Homemade 18650 Lithium Ion 12.6V 3,000mah Battery pack w/BMS

This is my homemade experiment building a 12.6VDC 3,000mah battery pack that I made from scratch with soldering iron and other simple tools. I built this pack to add capacity to my LED setup on my road bike. Be advised that once you complete your soldered connections to the BMS board, you will NOT read voltage on the P+ and P- terminals. You need to connect an external 12.6VDC source to the P+ and P- pads to "activate" the board and allow the voltage to pass through to these pads. I simply connected the pack to my battery charger and activated it that way very quickly. The 3S balance harness I made will allow me to balance each cell individually. THis is easily soldered into place on top of the respective pads on the BMS. *CORRECTION* at the 4 minute 30 second mark I say that the current is being shared between the cells. It is not being shared and each cell receives the full current. Sorry for the mistake. I test a BMS and what happens when applying voltage through a BMS into a 3 cell lithium ion 18650 battery pack connected in series. This can give a nice rechargeable 12v battery pack but does the BMS recharge the lithium batteries properly and safely? Website: www.mtechshow.com

I have been asked about how I charge my Li-ion battery pack before. I made a video on that subject and put simply, I use a hobby balance charger. Using BMS or Battery Management System boards has come up in the comments. In this video I do some basic testing of a couple that I bought on Amazon. Now to be fair the red one is advertised as a protection board not a proper BMS and as a protection board it does an OK job. The second one, however, was advertised as a BMS though I would classify it as a protection board. I look at using a BMS and the problems with that approach as well as thing to consider and how to address some of the problems while working out a better, safer and cheaper solution. Some people like to make their own lithium ion battery packs out of old laptop cells or whatever, but charging them can be a confusing task. This is the cheapest, safest, and most efficient way I've found to charge them. It does this by constantly monitoring every cell in the battery pack and calculating exactly how much current can safely go in (source, charge) and come out (load, discharge) of the battery pack without damaging it. These calculated current limits are then sent to the source (typically a battery charger) and load (motor controller, power inverter, etc), which are responsible for respecting these limits. It calculates the State of Charge (the amount of energy remaining in the battery) by tracking how much energy goes in and out of the battery pack and by monitoring cell voltages. This value can be thought of as a fuel gauge indicating how much battery power is left in the pack. It monitors the health and safety of the battery pack by constantly checking for shorts, loose connections, breakdowns in wire insulation, and weak or defective battery cells that need to be replaced. There are also secondary functions that the BMS performs: Balances all the cells in the battery pack by intelligently bleeding off excess energy from cells that are charged more than others. This provides the maximum amount of usable energy (capacity) from the battery pack since the pack is only as strong as the weakest cell. Monitors the temperature of the battery pack and controls a battery fan to regulate the temperature of the pack. Additionally, it constantly monitors the output of the fan to make sure it is working properly. Provides real-time information and values to other devices such as motor controllers, chargers, displays and data loggers using several different methods (CANBUS, analog outputs, and digital outputs). Stores error codes and comprehensive diagnostic information to aide in fixing problems with the battery pack should any issues arise.

I used a BMS charge and current protection module with 4 serial connections. This module only used 3 serial connections. When overcurrent is drawn, the module is shutting itself down and protecting the battery. I used a 3.7 volt battery with 18650. This battery is 4.2 volts at full charge. With this calculation, the current required for charging is 12.6 volts. Each new series should be connected to 4.2 volts more charging current on the connected battery. The video was successful, the drill works fine. I hope you will like it. Materials I use in Videography: 18650 laptop batteries, soldering machine, nickel plate, copper cable, solder wire, solder paste, pliers, cable stripper, power supply, rechargeable hand drill drill (cordless drill), electric tapes, fireproof tape, jst connector, BMS charge module ++++++ Bataryası tamamen bitmiş 14.4 voltluk bir şarjlı matkaba yeni batarya yaptım. 4 seri bağlantılı bir BMS şarj ve akım koruma modülünü kullandım. Bu modülün sadece 3 seri bağlantısından yararlandım. Aşırı akım çekildiğinde modül kendini kapatıyor pilleri koruyor. 18650 olan 3,7 voltluk pilleri kullandım. Bu piller tam şarjda 4,2 volt. Drill/ screwdriver battery rebuild (repair) to 18650 lithium ion batteries. Parts: Battery holder for 18650 size batteries 3x Sony VTC4 18650 2100mAh 30A batteries BMS to control charge/ discharge Original charger can be used for charging. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Converted old drill battery to lion 18650 elements. Decided to use battery holder for 3x 18650 elements to avoid spot welding of batteries. Added BMS to control charge/ discharge, so original charger cam be used for charging. Battery pack case was too small to fit battery holder with BMS, so front of case was cut off and then battery holder secured with electrical tape - not nicest solution but works well.

