How Singapore Fixed Its Housing Problem

Оценок: 22447 | Просмотров: 919977
Singapore had a severe housing shortage decades ago. But it developed one of the world's best public housing programs, which has also allowed a huge number of its citizens to buy their own homes. Video by Vicky Feng, Robin Fall and Christian Capestany, with assistance of Melissa Cheok

An "unexplainable" fire destroyed everyone's living quarters, convincing everyone to move into the gov's new homes. Hmmm, suspicious...

When I visited Singapore, my uber driver proudly told me that their government had enough savings to live through five(5!!) recessions. Probably one of the smartest most people-focused governments out there. We could all learn from Singapore. 👏👏

Singapore is an authoritarian state. There is no actual democracy in there. The rule of law is machiavellian.
Dave A. Richards (13 дней назад)
An "unexplained fire", I guess they needed a nudge huh? Ot must be terrible having to face expensive housing costs but I imagine a nation that you cannot even truly find in an atlas, that you can lap in an hour has much real estate for much of it population to invest in. I'm pretty sure that for anything to be built you have to tear something down. For one person to get a backyard, you may have to take down one of those towers, I guess your willing to provide standing space in your new backyard for the former tenants. I'm pretty sure it sucks to be restricted to your four government walls but I could point you to the many who wish they could share your inconvenience

About fire. I'm from BR and I can assure that fire can be pretty normal in slums(SP city has a lot of history with this). So please understand, everyone that think that this level of social control(it's basically irrelevant) can be dangerous to the nation clearly don't know nothing about life. Singapore deserves the peace nobel by but their citizens in first place!

this is one of the best propaganda vids you will find... Singapore's public housing isn't cheap and the "homes" are leasehold, for all you know, that "squater fire" was started by the gov to move them... conspiratorial perhaps, but with a dictatorship, "amazing" things can happen, fyi, the cpf was actually started by the british and is now a matter of serious contention with the gov constantly refusing to honor their promise to return the savings at 55years old. News of singapore is usually propaganda and its a very pretty picture on the surface... until you actually talk to a native singaporean, there's a reason why it has one of the most unhappy people and also one of the costliest cities... (a gov hdb recently was sold for $1000,000.00 or more) Don't believe all you see in vids

It’s not true that you need to wait for 7 years after application to get the keys to your HDB flat. It’s true in the case of SERS (selective enbloc redevelopment scheme). Nowadays it’s probably a 2-3 years wait or even shorter. This is a fairly accurate account of the public housing sector in Singapore.
J.Young (27 дней назад)
Now if New York could get this right...
Rebekah W (28 дней назад)
... it's also jam-packed.. and rather small. you can't have too many people live at one place - if your family lives in the latest ones built it may be a tight squeeze.. and there's not a lot of place to exercise in the home.. + you have to wait several years first.... and now with it being such a 'rich' country - no one wants to have to wait for a house because everyone may look down on you. a whole different mindset there..

tocrob (27 дней назад)
The HDB median is ~$80.00 annually. For most people, it's ~$0.00 . The average annual maintenance fee is ~$350.00 per HDB flat.

The video didn't mention the most important clause of public housing in Singapore. You need to get MARRIED FIRST in order to qualify for Public Housing. In addition, Singaporeans don't own the house/flats. They are purchased on a 99-year lease which means that after 99 years, the family and their descendants have to vacate from the premises without any compensation. Finally, there are NO public housing that has swimming pool facility for it. All public swimming pools are accessible by any member of the public after paying a fee regardless if they stay near the public swimming pools or not. The video also didn't go indepth on the pricing of the flats and the average income. A public "4-room" flat (3 bedrooms , 1 living room) cost approx. $300,000 - $500,000 depending on the location of the flat. A condo cost about $1,100,000 - $1,600,000 for the similar sized flat. The average salary for fresh graduates is about $3,000 - $5,000 and combined salary can be from $5,000 to $12,000. Average Singaporean takes about 25 years to pay off their housing loan, which serves as a 'burden' for them from ever investing that money in elsewhere. If they decide to use their CPF to pay for the home, when they sell it in the future, they have to return the money together with the accrued interest of CPF (i.e. interest earn if the money was in CPF untouched) back to CPF. This is why many Singaporeans are complaining because CPF money is afterall their own money and yet they have to pay that money back instead of using it to purchase a 2nd flat/property after selling their first home.

