Hidden Health Hazards: Common medications can poison dogs

03:08
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - It's a big season for adoptions for the SPCA Cincinnati. A lot of people get new pets for Christmas and many of those are lucky to find a good home. But there’s a new warning if people do have a new pet about a hidden danger in people’s homes that’s on the rise. It has the potential to poison a puppy. It's hard not to notice how much Rusty, a 2-year-old terrier mix up for adoption, wants to explore every inch of a home he hasn't been inside before. Some of the leftover holiday foods, plants, and especially dark chocolate needed to be placed on top of a table out of Rusty's reach. In addition to many common foods that either sit out in the kitchen or maybe people use when baking, there's something else of new concern that could harm pets. It is cold and flu season and about a third of problems with pets and what they ingest can actually come from what people need to take for colds and flus. Mike Retzlaff of the SPCA said, “That’s prescription medications to over the counter medications.” Retzlaff said the common medications people simply set by when they’re sick are often very accessible to new puppy's and pets. “Ibuprofen, any kind of sinus medication can speed up the heart rate of the dog and could put them in peril if they consume large amounts of it. It's everywhere, you can put medication on the table next to the couch, and of course the larger the dog, the more likely it is to get to the medication. People drop medications on the floor,” said Retzlaff. The Centers for Disease Control said seven out of ten Americans now take at least one medication and some of the most common were likely to poison a puppy. Retzlaff warned, “Anything related to the heart, blood thinners, something like that, especially dangerous for dogs.”

Tony Robbins: The PHILOSOPHY of Living A Happy Life ( Tony Robbins Meditation )

45:55
While everyone is in pursuit of happiness, yet very few people understand that Happiness is already all around us. Its only matter of training our brain through simple skills to feel the Happiness. Below PHILOSOPHY is presented for Easy-to-Understand and Easy-to-Practice in order to acquire immense Happiness, peace of mind and tranquility. While it take a little time to practice the below recommendations but trust me once your body, mind and soul are trained enough to live by these rules, nobody on earth will be able to stop the showers of ultimate happiness. Live in Present moment. Past steals your peace of mind. Don’t worry too much about future, the best is yet to come. Enjoy whatever positive is happening around you. Health is TOP Priority. 30 minutes daily exercise and healthy diet should never be compromised. Healthy body ensure healthy heart and mind. One day you will regret for not giving attention to your body. Ignite happiness in others. The level of contentment and satisfaction achieved through making others happy by resolving someone's problem is priceless. Make difference even if you have $1 to spend and generate ripples of happiness. Love unconditionally. Love people and use things, not vice versa. Expect nothing in return and you will never be disappointed. Stay honest with your loved ones. One of the greatest advantages of telling the truth is that you don’t have to remember what you said. Develop Trust through politeness, straight forwardness, honesty, care and consistent behavior. Open to Learning is vital for your success and happiness. Learning gives you exposure to see things from different perspective. Learn through observation, reading, trainings and spending time with wise people. Your today should be better than yesterday else you are in loss. Mistakes are valuable as long as you learn from them. Weekly Self Audit for all domains of life such as Religious, financial, educational, familial, emotional, professional, social and physical must be done for continuous improvement. People who write their goal are 60% more likely to achieve so write down current issues and your goals in each of the domains mentioned above. Optimistic people live less-stressful life. Find out positive in every problem you face. For weak people, problems create more problems, for better people problems are challenges to handle, for optimists and courageous people, problems are opportunities to grow. So be an optimist and solution-oriented person. Don’t delay things. Now is the moment to act. No procrastination. Become "Professor Now" instead of "Mr. Later". Delaying things will keep piling up clutter in your brain adding stress to your life. People having high sense of gratitude are the most happy people. There are billions of people poorer than you. There are hundreds of complicated diseases which you don’t have. Be thankful for each of your organ. When your head is on the pillow and the day is almost done, Count God's blessings, count them one by one. Family blessings, economical, physical, mental, educational, professional and so on. Be adaptable to new situations. Elastic people are welcomed in the society and stubborn people develop more stress and produce more complications. Respect the opinion of others and be open to accept the Change. Remember, no one is in-charge of your happiness except you so adjust yourself to ever changing situations in life. Convince people with logic or get convinced. There is no point of keeping brawls for longer duration, impacting your brain, body and emotions.