Current flooded lead acid 660 amp hour house battery bank on "Catmantoo" has reached its end of life. I had been considering upgrading to Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) for a while. As it was just before my January cruise I had to make a decision - Replace with Lead Acid or up grade if there was time. Fortunately I found Cameron from Trans Marine Pro (transmarinepro.co.nz) who was only 1 hour away based in Opua, Bay of Islands (NZ). He could supply & fit including the needed Battery Monitoring System (BMS) in the time frame. He is also very knowledgeable with an excellent reputation (I have my networks to call upon). With some effort on his part the 400 Amp Hour LiFePO4 system was installed despite "Catmantoo" being on her somewhat rough mooring. This winter will need instillation of upgraded battery cables, separating wiring into a Charging and a Supply Bus, instillation of External alternator charge controllers (once the Volvos are out of warranty), and a lithium compatible solar controller (not possible now due to time constraints). But Cameron got me sorted for January with a conservative set up. Should have Amp Hours to burn and a long lasting system. Could you do it yourself? - Possibly, but would need a lot of research, still with numerous pitfalls and high likelihood of destroying cells. There are expensive total packages such as Mastervolt, but one has to use all their equipment if looking at Pug & Play. There are cheaper BMS options than the one I settled on, but less adaptable. Do not just buy a LiFePO4 battery and drop it in without a BMS (as cells will get out of balance) - good luck with the warranty on that!

How to build a lithium ion electric bike battery pack from recovered used laptop batteries. Save hundreds of dollars by salvaging 18650 li-ion cells from used or even dead laptop batteries bought off eBay. My pack is 24 volt 20AH which should hopefully provide a 30-45 mile range per charge on my ebike (and cost less than $150 dollars). In the video I show you how to calculate the capacity, then wire and test the completed battery. UPDATE: The battery had a total capacity of 19aH. The groups of cells were slightly out of balance (3.3v, 2.5v, 2.9v, 2.5v, 3.1v, 2.9v) so I could rearrange some cells and get a few extra miles, but I'm happy enough with the results. Lightharvest Solar has officially entered the age of LITHIUM, and we're never going back. We just decommissioned our huge, trusty, 650 pound Lead Acid battery bank that powered our off-grid showroom, and replaced it with a lithium bank. Made with 4 CALB CA180FI, 3.2 Volt, 180 AH Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) cells http://www.lightharvestsolar.com/catalog/item/8735074/10310342.htm, Wired in series, it makes a "12 Volt" battery which weighs about 55 pounds. Absolutely incredible performance, particularly with regard to discharge rate (360 Amps for the CA180FI, which seems to be about 6 times better than AGM batteries. That's the magic with these, such a high discharge rate allows us to power bigger loads with a much smaller, lighter, battery, plus get a lifespan 4-5 times longer. The significance of this, with regard to off-grid power systems, cannot be understated. There are other enormous advntages, the biggest being that they are very light so if you are in a RV, you now can enjoy many of life's electrically powered pleasures that were impossible before, think microwave, coffee pot, toaster, hair dryer, hot plate, etc.. If you have the solar panels to recharge it, even air conditioning should be possible. This is going to be big, very big! -PLEASE NOTE THIS PACK DOES NOT HAVE A BATTERY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM, DO NOT DO THIS! We are doing a test and monitoring the cells closely for an out of balance condition. ALWAYS USE A BMS.