This explains how demand from foreign money is kept out of the housing market. This idea is genius.
Conrad Gifford (30 дней назад)
Reason why pubic housing hasn’t had crime is because they don’t have poverty. Singapore has a solid economy going and when you have people employed you have people working for a living rather than stealing for a living. Remains to be seen if the gov will allow the private sector to be more independent and less reliance on socialism.

Of course American media would get incensed over social control despite the fact that such a policy is necessary given Singapore’s history of volatile racial tensions.

If you let the government pay to build high quality high rise Apartments that are well maintained AND force the 99% to live in them. It can work. Just as Ford once said, You can have any color of motor vehicle you want as long as it is black.

social control works in singapore because it's a small country. the government can afford to house people and fix stuff because they don't have hundreds of millions of people in their country, therefore, being more authoritarian is the more pragmatic approach. government intervention usually fails because it is unsustainable financially, resulting in poor quality products which cost a lot of money, which is why it works well in singapore but will utterly fall flat on it's face if it's ever tried in places like the USA, not to mention the cultural differences of how asians are typically more ok with the idea of collectivism vs individualism.

I'm sorry but this is just ridiculous and I have so much to say as a born and raised Singaporean. Firstly, we don't own the houses. We lease them for 99 years. Houses cost at least 6 digit figures. In most parts of the world, u could get a big house with a lovely backyard with that kind of money. Now there's this new law where we aren't even allowed to smoke in our own houses and officers can storm into our houses without a warrent to "enforce this law". So, please. Essentially we rent these houses for a ridiculous price then can't do nuts in there. Secondly, the cost of living is so high that many middle-class people live paycheck to paycheck. Visit a MacDonalds or a food centre take a look around and see how many elderly, who are weak and frail, are serving and cleaning tables. Notice how many of our pioneers are gathering empty soda cans or selling tissue packets to try and earn a little money to just get by. Singapore thrives on tourism, so for the many comments that say that we are a great place to visit? Well of course! Sure, I'll give it to Singapore that we are a safe country and a clean one too. So many laws that a flick of a cigerette bud could cost you an immediate $300 fine. Almost half of the country wants to migrate -including myself. An incompetent, complete joke of a government where when faced with the question as to why Singaporeans don't have more babies that was answered with "the high cost of living", one of our dear ministers stated how "you don't need much space to conceive a baby". Ministers are so disgustingly overpaid. Prices continue to increase whilst everything is failing. Our trains, the main commute for most of us, are constantly breaking down but yet they are charging higher fares. Water and electricity bills increasing by 30% and our tax is being raised too. And hey, while we're at it; I would also like to sprinkle in the factor of silent racism and discrimination. Oh and the lack of freedom and how LGBTQ+ is still illegal and frowned upon like some backward ass society. I could go on and on but I'm sure y'all get the point. I will admit that the country is safe compared to America or others. Sure, we have a roof over our heads but at what price? Staying forever in debt to the government? And homelessness is still a thing here, fyi. Singaporeans are famous for complaining but you know. I digress.
derek khor (2 дня назад)
Zen Zann do your part in working within singapore and save to clear you debts. Either that or move out. Im not being rude. If you want to live in singapore, this is the lifestyle you will have to succumb to. Well unless there happens to be some big uproar that changes how singapore works.
Zen Zann (2 дня назад)
+derek khor you're right, I do have a roof OVER my head. A gigantic debt filled roof which I'm leasing out - not even owning aye.

MesRevesEnRose (11 дней назад)
I guess no where is perfect. 😂 I also noticed the people of Singapore work very hard but they seem to have a sense that it's worth it. About the housing, in other developped countries, properties are bought, stay empty and resold by foreign investors. Our property markets make no sense and benefits only the rich investors forever.
ReasonableRadio (1 месяц назад)

lots of uneducated comments in here. the government built housing is using funds from people that already paid into. the prices of the government housing is only 20-30% cheaper than market price and you ARE NOT a homeowner, you are leasing for life. Nothing to call your own, nothing to save up for and pass to your children. Communist thinking has really destroyed this world. Just look at the comment section, everybody begging for the government to solve their problems. Little do they know Singapore is a global beacon of capitalism and uses it to attract investments and companies to an otherwise island in the middle of nowhere.
