Potatoes: The perfect food - John McDougall MD
Want to watch the full one-hour-plus video of Dr. McDougall's talk, The Starch Solution? If so, click here: http://www.vegsource.com/news/2010/11/the-starch-solution-every-successful-culture-was-plant-based.html Recently a Harvard study concluded that potatoes are bad for those wanting to lose weight and be healthy. But is this true and accurate? Or another example of shoddy "science?" Well, if we are discussing French Fries, Potato Chips, and the standard versions of mashed, boiled and baked potatoes (covered with cheese, butter, bacon and sour cream) then yes, the potato looks like "bad news." However, if we are talking about the plain old baked potato (which the FAO/WHO dedicated 2008 to the potato because of its nutritional and economical value), then no, this study has no impact on that.

I only ate potatoes for two weeks
What if you ate only potatoes for two weeks? It was a wild ride! And I lost a stone (14 pounds) Video transcription: What if you only ate potatoes for two weeks? So we're actually going to Tesco right now, to get a bag of potatoes, what's the time? Late It's late It's 11 O'clock Here we go Desiree potatoes, King Edward potatoes, Baking sweet potatoes, white potatoes, Jacket potatoes, sweet potatoes, imperfect potatoes, Maris piper potatoes, baby potatoes, Rudolph potatoes, Jersey royals. Let's just deal with these... So here it is, the first potato. Copped, boiled and ready for tomorrow. And because we all want to know, here's how much I weigh. Exactly 14 stone That's 14 stone with a little bit of beer in that belly. It's currently the 16th of May 2017 and here it is. I've never felt so nervous eating a potato before So I've just got back from work and I'm feeling really rough, which is weird, I shouldn't cos I've bad days of eating before. this just feels like my body's screeming out for this like.... So I've got this baked potato going and I'm boiling tomorrow's potatoes But by the end, I'm hoping to be some sort of like potato god, you know, like some guru Get enlightened by potatoes. Oh god. I usually poop every morning at around 11 o'clock and I didn't go yesterday, it took until 12 o'clock today. That's 25 hours later! Jesus. And I feel like that bit's only going to get worse Let's talk about the Bristol stool scale. A scale from 1 to 7 to show the different types of poops you can have. Obviously, these don't endorse me This is a number 1 Then this is a 3 And then you get up to 7 The 16th I might not have gone, but on the 17th my body complained So, I don't think I'm going to eat many more boiled potatoes because they're just kind of wet and slimy. Like eating slugs all day. I'd rather just eat baked potatoes and pre-prepare them. There's a reason for this. That's Hayley, my partner of 8 years. I haven't told her yet, I'm 3 days in and she doesn't like my stupid ideas 2 weeks of only eating potatoes You're kidding me? I've done it for 2 days already so does that mean you can eat McDonald's chips? No, I can't have chips, I can only have either baked or boiled potatoes, I've got wait until I get home now That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard Matt no, I don't like these fad diets they're ridiculous It is a fad diet It isn't It's stupid, no, that's really annoyed me She was really annoyed until she realised that for two weeks she could eat great food and just watch me suffer So the next few days went fine And then I switched to sweet potatoes, everyone loves sweet potatoes, but if you bake them and eat them whole with their hard leathery skin and their weird, slimy insides. You realise. They're disgusting And then this happened These things tore me apart And the next 4 days was full of one and two's I can't even smell them. It's a potato, it shouldn't be hard. I like these normally Why is it so disgusting? That was absolutely foul I can't. I just literally can't So after that, I changed back to normal potatoes and things became a dream Things were just happening, things were so much clearer I didn't worry about what I was eating next because I knew what it'd be, so I just started getting on with it Yeah the food was boring, but I felt really good, all that until I reached it Full potato enlightenment I'm feeling just awful at the moment I got this bowl full of potatoes, I'm just feeling really like... I dunno. I don't want to say faint, even know I was. I've just got to eat more of these, maybe I'm not eating enough. I dunno. They're doing what they're supposed to be doing, filling my stomach and making me not feel hungry, but because of that, I can tell I'm just not eating enough anymore. My stomach has shrunk so much I'm not feeling very hungry. Feeling very hungry? God I can't speak That's a lot of weight Things were pretty bad I couldn't function properly anymore and me and Hayley were arguing So over my last potato, let's talk about what I've learnt Honestly, the hardest thing wasn't really the cravings, which were pretty bad at first It was just really boring And that's coming from someone who obviously is living in Britain and has everything in the world around me It made me grateful for the small foods that I didn't really like, which I've just taken for granted Because right now, I'd kill for them I just never realised the gravity of the luxury I started feeling really lethargic and I just couldn't work as well So This is my last potato How big is that shot glass? Cheers Thank god that's over This feels like a big thing, even know it isn't I'm just about to eat some cheese Oh my god

