Nice, but it seems that you are just re-using 1/3 of your old soil, meaning that next year you have 3 times as much depleted soil? Doing it this way don't you end up with a big pile of soil that just gets bigger and bigger?
Thank you for the info. I am new to gardening and had a poor crop this year, now that I watched you Potato vids and your dirt reclamation, I will be in much better shape for next year. Bless you both and take care. Will be keeping an eye on this channel.
Hollis & Nancy I love your videos- I live in Brisbane Australia & you have helped me so much with my little backyard homestead as well. Thank you so much. It is winter here at the moment but still growing well as we are sub-tropical 17th July 2018.
The tubs he is using ate called muck baskets. In days gone by they were actually baskets used to clean horses stalls.. Which is mucking out. The terms prob more common on the race track. You can purchase heavy duty versions at places like Tractor Supply , Rural King or whatever Farm and home store is in your area. I use them every day. One more bit of info. There is a cart made esp to haul them around.. Made so they won't fall off.
Oh Boy was I off. I was not even doing the old to the new at 50% and no way did I use that much cow manure or Blood meal or bone meal. the latter I never used and the blood meal only 1/2 of what you used. Thanks so much
I used an old medium sized kids pool and dumped all my container soil in it. I also put in peat moss, manure, 10-10-10- fertilizer worm castings and home made compost and mixed it up with a shovel. Man that's the best container soil I've ever had!
I just keep the soil in the pots over the winter and in April dump them all in the old kids pool and add all the amendments that I mentioned above. You can add whatever you want as well. This was a huge success and I will continue to do it in the years to come. The Tomatoes that I grew in them were the best container plants I ever grew. I think adding the peat moss was great because it helps a little to contain the moisture. It will certainly revive the old soil.
Hello Hollis and Nancy, for the last few years I have not been able to produce a full tomato because of blossom end rot. What am I doing wrong? I use name brand potting mix in my 5 gal. containers. Please help me!!! Thanks!
I got inspired by your video and it was a nice day out so I amended the soil on all my outside containers , the problem is that it's too early to transplant my seedlings here in NJ, do you think it's Ok to cover them with plastic until I transplant my seedlings? don't want the rain to wash off all the good stuff before the plants get to it.
Hollis & Nancy's Homestead I hear u. I'm only three years into gardening I use large containers. To be honest I don't do a great job at identifying deseases that are unpardonable soil born. Been saving most soil and adding to. Not Ideal but potting mix is expensive.
Came back to this video to get ready for spring planting. I've noticed some homesteaders on YouTube also like to use Azomite. Is that too much on top of what you've already added?
I do mostly container gardening to avoid trampling by the dogs. Now we have a few rodents in the neighborhood, and will have to do something to protect plants from them, too. The So. Cal sun burned most of my veggies last summer, so will try mulch and shade cloth this time. Still learning and trying to get it right.
Thank you for sharing what you've learned! God bless you!
I would like to know how to add zinc to my soil. All I can find is by using used coffee grounds. This would also add acid, I don't believe I need the acid. Could I grind up a zinc tablet & add that to the soil? Also I need to say that we can ONLY grow using pots, we have Way to many trees in our yard (1/2 a block) to plant in the ground. Also I would like to know how to "grow" earth worms & collect the rich stuff. Maybe you have one of your Great videos on that.
What do you think of using finely ground egg shells? I have been using these along with my bone meal & if it is going to be an inside potted plant I only use the egg shells as the bone meal Really smells Bad. I also have used Espen Salts, what is your opinion?
I really like your potato grow videos, they will be a big help. Our potatoes didn't turn out to well last year. The reclaim the soil well helpful too. I used bone meal but not the lime & blood meal. I will be adding these this year. Thanks!
Ranchers feed their cattle with a feed that comes in a heavy duty plastic container. It is as big or bigger that the buckets that Hollis & Nancy used. You might be able to find some of those. We use them for tomatoes & other garden vegs.
Wish you would package your additives with recipe amount of how much soil to your good blend! I have such a small need as I’m going to have such a little area to need it. The wheel barrow was probably all I need. 🤗🙏👩🌾
Thanks so much for the prompt reply, Sir. I generally grow my plants (for kitchen garden) in a net house. Here in tropical lands, we need net houses because it's mostly hot and often very rainy. So plastic roofing and net walls all around. My basil get partial sun - in the mornings and a bit in the afternoons. I love these plants in my kitchen but they always look so fragile and lean. I heard they need pruning? I've never done it. Don't know how to. Thanks for your attention again. I am watching your tomato cages just now. Superb.
HI HOLLIS AND NANCY! Starting up the indoor winter garden already--- too cold outside, and feeling like early winter in the mornings and mid-afternoons... hope you both had a better growing season than we did in Muskoka! All the best to you!!
