protein? I don't want to gain back the weight I lost. I do have cookies sometimes but I go back to my weight after with my fitness pal

Like it or not, vanity maybe the best hope for the animals/environment. If veganism wasn't such an awesome weight loss plan I would never have tried it. So I guess that makes me an "unethical" vegan or maybe I shouldn't call myself vegan at all, but that's the reality: "Make me hot and/or make me rich" mentality.

I originally became vegan because of all the horrific things that were happening to animals. At this time, I knew nothing of the health benefits of going vegan; all I did was eat a crap ton more fruits and veggies, replaced animal protein with healthy plant-based protein such as tofu, beans, etc. Two weeks later, I noticed my skin looked brighter and I was getting more quality sleep. I noticed my tummy was flatter. I went on the scale and I saw that I lost weight :D I didn't even do any exercise! I REPEAT, I DIDN'T EVEN DO ANY EXERCISE! One month later I noticed that my horrible abdominal cramps were gone! And usually when I have my period I get bad cramps that last before and during my period. Last week when I had my period, I was only mildly achy, no cramps! Also, this was my second period while on a vegan diet. I'm actually looking forward to my next period to see how great I feel! Is that weird? lol Don't really care because I made such a great decision :D

But health and beauty are yet another way to promote veganism to those selfish nobs who dont care about the environment, animals, etc...
Angry Vegan Cyclist (1 year ago)
Not sure if that was a r/vegancirclejerk-esque joke or serious misunderstanding. I know that most vegans care about the animals/environment. However it should be common sense that most non-vegans don't care about either (or say they love animals but still eat them). So again, I think we should keep preaching how veganism is healthier so we can get more people to become vegan (since most nonvegans I've met don't care about anything except themselves).
fuck you for assuming people who care about their health can't also care about the environment and animals

Sometime ago there was a rather intense debate over the thigh gap issue (non-issue). The intensity of exchanges which took place took me entirely by surprise. Apparently for some, thigh gap is a big deal. To be blunt I was pretty much stunned that anything so superficial could promote what seemed to be outright hatred. Vicious attacks went back and forth between various camps, and this war of words continued for months. Given the points you've just made, about which I agree, the whole body image thing just seems ridiculous - as it still does. I admit that if the shadow of your ass weighs 5 pounds, body image might be a personal issue. However, going vegan only to drop some weight is simply selfish and pretty one dimensional. If you can't connect the dots between your dietary choices, the environment, and animal suffering then you're not really vegan.

In my personal experience, doing it for health led to giving up because you can lose weight on other diets. When it was just about my health it was just about me, but learning more about what the animals go through and what it does to the environment motivated me more because those things are so much bigger than me. Especially the environmental impact because that affects every single living being on the planet.
veganism has many benefits. the health reasons are convincing enough, though. health is more than just weight loss.

Love your videos, all of them. Here's my unsolicited opinion, I know no one asked for it, so here it is. Animals too dead, environment too damaged, ass too fat, cows too farty & thirsty, everybody else is doing it, my favorite A-lister douche-bag went vegan or I'm trying to shave a 1/1000th off my Strava PR to get that KOM, WHO CARES, vegan results are more important than the cause. Here's why, every time another person joins our kick-ass club, it's a win for them and for us, regardless of our motivation. Every new vegan saves an animal life, a bit of the environment, cuts their risk of heart disease, will probably start a youtube channel, will be asked about their protein and will look better in their jeans, Halle-freakin-lujah. Bring on the noobs, for the good of us all.

N. Lengyel (2 years ago)
Emily, you're an inspiration. I've been watching your videos for a long time now and only recently decided to go from vegetarian to full vegan, and you're one of the people who convinced me to do it. It was my plan all along but I always found it hard because of the social aspects and practicality. I have to admit that weightloss is one of the main motivations for me, because I've been vegetarian for 5 years and still gained weight because all of my friends, family and coworkers would essentially push dairy on me and sometimes fish. But the reason I went vegetarian in the first place was because I've always liked the taste of veggies better while meat tended to disgust me. My mom cooked lots of vegetarian meals for me growing up (because the country we're from has plenty of traditional and popular meat-free dishes), so I guess that helped shape my taste and opinion on meat. I went vegetarian for the first time in 7th grade, and I received comments from my friends like "I don't get how you can be vegetarian, when you have to be born that way and you're not". Not to mention the protein argument. People are terribly misinformed. Anyway, the point of my ramble is that weightloss seems to be the main motivation for people to do anything, so if that helps them get started then I think it's a good thing. What's most important is that people are educated and conscious about their choises and how these affect the animals and the planet.