Top 10 Foods for Diabetes Control
Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases in which there are high blood sugar levels over a prolonged period. Symptoms of high blood sugar include frequent urination, increased thirst, and increased hunger. If left untreated, diabetes can cause many serious long-term complications include heart disease, stroke, chronic kidney failure, foot ulcers, and damage to the eyes. What you eat can help you to control and fight your diabetes. Research proves that making a few key changes to your diet such as eating more produce, fewer refined carbohydrates, plenty of lean protein can help in improving your blood-sugar and cuts the risk of diabetes-related complications. Certain foods are packed with nutrients that stabilise blood sugar levels, protect your heart, and even save your vision from the damaging effects of diabetes. These top 10 foods can help you in controlling Diabetes. Spinach The American Diabetes Association calls spinach a diabetes super food and recommends that you regularly include this dark green leafy non-starchy vegetable in your diet. Besides being rich in vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals, spinach possesses a low glycemic index, which means eating it will help support healthy and stable blood glucose levels. Spinach is low in carbohydrates, containing only 0.83 grams per cup. The fact that spinach contains so few carbohydrates makes it an excellent choice on a diabetes diet. Broccoli Broccoli contains a compound called sulforaphane, which triggers several anti-inflammatory processes that improve blood sugar control and protect blood vessels from the cardiovascular damage that’s often a consequence of diabetes. Olive oil Olive oil is recognized as one of the healthiest edible oils since it contains less saturated fats. It is rich in Omega 9 and Omega 3 which help maintain the flexibility of blood vessels, allowing good blood flow. Olive oil, especially extra virgin, contains tyrosol phenolic compounds such as oleuropein and oleocanthal. These compounds are nature’s most powerful anti-oxidants. Sweet potatoes Sweet potatoes are a good carbohydrate choice for diabetics. The glycemic index of sweet potatoes is a lot lower, which is better for diabetes control, according to a 2002 article in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition." Eating sweet potatoes in moderate amounts will help you keep your blood sugar levels in the healthy range even if you have diabetes. Avocados Avocados are an excellent choice for people with diabetes because they are very rich in dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals and packed with numerous health benefiting plant nutrients. Blueberries Blueberries contain both insoluble fiber (which “flushes” fat out of your system) and soluble fiber (which slows down the emptying of your stomach, and improves blood sugar control). It also contain a natural plant compound known as anthocyanins. Scientists believe these may help lower blood sugar by boosting insulin production. Tomatoes Tomatoes are an excellent source of vitamin C, vitamin A, and vitamin K. They are also a very good source of, potassium, manganese, dietary fiber, chromium, and vitamin B1. Because of their low carbohydrate content, tomatoes can play a big role in controlling blood sugar levels. The low carbohydrate content also helps lower calorie intake and can help diabetics to lose weight. Eggs Eggs are a versatile food and a great source of protein, and the American Diabetes Association considers eggs an excellent choice for people with diabetes. Cinnamon Cinnamon spice has the highest anti-oxidant strength of all the food sources in nature. Many studies show that consumption of one teaspoon cinnamon to three teaspoons a day has a positive effect on reducing blood glucose levels. It was found that the cinnamon can make your cells more sensitive to insulin. Dates Dates are a great choice for a person with diabetes as they can help control sugar cravings, and they are low on the glycemic index. The carbohydrates in dates provide instant energy, and the high fiber contained in dates is good for digestion. This sweet desert fruit is cholesterol and fat free therefore, they serve as a great snack item. Many essential disease protective minerals are also present in dates.

