Why Don't Women Have Viagra?

1053 ratings | 72169 views
"Some argue that a female sexual-dysfunction drug is a matter of equality among the sexes. Others say it creates a medical problem where none exists. “Aren’t women’s sexual needs as important as erectile dysfunction in men?” To hear one side tell it, that’s the central issue in the debate over what’s known as “pink Viagra,” a sexual-dysfunction drug for women. Health organizations and the pharmaceutical industry say the absence of a female drug is a pressing problem that affects millions of relationships in the U.S. every year—and is the result of decades of inequality in scientific research. On the other hand, some researchers believe these groups, along with the drug industry, are creating a medical need where one doesn’t really exist, and that there isn’t a double standard at play in rejecting the latest female drug, flibanserin. As they see it, pink pill advocates are co-opting the language of equality, while drug marketers ignore the complexities of female sexual dysfunction, and how best to treat it." Ladies, ever heard of MDMA?

Viagra doesn't make you horny, it just makes you hard when you are aroused. If you take viagra but don't have a stimuli, you will not get hard. All viagra does is help make an erection hard. This is of no use to a woman.
lochinvar00465 (1 year ago)
Sexual disfunction between men and women is different. With men, it like.... hey it wont come up and I'm ready to go! With women it's more like, "well I could.......but I don't wanna".

So drugs that affect dopamine and serotonin levels are illegal & criminalized... yet women here get the privilege of taking these drugs under the veil of false, for-profit diagnoses. Ok.

Statistically people who take different pills for blood pressure die earlier than those with the same issues left untreated. Good that the doctors kill us with the best intention!

Viagra & Flibanserin are entirely different in composition, application & result. While Viagra only works on the males plumbing to cause their body to respond to desire, Flibanserin works on the females mind causing a drop in serotonin to diminish the barrier to desire. It's messing with the mind to cause a female to have a desire to respond sexually. It is being argued for women in general when it is only directed at women whom have a specific diagnosed disorder. It has nothing to do with feminism, sexism or anything of the sort. In fact it would be a detriment to the empowerment of females to make their own choices as this drug specifically acts upon the mind to change the choices the female would normally make. This is the ultimate date rape drug as you cannot get arrested for consensual sex & the female would have no reason to suspect that their drink had been spiked to diminish her ability to resist a sexual encounter she would have been unwilling to embark on.

Viagra can't be the kind of drug in its effects .Viagra is a drug that affects the physical male organ by repressing bloodflow retaining in the penis. where as a woman requires more then just a plumers fixit she requires the psycologists  homonal specialists let's just say for a woman it would require a variability of sciences to actually have a predictable effect on a womans desire amoungst many other factors the voice
kristabella222 (3 years ago)
I never gave it much thought, but Viagra just deals with the male sex organ and not the brain. But that doesn't matter much to men since they're always in the mood. Just dealing with a woman by increasing blood of lubrication to her vaginal area wouldn't be enough because most women aren't perpetually horny like men. Women need a horny drug. I'd be first in line to try it.
ignfan4life (3 years ago)
Actually, men have sexual arousal without desire all of the time. In fact, it's probably more common in men than women...
ignfan4life (3 years ago)
+manysharptongues That's unfortunate.
manysharptongues (3 years ago)
That's true. It caused a lot of strife in my relationship because when my boyfriend would have an erection but not want to have sex with me, I took it personally. But sex is mental and emotional for men, too, not just women. He was having a lot of really bad emotional stress, so even though he was physically aroused, he rarely had the desire for sex.
No more flowers, chocolates, champagne, warm evening walks, romantic songs on the radio while driving a camaro with her in the passenger seat... no more being confident, kind and manly... Just take the pill, bitch!
MrFantocan (3 years ago)
Answering the title: Because they got no penis! Still it is a good idea to have a drug to make girls in the mood, but that ALREADY EXISTS, it is called alcohol, but yeah the more the merrier. Now is there such a thing as girls who are completely not in the mood to have sex but want to be in the mood?

