Cure for Alzheimer's? Ultrasound shows potential in clearing toxic brain plaques

94 ratings | 25556 views
Australian researchers have found that mice suffering from Alzheimer's performed much better in behaviour tests after receiving ultrasound treatment, a discovery that could give hope in the battle to find a cure for humans suffering from the degenerative illness. Neurotransmitter activities are disrupted in the brain of Alzheimer's patients. Beta amyloids, a natural protein, accumulated in a patient's brain, leading to the formation of plaques that can damage nerve cells. The cerebral cortex of Alzheimer's patients also shrink as symptoms progress. Scientists at the University of Queensland in Australia conducted a series of tests in which they injected a solution containing tiny gas bubbles in mice. Ultrasound treatment helps the gas bubbles to expand. The bubbles then temporarily open a gap in the blood-brain barrier, allowing the entrance of antibodies into the brain. The antibodies remove toxic beta amyloids thus reducing the size of plaques in the patient's brain. Researchers plan to carry out the same tests in larger animals such as sheep. Tests in humans will be more difficult because of the harder human skull, which ultrasonic waves cannot easily penetrate. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Why not create an ultrasound wave track for the patient to listen to with head phones for an hour or so per day that is oscillating sound around the entire brain. I have listened to meditation tapes that can move the sound (or sounds like it moves the sound) to different areas of the brain. If ultrasound can break up the particles or even create a pathway for the neurons to follow...perhaps it will help the effects for an 7 or 8 hour period after the tape is heard for that day...such that the patient plays it first thing in the morning. I think this is the best chance Altzheimers has for a cure. Sound waves are very powerful when used in a positive way. Perhaps even a layering of different sound waves would help to, in a sense, vigorously exercise the brain waves.

a harder skull should not impede the propagation of ultrasound energy. ultrasound travels very well through steel and ceramic media.

This won't work because amyloid plaques are from dead exploded neurons.  They need to cure the sick neurons if they want a cure.

I hope the cure will be effective!

No it most likely won't be. The Daily Mail has a new cure every week but it never is. This is in a very early stage and even if it is a cure it will take years before it's ready for human testing. So answer no this most likely isn't a cure. Source: mum works for wordl leading dementia research centre and hates that people every few weeks ask about the cure they read in the paper, desperate for anything. And she has to explain that even if the cure works, it won't be ready till way after their loved one dies.