Heal your Pancreas Naturally with these Foods
Heal your pancreas naturally with these foods The pancreas is really the life saver in all of us. It plays a very important role for your health and well-being. It produces your insulin. If it is damaged, you will not get insulin. Without insulin, your glucose metabolism suffers. Your body cells cannot produce energy from food. Please visit The Refreshing Point Web store for Healthy Products discussed in my videos: https://www.amazon.com/shop/therefreshingpoint The pancreas plays a crucial role in digestion. When food empties from your stomach into the small intestine, it mixes with digestive enzymes from the pancreas that neutralize stomach acid, preventing damage to the intestine. These enzymes are also essential for your body to reduce inflammation caused by trauma, injury, allergens, toxins and infections. But most importantly, the pancreas produces insulin, which reduces blood sugar levels and allows your body to store food energy for future use. Eating the right foods can heal and nourish your pancreas. Foods That Heal The Pancreas Probiotic Yogurt Research finds that eating 3 servings of low fat or fat free yogurt that contains active cultures to help ease digestion, protect the pancreas and digestive system, and reduce the overall risk of pancreatic cancer. Cabbage A regular consumption of cabbage may help protect susceptible individuals against pancreatic cancer. Cabbage is loaded with vitamin C, but it also contains vitamin B6 and folate. Spinach The pancreas needs both iron and Vitamin B to function properly, and spinach has both. A pancreas that is properly nourished will be less likely to become inflamed or to be vulnerable to the onset of cancer. Licorice Licorice root is an excellent treatment for many problems with pancreas. Traditional Chinese used licorice root for thousands of years. Research even shows that this common root is loaded with an anti-inflammatory compound that reduces pain and swelling that is associated with pancreatitis. Cherries It’s really hard to eat just a handful of cherries, which is great news since the fruit is rich in antioxidants and perillyl alcohol (or POH), a compound that’s been linked to the prevention of pancreatic cancer. Garlic This is a major help for the pancreas. Garlic reduces the amount of sugar in the blood and stimulates the pancreas to produce sufficient levels of insulin. Aim to eat one to two slightly crushed cloves of garlic each day in addition to adding some to your foods. Red Reishi Mushrooms Used in China for thousands of years to restore balance inside the body, red rishi mushrooms reduce inflammation and have similar benefits of onions and garlic for pancreatic health. If are hard to find in your local grocery store, try the Asian foods section at a specialty grocery store. Sweet Potatoes Sweet potatoes along with other orange and yellow vegetables like carrots, corn and squash contain nutrients which are beneficial for the pancreas and may help prevent cancer. Other foods that also heal the Pancreas are Blueberries, Broccoli, Red Grapes, and Tomato Vegetable Soup. Because the pancreas is very easily damaged by an unhealthy diet, eating these certain food will boost its health. How to cook sweet potato
Sweet potatoes are rich in several essential nutrients like potassium, calcium, and vitamins A, C, and B-complex. All of these are important for your baby’s growing body and brain. And sweet potatoes are simple to make! Here are steps to cook sweet potato for your baby: Step 1: Wash, peel and cut your sweet potato If you’re using frozen sweet potato, you can skip this step. But if you’re using fresh sweet potato, rinse the sweet potato with water, peel it, and cut it into small chunks. Step 2: Boil the sweet potato Place the sweet potato chunks into a medium pot, cover with water and bring water to a boil. Reduce heat until the sweet potato is soft (about 15 minutes). Drain and let cool. As a tip, to speed up the cooling process you can rinse the sweet potato with cold water. Step 3: Puree or serve as a finger food For a smoother texture, you can puree the sweet potato in a blender. Add water, breast milk or infant formula and blend until it is smooth. If your baby is already enjoying soft finger foods, you can simply offer him or her bite-sized pieces of soft sweet potato. And that’s it! Enjoy! And remember, talk to your child’s pediatrician or health care provider about any questions or concerns. Sweet Potatoes VS Minute Potatoes
Here’s a tip for both general health and diabetes: sweet potatoes are a great source of calcium, potassium and vitamins A and C, while also being low in calories. Plus, white potatoes spike blood sugar, while sweet potatoes create a gradual change. Visit https://connect.bcbsok.com/health-and-wellness/m/mediagallery/71 for the full recipe!