Christopher Bollas: Mental Pain

01:33:25
Christopher Bollas, the most influential psychoanalyst writing in English today, asserts that mental life is innately hazardous. The steps we take through childhood are marked by mentally painful episodes that constitute ordinary breakdowns in the self. Adolescence stands as the most painful such period, during which some of the major disturbances of self arise, including anorexia, schizophrenia, bipolarity, and sociopathy. Rather than approaching mental pain as a condition to be ignored, minimized, or suppressed through medication, Bollas examines it as a constitutive element of human psychic development.
Ep 59 Costochondritis Chest Pain

07:55
Source: https://www.spreaker.com/user/simplehealthradio/ep-59-costochondritis-chest-pain Contributors: Michael Yu and Dr. Emran of Simple Health Radio On this episode of Simple Health Radio, Dr. Emran recalls a case involving a young man named “Zack”. Zack is a healthy 26-year-old African American male who showed up at the ER with a 1-week history of severe chest pain. Zack works as a high school gym teacher and lives an active lifestyle. His family had no history of heart problems and he himself had no medical issues. Zack could not recall any injuries that may have caused the chest pain and did not experience any physical trauma, such as a car accident. Despite all this, the chest pain was bothering Zack so much that he could not sleep, go to work, or even get dressed in the morning. Zack told Dr. Emran that the pain got worse with sneezing and described it as “sharp” and “shooting”. Zack’s initial physical examinations didn’t produce any alarming results: his lungs were clear, he had no fever or a cough, and he was able to talk in a full sentence. However, Dr. Emran did note that Zack’s chest was tender over certain areas. Dr. Emran continued with a chest x-ray, only to find that Zack’s chest seemed completely healthy; there were no signs of broken ribs or infections. An EKG (electrocardiogram) was then used to look at Zack’s heart rhythm, which was also completely normal. After a few more rounds of tests on Zack’s electrolytes, blood sugar, and immune function, there was still no cause that could be identified. Dr. Emran took another look at Zack’s chest and found that his pain was reproducible, meaning that physically pressing on his chest would cause the pain to become worse. With this information, Dr. Emran concluded that Zack had costochondritis. The chest and ribcage are an important part of the body. Humans have 12 ribs on each side. Some ribs are complete, meaning they go from the spine and wrap around to the sternum. The sternum is the breastbone in the middle of the chest which is made of cartilage and is the most flexible part of the chest. Costochondritis occurs whenever the ribs connecting to the sternum become inflamed as a result of physical exertion, infection, or injury. Dr. Emran explains that Zack’s costochondritis may have been caused by a change in his physical routine or a mild infection. Every year in the U.S., more than 600,000 cases of costochondritis are diagnosed, especially among healthy adults and teenagers. Dr. Emran tells us that most people who have chest pain often avoid visiting the ER. Instead, they take over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol and Advil to wait out the pain. Sometimes, the chest pain goes away, but in Zack’s case, the pain simply became worse. Dr. Emran decided to treat Zack with a combination of medications. Zack was offered prescription NSAIDs, steroids, and a short course of Tylenol with Codeine. NSAIDs are medicines that help reduce swelling and inflammation without causing drowsiness. The steroids also help reduce inflammation, but with a stronger effect. Before the inflammation is reduced,  the Tylenol and Codeine would help Zack sleep more soundly. The prescriptions worked and after several days, Zack was almost pain-free. He was advised to follow-up with his doctor and do some additional testing, just to be on the safe side. Costochondritis is a common cause of chest pain. If you or your family experience costochondritis, please reach out to us and provide feedback so we can educate others about this condition.   References: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/costochondritis/symptoms-causes/syc-20371175 https://www.webmd.com/pain-management/costochondritis#3 Follow Simple Health Radio on: Twitter Instagram Facebook Pinterest Spotify Itunes Spreaker   If you think you may have a medical emergency, call 911 immediately. Why I Am A Defiant Mother | Podcast | Homeopathy Works

http://joettecalabrese.com/blog/podcast/podcast-10-defiant-mother/ Listen to the podcast for reasons why mothers need to be vigilant and defiant. While raising my children, my thinking went something like this: If I was going to bring children into the world, I ought to be able to identify whether they were well or not. I put a lot of time into homemade, organic, pasture fed foods, so it seemed stupid (excuse the sophomoric word, but it’s so fitting!) to forget all that when the baby got a common illness and defer to someone with whom I fundamentally disagreed. Subways Are for Sleeping / Only Johnny Knows / Colloquy 2: A Dissertation on Love

01:29:15
Subways Are for Sleeping is a musical with a book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green and music by Jule Styne. The original Broadway production played in 1961-62. The musical was inspired by an article about subway homelessness in the March 1956 issue of Harper's and a subsequent 1957 book based on it, both by Edmund G. Love, who slept on subway trains throughout the 1950s and encountered many unique individuals. With the profits from his book, Love then embarked on a bizarre hobby: over the course of several years, he ate dinner at every restaurant listed in the Manhattan yellow pages directory, visiting them in alphabetical order. After two previews, the Broadway production, directed and choreographed by Michael Kidd, opened on December 27, 1961 at the St. James Theatre, where it ran for 205 performances. The cast included Orson Bean, Sydney Chaplin, Carol Lawrence, Gordon Connell, Grayson Hall, and Green's wife Phyllis Newman (whose costume, consisting solely of a towel, was probably Freddy Wittop's easiest design in his distinguished career), with newcomers Michael Bennett and Valerie Harper in the chorus. Subways Are for Sleeping opened to mostly negative reviews. The show already was hampered by a lack of publicity, since the New York City Transit Authority refused to post advertisements on the city's buses and in subway trains and stations for fear they would be perceived as officially sanctioning the right of vagrants to use these facilities as overnight accommodations. Producer David Merrick and press agent Harvey Sabinson decided to invite individuals with the same names as prominent theatre critics (such as Walter Kerr, Richard Watts, Jr. and Howard Taubman) to see the show and afterwards used their favorable comments in print ads. Thanks to photographs of the seven "critics" accompanying their blurbs (the well-known real Richard Watts was not African American), the ad was discovered to be a deception by a copy editor. It was pulled from most newspapers, but not before running in an early edition of the New York Herald Tribune. However, the clever publicity stunt allowed the musical to continue to run and it eventually turned a small profit. Newman won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, and nominations went to Bean for Best Featured Actor and Kidd's choreography. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subways_Are_For_Sleeping