Erectile Dysfunction is a made up illness. Its a delicate cover for men who have married ugly women or the women got old and they are no longer attracted to them. I bet there is a market for a Viagra for women because there are alot of women who marry for money and not looks.
Nick Boyce (3 years ago)
My take on this is that it has a lot to do with sexist gender roles and misconceptions about genitalia. If a man has erectile dysfunction it is shameful and the mental factors are rarely (if ever) accounted for (it's seen and treated as a purely physical issue when sometimes it isn't) but when a women has sexual dysfunction the only way I've seen it portrayed in popular culture and the mainstream is that it is a challenge for men to see if they are good enough to please this woman with an inability to get off and rather than emphasizing the emotions of the female there is almost no focus on the females emotions except, commonly, to show boredom. TYT seems to see the world in a strange way regarding males and sex saying that "women are more complex" and that men just need to be hard to be attracted... Well, that isn't true because there are reasons other than sexual attraction for which most men get erections. I find it ridiculous that TYT overlooks how important emotions are in sex and sexual arousal for men and how pertinent mindset is.  TYT views sexual dysfunction in women as a purely emotional issue and dysfunction in men as a purely physical issue.
sameasalways74 (3 years ago)
The reason women do not have, or, I guess, did not have, a "Viagra," is because the hormone secretion involved in female arousal is far more complex and difficult to adjust than it is in males. As Chenk said, Viagra just has to address blood flow, not a slew of hormones that need balancing and regulation. It is not a sexist issue, its simply a biological barrier that takes time to overcome.

ANA, MY BODY IS READY!
Organic Jerk (3 years ago)
Laughing at the possibility of "complications" in men, whether it be about arousal, or depression, or masculinity, does not show maturity when talking about this.  I'm looking at you, Cenk.   Men's sexuality is really not that simple.  Just because there is a "thing" to look at, doesn't mean that the mind goes out the window.  Viagra and other drugs run blood to the organ.  That's all.  It doesn't control arousal. Thus, you can be "visually ready" on the drug and have no interest. I'm no MRA, by any means.  I just really think we need to acknowledge the level of complication humans in general consist of in terms of their arousal, or ANY emotion. TYT seems to get that "sexuality" is complicated (gender/sex/roles/etc), but when it comes to "men" and "sex", they sound like they're stuck in the 50's.
GrizzlysEye (3 years ago)
In 1971 there was a movie adressing this problem with drugs being pushed onto people. It was called "THX1138" starring Robert Duval. It's incredible that they saw this coming 44 years ago. Check it out!
Nicole Reeds (3 years ago)
I think that it would be great to have as an option. Many anti-depressants, anti-seizure medication and many others have the side effect of lowering libido. When you're on a combination of those, you can pretty much forget about sex. I weened myself off of my medication and decided to take migraines, depression, and chronic pain as it comes, (the side effects were too much- I'm too smart of a woman to feel constantly high and disoriented) and I'm stronger for it, but not everyone can just deal with it, and having options to counter side effects, even considerably minimal ones like lowered libido seems like the way to go.
bloodthirstyXsoul (3 years ago)
What about the women who have the desire mentally to have sex,but have trouble with the arousal part of it? You'd think they would try to create a drug that helps with more common problems like difficulty with lubrication, which is a common problem for women during and after menopause. But of course the first conclusion they jump to is that the biggest sexual issue/dysfunction women have is that they don't desire it enough...because of course womens' libidos pale in comparison to mens' across the board...
Joshua Lopez (3 years ago)
Women are more complicated, They are aroused mentally and psychologically, men physically.

"If you are in a marriage or in a relationship and have no sexual desire that could really destroy the relationship." Quick, question, have you heard of Asexuality? And (hopefully) most relationships or marriages aren't more based on sex and more on how much you trust your partner. I don't know a lot about marriage since I'm only 14, but a relationship based mainly towards sex doesn't sound like it would last long. Sorry if this doesn't make much sense, my thought process isn't always clear when I write it down or say it.
Amelyani Nemo (3 years ago)
Should also take note that just because one does not have the desire to have seed, doesn't mean that there is something wrong with them. There is asexuality. To many romantic asexuals, there are other means of expressing intendancy without sex. Perhaps instead of a pill that increases desire, maybe one that helps with actual sexual drive which is different from sexual desire. Then again I don't know the chemistry of it all. Just tired of the adoption that sex is always necessary in a romantic relationship.