Primitive Technology: Sweet potato patch
I built a fenced enclosure and cultivated sweet potatoes (from civilisation) and yams (from the wild) in it. I originally had a small 3X3 m garden behind the wattle and daub hut that already had some sweet potato and yam vines growing in it that were planted after the hut was built. But wallabies kept eating the leaves. So I made a wattle enclosure around it to keep them out. Wood ash was added to the soil to provide potassium and phosphorus for the growing tubers. The previous small garden was organised in rows (not seen in this video) but this was hard to water during dry weather. So I re-organised the patch into 1 meter wide mounds with pits in the centre. Vines were planted into the mounds and water poured into the centre of each mound watered the vines. So then I had a small garden with 9 mounds contained within it. I decided to enlarge the patch to fit in more mounds so I took out 2 sides of the fence and extended them by a meter each. So the patch ended up being 4X4m and contained 16 mounds. In addition to wood ash, leaf mould was added to the mounds for fertility and to reduce loss of moisture. The patch, being in the dark forest understory, received only about 2-3 hours of direct sunlight per day so the yield was disappointingly small. Nevertheless, the patch produced a few small sweet potatoes and a single larger yam. I also picked some green growing tips of the sweet potato vine that can also be eaten. I boiled the greens slightly in a pot with a hot stone and ate the leaves. I then roasted the sweet potatoes and yam in the coals of the fire. The sweet potatoes (purple fleshed tuber) taste sweet and starchy whereas the yam (white fleshed tuber) tastes similar to an ordinary potato. After eating, I took the wood ash from the fire and poured it back into the mounds that were harvested, replanted them and watered them. In future I’d plant the sweet potatoes in an area that receives much more sunlight in order to dramatically increase production. I’ve grown the same variety at home and it produces a much greater quantity and size of tubers in full sun. Wood ash also tends to increase tuber yield and so is a good use for waste ash. The sweet potato is a remarkable plant. It’s a staple food of many traditional cultures. NASA has considered it a potential crop to be grown on spaceships for long term missions. In terms of energy production it’s only 3rd behind sugar cane and cassava. It produces the most food value (a combination of edible energy and nutrition) of any crop per unit space and time. A study of Fijian farms using manual labour showed that ratio of energy put into farming vs yield of energy was 1:17 for rice and 1:60 for sweet potato. It grows on marginal soil and doesn’t require much nitrogen to grow. It takes a relatively short growth period of 3-4 months to yield. All parts of the plant can be eaten including the leaves which provide additional protein and nutrients. I grow the purple variety (because it tastes better in my opinion) but all varieties are nutritious and will stave off malnutrition. A person could potentially be nearly self-sufficient from a small plot of sweet potatoes. Note that in colder climates, regular potatoes could be grown instead of sweet potatoes. Top 10 Foods That Can Kill You
