You will immediately notice her changes in the picture above and I walk you through in detail how YOU can get these types of changes as well. Hypothyroid patients almost always have difficulty with weight loss due to a variety of reasons. Most patients wrongly believe that their weight loss problem is due primarily to a lack of thyroid hormone and that's where they are wrong. Low thyroid hormone by itself causes a slow metabolism but it also causes and encourages other hormone imbalances. Specifically, it leads to insulin resistance, leptin resistance, and even estrogen/progesterone imbalances. It is these changes that make future weight loss impossible. So that means focusing on thyroid hormone alone generally won't result in significant weight loss. Even adding on NDT or T3 to your regimen will likely result in 5-10 pounds of weight loss at MOST. Does Levothyroxine cause weight gain? That is the question I am going to answer in this video today. Here is a common problem: patients with hypothyroidism present to their doctor, get put on T4 medication like Levothyroxine or Synthroid and they CONTINUE to gain weight - despite no change in their diet or exercise routine. How can this be? In this video, I answer what I think is going on in many patients and it has to do with T4 to reverse T3 conversion when certain patients are given medications that contain T4 only. In the setting of inflammation, trauma, infections, liver/kidney issues, low-calorie diets, and nutrient deficiencies the body can take T4 and convert it into the thyroid blocking metabolite reverse T3. High levels of reverse T3 then compete for binding at the T3 cellular receptor site and put the brakes on thyroid and metabolic function. So how do you treat this condition? Most patients will need medication containing T3 like natural desiccated thyroid or liothyronine/Cytomel to "flush" the system. I also give several tips that I use in my office to help boost thyroid function if your doctor isn't willing to give you medication with T3 in it: 1. Optimize T4 to T3 conversion - I recommend the combination of zinc plus selenium. 2. Fix your adrenals - Consider using adrenal adaptogens or adrenal glandulars both of which can enhance cortisol and improve your stress response. 3. Add high-intensity exercise - To help lower insulin and leptin levels. 4. Reduce inflammation and find hidden sources of inflammation - the easiest first place to look is at your diet. 5. Lower leptin and insulin levels - It will be impossible to lose weight with leptin resistance and/or insulin resistance and both conditions reduce T4 to T3 conversion. Especially if you have an underactive thyroid. Your metabolism has slowed down and you’re almost always feeling tired. In this video we're looking at 4 steps required to successfully lose weight with hypothyroidism. TITLE - How To Lose Weight With Hypothyroidism Slide - 1. Optimise Your Thyroid Medication If your medication is not helping to correct thyroid hormone levels, as well as relieve symptoms, then weight loss goes from difficult to impossible. Determine what type of medication is better for you, and also find the optimal dose required. While Levothyroxine is on average more effective, dessicated thyroid is a useful alternative that is reportedly much better tolerated. There is no difference between taking your thyroid hormone meds in the morning vs evening. Choose whatever is easier for you to have it on a fasting stomach. SLIDE 2. Cut Back on Added Sugars and Refined Starches I need to begin with this clarification: Carbohydrates are not inherently bad for you. That is, they do not make you fat or sick on their own. That said, carbs in the form of added sugars and highly refined starches are unhealthy and unnecessary. They offer almost zero nutritional benefit and make up a large portion of the excess calories we consume. Cutting back on added sugar is the most simple and direct way to cut out excess “empty” calories. This is done by limiting intake of junk foods, flavoured drinks, alcohol, white bread, most cereals, and a good portion of packaged food in your supermarket’s “health food” aisle. Now it’s unrealistic (and unfair) to expect yourself to completely avoid added sugar every day of the year. But you need to begin taking actionable steps that help you cut back and form healthier habits. Start by not having junk foods at home, or at least keep them out of sight in a cupboard you never use. 3. Base Meals Around Vegetables and Protein If you want to lose weight with an underactive thyroid, vegies and a source of protein should be the foundation of almost every meal you make, and plated first when serving. The main benefit of protein is that it’s much more satiating than both fat and carbs. That means it has a unique ability to reduce appetite and therefore your overall caloric intake too. STUDY - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8862477, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15466943 Studies show high protein diets may also reduce obsessive thoughts about food by 60% and cut desire for late-night snacks by half (3, 4). Foods high in protein include meat, seafood, eggs, nuts, legumes (beans) and dairy. Protein is also the muscle-building nutrient, so a high protein diet complements regular exercise. Nutrient-dense meals are even more important for those with hypothyroidism and other autoimmune diseases, where nutrient absorption and deficiency are more common. Emphasis goes to green leafy vegetables, mushrooms and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. As a general guide, the protein portion of your meal should be the size of your palm, and salad/vegetables the size of your hand. This would leave about 1/4 or less of your plate for healthy carbs if you so choose (such as rice or potato). 