All rights reserved. Understanding the menstrual cycle. The menstrual cycle is a term used to describe monthly events that occur within a woman's body in preparation for the possibility of pregnancy. Each month, an egg is released from an ovary in a process called ovulation. At the same time, the lining of the uterus thickens, ready for pregnancy. If fertilization does not take place, the lining of the uterus is shed in menstrual bleeding and the cycle starts over. An ovary contains hundreds of thousands of primary oocytes - immature eggs, or ova. Each of these is enclosed in a structure called a follicle, and at this stage -- a primordial follicle. The menstrual cycle is under control of hormones secreted by the pituitary gland and the ovaries. The pituitary itself is under control of the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus produces a hormone called the gonadotropin-releasing hormone or GnRH. GnRH stimulates the anterior lobe of the pituitary to secrete follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). FSH travels in the bloodstream to the ovaries and stimulates a group of follicles to grow. These primordial follicles develop into primary follicles and then secondary follicles. These produce a hormone named estrogen which acts to stimulate the growth of the endometrium -- the inner lining of the uterus. The secondary follicles compete with each other and only one of them will survive and become a mature follicle, the rest atrophy and die. The increasing level of estrogen also acts on the hypothalamus and the anterior pituitary to increase the level of GnRH and induce the production of another hormone -- luteinizing hormone (LH). A surge in LH secretion triggers ovulation - the release of the egg from the follicle and the ovary. The egg is then swept up by the fimbriae (FIM-bree-ee) and taken into the uterine tube. Fertilization by a spermatozoon, when it occurs, usually takes place in the ampulla, the widest section of the fallopian tube. The fertilized egg immediately begins the process of development while travelling toward the uterus. After 6 days it becomes a blastocyst and is implanted into the endometrium of the uterus. Meanwhile, the left-over of the ruptured follicle has become a corpus luteum which secretes progesterone. Progesterone further stimulates uterine development making it a nutritious bed for the embryo in the event of pregnancy. In the absence of pregnancy, the corpus luteum atrophies and progesterone level falls. This leads to the breakdown of the endometrium, menstruation begins and the cycle starts over. On average, it’s a 28-day cycle. 1) FOLLICULAR Phase - Day 1 to Day 14 - Go hard! Do high intensity workouts, lift heavy and perform total body strength training. - Your body is more tolerant to pain and muscles recover quicker. - Your body uses Carbs as its main source of fuel. - You can increase your carb intake slightly especially after an intense workout. 2) LUTEAL Phase - Day 14 to Day 28 - I like to call this phase the “roller coaster” phase. - this is when all the PMS symptoms start to hit: you might crave for sugar or high fat food, you have bigger appetite, you feel sluggish, you have trouble sleeping, your body retains more water, you feel bloated and you might suffer from mild cramps too. - Your body turns to FAT AS FUEL instead of carbs. - Good news, your body is now burning FAT rather than carbs or glycogen. Focus on steady pace cardio to get the most out of your workout. - This is also when the muscle breakdown increases, hence it takes longer for you to recover from your workout. So choose moderation workout that’s less intense. - You might lose your motivation BUT power through your workout, as much as possible, eat well and you WILL feel better. We are all very different and it takes time to really understand your body. Ninety percent of women have premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms at some point in their reproductive life. Even though a huge portion of the world’s female population has uncomfortable and unpleasant premenstrual symptoms, doctors still aren’t totally sure why they happen. Changing hormones are the reason behind it all, but experts don’t know exactly how, for example, hormonal shifts would cause cramps or feelings of depression. Brain chemicals are also involved, but it’s unclear to what extent. If you have more severe premenstrual symptoms, it doesn’t mean that you have higher or more out-of-whack hormone levels than other women. What I Eat In A Day For Hormonal Balance
Hi wonderful people! I want to stress that I’m not dismissing the pill or what it can do for people. It has many benefits, the main one being preventing unwanted births (which is huge!). My aim for this video wasn’t to sway people in one direction or another, although it might’ve seemed so with my experience. I wanted to give a bit of backstory as to why I was eating specific foods for hormonal balance, and why my hormones were out of whack. I was prescribed Yaz when I was very young to combat painful, heavy periods and acne. Looking back, I think we could’ve explored different options that would have been more appropriate for a 15/16 year old that wasn’t sexually active. The pill might be the right choice for some people and not for others, that is for each individual to decide on, hopefully with all the information needed to make a well-informed choice. For those of us who are not on the pill, or who have recently quit and have found our hormones affecting our way of life, these are some of the foods and rituals I have found help me, especially during that time of the month. When that happens the body can be in a state of what we call estrogen dominance. In another words the estrogen is too much in the body relative to progesterone, because the progesterone may also be shunted away. In absolute terms the estrogen may be normal. But in relative terms it may be high because of the low in progesterone level. When this happens then the body’s estrogen tend to circulate and causes what we call estrogenic effect such as bloatedness, edema, swelling of the breasts, anxiety, brain fog, and severe PMS. Sometimes it’s not severe, it just