I have been type 1 for 33 years, have an 3 month average blood sugar of 127. I travel for my job 95% of the year and eat out every meal. It is all about choices and moderation and mixed with walking and light exercise. My weight is good my doctors(retired two at the place I go to) have all thought I was a bit thin for my height 6 foot and about 180 lbs. Couple of great things I appreciate: long acting insulin(balance), continuous glucose monitor(trends), insulin pens(easy to travel).

I totally understand you, Sam. ☺ To see the way we live daily is viewed as "gloomy". Truth is....it is. People think we get easily drunk, are lazy, like to "eat" abruptly , helpless, negative. We just view our beginning of each day as "a job" we didn't apply for. We gotta do, but we need more plans (as Sam said) to take place. Serious, yet comfortable is what we have to be. It is a hectic way to live. Sadly. We just make it interesting & worthy to teach others to be grateful for the small things in life taken for granted.....Thanks Sam.

HI I'm a type 1 diabetic and I've struggled for 13 years with it and have ended up in hospital with DKA many times and I've experienced the same reactions off the nhs staff they assume I've been drinking alcohol and I've felt like I've been told off by them for not managing my diabetes properly when really it's very difficult I hypo almost daily if not then the day after I can honestly say I've never dun a full week with out having a hypo so now I'm feeling the complications from this and I'm in so much pain all the time in my legs and feet with diabetic neuropathy and restless legs syndrome and depression and anxiety about going places and having a hypo life really sucks and the dwp dnt care and say I'm fit and carnt claim disability when it is a disability for me now at this level just because others arnt the same doesn't mean I'm not it's really difficult
ShintyShinto (3 месяца назад)
Type 1 for a month now. I was diagnosed through DKA and had to spend 3 days and 3 nights in hospital to recover. At first I was blood testing 6 times a day but now that I'm getting my freestyle libre I'm only really pricking once a day in the morning (unless I feel ill, which I did due to food poisoning recently, tested 6 times in an hour lol). As for insulin injections, I do 4 a day and I used to suck at it, taking like 20 mins to do a single shot. Now it takes 2 mins tops. I've also gained back the stone of weight that I lost from DKA. Things are looking up, blood sugars are healthy, averaging 6-7 mmol/L. Ketones finally at 0.0!! :) And I'm getting the freestyle libre :D

Ive had type 1 diabetes sense i was 7 years old im now 14 years old and it does get annoying when people ask stupid questions
Philip Cork (10 месяцев назад)
Thanks for sharing your story. You are an inspiration to other young T1D going through the same incredible journey. Yes teachers are sometimes hopelessly arrogant and ill educated. I've always told everyone around me that I'm diabetic so I stay safe; probably annoying but I just have to do it. I'm also a T1D but I use an insulin pump that is far safer than injections. When I exercise I check my pump to see what insulin I have on board, adjust if necessary, then reduce the background insulin at least 1/2h before starting to stay stable while exercising. Takes time (weeks for me) to get it right but now I can cycle 100 miles a day or walk 20 miles a day across 400 miles of southern Californian desert without problems. But the night following exercise I need to reduce the background insulin, in my case to 85% the first night then 95% the second night. If you are not aware of the increased insulin sensitivity following exercise, find out quickly by checking overnight and stay safe. Don't be put off exercising. There is a lot of learning out there for us diabetics. Groups in the US/Europe are working together to self-build artificial pancreas systems (APS) that adjusts the background insulin to keep you on track. Worth looking at, in my opinion and can be found at #WeAreNotWaiting, #OpenAPS, @DanaMLewis and her inspirational talks on youtube e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_J47aqiTrtc hope this helps even if you are not into building an APS

Relax! - This is the End of all Diabetes Fears, for the Demise of the Diabetes already is a fact - Diabetes (any type of) and any other diseases can be wiped out in less than a month - Everybody will become Infinitely Healthy and by that even Immortal - By doing my discovery (just an exercise for a minute a day) - My WVCD - The Weapon of Virus and Cancer Destruction, that cures and prevents any diseases, known on Earth, even Aging, for every cell of our bodies is shielded 100% from any external/internal (genetic) detrimental impact - My blood sugar level is 300 mg/dL (normally a killing level), but I am not sick of Diabetes, for I cannot get sick of it, or of any other diseases - I will describe my WVCD to everyone, who sends me an e-check for one million US Dollars (money can be negotiated) - Doing my discovery for just a minute a day, everybody will stay absolutely healthy all the time, living their Endless Lives, for Infinite Health = Immortality.