this is great! I've been gaining weight because I calorie restricted most of my life. now I'm not sure what exactly to try but hey the animals sure are happier. :) that made me feel way better about gaining some weight. loo
kingmike40 (2 years ago)
I did it for my health. There are still billions of people eating animals so me trying to help them is a waste of time, but trying to keep my 48 year old body health is something everybody should do anyway. My definition of a "Health Nut". Somebody who abuses or neglects his/her body for 30 years than expects a doctor to heal them with a pill. That's nutty.
anyone who tries to diminish veganism's health benefits is a privileged asshole who doesn't know what it's like to suffer from diet related diseases. i considered veganism when i was desperately googling how to fix my hormonal issues naturally. without that initial trigger i may still have never considered going vegan. i know no other vegans, apart from the people i've converted

Quite frankly wanting to improve your health is still a good reason as any other. While being moral is always a good reason it doesn't have to be the one. I went vegan for two reasons. Ethics and my health. Meat has made this 16 year old boy 280+ pounds. I felt so damn awful all the time. I had no energy. I still have a ways to go but coming from a guy whos been on 8 different diets, the vegan diet works the best.
annaonearth (2 years ago)

Libera (2 years ago)
But one thing here, I have to say here. When I ate meat, I was unhappy with my weight. I gained weight very easy, so I had to be very carefull with my weight, because I was afraid to become fat. I did diets and my weight was very fluctuating. I gained weight, I loss weight, but this was going on and on. One day I became vegetarian, because I thought that it is healthier. And it really was easier for me to hold my weight a certain way. But I became sick. I had a time were I became obsessed with being skinny. So I ate very less. I lost weight, but I didn't feel good. I felt tired and weak. After that I began to eat meat again. To come out of this obsession with food and being skinny. There came some times when I still wanted to see those images, and videos of how to lose weight (thinspiration) and so on. That's when I found veganism. I thought that it is a crazy diet, where you eat nothing but fruits and vegetables. That sounded crazy to me back than. I wasn't interessted in that. But because I watched that video I got some recommandations from YouTube, one of them were some videos of freelee. I saw the videos of how the animals were mistreated and so on. And than I decided to be vegetarian again. I'm now vegan. And you know what, I have now my goal weight, but I don't care about that. Iol My body is like that from freelee, the only difference is that I look softer, because I'm not that trained like her. But yeah, I'm skinny. Without diet, without restricting. I don't follow RT4, but I eat everything that's good and vegan. Never hungry, but still skinny and healty! I feel healthy. :) (sorry, if my English is bad, it's not my motherlanguage! ^^)

I don't quite grasp the purpose of this video. I understand that the environment and the animals don't care if we don't have a body made from the heavens, and that they are the most important reasons for being vegan, but having a great body associated with this lifestyle can also be a good motivator to keep doing good. I just don't understand what exactly the message is here. Should we feel ashamed for wanting abs or a thigh gap?
i totally agree. don't feel ashamed. it's important to be healthy. people talk about the environment and ethics for animals while missing other big issues, like rising healthcare problems, healthcare costs, and etc that healthy vegan diets solve
JR M (2 years ago)
as shallow as it sounds if your reason for going vegan is weight loss, is GREAT! not all people have the same reasons but is a start and the best part is that u are also helping animals!! good for you keep the good abs work up!

Also complete lack of body fat does not = Health. It is better than being fat, but it isn't actually a competition. It isn't like the one with the least body fat wins something except the admiration of other people similarly neurotically fixated. Even the fitness fanatics seem to have lost the plot a bit. Being fit is nice, but care about something actually meaningful to psychologically healthy humans for fucks sake.