+ELAINE'S GARDENING AND C0OKING CHANNEL
Had a very wet and cool spring. It straightened out in the summer. Having some rough weather again right now from all the storms down south breaking up and drifting over us but should be over soon. Best of luck to you with your indoor gardening ❤️
Thank you so much for your kind words of compassion. I am so sorry for your loss too. I know the pain is terrible for you. Grieving the loss of your grand child is bad but watching your child grieve the loss of their child is even worse. Grand parents grieve twice. May God comfort and heal your broken heart during your season of grief and give you the strength to help your child recover from the loss of their child💔
I have seen all your videos and never really asked anything but I was wondering how much money you really save by doing all this work to reclaim the old soil?looks like you have to spend more to reclaim it.but idk.love your videos and I always give you a thumbs up
Thanks for watching!! There is an initial investment to get set up. After that there is a tremendous savings on potting soil. Before I reclaimed my soil I bought 3 pallets of soil for the year. Now I don't buy any potting soil. I still buy Black Kow and Peat but most of my cost was potting soil.
The reclamation box will fill completely up by the end of the growing season. To do the entire box at once the box would have to be 66% larger and to blend the peat and Black Kow would be back breaking. Using a 6 cu ft wheelbarrow makes the job manageable. When I run out, I return to the reclamation box and fill the wheelbarrow 1/3 full and mix up another batch 👍👍
just wanted to let you know that i really enjoy your videos they are extremely informational and educating. I built a trellis for my cucumbers this and beans this year. they seem to be doing wonderful thanks
I cannot find words good enough to tell you how much I enjoy y'all's videos. I'm kinda disabled, need knee surgeries, got 2 injured rotator cuffs, and hate politics. So, to ease mimd & soul, I'm working on smallish container garden. You inspire me. 💞to you both!
Hey Hollis and Nancy,
At the end of your videos, we can see pictures of your garden where you did grow corn... However, in all your new plans and videos, it seems that you do not grow corn anymore. Is there a particular reason why is it so? I'm just curious !
+Paul Y Lliazag
Oh yes, we grow corn. I only grow it every two or three years. We grow the Silver Queen variety. I am planning to do a video series on Silver Queen when we get set up at our new homestead 🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽
What if you put landscape fabric on the ground? It seems like a lot of money to spend on the box. I was thinking maybe making a bottomless wooden box to put my used soil in and my finished compost to keep until next spring.
I made the reclamation box so I can control moisture, grass/weed encroachment, insects and ants. If I leave it on the ground it turns into a pile of mud, bugs and weeds. This method has been very efficient for me. I especially like that the soil does not come in contact with the ground. 👍👍👍.
Thank you so much for watching our videos!! Welcome to the family ❤️❤️🐶
Really, really enjoy the videos. My dad recently retired after 46 years in the oil and gas industry, he has zero hobbies. In an effort to try and find something for him to do I began gardening. It's enriched both of our lives tremendously, he really enjoys doing it. Outside of the grandchildren it gives him an excuse to come into town to visit. We both enjoy you're channel, I've personally learned quite a bit. Many, many thanks.
That is so awesome!! The garden is a great place for grandfathers and grandkids to build precious memories together. I'm glad y'all like our channel and that it has helped you. Peace to you both❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much! We recently got a bunch of new video equipment we have. Even saving up for for the last year. We are learning how to use it little by little. We are trying very hard to improve the quality of our videos. Thank you for your kind words of encouragement!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Hi Hollis and Nancy.
Just found and subscribed to your channel, loved the one you did on Bok Choi and will definitely help me improve my production, thank you.
Can I suggest that you look around for a cement mixer that you can use to do your soil mixing ? I mixed like you do now but once I found a cement mixer going real cheap I jumped at it and it has lifted a huge burden from my workload, and all my mixes are blended perfectly.
Thank you for your videos, and have a blessed day too.
Hi there, I live in New York (subtropic weather varying climate) and I'm both building/growing in a lined cedar raised garden bed (2.5W x 2'D x 16'L) for the first time but am having great difficulty deciding how to best fill it, Opinions vary its a bit confusing. I have considered using bags of "raised bed soils" but I then read disaster reviews lol and I really want my vegetables to be successful given the expense of this project could you please advise? Thanks :)
You are very welcome.
I have no specific recommendation for the dry peat. It is readily available at LOWES and fairly cheap. For the compost, call your city composting facility. They sell it and deliver it. The compost facility in my city of Newport News. Virginia sells it for 25 bucks/yard. It has a Ph of 6.0. For the cow manure I do recommend Black Kow. I have used this product for decades. I like it because it has been aged and ready to use without burning my plants. I have had no problem with weed seeds in the product at all. It has a nutritional value of .5-.5-.5. I recommend blending these 3 components together thoroughly and filling your raised bed