can be troublesome. As well during the adrenal recovery period sometimes the estrogenic hormone can raise, and therefore the body can experience estrogenic symptoms such as PMS and the things that we mentioned earlier as well. This usually is temporary and it should go away. However, if it doesn’t that means there’s something else going on such as liver congestion or extracellular matrix pollution and underlying issues of the body has to be dealt with. Hormonal axis usually is self-regulatory. But when a person has adrenal fatigue that regulation tend to be dysfunctional. Some people continue to have normal regulation but many have imbalances. As a result, their estrogen can be higher than normal or lower than normal. And same thing with other hormones such as progesterone, DHEA, testosterone. So don’t be too afraid when things like this happen. Talk to your practitioner. There are reasons why. We don’t want to jump to conclusion that it is only estrogen dominance that was as a result of adrenal fatigue. Sometimes these things can come on and they tend to resolve. If it don’t resolve then we have to look deeper and figure out what is really going on and what the body is trying to tell us in terms of the hormonal axis regulation. Estrogen: How to Balance Hormones with Proper Food & Vitamins- Thomas DeLauer How do we balance estrogen and testosterone in our bodies and how do we know which estrogens are good or bad? Functions include: Puberty changes in women Fertility Plays a role in controlling cholesterol levels Helps bone health Affects the brain, including mood Also affects the heart, skin and other body tissues Affects heart and blood vessels In males, the maturation of sperm and labido maintenance Estrogen is produced by the ovaries, fat tissue, testis and adrenal glands. There are three kinds of estrogen: Estradiol - the primary kind of estrogen found in women during their fertile years Primarily produced in the ovaries, but also the placenta and adrenal glands Excess estradiol is implicated in many diseases, such as cancers and fibroids Found in both women and men Estriol - the estrogen associated with pregnancy A waste product of estrogen metabolism Estrone - the estrogen produced postmenopause Produced in tissues throughout the body, mainly fat and muscle tissues Known as the weakest form of estrogen Found in both women and men Estrogen levels change: Throughout the month when fertile, with peak estrogen in the middle of a woman’s menstrual cycle, signalling ovulation, and the lowest levels while bleeding. Estrogen levels drop after menopause. Problems can arise when your body produces too much or too little estrogen Too little - symptoms: Women Irregular periods Mood swings Loss of sexual desire Trouble sleeping Hot flashes Headaches Men Excess adipose tissue around the midsection Low sexual desire Too little causes: Anorexia Extreme exercise Medications Hypogonadism Post-childbirth Too much - symptoms: Women Irregular periods Weight gain Fatigue Low sex drive Depression and anxiety More intense premenstrual pain Cysts Men Erectile dysfunction Female characteristics, such as breasts Prostate enlargement and cancer Low sex drive Depression Fatigue Weight gain Too much causes: Obesity Puberty Diabetes Pregnancy High blood pressure Ovarian or adrenal gland tumors Medications When estrogen is broken down through aerobic metabolism, it can be broken into “good” or “bad” estrogen metabolites. The good metabolites, 2-hydroxyestrone (2-OHE), are estrogen antagonists. They have high antioxidant activity, providing protection for the heart and brain. The bad metabolites, 16-hydroxyestrone (16-OHE), are estrogen agonists. They have been implicated in causing cancer and weight gain. Therapies that increase the 2-OHE:16-OHE ratio are thought to decrease the risk for a number of estrogen-responsive cancers. Natural compounds found in food have been founds to be antiestrogenic and thus are being further explored to discover how to capture these benefits for possible cancer prevention and treatment. DIM (Diindolylmethane) DIM is a stable compound derived from the plant indole I3C (indole-3-carbinol) found in cruciferous vegetables. Dietary indoles found in cruciferous veggies such as broccoli and cabbage, have been found to exhibit chemoprotective and chemotherapeutic properties against many cancers. Its benefit has to do with hormone balancing. I3C has been found to decrease estrogen signaling and alter estrogen metabolism, leading to a reduced production of “bad” estrogen metabolites. DIM consumption has been linked to an increase in the production of the “good” estrogen metabolites and thus a resulting decrease in the production of the “bad” estrogen metabolites. -Increases the 2-OHE:16-OHE ratio One study on women with thyroid proliferative disease (TPD) found that supplemental DIM enhanced estrogen metabolism in such a way as to act as a dietary antiestrogenic supplement and in this way may decrease the likelihood of women to develop TPD. DIM has other hormone balancing properties and can contribute to more balanced hormones. -This more beneficial hormone balance can lead to a healthier metabolism The hormonal balance influence of DIM also positively impacts testosterone. For men, this estrogen metabolism has the added benefit of freeing up testosterone in the body. Free testosterone is important for mood, energy and labido. References: 1. Approximately mid-cycle, 24–36 hours after the luteinizing hormone (LH) surges, the dominant follicle releases an ovocyte, in an event called ovulation. After ovulation, the ovocyte only lives for 24 hours or less without fertilization while the remains of the dominant follicle in the ovary become a corpus luteum; this body has a primary function of producing large amounts of progesterone. Under the influence of progesterone, the uterine liningchanges to prepare for potential implantationof an embryo to establish a pregnancy. If implantation does not occur within approximately two weeks, the corpus luteum will involute, causing a sharp drop in levels of both progesterone and estrogen. The hormone drop causes the uterus to shed its lining in a process termed menstruation.