Foods that can kill you Potatoes - Potato plant poisoning occurs when someone eats the green tubers or new sprouts of the potato plant. Solanine is a dangerous nerve toxin that is produced in any green part of the potato, that includes leaves, stems, and any green part of the potato. Ackee - Ackee is a tropical fruit native to West Africa and is the national fruit of Jamaica where it is also known for its toxin content named hypoglycin A and hypoglycin B. Hypoglycin A is found in both the seeds and the arils, while hypoglycin B is found only in the seeds. These toxin compounds are responsible for causing Ackee Fruit Toxicity or Jamaican Vomiting Sickness. Bitter Almonds -Sweet almonds may be safe to eat, but bitter almonds aren't. Bitter almonds are wild almonds and contain 50 times more cyanide per kilogram than sweet almonds, according to the 2013 study in ISRN Toxicology. Eating 50 bitter almonds can be deadly. If you've been exposed to a small amount of cyanide, you may experience dizziness, headaches, nausea, vomiting, rapid breathing and rapid heart rate. Rhubarb Leaves - Rhubarb leaves contain a poison, oxalic acid which is very harmful for any human body. Its stalks are only the eatable part which is used in many desserts or as an ingredients in many sweet dishes. If you consume its leaves then you may feel burning sensation in your mouth and throat, as well as difficulty breathing. Castor Beans - Castor beans contain ricin which is one of the most deadly naturally occurring chemical. It is reported that as few as 5 beans is enough to kill an adult human. These beans are carefully processed by manufacturer to extract castor oil which is used in many cosmetics, lotions, chocolate, candies and other foods. Elderberries - Elderberries are very popular in making wines, medicinal teas, jams and pies. These berries are also known for its poisonous content cyanide which lies in elderberry leaves and stems. Green elderberries or uncooked elderberries contain a poisonous alkaloid. Tomatoes - Ripe or red tomatoes are safe to eat and contain many nutrients which are essential for your health. But, if you consume green or unripe tomatoes and their leaves and stems in large quantity then you may suffer from severe illness or even death. As the green, unripe fruit of tomatoes, as well as the leaves, and stems, contain highest amounts of the poison alkaloid called tomatine and solanine. Cherries - Cherries are good for your health but if you chew or swallow their pits then they might put you in a real danger. Their pits contain cyanogenic glycosides, producing cyanide. The seeds, bark, and leaves contain a cyanide-producing compound called amygdalin. Red Kidney Beans - Red Kidney beans contain a sugar based glycoprotein called kidney bean lectin that if consumed raw or partially cooked, can produce symptoms similar to those of food poisoning. As few as 4 or 5 kidney beans can bring on symptoms within 1 to 3 hours. Symptoms include extreme nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. This toxin can be destroyed if red kidney beans are cooked at a high enough temperature and for the right length of time. Cinnamon - Cinnamon is one of the most important flavoring agents in food and drinks. Research reveals that coumarin is present, in substantial amounts in cinnamon flavored foods. Coumarin is very toxic to the liver and could cause severe damage to this organ.