You have to respect that people have different #1s for going vegan, and as a vegan, you should be supportive of any #1 that gets a person to embrace the lifestyle. The healthiest way to get skinny is by going vegan, and you don't have to shame people for favoring a cardio type figure over a body builder type figure. People have different aesthetic preferences, and that is ok, as long as they are healthy and vegan.

I expected to be upset by this video.  I was certainly wrong.  To go vegan for body-image issues is incredibly selfish.  If one isn't moved by the inherent loss of life and exploitation associated with animal products, they are still morally bankrupt, plant-based diet or not.

Tbh it actually pisses me off when people go vegan to be hotter or have a thigh gap. Like geez. There's no magical diet that'll make you into a supermodel.
when i went vegan i lost like 40 pounds. i was literally obese before and suffering from multiple health problems that all reversed and/or improved through a vegan diet. my waist used to be boxy and now it has a curve to it. i never had a thigh gap growing up, and now i do, albeit a small one. you don't have to be a supermodel to look and/or feel good in your body. my self confidence and body confidence has improved a lot, too. i used to have pretty low self esteem that was limiting me in life.
Aaron Verran (2 years ago)
while this may be true a vegan diet can be low in fat and we all know what that does and carbs keep energy up, while it may not be a magic bullet its a viable option for most people with health struggles
Julie Polaski (3 years ago)
Please stop this vegan on vegan hate. So what is someone becomes vegan to get a great body? If your Vegetarian, Flexitarian, or Vegan the less animal products consumed the better! Every bit makes a difference and in turn will help the animals:) I originally started to look into veganism because of the health benefits & body image. It was because of this I started to become more educated on what veganism is all about and started to watch documentaries and become more informed on the Animal Rights movement.

That cow was cute. I honestly felt odd roleplaying as my cat fursona saying I ate chicken and fish, considering that furries could make fursonas based on various birds and aquatic creatures, so it would be like eating them and therefore cannibalism. Another reason I became vegan. "Fish are friends, not food!" -Bruce the Shark from Finding Nemo

The problem I see here is that all beings are different and by far not every vegan looks like a 20 year old athlete. And that is often seen as a bad thing. My two best friends are complete vegans or lets say 'more vegan than me' for more than 15 years and they both look quite different. Non of them look like an athlete. Mary, who is in her early 30s, like me, is very fragile, very skinny, but in a lack of any obvious abs etc. Viola, in her late 30s is rather voluptuous, strong, but also blessed with no obvious muscle mass, but rather love handles. They're both beautiful, caring, strong personalities but nothing that is "advertised" as being "the typical vegan", which gives at least Viola often a hard stand within the vegan community and our society in general, something I condemn completely.
Camila RS (3 years ago)
Great video!!!! Now a days most vegans on ig or youtube are spreading the message as a way to get skinnier. I wonder how many vegans would become meat eaters if magically, eating meat gave you a super hot lean model body. Its a shame how many vegans have become so toxic, hostiles and passive aggressive, instead of forming a loving community to which people can feel interested to join. Thanks for being so genuine, frank and friendly!

