Sweet Potatoes: Health Benefits, Risks & Nutrition Facts
Sweet Potatoes: Health Benefits, Risks & Nutrition Facts Although they're soft and creamy enough to be put in pies and called dessert, sweet potatoes are also a surprisingly nutritious vegetable. "Sweet potatoes are high in vitamin A, vitamin B5, B6, thiamin, niacin, riboflavin, and, due to their orange color, are high in carotenoids," said San Diego-based nutritionist Laura Flores. Plus, they're fat-free, relatively low in sodium and have fewer calories than white potatoes — although they do have more sugar. Sweet potatoes are one of the best sources of vitamin A; a large one contains more than 100 percent of the daily recommended intake, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Vitamin A is an antioxidant powerhouse, and is linked to anti-aging benefits, cancer prevention and the maintenance of good eyesight, according to the National Institutes of Health. Although the orange variety is the most common in the United States, sweet potatoes also come in white, yellow, pink and purple varieties, according to the Library of Congress. While the orange and yellow types contain the most vitamin A, the purple sort is an excellent way to get antioxidants, the Cleveland Clinic reports. Here are the nutrition facts for sweet potatoes, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which regulates food labeling through the National Labeling and Education Act: So it's clear that while sweet potato pie might be soul food, sweet potatoes themselves are a whole-body vegetable. Health benefits Heart health Sweet potatoes are a great source of B6 vitamins, which are brilliant at breaking down homocysteine, a substance that contributes to the hardening of blood vessels and arteries, according to the Harvard University School of Public Health. Sweet potatoes' potassium content is also helpful for your heart, as it lowers blood pressure by maintaining fluid balance, as explained by the American Heart Association. Potassium is also an important electrolyte that helps regulate your heartbeat. Controlling blood sugar and maintaining energy For as sweet as they are, sweet potatoes have a low glycemic index (which means they release sugar slowly into the bloodstream). "Sweet potatoes — unlike other starchy foods that elevate blood sugar rapidly after [they're consumed] due to their metabolism into sugar — will help steady the levels of blood sugar," Flores said. This means you won't get blood-sugar spikes, but you will get a steady amount of energy. Flores noted that this regulation occurs even in people with type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, the Beauregard sweet potato, an orange-skinned variety grown in North Carolina, is similar to a white-skinned variety used in Japan to make a dietary supplement called Caiapo, which is marketed to control blood glucose in people with diabetes, according to an article in Perspectives, the magazine of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University. Researchers have found that the Beauregard "has essentially the same protein patterns" as Caiapo. Therefore, consuming sweet potatoes, or extracts from sweet potatoes, may help control blood glucose, and may someday provide a less expensive treatment with fewer side effects, said Jon Allen, a professor of food science at North Carolina State University. As if that weren't sweet enough, sweet potatoes are a terrific source of manganese, according to the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University. Manganese helps the body metabolize carbohydrates and thus maintain healthy blood sugar levels, and it can even stabilize your appetite. It also helps the body utilize antioxidants. Stress According to the Los Angeles Department of Public Health, sweet potatoes contain magnesium, the go-to mineral for destressing. It promotes relaxation, calmness and a good mood, as well as artery, blood, bone, muscle and nerve health, according to Psychology Today. Immunity and anti-inflammatory properties "Due to the color-pigmented vitamins, sweet potatoes are high in anti-inflammatory benefits," Flores said. One sweet potato contains about half of the daily recommended intake of vitamin C. Vitamins A and E also support a healthy immune system and are powerful disease-fighting antioxidants. While orange sweet potatoes contain more vitamin A, purple sweet potatoes are packed with the antioxidant anthocyanin, which is responsible for red, blue and purple colors in fruits and vegetables. According to the Linus Pauling Institute, pigment-related antioxidants have anti-inflammatory properties, which are beneficial to overall health and help mitigate inflammatory disorders. Skin and hair Vitamin A may help protect against sun damage, according to a 2004 study in the journal Clinical Cancer Research, and vitamins C and E are well-known for their beauty benefits. They encourage healthy, glowing skin and collagen growth.

