Walnut Wine Rack | A Simple Woodworking Project for a Friend's Wedding
I made a walnut wine rack for a friend's wedding. I tried first using a hand saw to cut down the rough walnut lumber into manageable sizes. I then milled it down to size using a table saw, a planer, and a jointer. Once the wood was milled down, I cut the pieces down to final size using the table saw. I cut a 45deg angle on the ends and added the slots all using the table saw. Before going to final sanding, I used a chisel to remove the planner marks. (My planner has nicks in the blades) By removing the larger bumps the sanding took a lot less time. Once all was sanded, I finished everything with some boiled linseed oil. If you are looking for plans for this build, let me know in the comments below! I want to see if its worth my time to make them. How to Build a Wine Rack | DIY Wine Rack Minwax Wood Stain
Pete shows us how to build a simple wine rack that will hold six to eight wine bottles and six large wine glasses. A wine rack is a simple way to add style to your kitchen or dining room while increasing the efficiency of the space. To start, cut all of your boards to length. A miter saw is the easiest way to do this, but you can also use a circular saw or a handsaw. You should end up with eleven total boards. Next, clean up any rough edges with the orbital sander, then use a jigsaw to create the rounded corners that will give your wine rack that professional look. After you’ve created the rounded corners, it’s time to measure and trace the slots for the wine glasses. Once you’ve measured and drawn all of your lines, use a drill and a jigsaw to make all six of the notches. Now you’re ready to start assembling. Use glue, nails or screws, and pre-drilled jig holes to ensure a neat, professional-looking fit. After a final sanding, the next step is to stain and add a clear protective finish to your project. If you are looking to save time, apply a one step, easy to use product like Minwax Polyshades, in the color of your choice, following the label instructions. Polyshades is a stain and polyurethane in one, so you won’t have to do two separate steps of applying a stain and then a clear protective finish on top. Once PolyShades has fully dried, the next step is to attach the wine rack to the wall. To do this, drill holes in the back of the wine rack, find the studs in your wall, then attach the wine rack to the studs using three-inch wood screws. The last and most important step is to fill up your wine rack and enjoy it! This DIY wine rack will be a useful, beautiful conversation piece for years to come, and you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you built it yourself. http://blog.minwax.com/05/25/build-a-wine-rack-with-diy-pete/ http://www.minwax.com/wood-products/one-step-stain-and-finishes/minwax-polyshades Free Downloadable Plans are Available for this Wine Rack Project at: http://www.diypete.com/simple-wine-rack/ ---- Looking for more DIY videos? Pallet wood Wine Bar
I have made two of these in the past for friends and family and I was recently asked to make another one. The main frame is made up of 2"x2" and then covered with pallet wood. The bar stands about 36.5" tall and is about 30" long by 14" deep. The angle used for cutting the wine glass holders on the table saw was 10 degrees. I finished the bar with Early American stain from Minwax and then gave it a light sanding to make it look worn. The wine bar can hold up to 9 glasses and 3 bottles of wine. One that we really enjoy is this big bird feeder right outside our dining room. He made it a while back, and it's a little worse for ware, so I thought it was time to remake my grandad's design with some fresh materials. If you've ever taken a shop class in school or done a woodworking project as a child, there's a pretty good chance you've made a birdhouse. Wood selection may not have been a priority, probably using cheap pine boards from the home center. Whatever wood choose must be able to withstand the rigors of outdoor use. My research has shown that the cedar bird feeder shouldn't be finished with anything, unless you wanted to paint it. I thought some spar urethane or protective coating was necessary, but many, many opinions pointed to leaving the cedar bare and letting it resist the weather like it should. I purchased some cedar 1x4s from the home center to make this bird feeder. My grandad's design required mostly wide, flat boards to make up the roof, walls, and base, rather than dimensional planks. In order to get those flat panels, the 1x4s had to glue together on the short sides. Typically, pine 1x4s shrink as they dry and original 90 degree cuts end up rounding over. To remove these soft and distinct edges you can use a jointer or a table saw to create a flatter face appropriate for panel making. Cedar doesn't shrink in the same way when drying, so these short faces were pretty flat and clean. To join the boards together, I simply used a biscuit jointer to keep the 1x4s aligned during glue-up. I cut and glued the sections that would become the roof, the two walls, and the bird feeder's fenced-in floor. I didn't have any dimensions or plans to go by, I just used my grandad's existing bird feeder and tried to replicate it as best I could. Using some double-sided tape to keep the wall pieces together, I cut them both with the circular saw to form their final shape. The two roof panels just needed a simple bevel on one edge so when glued together, it matched the pitch of the roof. To find the roof pitch, I simply used the cutoff pieces from the side walls and set my table saw blade to that angle. I then cut a small dado in the sides of each wall panel so that glass walls could slide into place. The two remaining walls will be made of glass panes so that you can see how much bird seed is left in the feeder. I