How to Eat Carbs and Still Lose Weight
How to Lose Weight Fast. Many of us limit what we eat to get in shape or stay there. Most often, we try to cut down on carbs and limit our intake of our favorite foods. No-carb diets bring quick results, but there’s a problem: once you start eating carbs again, odds are you’ll put a lot of that weight right back on. Your body will suddenly start having extra fuel again, and it will store that fuel as fat. How can you eat your favorite foods and still lose weight? Let’s look at some key information about carbs from nutritionists. We’ll also look at a list of tasty foods that will help you diet safely and get rid of that excess weight once and for all — and keep it off! TIMESTAMPS Why no-carb diets are bad for you 0:33 Carbohydrates and Weight Loss 2:02 Complex carbs 2:28 Simple carbs 3:01 7 Complex Carbs You Should Eat 4:15 7. Chickpeas 4:49 6. Corn 5:33 5. Pasta 6:29 4. Green beans and asparagus 7:35 3. Mushrooms 8:27 2. Rice 9:09 1. Potatoes 10:03 Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music SUMMARY -Cutting out carbs entirely causes a condition called hypoglycemia, which can produce feelings of hunger, shakiness, dizziness, confusion, difficulty speaking, or anxiety. If your body goes into ketosis, it starts burning reserves of fat for energy. -The most important thing to remember about carbs is that they provide us with energy. They are our body’s main fuel source, and they are key to metabolizing fat and protein. -Complex carbs contain starch, fiber, pectin, and glycogen. They include bread, beans, cereals, pasta, potatoes, vegetables, and nuts. -Simple carbs contain glucose, fructose, galactose, sucrose, and maltose. They include fruit, milk, sweets, pastries, beer, and most fast food. -Eating all carbs, even complex carbs, will saturate your body with fuel, and it will have to store all that excess fuel somewhere. Eat what you need to support your level of activity and exercise regimen. -Chickpeas give you a good hit of fiber, which slows digestion to a healthy pace and helps control the amount of food we eat. -The protein and vitamins contained in corn help us get healthy skin, hair, and nails, contribute to fat burning, and have fiber to stimulate the work of the intestines. -Whole grain pasta contains complex carbs, which supply us with energy and clean our body of toxins. -Green beans contain potassium, which strengthens muscles and normalizes the work of the intestines. Asparagus possesses the same benefits. It contains fiber and large amounts of vitamins, helps lower high blood pressure, cleans out toxins, and stimulates the work of the heart. -Amino acids, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, and vitamins B, C, and D make mushrooms a very healthy dish. -Wild rice contains a small number of calories and a huge amount of fiber, protein, and tryptophan, an amino acid that serves as a natural sedative. -Boiling potatoes or baking them with vegetables and a little olive oil preserves their useful elements. Purple Potato Nice Cream - UBE (Vegan, WFPB)
This recipe is one that I first tried a couple of years ago, but at first I wasn't a fan. The reason why I didn't like it originally was because I previously baked the purple sweet potatoes in the oven before freezing and blending them. However, I found that baking them in the oven didn't break the sugars down enough and left the potato still pretty fibrous. Now that I have my InstantPot I wanted to give this recipe another chance, and I am so glad that I did! If you have followed me for a while now, you probably know how much I love sweet potatoes, and loving starring them in any dessert that I can come up with. So now that I have my InstantPot and can cook down these purple Japanese sweet potatoes enough, it is time to share this wonderful tasting & healthy purple treat! I Ate One Meal a Day For 30 Days And Here's What Happened
▶ Subscribe to the channel - https://goo.gl/nJ8d6r Ever heard of the one-meal-a-day diet? Yes, no? Whichever the case may be, I'll recommend you sit tight as I walk you through just about everything you need to know. First off, the one-meal-a-day diet is exactly what it sounds like — it's a plan that restricts you to just one meal a day. In essence, you'll get to eat whatever you want but of course, you can't go beyond a single meal. For the most part, the diet plan is created to challenge your traditional views on food intake and nutrition. And according to a few doctors, it could be the key to sustainable weight loss. Well, guess what? I decided to try the diet plan for 30 days and figured I should make this video to let you in on the pros and cons. Of course, at the end of the day, you'll decide if