I do a decent job of managing my diabetes but my life can be pretty disorganized and it's hard to manage around my friends and coworkers sometimes. I never minded the shots and pricks so much but the worst part is the constant worry and feeling like I can't have freedom and peace of mind like everyone else around me. I understand it's a lifelong disease and that I need to see the positives and embrace it but I've had the disease for 10 years now and I just feel down sometimes that I can't always be there for my friends and loved ones. Also feel like the disease forces me to live a somewhat limited lifestyle and they probably don't really understand why

I am type1 diabetic since 15 years of age (now 43 years old)and inject insulin 5 times per day and highly fluctuating blood sugar and neuropathy, leg cramps and sweating a lot (Change clothes should always be accompanied by the bag) ... etc. You took the words of my mouth! Type 1 diabetics can very easily get angry. It can often take advantage of! Many of such people and office workers who do not know anything about diabetes ! Internet is often false information about type 1 diabetes and type 1 diabetics direction! It happened to me the same story; I did not take any alcohol and an ambulance car doctors took me to the  disillusionment house !   I was a month suffer too severe pain in bed, and my blood sugar had been for a month 38 - 42mmol/L . My throat and respiratory tract were busy drying of acid poisoning! The doctor said that; All the internal organs have been carried out and must be cut ... etc. ! Doctors and nurses and endocrinologist remind me again for many years after  to point out that my condition would not live in no man behind! All the doctors were amazed many years in my case ! I was 1.5- 2 hours under the infusions and when two Doctors came to check on my condition, it was not my internal organs no longer something wrong! Doctors were surprised very many years that I stayed to live ! I was half an hour in disillusionment-house dying , before when I was delivered to the hospital! I live in Estonia, city: Tallinn . I use Google translate help !

Hi... I have a very important question....my boyfriend was diagnosed with type 1 when he was 10 years old....his blood sugars was never fully controlled and were most often really hight. when he was about 19 he developed constant feelings of nausea that for the past 14 years have never gone away and often are so unbearable it makes his life hell.....he was checked for Gastroparesis but tests came back negative...he what then check for Rumination Syndrome and constantly checked for ketosis the doctors could not find anything...my question is...have you ever had constant never ending nausea or know of anyone that has? if so please message back. all the best xx
Practical Recommendation (1 год назад)
I have often had a runny nose and a long time! But I have a dust allergy! Runny nose can also be a constant, high acid levels in the blood and the mucous membranes caused by the drying process and may be caused by the dusty environment ... may have different effects with the result and so on. ,

Great educational vid Sam. In 2005 I was diagnosed as type II. About a month ago I graduated to type I. Its genetic and very progressive in my family. My mom was type I and on dialysis for 8 yrs before she passed not long ago. My brother who is 50 is severe as well, Might lose a foot due to an infection. Im 45 now and I manage the best I can. I don't party (anymore lol), Dont eat bad food and it just goes crazy. Last week, sugar dropped to 25, If my wife wasn't home at the time. I would never have made it into he house from the yard. I literally crawled to the house. Anyway. Best of luck in your battle. Be well.