had some left over pieces of glass, but they were too big for this project and needed to be cut down. I used a hand-held glass cutter with a straightedge to score some nice clean lines on a few sheets of glass. After applying some slight pressure at the edges, the glass snapped along the score lines and the remaining walls were ready to be slid into place. I cut some small spacers out of scrap cedar to stop the glass walls from hitting the base panel. This gap will allow the bird seed to spill out the bottom but create enough of a jam that the seeds will trickle out over time. Now that the roof is all glued up, the walls have been cut, and the base panel had a small retaining wall added, it was time to assemble the feeder. I attached the wooden walls to the base panel using glue and screws from the underside. I went outside and took down the old bird feeder from its post and removed the old mounting screws. Using some new outdoor decking hardware, I screwed the updated bird feeder's base onto the post. Once mounted, I slid in the two glass pieces onto the small spacers. I didn't want the roof to be permanently fixed, so I connected the roof to the side walls using some hooks and springs. This system will allow me to easily slide the roof on and off again while being strong enough to stay in place during high winds. The bid feeder was fully assembled. The only thing left to do was to add a whole bunch of bird seed and this project was done. MUSIC: http://share.epidemicsound.com/iltms

Building The Ultimate Home Bar
This is the Ultimate Custom Bar! This piece has been on my to-do list for the past few years and I was finally able to get it made. This custom bar is made in white oak, black veneer and the oxidized quartz. I went with a classic crisscross wine bottle storage. This bar also features a hidden storage area to hide and display two bottles of wine. The left and right side are designed to hold wine glasses and beer glasses, the middle has four hand cut dovetailed drawers. I applied my signature leopard print design to the drawer fronts. The middle was designed to hold and display a large bottle. The bottom left and right sides are designed to hold liquor bottles of all sizes. There are led light that illuminated the interior of the cabinet. The top is made in oxidized quartz with a 4 inch back splash made in white oak. It stands 36 inches deep 16 inches deep and 94 inches long. Thank for watching! Cup/Bottle/Wine Glass Holder
Our couch has flat arms and this causes a tendency to place drinks on them. Not good because of the condensation, not good because things can be knocked over. Something had to be done. My solution was to build a cup holder that could receive a variety of sizes of drink containers so the user could secure any drink he or she needed to set down. My main focus was how to chuck in a wine glass such that it could not be accidentally knocked over since that would be the worse case of a drink being spilled. More wood scraps came in handy here, just some pine from the big box stores, cut to length and joined with tall box joints. I think this would be neat to make with some fancy dovetail joints, but I'll leave that to somebody more talented. The main issues encountered so far: This is a solution for my situation; not all couches can use such a design because of the variety of arm shapes & styles. The cork has breathed a little in the seasons and it's not quite as snug now with bottles; still impossible to knock down accidentally, but it's not a tight fit anymore and there's something not satisfying about that. It's inherent of a project that's over-engineered like this. A much simple solution could be created to receive a variety of sized container rather than this tiered system. Again, it works for me and it solved the problem I needed solved, but something more elegant exists out there I'm sure. DIY Wine Bottle Bird Feeder
Welcome back to another episode of Withjack Workshops! Today I'm going to be showing you how to make a gravity fed self-filling bird feeder from an empty wine bottle. For this you will just need about 4 feet of pressure treated 1x6 deck boards, an empty wine bottle, and a free weekend. Here's the link for the glass cutter I used: https://goo.gl/jlQ9ZT It's placed in a small jig I made for scoring bottles. It's effective about 75% of the time, other times the bottle slips or the score isn't perfect and the glass doesn't part well. They are easy to make, just take your time and watch for sharp glass pieces! After you score the glass, place it under cold water, and then hit it with boiling water. Do this back and forth a few times and the bottle will split along the score line. It sometimes takes a few tries to get right, just keep trying! --------------------------------------------------------------- Help support my free videos! Maple Wine Racks Part 1: Joinery | Woodworking
In this video I will be building a wine rack custom made to fit inside the center of the walnut buffet cabinet I built in previous videos. This wine rack will be made from Maple and the build will employ several very useful techniques including joint layout with a story stick, cutting tenons on the table saw, and most notably, making multiple identical parts using pattern routing. This is video one of two of this build. This first video covers the build through the joinery and dry fit. The second video will cover the pattern routing and final assembly. How to Build a Whiskey Barrel Coffee Table