the plan is for you or not. Let's jump right in! Pros • It's simple and straightforward As mentioned earlier, the one-meal-a-day diet comes with one simple rule — just eat one meal a day and you're good! Essentially, there's no need for calorie counting, complex meal planning or special ingredients, weighing and the likes. You just have to stick to the simple rule! • You'll get to eat all your favorite food This is perhaps the biggest highlight of the one-meal-a-day diet — it gives you the freedom to eat whatever you want, say sweet potato chips, ice-cream, cheeseburgers and more. Well, I wouldn't recommend you eat everything at once though! • Reduced appetite Well, I don't know if you're going to experience this but I discovered that after fasting for most of the day, I didn't have the urge to eat too much afterward. Well, at this point, I'll just stick to the claims that fasting shrinks your stomach and make you want to eat less. You can give the plan a shot and of course, see if you feel the same way. • Sustainable weight loss Finally, the whole idea of eating one meal a day can be incredibly effective for weight loss. But of course there's a pretty reasonable catch — you have to try not to overeat at your one meal. Remember, weight loss is the plan, so do your best to stick to it! Cons • Hunger Pains Yes, this is clearly the biggest drawback of the one-meal-a-day diet. To be honest, I felt the hunger pains at first but of course, it got better as I grew more used to the routine. So what's the point? Well, the diet plan requires you to tolerate a certain level of hunger right off the bat; this is the only way to start the journey and stick with it! Note: I wouldn't recommend you try the one-meal-a-day diet if you're prone to binge eating — you may actually end up seeing little to no result. • Low energy levels As most of us know, any diet that restricts your calories can make you feel lethargic. When you start the one-meal-a-day plan, there's a good chance of feeling more tired than usual — I also experienced it. What's more, people who rely on sugary snacks to get an energy boost may find it hard to stick with the plan. Parting Words The one-meal-a-day diet plan is clearly not for everyone but, of course, you won't be wrong to try it if you can keep up with the rule. After 30 days on the one-meal-a-day diet plan, I actually lost a couple of pounds and I felt really good about it! Who wouldn't? A Beginners Guide: Nutrient Deficiency
Today, Ethan Walter discusses nutrient deficiencies: what they are, how to identify them, and how to treat them. A nutrient deficiency occurs when a plant is not getting enough of a nutrient for the normal plant functions. Common deficiencies are N, P, K, (three of the macronutrients), and Ca, Mg, and Fe. In previous videos like this one (https://youtu.be/jaZ_x-sgLO4), you learned that nutrients are measured in water with a number called EC. EC is a very useful number, but it doesn’t tell you what *ratio* of one nutrient to another is. If you have the wrong ratio of one nutrient to another, you could be reading the EC as sufficient, when a certain nutrient is actually too low. Deficiencies are identified by their symptoms. Some common deficiencies are chlorosis, necrosis, and stunted growth. The pattern that those symptoms occur in are important. Pay attention to where symptoms occur, whether it’s on new or old growth, and what combinations symptoms occur in. Plant nutrients are categorized as either mobile or immobile in the plant. Mobile nutrient deficiencies occur first in older growth, and immobile nutrients occur in younger growth. A plant deficiency key is a useful tool for farmers to identify deficiencies. If you’re still having trouble, consult with your local extension agents. Google is not a great way to ID deficiencies unless it’s from a peer reviewed source Treat deficiencies by supplementing the nutrient that is lacking. You can supplement through your nutrient reservoir or foliar feeding (but be careful; high concentrations can burn the foliage and ruin a crop). Consider making regular supplements or switching suppliers if the deficiency occurs commonly. Here are some common deficiencies and diagnosis tips: Nitrogen is the “green up” nutrient. Nitrogen is mobile, so it will affect older growth first, and will cause total chlorosis starting at the tip of the leaf. You will also see stunted growth. Phosphorus deficiency rarely displays outward symptoms noticeably or quickly. You may see stunted growth and the leaves will begin to get darker and purplish/bronze. Like nitrogen, these symptoms will begin on the old growth. Potassium deficiencies is slow to show symptoms similar to phosphorus. Over time, you’ll