Well I just gain weight since going vegan, even when I chucked out all the processed soy products and I only really eat two full cooked meals per day and two small ones like a fruit or a sandwich. Im a 24 year old woman. So I dont get how you guys manage to lose weight. What is your magical secret?
read "eat to live" by dr joel fuhrman. or get the audiobook. it's really good. i lost 40 pounds through veganism in only one year. i eat 2 big raw meals a day and one cooked dinner. the key is to not add oil, salt, or sugar to your food and avoid processed things like flours (so no bread. eat starchy veggies instead) and etc. i eat a lot of fruit and unlimited veggies everyday. restricting calories or skipping meals will make you gain weight. you need to have balanced meals. i'm not saying to eat 100 dried dates with no restriction, but you can have like a huge salad with a couple sliced date pieces to sweeten it up a bit. don't neglect fats, either. again, don't eat a whole avocado, but add like 1/4 of one to a salad every day or every other day
Bunnycoola (2 years ago)
+Sylvanas Windrunner If you're recovering from a surgery, no wonder you gain weight! Your body is HEALING. It takes time to see the results you want. I urge you to be patient. I'm going through a similar struggle. It's mostly finding the right balance between exercise, sleep, and what and how much food you are eating and when you eat it. Everyone's body is different and sometimes it takes a long time of trial and error to find our unique perfect balance. Have you checked out Freelee yet?
JR M (2 years ago)
nutriologist said to me to eat alllll day long. to carry my vegan snacks in the car and eat my veggies all day. I do like 6-7 meals a day. all small all vegan cuz I also gained weight after 2 months vegan soooo the answer is delicious.... eat more !
LucaTheApe (3 years ago)
Oh my gawd Sylvanas how are you girl?
DroidXcon (3 years ago)
+Sylvanas Windrunner you are not eating enough, and when you do eat you swell up because your body knows you are starving yourself so it attempts to retain as much as it can to survive the next long period of starvation. The only supplements you should need is B12 and possibly vit D. the rest should be coming from your diet, if they are not then you do not have enough variety and enough calories to reach your dietary needs. I would suggest figuring out your Basal Metabolic rate, this will tell you how many calories you need just to be alive. Then calculate how many calories you burn working out. Add those up and eat that many calories per day for 3 weeks. Eat Leafy greens, like get a "Power Mix" at costco. eat other veggies like broc, sweet potatos, beans....etc. Make smoothies , with greens and fruits add in a handful of nuts and flax seed...... I know it seems counter intuitive but it sounds like you are starving yourself and eating a low carb diet. If you eat correctly your body won't feel the need to store food , and if you carb up with things like carrots, sweet potatos and beans you will not feel tired.

Do u ever eat nut butters, Avocados, or other high fat Vegan foods? And if so, do u notice ur body fat go higher from this; or do u just notice ur body fat goes up from lack of exercise? Just curious as to the cause of the slightly higher body fat %. Thanks.

jajjajaja I laught a lot. But lets also be serious and take in count that body image is a big thing especially for women and specially for my age (20's-30's) I always had a lean body, maybe cos of veganism since 15 or just luck. But many people think is because I am vegan and they try to or go vegan just because of body image. It may not be the best reason, but in this case the intention worth less than the result, and is less animal being eat and abused. And afer a few month they realize is actually easy and they start to be more compacionate. (not the best a t english, sorry)

It's too bad that you have to choose between your health, your looks, the environment, and the animals. Oh wait! You don't! A vegan diet is good for all of those things! I have dropped a significant amount of weight since going vegan and my skin looks better, too. I think my dog even loves me more, because he just knows.

+Amy Mayo I've been vegan for one year (overall vegetarian for 8 years) and gained weight. And know what? I don't care. Well, I do care that I've gained weight again, but that's just my bad eating habits, and I've struggled with my weight for my entire life. I don't like it when people say veganism is better for your health. Veganism is just the absence of animal products, and you can either eat a healthy vegan diet or an unhealthy one. And guess what. i am actually eating a fairly healthy diet, but I just eat TOO MUCH. I don't buy into that health stuff, it's just about what you make our own diet and how disciplined you are losing weight. I am vegan for the animals and will always be, that's my number one reason, I will stand up for them till I die.

This was such a great video!!! So many laughs and giggles from it. I have been vegan for about 3.5 years but due to me consistently eating the same set of food over and over I had thyroid problems (foods I was eating lacked in vitamins and minerals my thyroid needed) and 80% of my blood related family has thyroid issues so it could be I need more vitamins and minerals for it because mine isn't very efficient with using them. Who knows but I found a natural way to get it back where it needs to be. However, I gained 20lbs in like a month this past summer. It was very hard for me to see a different person in the mirror in what felt like overnight. Its not like that would change me from being vegan nothing will. But I am vegan for multiple reasons. Health was 1st on my list when I started but once I learned the cold hard truth animals took 1st. Its been hard seeing myself in a different body and even though I have been slimming down slowly but surely some days it is hard. But seeing your video with showing that the extra weight I have put on is not defeating the goal I have of helping the animals makes me see it from a different perspective. Yes, I knew my weight doesn't affect them but thinking about my reasons of being vegan compared to my weight doesn't matter. Does that make sense?