Hey guys, I'm a type 1 diabetic in America. It seems you guys in Europe us a different number system for your blood glucose monitors.Over here a number around 100-120 is pretty much perfect. But on your monitors I see numbers like 7.6 or 11. Just curious what is considered good over there and bad. Thanks guys. P.S. No one has to answer that if they feel uncomfortable.
Why.Not? (3 года назад)
Thanks for answering Lemonz. I kind of figured afterwards it was a metric vs. US (imperial) measurement systems.
Lemonz1989 (3 года назад)
You guys in the US use the number in mg/dL (milligrams per deciliter) while most of the world, including us in Europe, use mmol/L (millimoles per liter) for our regular tests. The reference range for blood glucose is 80 to 120 mg/dL while it is 4.4 to 6.6 mmol/L before meals. :)

stephen maud (4 года назад)
A nice guy and I empathise with him, but I think this is all a bit negative and just looking at all the hassle of it when actually it's not all bad when it becomes part of the routine, speaking as an experienced diabetic.
TerminallyUnique95 (6 месяцев назад)
Yeah it's not that bad for a year or two. I'm type 1, and you get sick of the routine fast. It's limiting too. I have tried to be strong and continue my activities I love such as hiking. Yet it's very difficult as things can go downhill fast. The truth is, this is a chronic illness that's never going to be easy to deal with. We just have to make the best of it somehow.

Your Boyfriend should have something called a Hypo-Kit somewhere in the fridge. If not, he should get one. This is a Glucagon powder and a syringe with injection fluid. Inject the fluid into the bottle with the powder, shake a couple of times, fill the syringe and inject into a muscle (thigh, upper arm). If he does not come out of it in 10 minutes, call an ambulance and tell them precisely what you've done.

levelchaser (5 лет назад)
Ignorance. Target blood glucose levels can vary between person to person. Mine was 150 when I was younger, now it's 120. If his was 150 and he had just eaten something sweet it's normal for it to be a little high, because the insulin can take 1-3+ hours to fully take effect.

I have been a diabetic since my 7th birthday, I am insulin dependent, im not on the pump.Diabetes will affect your life, But not that you have to eat like a rabbit and not do what you want to do.You are still a normal person if you get it, its just That you have to take some insulin if you want to eat a little bit of a snack/Meal/Treat.My mum diddnt want me to have the pump because if it went off and stopped working, you only have half an hour to get to the hospital. Thats what i think, :)

fred hutch cancer, the mayo clinic are telling all patients to go on a raw-vegan diet to heal...if THEY are endorsing it, there must be some truth in healing...but even THEY say you must believe that healing is possible... look up the book biology of belief by dr bruce lipton.. they knew the answer back in the 1950s and were told to keep it quiet... have an amazing day... i'm now down to 9 units a day from 70 per day... :) my reports don't lie...
Rob K (5 лет назад)
of those 500 individuals that have reversed diabetes... not one has been called a cure by the AMA... Cures are a disaster in the medical community... just like the word REMISSION in regards to cancer, the AMA will never call a person cured even though they no longer have cancer in there bodies...
Rob K (5 лет назад)
my doctors reports do not lie... my C-peptide for the first 47 years of my life was a big O.... today, my C-peptide show (for the first time) that i am producing insulin... i'm sorry that your DIABETIC IDENTITY will not allow you to believe that it is possible to heal... today there are over 500 T1 diabetics that have gotten off of insulin... that is fact... what i have done takes commitment and i was ready to make the changes necessary... you don't need to be abusive...i wish you every success
Rob K (5 лет назад)
remind you uneducated teacher about the Americans with Disabilities ACT of 1992... is states very clearly that diabetes is a disability... and it is a form of DISABILITY DISCRIMINATION to deny you the tools (food insulin etc) that you need to maintain your health...then talk to the principals office about your rights or have your parents do it for you...
Rob K (5 лет назад)
i carry dates in a ziplock bag... btw it is illegal for an employer, a school, to discriminate on basis of disability... and telling you that you cannot use your insulin, sugar or anything else that you need to control that disability is a form of discrimination... i know... i sued for DISCRIMINATION OF BASIS OF DISABILITY AS DEFINED BY THE ADA OF 1992... I WON MY CASE... STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS AND FILE A COMPLAINT WITH THE SCHOOL BOARD... BEST OF LUCK TO YOU...
Rob K (5 лет назад)
our bodies are responding to a poor environment... change the environment and heal... look at dr bruce lipton "biology of belief" on youtube.. i am reversing my 47 years of T1 diabetes... my body is finally producing insulin on its own... yes it is possible to heal...ask my doctors to see all the test results... they are baffled... the change i made was going on a100% RAW-VEGAN diet....my gastroparesis was gone the first week... and now i finally see an end to a lifetime of diabetes.. :)

