How to Get the Most out of Vitamin Supplements- Thomas DeLauer: When should you take your vitamins? To learn more about how I can help you, head to http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com Many factors play a role on how available vitamins and supplements are when you take them. Fat-Soluble Vitamins: Vitamins A, D, E and K- These are stored in the liver and fat stores in your body, so you do not need to consume these every day. They are easy to get from food as they are not easily broken down by heat when cooking. These are the most important vitamins to eat with food, as the name implies, they are only absorbed and used by the body in the presence of fat. These vitamins dissolve in fat and are then delivered to the bloodstream for use in the body. Not much fat is needed, but if taking a supplement, or even eating fruits and veggies, but sure to have some fat added. If you make a healthy smoothie, add some almond butter or you favorite oil, such as macadamia nut oil. When eating salads, do not use fat-free salad dressings! Olive oil and lemon juice are great options. Be careful if you supplement these vitamins and be sure to check with your doctor if you feel you may need to do so. These vitamins are only needed in small quantities and can build up to a dangerous level if too many are taken. Vitamin D is the main fat-soluble vitamin in the US where deficiencies are common. This is due to inadequate exposure to sunlight. Fortified foods and supplements can help. Try to obtain 5-15 minutes of direct sunlight twice per week to avoid a deficiency, and if this is not possible then talk to your doctor about supplementation. Water-Soluble Vitamins: Vitamin C and B-complex vitamins are water soluble vitamins that you need to be sure to include in your diet daily. Unlike fat-soluble vitamins, these vitamins are not stored in your adipose tissue or liver and are in essence washed from your body daily. Food storage and preparation are important when making sure to get sufficient quantities of these vitamins. Deficiencies are uncommon, however vegans do not have a natural source of vitamin B12 and usually need to supplement. While deficiencies are not common, it is still important to consume daily for bodily functioning. As these vitamins dissolve in water, you do not need to take these with foods, although you can if you want to. Minerals: Calcium and Magnesium (2,4) - These are best taken with food and good to take at night. Calcium is linked to improved sleep due to its muscle relaxing abilities and magnesium has calming effects on the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. Zinc (2,4) - Take with or after meals to avoid stomach upset. Do not take with dairy as calcium hampers absorption. Also avoid taking with iron as large quantities of iron can also hurt your body’s ability to absorb zinc. Avoid taking excess zinc, which can lead to anemia through suppression of copper absorption. Iron (4) - Best to take on an empty stomach. Avoid taking with zinc, calcium and vitamin E as these can decrease absorption. If you have a sensitive stomach you may not do well when taking iron on an empty stomach. If so, take with a light meal. Probiotics (4) - Best to take 30 minutes before a meal as this is when digestive enzymes, bile salts and stomach acid are at low levels. These levels peak after a meal, so this is the worst time to take a probiotic. Fiber (2) - Be sure to separate taking fiber from other nutritional supplements as fiber can hamper mineral absorption. Fish Oil (4) – Fish Oil is best to take with food and with your multivitamin, or other fat-soluble vitamins, if you take them. The fat in the food that you eat can help to aid in digestion and absorption. As fats take a long time for your body to digest, it is best not to take fish oil pills or eat a fatty meal pre-workout. This can cause digestive upset. Multivitamins: As these contain both water- and fat-soluble vitamins, take with plenty of water and some food with fat in it, but try not to take with dairy as this can reduce your absorption of zinc. We’ve Decided to Bust the Most Common Sun Protection Myths Out There We all love the sun, but what a pity it doesn’t actually love us back! Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the US. As of today, 1 in 5 Americans will get skin cancer in the future. This statistic is dreadful, and it’s mostly due to the ozone layer’s depletion. The number of holes in the ozone layer is constantly increasing, allowing too many ultraviolet rays to touch the surface of our planet, which leads to a fast growth of skin cancer cases. Here at Health is Wealth, we want to debunk some of the most common and harmful myths concerning sunscreen and its usage so that you can be safe from the sun at all times. The A-B-Cs of UV There are 3 types of sun rays: type A (UVA), type B (UVB) and type С (UVC). UVA rays are the most widespread and around 95% of them reach the surface of the earth regardless of weather conditions or the climatic zone. They penetrate through clouds and windows and reach our skin deeply. Along with a tan, they bring us free radical development which is one of the main reasons for aging. UVB rays are more powerful but less harmful. They have a medium wavelength and are mostly absorbed by clouds and the ozone layer. These rays are considered to be the most damaging to our epidermis. UVB rays are active from 10 AM to 4 PM and result in sunburns, cell mutations, and skin cancer down the line. Luckily, they can’t travel through windows. UVC rays don’t reach the earth at all because the atmosphere serves as a filter on their way in. 1. SPF math SPF, otherwise known as sun protection factor, is the measurement of a sunscreen’s ability to prevent UVB rays from damaging the skin. Most of us have heard that SPF 30 gives twice the protection of SPF 15. This isn’t true. SPF 15 filters about 93% of UVB rays, SPF 30 filters approximately 97%, and SPF 50 combats 98% of sun rays. The difference may seem insignificant, and you might consider going for a lower SPF (especially when you see the price). But if you’ve had skin cancer in the past or are extremely light-sensitive, a higher percentage of SPF will do the trick. “If I apply my regular moisturizer with SPF 15, then some foundation with SPF 30 and finish it with a powder of SPF 25, I’ll end up with SPF 70 on my face, and that’s good!” While you may say this to yourself, it doesn’t actually work like that either, although this equation does make sense mathematically. SPF in cosmetic products doesn’t sum up. What you’ll end up with is the highest factor of working SPF regardless of how many layers you have on your face. 2. “It’s cloudy outside — let’s ditch sunscreen!” Please don’t ever ditch sunscreen if you’re spending the day outside! Why not? Because up to 80% of the sun’s rays get through the clouds and reach the surface of the earth. What’s more, is UVA rays are active all year round, and they are much more dangerous than UVB rays which are only active from March to October. This common belief often results in the most severe sunburns, as people tend to carelessly spend the whole day outside without sunscreen when it’s gloomy outside. A cloudy day at the beach may seem like a better option for tanning as it’s not as hot, but make sure to apply sunscreen anyway. PLEASE READ!! Weeks 18 thru 20 - Iron Infusion, Vitamin D, Fatigue and Hair Loss | By: What Chelsea Eats Hi Y'all, Welcome to What Chelsea Eats! I am so sorry for my hiatus. In this video I am going to tell you all about it. I have been continuing experiencing extreme fatigue - Mix of vitamin d and iron deficiencies. Not enough energy or mental focus to shoot or edit videos. I went on a trip to San Francisco - Business and Pleasure. I do have footage that I will be putting together to share with you some of the things that I did while I was there. I didn't do nearly as much as I would have liked because of the way I was feeling. Hair loss this week was even worse. My eating has not been the best over these last few weeks. I didn't really feel like cooking much. Most of what I did is lay around and do nothing. Iron Infusions yesterday - 7 1/2 hours long, mix was water, salt, sugar and iron - so I am swollen, I slept the whole day because they gave me 50 mg of Benadryl in case of an allergic reaction and 500 mg of Tylenol in case of fever. I feel much better today. This is the first day in a long time that I have felt like exercising and actually working. The iron infusion helped. I will see in 30 days where my levels are and they will tell me whether or not I will need to have another infusion. My gut says I will probably need 1 more. Continuing to take vitamin d. I take 10,000 iu's per day and some days I take 15.000 iu's. I will have it checked in 30 days as well. I will give you a weight in update next week. Sorry I have been gone so long. I missed you. Babies who are bottle-fed standard cow's milk or soy milk formula or any of the standardized formulas, actually, they are all supplemented with vitamins, so you do not need to give a baby who is on formula vitamins. That being said, some parents do believe in vitamins, and they like to give supplements. Vitamins for children do not cause harm if used in a small dosage, like the recommended child dosage that's over the counter. After age one, the baby can take the liquid drops. There are certain name brands, but it's a children multi-vitamin that's over the counter. If your doctor recommends that your baby needs iron, you might give a vitamin supplemented with iron as well. At four months, sometimes babies need more iron, especially babies who are not taking solids yet. So at four months, some doctors recommend Vitamin D drops with iron or a multi-vitamin with iron for your baby. Those are not written with a prescription, but you should discuss with your doctor what vitamins your baby needs or does not need. In addition, in different states and different localities, some of the water is fluorinated and some is not, so you need to find out if the water in your child's neighborhood is fluorinated or if you need to give your child a fluoride supplement. In New York City, the water has fluoride, so we do not give our children fluoride in the drops because that would be excess fluoride, and it would cause staining of the teeth. The benefits of tanning beds over vitamin d supplements and food sources.