Our Miss Brooks: Board of Education Day / Cure That Habit / Professorship at State University

01:29:12
Our Miss Brooks is an American situation comedy starring Eve Arden as a sardonic high school English teacher. It began as a radio show broadcast from 1948 to 1957. When the show was adapted to television (1952--56), it became one of the medium's earliest hits. In 1956, the sitcom was adapted for big screen in the film of the same name. Connie (Constance) Brooks (Eve Arden), an English teacher at fictional Madison High School. Osgood Conklin (Gale Gordon), blustery, gruff, crooked and unsympathetic Madison High principal, a near-constant pain to his faculty and students. (Conklin was played by Joseph Forte in the show's first episode; Gordon succeeded him for the rest of the series' run.) Occasionally Conklin would rig competitions at the school--such as that for prom queen--so that his daughter Harriet would win. Walter Denton (Richard Crenna, billed at the time as Dick Crenna), a Madison High student, well-intentioned and clumsy, with a nasally high, cracking voice, often driving Miss Brooks (his self-professed favorite teacher) to school in a broken-down jalopy. Miss Brooks' references to her own usually-in-the-shop car became one of the show's running gags. Philip Boynton (Jeff Chandler on radio, billed sometimes under his birth name Ira Grossel); Robert Rockwell on both radio and television), Madison High biology teacher, the shy and often clueless object of Miss Brooks' affections. Margaret Davis (Jane Morgan), Miss Brooks' absentminded landlady, whose two trademarks are a cat named Minerva, and a penchant for whipping up exotic and often inedible breakfasts. Harriet Conklin (Gloria McMillan), Madison High student and daughter of principal Conklin. A sometime love interest for Walter Denton, Harriet was honest and guileless with none of her father's malevolence and dishonesty. Stretch (Fabian) Snodgrass (Leonard Smith), dull-witted Madison High athletic star and Walter's best friend. Daisy Enright (Mary Jane Croft), Madison High English teacher, and a scheming professional and romantic rival to Miss Brooks. Jacques Monet (Gerald Mohr), a French teacher. Our Miss Brooks was a hit on radio from the outset; within eight months of its launch as a regular series, the show landed several honors, including four for Eve Arden, who won polls in four individual publications of the time. Arden had actually been the third choice to play the title role. Harry Ackerman, West Coast director of programming, wanted Shirley Booth for the part, but as he told historian Gerald Nachman many years later, he realized Booth was too focused on the underpaid downside of public school teaching at the time to have fun with the role. Lucille Ball was believed to have been the next choice, but she was already committed to My Favorite Husband and didn't audition. Chairman Bill Paley, who was friendly with Arden, persuaded her to audition for the part. With a slightly rewritten audition script--Osgood Conklin, for example, was originally written as a school board president but was now written as the incoming new Madison principal--Arden agreed to give the newly-revamped show a try. Produced by Larry Berns and written by director Al Lewis, Our Miss Brooks premiered on July 19, 1948. According to radio critic John Crosby, her lines were very "feline" in dialogue scenes with principal Conklin and would-be boyfriend Boynton, with sharp, witty comebacks. The interplay between the cast--blustery Conklin, nebbishy Denton, accommodating Harriet, absentminded Mrs. Davis, clueless Boynton, scheming Miss Enright--also received positive reviews. Arden won a radio listeners' poll by Radio Mirror magazine as the top ranking comedienne of 1948-49, receiving her award at the end of an Our Miss Brooks broadcast that March. "I'm certainly going to try in the coming months to merit the honor you've bestowed upon me, because I understand that if I win this two years in a row, I get to keep Mr. Boynton," she joked. But she was also a hit with the critics; a winter 1949 poll of newspaper and magazine radio editors taken by Motion Picture Daily named her the year's best radio comedienne. For its entire radio life, the show was sponsored by Colgate-Palmolive-Peet, promoting Palmolive soap, Lustre Creme shampoo and Toni hair care products. The radio series continued until 1957, a year after its television life ended. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Miss_Brooks