see chlorosis around the edge of the leaf (the margin). Chlorosis will move from the tip to the back, but will leave the center of the leaf untouched. Like nitrogen, these symptoms will begin on the old growth. Magnesium is a very common deficiency in hydroponics. It’s mobile, so it starts on old growth first. It looks similar to nitrogen deficiency, but will have inter veinal chlorosis instead of complete chlorosis. It also turns almost completely white (in comparison to the light green of a nitrogen deficiency). When you correct it, the old foliage will stay chlorotic, but new leaves will look healthy. Calcium is an immobile nutrient, so it affects the the top of the plant (new growth) first. Calcium deficiencies show up as necrosis on the margin on the leaf. It will usually start at the tip of the leaf - which gets confused with tip burn - but be splotchy along the margin unlike tip burn. *Calcium deficiency happens a lot in indoor systems with poor HVAC systems. The more airflow, the more respiration the plant does, allowing the immobile calcium to be sent to the leaf tip. Another cause is high humidity. Try to keep humidity between 40-60%. Iron is an immobile nutrient, so it affects the the top of the plant (new growth) first. The example used here is basil, and it’s worth mentioning that basil deal with this a lot. The symptom is inter veinal chlorosis in new growth, similar to calcium. *Iron deficiencies are especially common in symptoms that use UV filtration. The UV light creates a chemical reaction in the plant-ready iron (chelated iron) and makes it precipitate out of the solution. It sinks to the bottom, and the plants can’t use it. When we add iron, we unplug the UV filter for 24 hours. Iron can also be added through foliar applications. ----------------- Timestamps/What’s Covered: 00:17 What are Nutrient Deficiencies? 00:49 Common Deficiencies 02:19 Identifying Deficiencies 04:23 Treating Deficiencies 07:00 Nitrogen 08:45 Phosphorus 10:09 Potassium 11:58 Magnesium 13:49 Iron 16:21 Calcium 21:48 Recap ----------------- Connect with Bright Agrotech: Website: https://brightagrotech.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BrightAgrotech/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/BrightAgrotech Instagram: https://instagram.com/zipgrow ----------------- Music by: Scott Gratton http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Scott_Gratton/

Yummy + Share: Spicy Sweet Potato & Tuna Cakes
Tune up dinnertime with tuna! Spice up the night and make your taste buds sing with the flavors and spices of these Spicy Sweet Potato and Tuna Cakes. Packed with vitamins, fiber, protein, and no heavy carbs like traditional crab or tuna cakes—consider this recipe a dinner win. Yummy + Share: Spicy Sweet Potato & Tuna Cakes Serves: 4 to 6 Time: 40 minutes (15 min. prep/25 min bake) Ingredients 10 ounces canned tuna packed in water, drained 1 ½ cup mashed cooked sweet potatoes 2 large eggs 3 green onions, sliced thinly on the bias 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, minced 1 ½ teaspoon lemon zest ½ to 1 tablespoon jalapeño pepper, finely chopped ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (to taste) 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided Salt and pepper (to taste) Garnish: lemon wedges Instructions Preheat your oven to 350°F. Use 1 tablespoon of the olive oil to grease a 12-cup muffin pan, unless you plan to use muffin cup liners. We recommend using the liners for ease of cleanup. It's also really easy to pop any leftover cakes into a refrigerator or freezer bag. Slice the onions thinly on the bias and chop the cilantro. Drain the tuna and mix with the scallions and cilantro in a large bowl. Add the mashed sweet potato and combine gently. The chunks of tuna should appear similarly to crab in a crab cake. Deseed and devein the jalapeños before finely chopping. Mix in lemon zest, jalapeños, two tablespoons of olive oil (if you grease the muffin cups, you only need to use 1 tablespoon oil), 2 eggs, and red pepper flakes. Mix thoroughly and season with salt and pepper to your taste. Using a quarter-cup measure, scoop out the tuna/sweet potato mixture and drop into your muffin cups. Some cooks like to flatten the top of the cakes with the back of a spoon or the measuring cup: it's your choice. If you leave the tops a little rough, they will bake into a slightly crispier crust. Bake the cakes for 20 to 25 minutes. Check for doneness with a clean toothpick. If the mixture doesn't stick to it, your cakes are done. You can serve them with lemon wedges or any kind of condiment you enjoy with crab cakes. These cakes reheat well in the microwave and taste good the next day. They are also good cold!