I only ate potatoes for two weeks
What if you ate only potatoes for two weeks? It was a wild ride! And I lost a stone (14 pounds) Video transcription: What if you only ate potatoes for two weeks? So we're actually going to Tesco right now, to get a bag of potatoes, what's the time? Late It's late It's 11 O'clock Here we go Desiree potatoes, King Edward potatoes, Baking sweet potatoes, white potatoes, Jacket potatoes, sweet potatoes, imperfect potatoes, Maris piper potatoes, baby potatoes, Rudolph potatoes, Jersey royals. Let's just deal with these... So here it is, the first potato. Copped, boiled and ready for tomorrow. And because we all want to know, here's how much I weigh. Exactly 14 stone That's 14 stone with a little bit of beer in that belly. It's currently the 16th of May 2017 and here it is. I've never felt so nervous eating a potato before So I've just got back from work and I'm feeling really rough, which is weird, I shouldn't cos I've bad days of eating before. this just feels like my body's screeming out for this like.... So I've got this baked potato going and I'm boiling tomorrow's potatoes But by the end, I'm hoping to be some sort of like potato god, you know, like some guru Get enlightened by potatoes. Oh god. I usually poop every morning at around 11 o'clock and I didn't go yesterday, it took until 12 o'clock today. That's 25 hours later! Jesus. And I feel like that bit's only going to get worse Let's talk about the Bristol stool scale. A scale from 1 to 7 to show the different types of poops you can have. Obviously, these don't endorse me This is a number 1 Then this is a 3 And then you get up to 7 The 16th I might not have gone, but on the 17th my body complained So, I don't think I'm going to eat many more boiled potatoes because they're just kind of wet and slimy. Like eating slugs all day. I'd rather just eat baked potatoes and pre-prepare them. There's a reason for this. That's Hayley, my partner of 8 years. I haven't told her yet, I'm 3 days in and she doesn't like my stupid ideas 2 weeks of only eating potatoes You're kidding me? I've done it for 2 days already so does that mean you can eat McDonald's chips? No, I can't have chips, I can only have either baked or boiled potatoes, I've got wait until I get home now That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard Matt no, I don't like these fad diets they're ridiculous It is a fad diet It isn't It's stupid, no, that's really annoyed me She was really annoyed until she realised that for two weeks she could eat great food and just watch me suffer So the next few days went fine And then I switched to sweet potatoes, everyone loves sweet potatoes, but if you bake them and eat them whole with their hard leathery skin and their weird, slimy insides. You realise. They're disgusting And then this happened These things tore me apart And the next 4 days was full of one and two's I can't even smell them. It's a potato, it shouldn't be hard. I like these normally Why is it so disgusting? That was absolutely foul I can't. I just literally can't So after that, I changed back to normal potatoes and things became a dream Things were just happening, things were so much clearer I didn't worry about what I was eating next because I knew what it'd be, so I just started getting on with it Yeah the food was boring, but I felt really good, all that until I reached it Full potato enlightenment I'm feeling just awful at the moment I got this bowl full of potatoes, I'm just feeling really like... I dunno. I don't want to say faint, even know I was. I've just got to eat more of these, maybe I'm not eating enough. I dunno. They're doing what they're supposed to be doing, filling my stomach and making me not feel hungry, but because of that, I can tell I'm just not eating enough anymore. My stomach has shrunk so much I'm not feeling very hungry. Feeling very hungry? God I can't speak That's a lot of weight Things were pretty bad I couldn't function properly anymore and me and Hayley were arguing So over my last potato, let's talk about what I've learnt Honestly, the hardest thing wasn't really the cravings, which were pretty bad at first It was just really boring And that's coming from someone who obviously is living in Britain and has everything in the world around me It made me grateful for the small foods that I didn't really like, which I've just taken for granted Because right now, I'd kill for them I just never realised the gravity of the luxury I started feeling really lethargic and I just couldn't work as well So This is my last potato How big is that shot glass? Cheers Thank god that's over This feels like a big thing, even know it isn't I'm just about to eat some cheese Oh my god