This vid is for my friend Mat and everyone else who doesn't want to supplement with vitamin d in the winter time and rather get from UV light, which is most optimal source of vitamin d. Now I been using tanning beds for over 8 years. And I love it. It makes me feels good, especially in the winter the heat, decreases the winter blues with the light, and most importantly increases vitamin d, which helps with the bone health, increase immunity, and actually prevents some forms cancer. Also, getting vitamin d from UV has been shown to be better than supplements and food sources, which there isn't many of them..that aren't really appealing flsh liver, blood, guts, and eggs....mushrooms...then there is milk, which they supplement it in there ....and the reason why UV it is better: 1. you get more vitamin d. 2. There is no over dose of vitamin d with UV light. Just recently a popular health guru, Gary Nulls (http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2010/04/28/Health-guru-sues-over-Vitamin-D-overdose/UPI-27541272476523/), almost died excess of vitamin d. 3. You get to store it longer I go 1-2 times a week in the winter time for a half a session, which is about 8 minutes. And this is what a Dermatologist by the name of Dr. Michael F. Holick recommends, who wrote a book called UV Advantage...talking about the benefits of UV light and tanning beds. 1. You want to go to a tanning salon that uses low pressure beds (mimics natural sunlights) -95% UVA and 5% UVB -History behind tanning beds, when they first came out they were UVB (insurance policy) then UVA now it's a mix 2. You don't want to burn, you want to sun-kissed not sun burnt 3. You don't need to use lotion or oils.....these help to get a more even, deeper, and darker tan. Which they do this by helping to flatten out the skin so increases more surface area so the UV 4. Eat a low fat diet, lycopene by 45% sunburn, broccoli, grapes....we were meant to eat fruit and be in the sun 5. Also, you want to make sure the place you go to is clean and wear the safety eyewear. 6. I always go naked. Increases the total amount of vitamin d you get overall and I heard if you expose your genitals to UV increase testostorone, which in return increase strength. Maybe that's the big secret with all my all strength feats is that I tan my balls. Hopefully that answered everything you wanted to know about tanning. Lightening (or removing dye) with Vitamin C and Shampoo
Please do not leave this product on your hair for more than an hour (actually, I'd go so far to say to not leave it on for more than 45 minutes). I've noticed over the few times that I've used this method to lighten my hair that it works best with removing dyed hair and will only lift your natural hair by maybe half a level. I've also noticed that after the 45 minute mark that the Vitamin C no longer lifts/lightens your hair color. Do understand that Vitamin C can make your hair feel straw-like if you leave it on for too long, as well as make you feel sick, and even burn your scalp. Always err on the side of caution!!! If your scalp is burning at all during this process, WASH IT OUT. Thank you, all, for your love and support. Vitamin C and Shampoo Recipe Ingredients: 50-60 pills of 1000mg Vitamin C, mashed into powder. 9ish Tablespoons of clear shampoo (I used Prell but it's probably best to use a shampoo without dyes in it) Mixing bowl A spray bottle, filled with water A plastic cap, or bag Instructions: Mix vitamin C and shampoo If you feel the mixture is too thick, add another tablespoon of shampoo. Apply to damp hair. If mixture isn't spreading easily and/or you've run out of mixture, spray more water onto hair and continue to lather in. Once hair is saturated with the mixture, cover with a plastic cap (or bag) and leave for 30-60 minutes. Rinse out, wash with shampoo, and deep condition as this will make your hair dry. Vitamin D is a group of fat-soluble secosteroids responsible for enhancing intestinal absorption of calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphate and zinc. In humans, the most important compounds in this group are vitamin D3 (also known as cholecalciferol) and vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol).[1] Cholecalciferol and ergocalciferol can be ingested from the diet and from supplements.