Learn how to turn an old whiskey barrel into an amazing whiskey barrel coffee table. The table top is hinged which makes the furniture a functional whiskey barrel chest to hold blankets and other items. For more info, project photos, and downloadable plans check out: http://www.diypete.com/whiskeybarrel I found a few barrels locally in Montana from a super nice guy who was selling them on Craigslist. I feel like I got a great deal because I paid $100 for the full barrel and $25 for the pre-cut half barrels. If you get a full barrel you’ll need to cut it in half using a jigsaw or sawzall. Use a prybar to remove the metal bands. The bands are most likely secured with nails and so they should pop right off. Do not take the end bands off, because the barrel will fall apart if you do. Use a rubber mallet to flush up the boards if they stick out farther than they should. Do your best to get them somewhat even with each other. Lightly sand the barrel using 220 grit sandpaper to remove debris and smooth out the barrel. Wipe or brush stain on the barrel. I used “Special Walnut” stain from Minwax. Let the stain dry and then put the metal bands back in place. You will be able to line the holes up on the bands with the old nail holes that are still in the wood. Use 1 inch screws to re-connect the bands. The screws are helpful compared to nails because they will sometimes pull on boards to even them out. The next step is to build the base out of 2×12’s. I cut two 2×12’s to 27 inches which is the widest part of the barrel. The width of the barrel at this portion was 25 inches. So, I put a mark on the 2×12 at 13.5″ which was the center of the wood. I then measure down 3 inches and marked where the two points met. Next, take the width of the barrel where the base will sit (25 inches in my case), and divide by two to get 12.5″. The barrel base pieces will have a nice arc after they are cut out with a jigsaw. Test the base pieces with the barrel. You can make adjustments using a jigsaw or a a flap sander on an angle grinder. Use a level and tape measure to make sure the barrel is level and sits even. Attach the whiskey barrel to the base using 3 inch wood screws. Drill pilot holes first so the wood does not split. It’s time to build the apron around the top of the barrel. The total length of the barrel was 37 inches so I cut two pieces of 1×4 board to 37 inches. The total width of the barrel at its widest point is 27 inches. I flushed up the 1×4 with the barrel and then cut two pieces 20 inches long for the sides. Connect the 1×4 apron pieces using a kreg jig. Drill 2 pocket holes on the ends of both shorter boards. Next, use 1 1/4 inch kreg screws to connect the boards. Center the apron on the barrel and attach using 1 1/2 inch wood screws. Make sure to pre-drill so the wood does not split. Cut a 1×2 or 1×3 board to use for the decorative base piece. Mine was 29 inches long (2 inches longer than the 2×12 base piece). Bevel the ends at 45 degree angles. Cut four 1×8 boards for the table top. My whiskey barrel was 37 inches so I cut these boards to 38 inches. The extra inch makes a half inch lip on each side so you can easily open or close the chest. Next, use a Kreg Jig to drill pocket holes in the boards. Attach chest hinges to the back side of the apron. ---- Looking for more DIY videos? I’d recommend using a miter saw. Remove hardware from the cooler. Assemble the legs. I used a Kreg Jig to drill 4 pocket holes in one board for each leg. Then connect using wood glue and 2 1/2 inch Kreg screws. Assemble the frame for the cooler out of 2×4 boards. Connect each 2×4 with 2 1/2 inch screws. You can make it as snug as you’d like. I left about a half inch of play on each side to make it easy to remove the cooler if needed. Use the cooler as a template or measure the cooler to determine how long to cut these boards. Attach the 4 corners to the top frame. Use 2 1/2 inch wood screws and put about 4 for each corner. Drill a pilot hole before putting the screws in so the wood doesn’t split. Add the apron. Rip fence boards on a table saw and then glue and nail them to the top as shown in the photo. This will create about a half inch overhang on each side. I cut the apron to 3 1/2 inches wide. Create the cooler support out of 2×4’s Place the frame upside down on a flat surface and slide the cooler in place. Next, put the support at the base of the cooler and attach to the legs using screws and pocket holes. If you don’t have a kreg jig, you could pre-drill and then run screws in at an angle. Add fence pickets around all sides to hide the cooler. I started by attaching a board in the middle of the sections and then moved to the left and right. Use as many full width fence boards as you can. Rip the outer boards on a table saw to get a perfect fit. I’d recommend spacing the boards roughly 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch from each other. Add trim horizontally on each side. Rip fence boards into 2 inch strips and then glue and nail the trim in place. Place the cooler in the frame and then mark where the hole will go through the side of the wood surround. Then drill a small hole through the wood from the inside. Next, use a larger bit or hole saw from the outside to finish the full sized hole. This is where the piping will go through. Determine the height and width of your cooler lid. Mine was a little less than 2 inches high and so I ripped a couple 2×4 boards to make them 2 inches tall. Then place the boards around the perimeter and cut to size. The lid should be snug with the wood. Attach the plastic cooler lid to the wood using 2 inch screws. Pre-drill and then put in the screw. Make sure the outer part of the lid is flush with the wood. The inner part will protrude from the wood because it is what will allow the cooler to stay in place when the lid goes down. The inner portion will seal the cooler. Cut 4 fence boards down to size and rip them each to the same width on the table saw. Leave about an 1/8 of an inch between each. Use glue and an air nailer to keep them in place. ---- Looking for more DIY videos? Be sure to check out our channel and subscribe for updates! We post a weekly tutorial every Thursday.