10 BASIC Foods You didn't know were SUPER Foods!
10 BASIC Foods You didn't know were SUPER Foods! From vegetables that help fight cancer to fruits that help you sleep better…stay tuned to number 1 to find out about 10 foods you didn’t know were superfoods: This top 10 brought to you by Zero2Hero!! Don't forget to subscribe here! https://goo.gl/NXuChu Click here to see the 10 Craziest Facts About Julius Caesar! 10 Craziest Facts About Julius Caesar! Number 10: Sweet Potato. While the sweet potato is a starchy root vegetable, it’s also a powerhouse of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. What health benefits do you stand to reap by munching on this tuber? Well, the color of the sweet potato skin indicates the antioxidants it contains. Orange sweet potatoes have high concentrations of beta-carotene, that’s converted to Vitamin A in your body. Vitamin A strengthens the immune system, supports bone health, and protects your cells from damage by free radicals. Purple-skinned sweet potatoes have a high concentration of anthocyanins (AN-tho-CY-uh-nins), which are anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and can improve your visual acuity. Further studies have shown that consumption of whole sweet potatoes could help in the moderation of blood sugar levels in type-2 diabetes. Sweet potatoes are high in dietary fiber and are botanically unrelated to white potatoes. What’s great though, is that in recipes calling for white potatoes, you can use sweet potatoes instead. The easiest and the best way to cook them is by boiling them…so, boil some up today! Number 9: Red Sweet Peppers. Sweet peppers, or bell peppers, have different colors including green, yellow, orange, and red. But if you’re looking for the most nutritious and most savory pepper in your supermarket’s grocery section, opt for red bell peppers. Contrasted with green bell peppers, they have 11 times more beta-carotene, 1.5 times more Vitamin C and 8 times more Vitamin A. They have a powerful antioxidant called capsanthin (CAP-sun-thin). It has been shown to have cancer-preventive benefits, and it gives red peppers their brilliant red color. You can also get a descent amount of iron from red peppers. Similarly, the high amounts of Vitamin C in the peppers improves the absorption of dietary iron from other foods such as spinach or meat. They are also an excellent source of Vitamin B6, that supports proper brain development in kids and regulates blood levels of homogeneity (homo-gin-EE-i-tee), which in abnormal levels, has been linked to heart disease, strokes and Alzheimer's disease. Bell peppers are usually in season during summer and fall, and when selecting a red sweet pepper, make sure its firm, brightly colored and heavy for its size. Number 8: Parsley. Nothing says fresh like chopped parsley set on a partly charred steak, grilled fish or any of your favorite restaurant meals. But the world’s most popular herb is more than a decorative garnish! Before we learn about the benefits of parsley, take a moment to like this video and subscribe to Zero2Hero! It will help you feel super! Parsley contains a multitude of nutrients including Vitamin K, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, antioxidants, flavonoids, folic acid, and minerals like calcium, manganese & copper. So, why gorge on this highly nutritious herb? It contains the highest concentrations of myricetin (muh-RISS-i-tin), a plant-based flavonoid with anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic and anti-cancer benefits. Parsley is also good for your heart, because of its folic acid, which promotes general cardiovascular health. You also derive a descent amount of luteolin (lou-TEE-oh-lin) that has been shown to help fight cancer, aged related diseases, ALS and Autism. What’s also great is that you can find parsley in your supermarket all year round. Number 7: Broccoli. This miniature tree looking veggie has been around for more than 2,000 years and resulted from the breeding of Brassica (BRASS-i-cuh) crops, such as cabbages, by an ancient Italian civilization. It was introduced in America by Southern Italian immigrants, but became popular in the 1920s. There are many ways to cook it, and it provides many health benefits. No wonder it has become hugely successful. So, what does it contain? Though it’s 90% water, Broccoli is an excellent source of Vitamin C, which is essential for proper immune function. It has some of the highest levels of glucoraphanin (glue-co-RAFF-uh-nin) that’s converted to sulforaphane (soul-for-AH-feign) during digestion. Animal and laboratory-based studies have revealed some amazing benefits of sulforaphane. It’s the most promising molecule that can combat and kill cancer. It lowers LDL, or bad cholesterol, levels in humans. In hypersensitive rats, sulforaphane and broccoli sprouts decreased blood pressure and protected the heart against cell problems and oxidative stress.