4. Increase Your Intake of Selenium and Zinc Selenium and zinc are two critical nutrients directly involved in thyroid function and metabolism. Selenium is an essential mineral that helps the body to recycle iodine. That’s the reason the thyroid has the highest selenium content (per gram of tissue) of all our organs. It’s thought that low selenium levels contribute to hypothyroidism through alternate mechanisms related to iodine. For this reason it’s fundamental to eat a diet that contains many selenium-rich foods, such as: Brazil nuts Tuna and sardines Beef and chicken Eggs Legumes Zinc is an essential mineral required to regulate TSH, which is a hormone from the brain that controls how much thyroid hormone your thyroid produces. In fact, the metabolism of zinc and thyroid hormones are closely interlinked, which is why a deficiency can lead to alopecia (hair loss). While zinc deficiency is very uncommon in the developed world, it’s still recommended to eat a variety of zinc-rich foods (8). This includes: Oysters and shellfish Beef and chicken Legumes, nuts and seeds Milk and yoghurt. Okay so I hope you found those 4 tips useful... How To Take Synthroid Properly | Best Way To Take Levothyroxine Correctly | When To Take Thyroid Medication After Eating Hey guys! This weeks video is all about how to take your thyroid medication properly to get the most out of it. Levothyroxine is a medicine used to treat an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism) which affects 1 in 70 women and 1 in 1,000 men in the UK. The thyroid gland makes thyroid hormone which helps to control energy levels and growth. Levothyroxine is taken to replace the missing thyroid hormone. KEY FACTS: • Levothyroxine starts working straight away, but it may be several weeks before your symptoms start to improve. • The most common side effects of levothyroxine are caused by taking a bigger dose than you need. Your doctor can lower your dose to help reduce any side effects. • Before you start taking levothyroxine, your healthcare professional will do a blood test to see what dose you need. Once you start taking the medicine you'll have regular blood tests to see how well it’s working. HOW AND WHEN TO TAKE: • Unless told otherwise by your prescriber or healthcare professional take levothyroxine once a day in the morning, ideally at least 30-60 minutes before having breakfast or a drink containing caffeine like tea or coffee. • Both breakfast and caffeinated drinks can stop your body taking in levothyroxine properly so it doesn't work as well. • If you can't take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach take levothyroxine at least 2 hours after eating food. • If you buy any medicines, check with a pharmacist that they are safe to take with levothyroxine. Levothyroxine should not be taken at the same time as indigestion remedies or preparations containing calcium or iron (which are contained in some vitamin products). These types of medicines reduce the amount of levothyroxine absorbed by your body. Leave at least 2-4 hours between taking your dose of levothyroxine and any such preparation. • Soya interferes with thyroxine absorption, therefore if you are taking thyroxine you should try to avoid soya. If you wish to take soya, there should be as long a time interval as possible between eating the soya and taking the thyroxine. • Avoid products such as kelp, as they may interfere with thyroid function & wellbeing. Kelp is derived from seaweed and is naturally high in iodine. Because of this it is sometimes marketed as a "thyroid booster" and can be purchased in dry preparations and tablets. Cruciferous Vegetables: Like Bok Choy, Cabbage, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cauliflower, avoid eating these in raw form. A small amount of it can be eaten when cooked properly. 2. Gluten: Having wheat and its products while having thyroid is not at all a problem. But, if your doctor has asked you to steer away from it, ask him why? Has he tried some variation on you? Has he found something in the test result that might have triggered it? If he answers you logically, stay away from gluten. 3. Soy: Soy in any form like soy flour, milk, cheese must be avoided as it is known to interfere with the thyroid functioning. 4. Sugar: Sugar in a way is already not helping in any manner except in increasing your weight on the scale and again interfering. Best to ditch this devil! 5. Milk: Having milk is good for your health. If you dislike the taste of it, have it’s alternate forms like curd, paneer. 6. Non-Veg food Items: If you are a non-vegetarian, it’s fine to have these, have them grilled or in the form of low oil curries. Moderation is the key always. 