[1][2][3] The body can also synthesize vitamin D (specifically cholecalciferol) in the skin, from cholesterol, when sun exposure is adequate (hence its nickname, the "sunshine vitamin"). Although vitamin D is commonly called a vitamin, it is not actually an essential dietary vitamin in the strict sense, as it can be synthesized in adequate amounts by most mammals exposed to sunlight. A substance is only classified as an essential vitamin when it cannot be synthesized in sufficient quantities by an organism, and must be obtained from its diet. In common with other compounds commonly called vitamins, vitamin D was nevertheless discovered in an effort to find the dietary substance lacking in a disease, namely rickets, the childhood form of osteomalacia.[4] Additionally, like other compounds called vitamins, in the developed world, vitamin D is added to staple foods, such as milk, to avoid disease due to deficiency. Vitamin K is a group of structurally similar, fat-soluble vitamins that the human body needs for post-translational modification of certain proteins required for blood coagulation, and in metabolic pathways in bone and other tissue. They are 2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone (3-) derivatives. This group of vitamins includes two natural vitamers: vitamin K1 and vitamin K2.[1] Vitamin K1, also known as phylloquinone, phytomenadione, or phytonadione, is synthesized by plants, and is found in highest amounts in green leafy vegetables because it is directly involved in photosynthesis. It may be thought of as the "plant form" of vitamin K. It is active in animals and may perform the classic functions of vitamin K in animals, including its activity in the production of blood-clotting proteins. Animals may also convert it to vitamin K2. Vitamin K2, the main storage form in animals, has several subtypes, which differ in isoprenoid chain length. These vitamin K2 homologues are called menaquinones, and are characterized by the number of isoprenoid residues in their side chains. Menaquinones are abbreviated MK-n, where M stands for menaquinone, the K stands for vitamin K, and the n represents the number of isoprenoid side chain residues. For example, menaquinone-4 (abbreviated MK-4) has four isoprene residues in its side chain. Menaquinone-4 (also known as menatetrenone from its four isoprene residues) is the most common type of vitamin K2 in animal products since MK-4 is normally synthesized from vitamin K1 in certain animal tissues (arterial walls, pancreas, and testes) by replacement of the phytyl tail with an unsaturated geranylgeranyl tail containing four isoprene units, thus yielding menaquinone-4. film by Andria Millie A music town, Seattle is first noted for the jazz movement of the 50's bringing musicians to play and collaborate, thus conributing to the refined sound and strong musicianship of the Northwest. Growing up with father, Herman Brown, Motown funk musician, Vitamin D was exposed to records, rehearsal and many talented artists early on. He went on to attend Garfield High School, renowned for its extensive jazz program. With an early interest in music production and innovative by nature, Vitamin D began piecing together mix tapes, following fresh hip hop announced by local leader Mr.Supreme out of a record store in South Seattle called Music Menu. He formed the group Ghetto Children with BSelf, putting on shows at the Langston Hughes Cultural Arts Center. Vitamin D began to let it be known that he would lead in next wave of music to come out of Seattle that was hip hop. Now pioneer producer, Vitamin D makes beats and engineers most of what comes out locally such as records by Gabriel Teodros, Khingz, Common Market, Choklate, Toni Hill, Darrius Wilrich, Blue Scholars and Jake One (Vita's counterpart throughout). Not to mention, he is renowned for his production on solo albums for mega west coast leaders, Gift of Gab and Abstract Rude. Artists worldwide are taking notice and requesting contribution on their albums. Recognizing the power in the institutions and idols that helped pave the way for him, he wanted to give back to the community. Out of The Pharmacy (studio in South Seattle) as a mentor himself, Vitamin D was aware of the young local producers that would benefit from a format that showcased their skills. He started an original project in 2004 called Big Tune, a producer battle working much like emcee or dj battles (a style borrowed from Jamaican streets) where the winner of the hottest sound is determined by the people. Vitamin D was teaching at the Red Bull Music Academy at the time. Catching the attention of such a major sponsor, he was able to take Big Tune to other cities on the west coast, nationwide, and now internationally. Taking it one step further, he makes the most of his presence in cities Big Tune travels to by visiting community centers, holding workshops and talking to the kids about their potential futures doing what they love, what he loves, expressing themselves through music. Vitamin D is a true leader of our time.