*Cenk, you're a fucking idiot, and adhere to gynocintric beliefs. Having a hard-on doesn't mean the guy is in the mood for sex. I guess you've never had morning wood, or had a boner during a time you didn't want to have one. Seriously, do you even think before you make such idiotic statements?*
LoquaciousApe (3 years ago)
For men as well, psychological arousal is separate from physical arousal. Isn't underplaying the complexity of male sexuality part of the problem?

Viagra was invented by accident. Trust me if there was a real Female aphrodisiac we'd all know about it already. It would be the biggest news story ever.
Stephen Napoleon (3 years ago)
unstated Fact: "flying the flag" doesn't mean the guy wants to bone right then in there or at all. Erections happen during sleep and other states of unconsciousness and even while conscious.
DrSwov (3 years ago)
The amount of sexism in this story is just amazing... Men are definitely not as 'simple' as Cenk always makes them out to be. I don't believe for a second that he's never had an erection without the desire for sex. Unless he has the desire for sex 24/7... in which case that says a lot about him as a person, and not all men.
aikkuma1 (3 years ago)
Viagra is an inhibitor of an enzyme that happens to give erections, It wasnt even initially developed for erectile disfunction. The notion that sildenafil suddenly gives a guy the want to have sex is absurd and having a women viagra would be stupid as women arent going to see any results apart from low blood pressure from taking viagra.
xsixdouble5321x (3 years ago)
So this flibanserin sounds like mdma to me..... We will make the drugs legal but only if you get a prescription that lets you take them every day. but the majority of people taking these wouldn't even realize it was the same thing as molly and they will end up addicted to these pills

gernm18 (3 years ago)
Don't they all? Too many try to be men...
gb1701 (3 years ago)
Sorry Dr. Cenk, but erection does not always equal arousal or "ready to go". Just ask any man with morning wood or who's been called to the blackboard in his youth. Even when getting tired or actually sleeping an erection can occur due to simple autonomic means. Sexually arousal (or not) is in most cases a matter of the mind and men and women (and their dysfunctions) are more similar to each other those like Cenk, who what to continue gender stereotypes, think.

I don't think it was mentioned, but couldn't there be some connection made with these drugs as the 'date rape - lite' option? Not at an age where I have a need for Viagra, but I have meds for the brain chemistry side of things, and I'd heavily agree that that's something you want to be REALLY careful with. One of the more interesting TYT videos, plus one for the questions raised.

Did Cenk just really make an argument, that a hard penis only occurs when a man is ready for sex? It is so embarassing to watch a man spew such misinformation about his own biology -.- Does he have any idea how often a penis erects without the man necessarily being in the mood for sex? This again paints a picture of "men think with their dicks and once that thing is up they will jump on anything that moves". Just embarassing, Cenk!

Both drugs work on the brain. The womens drug may affect the brain in a larger way, but but the brain is also responsible for controlling the blood flow throughout the body, so the mens drug is also working on the brain.

Female sexual-dysfunction not drugs available: "OMG, men have these drugs so why don't women? That's sexist!" Female sexual-dysfunction drugs available: "OMG, it's a conspiracy by pharmaceutical companies to misdiagnose women and push drugs they don't need to make a profit! That's sexist!"
C Rack (3 years ago)
Viagra is a fix for a mechanical dysfunction barrier to sex. Sexual desire for sex for either gender is another story and there is an easy fix for either of them. The inequality (ie "sexism) idea is actually backwards because women already had a fix to their equivalent mechanical barrier. It's called lube. Viagra is equality, not inequality.
Louis Cypher (3 years ago)
This blanket assumption that women are SO MUCH MORE complicated than men is annoying. Of course there are differences between the genders, that is the nature of a sexually dimorphic species like homo sapiens, but to gloss over so many factors that lead into something as complicated as a sexual interaction smacks of intellectual vapidity. To be fair, I think the greatest perpetrators of this oversimplification is men themselves, because this offers an out in so many situations, both personally and from a societal point of view. It is a type of social indoctrination for men to "dumb" themselves down emotionally, because "they" say a "man" doesn't worry about such things. Thus the trope of men being sex addled, hormonally blinded mongoloids is validated in the eyes of young males who act this out until a "good woman" can set him straight. Of course there are outliers, whores are common in both genders, but brains are born complex, minds learn to be simple.

this is the problem with the world. if someone is asexual then they must have a disorder because everyone wants sex.... if someone just isn't in the mood... oh they must have a disorder because everyone wants sex all the time.... the way I see it a drug that makes you want to have sex by taking it every day so it messes with your brain chemistry until you are craving sex is no diffrent to date rape drugs and I'm sure it won't be long before someone end up using it that way. granted I can see how it could help a lot of people with relationship issues, especially those who are in relationships with asexual people, but personally I'm not to sure about it especailly given how a lot of doctors hand out pills like they were handing out sweets on halloween.

