Yes, cutting calories can provide short term results in which you lose 5 to 10 lbs, but as your body adjusts to the calorie reduction your metabolism begins to plummet and you lose the all-important lean muscle tissue. Let's imagine your body needs 2500 calories each day. By only giving it 2000 calories per day, you’re burning off 500 calories. After 7 days, this should come to 3500 calories also considered to be the amount of calories in 1lbs of body fat. If you do a more drastic cut by eating 1500 calories, you should, in theory, lose 2lbs of fat. There are 3 major flaws with this approach. 1) As you lose weight, you lose muscle. Especially if you’re not doing a strength training program. Most people do cardio to lose weight and this can actually speed up muscle catabolism. Muscle makes you look and feel sexy. It gives you the curves that make you beautiful. Not only do they boost your sex appeal but they are also a highly metabolic tissue that helps to burn calories. 2) When you focus on calorie reduction only, you’re decreasing your metabolic rate because you’re reducing the amount of muscle you have. When you lose 10lbs, you lose some muscle and some fat. But then, when you bounce back from this unsustainable diet, you reach your original weight but now have less muscle which means a reduction in your metabolism. Also, calorie restriction sends a signal to your body that it must decrease its metabolism in order to conserve energy sending it into a fat storing mode. 3) Toxins are rarely discussed but should have high priority when losing fat. Fat stores toxins that the body doesn’t or cannot detoxify. If you lose a large amount of fat quickly, your liver will be overloaded if you don’t provide it with the proper enzymes, minerals, and vitamins that it needs to run detox pathways. We're going to talk about hair loss in women. Not so much in men. I'll talk about that another time. Hair loss can occur for many different kinds of reasons, but some of the primary reasons I see with women will be hormonal problems. Different hormones are involved when it comes to losing the hair and it also depends on the cause, of course. The cause is something we need to look at very carefully. How old are you when you lose your hair? Are you a younger woman? Are you a woman who has just had a baby? Are you perimenopausal, menopausal or are you postmenopausal? Estrogen, testosterone and progesterone are very, very important hormones when it comes to hair, maintaining good hair. Hair loss in many cases can be attributed to an imbalance of one of these hormones. Thyroid hormones also play a very important role when it comes to maintaining good hair. Many women who have overactive or underactive thyroid can have a lot of hair loss. This can often be found on the face, around the edges of the eyebrows, pubic hair, head hair. Older women 60 plus when they start losing hair or getting balding around the top here, I start looking at testosterone and estrogen levels. I find those to be very important. When it comes to pregnancy, many women develop hair loss around pregnancy. They can brittle nails or hair problems. Many different issues can occur. If we look at the hormone, progesterone, for example. It's very high during pregnancy. Extremely high. But when you give birth of the placenta, the levels can drop from very high to very low over night. Progesterone is a critical one for hair loss, particularly pregnancy. That's an interesting one I'll explain to you a little bit. When you have the high level of progesterone during pregnancy, it makes you feel really good about yourself. Progesterone is a very important hormone or what I call the "feel good" hormone for women. Progesterone helps to stop anxiety. It's a very strong anti-inflammatory as well, so it stops pain in their body. If you think about this big baby, this big lump here in front of you growing, it's going to put a lot of pressure on your lower back and your hips on the ligaments and muscles and the whole pelvic region. That's got to hurt like crap. Progesterone being 500 times higher even more when you're in that stage of pregnancy, then when you're not pregnant, it's very important because it's going to stop all that pain. But also remember, I may have mentioned in a previous video that the first drugs that were designed for anxiety were based on the molecule progesterone. We also know progesterone is very important to stop anxiety. This explains why many women who give birth, the placenta's gone, progesterone plummets to zero just about. It can take a while for them to ovulate again because progesterone comes up again with ovulation. If they haven't got sufficient progesterone in their body, they're going feel pain. They're going to be anxious. Then they've got a crying baby and that can really add to the stress. Adrenal glands make progesterone as well. Ovaries make it and the adrenals make it. In fact, the ovaries help to produce the sex hormones, estrogen, and progesterone. What I'm trying to say is hormones need checking out when you've got hair loss. Saliva is a good way to do it. There's a test I often do now with many patients called the DUTCH, dried urine test comprehensive hormones, or DUTCH test. That test can be done on women who have got their period or it can also be done with big advantage when women are going through the change, perimenopause or menopause or postmenopause. It's often a good time to assess the hormones to see what the heck is going on. If you're noticing things like anxiety, irritability, hair loss, memory loss, accelerated aging, vaginal dryness, not interested in sex at all, all that kind of stuff. Many of these symptoms will often be together and often hair loss is one of the big annoying symptoms. Then get the hormones assessed. Let's see what the heck is going on and try to get some balance back in the hormones again. It can make a big difference in your life. Thyroid is a big one. If the thyroid is underactive or overactive. Testing for thyroid stimulating hormone or TSH testing is a very good thing to do. Check your body basal temperature. Basal temperature testing can help. It's not really the main test I would recommend. If you're basal temperature is consistently below 36 centigrade for many days in a row away from your period, then you could well have hypothyroidism, especially if your thyroid stimulating hormone or TSH level is high, then you need to act on that. There's many ways to assess thyroid.