i agree that there is always something worse that we could experience... i watched my mother die of melanoma... cancer takes lives (sometimes very quickly) but always painfully... we are fortunate as diabetics because we have choices... it is possible to heal...yes heal... your doctor will never tell you about it... but i am reversing my 47 years of T1 diabetes ... thank you for your insightful comment... big HUG

your comment is abusive...everyone has there own story about there experience with diabetes... we are here to support each other and debate points of view... please be kind in your responses.. everyone here hurts at times... they need a place to articulate their story... i wish you good health my friend...

i agree with you... doctors get very little information on nutrition...and endocrinologist should know more than any other doctor about nutrition... when you cook food you reduce the nutritional value to only 20% of its potential... raw: fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds can reduce your insulin injection requirement dramatically... cooked fats: animal or veggie are absorbed into you on a cellular level causing disease including diabetes, cancer etc... don't take my word for it... do the research.

chin up my friend... don't let the word "diabetic" define you... that is only a small part of you... i know it seems huge when you are in an insulin reaction... but there is another 90% of who you are that has nothing to do with diabetes... pay attention when you meet people.. is your conversation about your troubles with diabetes..? i use to do that.. but it only scarred new friends off.. that info can come later.. once you know them and they know you as a person and not a "diabetic" :)

i have to disagree with you... my C-peptide was O for 47 years...i have documentation that shows i am now producing insulin and my A1c is a 6.... i was on 70 units a day... NOW 10 units a day... when i start my exercise program i believe i will be able to get off insulin all together... the only change i made a year ago was changing over to a RAW-VEGAN diet... that means NO: meat, dairy, nothing from a can, box, jar or pasteurized... only RAW: fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds... I am reversingT1

research: RAW-VEGAN diet in conjunction with reversing diabetes... it is possible to heal... i'm doing it... also: dr bruce lipton "biology of belief" and tedx talks on cooked fats vs raw fats like raw nuts, seeds, avocados.. studies show that cooked fat animal or veggie are absorbed into your blood stream on a cellular level and cause poor environment leading to diabetes, heart conditions, cancers and virtually all diseases...can't tell you what to believe... so do the research...reverse T1.

being born with T1 had a profound affect on my life... i identified as a "diabetic"...i presented myself as "diabetic" and that scared everyone around me.. i'm learning that diabetes is only 10% of who i am... There is another 90% that has so many interest in life... it is hard to break away from the "diabetic" identity... in the last year i have accomplished something amazing..47 years T1- my body is now producing insulin...my A1c is at 6...it is possible to reverse diabetes... ask me how...
Rob K (5 лет назад)
sam.. confused by you "rubbish" comment...what are you referring to..? i am reversing my T1 diabetes through a raw/vegan diet... i was told by doctors that my condition would only get worse... now all of my doctors are unable to explain why i only use 10 units a day, and why my c-peptide is showing that my body is producing insulin after 47 years on insulin... i don't think doctors are well educated in nutrition...research RAW-VEGAN diet in conjunction with reversing T1.. 500 have reversed T1

I was diagnosed at an early age too, 9 years old, and I've lived with diabetes now for 22 years. People that make fun of you aren't good people. Being a diabetic makes you mature faster than others, so just know that even though it's not fair, you are more grown up than they are. They don't have the courage that we diabetics have to test our blood sugars and inject insulin everyday. We aren't different from anyone else because of diabetes, it just makes us diabetics unique.