Sir Amic Varze (3 years ago)
It'd be nice for women to have a female equivalent of viagra, but this question misses the entire point! The whole reason it doesn't exist is because the problem is harder to solve. It's similar to how there is no male birth control.. it's because the situation in that regard is far more complicated, so it's gonna take some time.
sydandtaytum (3 years ago)
i dont like that ana comes at the idea of a female viagra so strongly from the point of view of "well, women physicially just dont want to have sex the way men do"--- i think that is assuming a lot. women need/want to orgasm jsut as much as men do. problem is they dont always orgasm during sex. if a drug can make a woman orgasm or orgasm faster during intercourse, then why not? i think a lot of women arent as interested in sex because they do not orgasm every time. some women never orgasm during intercourse. i think a recent poll said that during sex, women orgasm about half the time while men orgasm about 80-90% of the time.
As you all know, men never get sexual arousal without sexual desire, for men it's hand in hand, but women, who are so unlike men they are almost an alien species, have a disconnect between sexual desire and sexual arousal so coming up with a drug that causes sexual arousal in women without causing sexual deisre is a bad thing, where with men, who again, ALWAYS WANT SEX, you just need to cause sexual arousal. Fuck you both you sexism misandrists.
WeeItsNookies (3 years ago)
At this point some of the things you see feminists crying "sexism" over is sending the huge message they are envious and jealous of men. At this point in time "Feminism" is ironically obsessed with imitating men. Whatever a man does, the feminist wants to do too. Feminists suffer from a massive case of penis envy: economically, culturally, and politically. They idealize and romanticize the exploitative power of elite men, while ignoring poor and working class men. But feminists still need men to build, repair, and deliver everything. Feminists are too LAZY to build their own society and will always rely on men for their standard of living.

A lack of sexual desire on the part of men is solved with chemical treatment - testosterone, either injected or in a gel. Viagra solves the problem of erectile dysfunction due to insufficient blood flow, mostly due to ageing, not desire. The female equivalent would be an over the counter lubricant. Honestly, the TYT hosts seem to have a lot of trouble with proportionality.
Natase (3 years ago)
Viagra was accidentally discovered. Not intentional
Autistic Geek (3 years ago)
Actually it's more similar than people commonly think. Yes a man needs to be in the mood too. The way our society has been brought up is that men should always be ready. This is false. Biologically it is virtually the same. Blood pressure gets high and flows to the genital area. It is a societal problem. the drug should exist.
RG whatup (3 years ago)
Racism, Sexist, unrelated admiration and Republicans... GO AWAY. Now back to the actual report. It been a huge problem to the many develop countries including the US of A that their society are becoming much more dependent on drugs and its becoming harder to not see how much power the pharmaceutical companies have in politics and local communities. ..As times goes on, drugs that we take today will equal in importance like Oil in the Future. I also think that the "Pink Viagra or Viagra for Women" fixes or tries to fixes a very huge problem that US of A faces today which the high amount of failed marriages, divorces and problem induced relationships. Yes, SEX may not be the very top thing you should be worried about in a relationship but we are still animals and SEX is still on the tip lists.

Men have some sexual complexity too, you can have random erections (being erect without the urge for sexual interaction), you can have an erection, want to have sex, but can't ejaculate. Yes this is usually do to stimulants or opiates/dissociatives, but it still deals with shit in the brain just like the women's sexuality thing, and can happen to people who aren't druggies like me. There's times where I don't even get turned on by shit. I remember this stupid fucking statistic that "MEN THINK ABOUT SEX EVERY 2 SECONDS"... Don't flatter yourself bitches.

It's not interesting Ana, it's fucking stupid and should instantly be dismissed due to the stupidity of it. Viagra doesn't increase libido. It allows better blood circulation so you can get a hardon.