7. Processed Foods: NO NO NO. Ban these items from your grocery list at all items. They look good only on the shelves, not when they go inside your body. 8. Fruits: All foods are good for you, have them. Try to incorporate atleast 2-3 servings of fruit in your diet daily. 9. Nuts: A few almonds (Read 3-4) would help you in giving the essential fatty acids that your body requires daily. They are the good ones, keep them. 10. Fats: The fats that one must avoid are the ones present in junk food, processed foods and street foods. 11. Roots and Tubers: The potato is the king of vegetables, a normal-moderate amount of which leads to no harm. Same goes for colocasia and other parts of the family. 12. Pulses: They are purely good proteins and healthy at the same time. Give it a go! . In this video I go over the 5 main reasons that patients who switch from Levothyroxine to Armour thyroid DON'T lose weight. Many patients believe that switching from T4 to NDT will cause immediate weight loss and are disappointed when it doesn't happen. The truth is that Armour thyroid CAN help with weight loss but you need to make sure that these 5 barriers aren't standing in your way: 1. Your dose isn't high enough - Many Doctors under dose patients when converting from T4 medication to NDT by about 50%. Use the chart in this video to make sure your dose is high enough. 2. You need more T3 added to your regimen - Several conditions like euthyroid sick syndrome or tissue level hypothyroidism make it so patients need more T3 than what Armour thyroid provides. So while armour may be a step in the right direction you may need more T3 added to your NDT. 3. You are suffering from Leptin resistance - High leptin levels decrease T4 to T3 conversion and can make weight loss impossible unless it is addressed. Use this video to help you find out if you have leptin resistance and if you need to treat it. 4. You are reacting to fillers in Armour thyroid - Many patients react poorly to the methylcellulose that is used in Armour thyroid. It can reduce the amount of free thyroid hormone that is absorbed when you take this medication. Make sure this isn't limiting the amount of thyroid hormone your body can absorb! 5. Your Reverse T3 is TOO high - High levels of reverse T3 effectively put the brake on your thyroid system and can result in a slow metabolism and symptoms of hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism medications are addictive, and the body becomes reliant on them, which is why the mainstream establishment maintains that people must take them forever. Those who have been taking hypothyroidism medications for years must slowly wean themselves from the drugs. Abruptly stopping these medications will result in extreme fatigue, and additional thyroid problems. Treatment Recommendations Eliminate and discard all non-stick cookware Eliminate Soy - Soy suppresses thyroid function, imbalances hormones, and it has been shown to cause goiters (an enlargement of the thyroid gland) in previously healthy individuals, which shows that it disrupts iodine usage. Adhere to an Alkaline Diet - This is extremely helpful when curing any chronic disease. Reference the Body pH and Disease article to guide you. Hemp Fiber - This is a broad spectrum supplement and a mild laxative. L-Tyrosine - Tyrosine is a natural amino acid which helps the body produce its own thyroid hormone. This is also known to help with the depression, which usually accompanies hypothyroidism. Most naturopaths recommend that 500 mg. be taken 2-3 times daily. L-Arginine - Arginine is known to stimulate the thyroid and its hormones. It also improves immune function, improves fertility, and alleviates erectile dysfunction. Iodine - The thyroid needs iodine to function properly, and lots of people now suffer from iodine deficiencies. To test yourself, place some iodine (we use 2%) on your stomach. Make a dot the size of a silver dollar (or twice the size of a British 50p). If it disappears within 12 hours, then you are iodine deficient. Keep adding iodine in increasing amounts, until it no longer disappears in a 12-hour period. This works due to the fact that the body absorbs iodine at the rate at which it is needed. Do not use povidone iodine and do not orally consume iodine. This is especially an important precaution for those with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Avoid all sources of fluoride - As already mentioned, fluoride suppresses the thyroid, and is likely to be the leading cause of hypothyroidism. Drink spring water, avoid soft drinks, use fluoride-free toothpaste, use a shower filter, and throw away non-stick cookware. Both coffee and tea naturally contain fluoride, so use iodine to compensate if these drinks are indispensable. Eat a natural diet - To help the body to heal itself, remove burdens on its immune system. This means that all processed foods, artificial flavors, colors, preservatives, white flour, white sugar, table salt, hydrogenated oils, aluminum, high fructose corn syrup, and etcetera should be eliminated from the diet. Organic food is the ideal. Do not trust marketing that reads "All Natural", because this phrase is unregulated, so anyone can use it for anything. Read labels carefully. Chlorophyll - Supplementing with chlorophyll provides essential copper, helps oxygenate the body, builds healthy red blood cells, and it overall assists with skin health.
