On a remote island miles off the coast of Scotland, Mati Ventrillon makes hotly sought-after Fair Isle sweaters according to traditions that are centuries old. Made is a series of simple, gorgeous short films that demonstrate how everyday luxury objects are made, and honor the process and artisans behind them. ---------- Like this video? Here’s a thing. The only thing that stops this band from getting huge worldwide is the design. Just look at what Burberry for example achieved. Their scars are world wide recognizable. You should really thing more about design. It’s not rocket science but still. You need something that ie YOU.

Very interesting. Very informative. Q: From the time your shear the animal until the time you finally have a completely finished garment that is finally put up on a drying 'rack' then, ultimately sold -- how long is the whole process? Are we talking about a month or more; or slightly less?

This is couture quality.

Hi which program is she using for testing the jacquard?

My mother used to hand-knit because it's cheaper... and she didn't knit in her "studio" with her "design". And her knit looks much better. And knitting using machines LOL? Down-voted for this pretentious bullshit.

kinda weird how we don't make our own coats. we just wander into a field and literally steal the coat off the back of some unsuspecting animal

+Paelorian She is a pretentious idiot who doesn't know how to knit... a $20 sweater from China has more "artisan-ness" in it. But you go ahead to pay for this.
Paelorian (2 месяца назад)
You're an idiot. This woman is an artisan who shows the hard work she does every day. Shearing sheep is actual labor, as is the rest of the work she does making sweaters.
G M (3 месяца назад)
Awesome. I love the way the sheep are sheared.
jonnda (3 месяца назад)
Can you imagine what that sweater would cost of they didn’t use that knitting machine? ...Which, by the way, those things are a stroke of engineering genius IMHO. I saw a similar device elsewhere on youtube, but for knitting hats or socks.

Oh I love how u shear them by hand. Yes the sheep look so much happier then if u for them .

so its actually "one of the softest" not THE softest.
AphyNGodiva (18 дней назад)
Merino is softer than Shetland but that also makes it far weaker because it is the thinness of the fiber that makes it so soft. It has to be mixed with another wool so it does not break. This happens with many other super soft wools too like cashmere (goat) and angora (rabbit). Shetland is probably the softest you could get that holds its own and doesn't need to be mixed.

Sheep wool is best for making rugs. It's too itchy and heavy to wear. It weights a ton when soaked with water! Europeans needed sheep wool to keep warm during the harsh freezing winter as there wasn't much options for staying warm back then. Their skin developed a tolerance for it over time but people who never worn sheep wool may develop skin allergy and irritant when in contact with the fibers. All animal fiber material may itch to an extent but wool is the most itchy of them all.
Yesenia Contreras (3 месяца назад)
Not all wool is itchy. Wool can be very fine and soft. When lanolized it is used as waterproof cloth diaper covers, it is very versatile.
KevInKobe (3 месяца назад)
No sane human wears wool directly on the skin. It won't even keep you warm if you do because it's an open weave.

Peter Lonjers (3 месяца назад)
oh there is debate about that but yea many forms of wool is softer than sheep. But wool is often used to refer to only sheep wool. When its from other animals it gets other names.

The softest, warmest and most expensive wool is vicuna and it comes from Peru.
Bill Oviedo (3 месяца назад)
Lanla Colan  No, quite the opposite. Wool is the textile fiber obtained from sheep and other animals, including cashmere and mohair from goats, qiviut from muskoxen, angora from rabbits, and other types of wool from camelids (vicunas). Wool consists of protein together with a few percent lipids. In this regard, it is chemically quite distinct from the more dominant textile, cotton, which is mainly cellulose. Wool: animal fibre forming the protective covering, or fleece, of sheep or of other hairy mammals, such as goats and camels (vicunas). Source: Encyclopedia Britannica.
Lanla Colan (3 месяца назад)
wool comes from sheep and specifically refers to sheep fibers.
Bill Oviedo (3 месяца назад)
Fernando Ramirez No, Vicuñas are native to the central Andes in South America, are found in Peru, northwestern Argentina, Bolivia, and northern Chile. A smaller, introduced population lives in central Ecuador. Peru and Bolivia have the largest number. Peru is the largest exporter of vicuna wool in the world. The vicuna is the national animal of Peru and is depicted on the Peruvian coat of arms.

1. The softest sheep's wool is merino. It's a fact you can Google. 2. Everyone listing cashmere, that is from goats. So it's luxurious and soft, but it's not sheep's wool.
Mary Watson (3 месяца назад)
The softest sheep's wool is Bowmont A Merino/ Shetland cross which now breeds true.
Oye kash (5 месяцев назад)
1. No it is not a fact you can google. Infact different links give different results. Hmmm I wonder why that is. 2. A goat fleece is also considered wool. Peole suggesting Cashmere/pashmina are not saying 'Softest sheep wool'. They are just saying 'Softest wool'.

+Paelorian except..... she's not using a traditional craft. She's using a machine to replicate a traditional craft. I'm sure it's a quality product but she is kinda trading off a reputation made by people who did it by hand and struggled for generations to provide for their families in a remote part of the world.
Paelorian (2 месяца назад)
If it wasn't for people with disposable income to buy these luxury products, these traditional crafts industries would go extinct because industrial factory products are less expensive. I am grateful that not everyone is poor, for those who are not are able to enrich their lives with finer things.
farhan zainan (6 месяцев назад)
If I lived in a country where it requires a wool jumper. I will definitely buy one from this lady. The amount of work and hours spent from the sheep to the final products deserved a respects.
Nelson Gonzalez (6 месяцев назад)
Some things are just best left to traditional methods, industrialisation has its limits. Wonderful garments.
waseeem M. (6 месяцев назад)
the softest wool in the world is found in Kashmir known as Pashmina or Cashmere.