One of my favorite kitchen appliances that makes meal prep so easy, tasty, and of course, healthy is the slow cooker, also known as the crock pot. So if you’re looking to Live Lean, you need to start planning your meals and preparing them in advance. Meal prep is one of the most effective ways to lose body fat and build lean muscle. One simple way to do this is using a slow cooker. It’s one of the easiest ways to meal prep and cook in bulk. Also, most slow cooker recipes are lower calorie as no added oils, butters, or sauces are required to keep the food moist, since the juices from the meat help. To really take advantage of slow cooker, make sure you add a lot of ingredients to cook in bulk, then store the left overs in the fridge or freezer. That way, you can take them to work, or eat later as a quick snack on the go. Healthy slow cooker recipes that are so easy and tasty: Slow cooker recipe #1: Tri-tip beef with vegetables Course: Main Dish Prep Time: 2 minutes Cook Time: 7 hours Servings: 7 INGREDIENTS - 2 1/4 lbs tri-tip beef (pre-seasoned or add your favorite spices) - 1/4 cup Water - 1 chopped red onion - 2 cups baby carrots - 2 cups cauliflower (chopped) - 2 cups broccoli (chopped) INSTRUCTIONS 1. Add the tri-tip beef to the slow cooker. 2. Add a 1/4 cup of water. 3. Then add as many vegetables as you like. We usually add a combination of chopped onion, baby carrots, cauliflower, and broccoli. 4. Put the lid on the slow cooker and set the timer for 7 hours. 5. You're done. Nutrition Info (per serving): - Calories: 383 - Protein: 43g - Carbohydrates: 10g - Fat: 19g One of the best features about using your slow cooker is that you literally don’t have to touch it during the hours it’s cooking. There’s little to no chance it’s going to burn, as long as you use enough liquid, since the heat turns off automatically when the timer is done. Once the tri-tip beef is finished cooking, the meat just falls apart, and makes the whole house smell so good. This slow cooker recipe is just awesome. Slow cooker recipe #2: Pork tenderloin with vegetables Course: Main Dish Prep Time: 2 minutes Cook Time: 6 hours Servings: 8 INGREDIENTS - 3 lbs pork loin - 24 oz tomato sauce (with olive oil, not soybean oil) - 2 sliced Zucchini - 1 head cauliflower (chopped) - 2 tbsp dried basil INSTRUCTIONS 1. Add the pork loin to your slow cooker. 2. Add in a healthy olive oil based tomato sauce that uses all natural ingredients. Make sure your tomato sauce does not contain soybean oil. 3. Add 2 sliced zucchinis and a head of chopped cauliflower. However, feel free to use any of your favorite chopped vegetables. 4. Add 2 tbsp of basil to give it an incredible flavor. 5. Stir it up to make sure the tomato sauce is covering all the ingredients. 6. Add the top to the slow cooker, set the timer for 6 hours, and you're done. Nutrition Info: (per serving): - Calories: 356 - Protein: 45g - Carbohydrates: 8g - Fat: 16g No more excuses about not having enough time to cook. Go get yourself a slow cooker and put it to work for you. Thanks for watching and keep Living Lean. Sweet Potatoes VS Minute Potatoes
Here’s a tip for both general health and diabetes: sweet potatoes are a great source of calcium, potassium and vitamins A and C, while also being low in calories. Plus, white potatoes spike blood sugar, while sweet potatoes create a gradual change. Visit https://connect.bcbsok.com/health-and-wellness/m/mediagallery/71 for the full recipe!

7 Food Combinations That Can Ruin Your Health
We got familiar with diet specialists’ recommendations and put together 7 food combinations you’d better avoid. These food combinations can affect your digestion system badly and even make you sick. 😱 TIMESTAMPS Sandwiches with coffee 1:14 Tomatoes with cucumbers 2:30 Potatoes with meat 3:34 Pasta with minced meat 4:41 Beer with nuts 5:38 Dairies with pineapple 7:06 Milk with banana 8:06 SUMMARY - Unfortunately, when you say hello to cheese sandwiches and coffee, you also say goodbye to all the healthy properties of cheese. The main reason is that the simple carbs in bread prevent calcium from being digested properly and bringing help to your nervous and cardiovascular systems. Moreover, if you add instant coffee, there will be no benefit to your health at all! - The latest research actually shows that combining these two vegetables can disturb the biochemical pathways of your body. This can lead to excessive calcination and swelling, and the vitamins contained in both vegetables won’t be digested properly. Above all, these products have different digestion time, which again, confuses the system. - Potatoes with meat: the starch contained in potatoes demands alkalotic digestive fluids, and the proteins from meat demand acidic ones. So, when put together, they just get stuck inside your stomach and can bring such disorders as heartburn, belching, gas, and many others. - Just like with potatoes and meat, the same reasoning applies to minced meat with pasta. The salivary glands produce ptyalin and amylase, which transform the starch carbs in pasta into simple sugars. - Salty products contain a lot of sodium, so your body increases the fluid loss, and you get thirsty. That increases the likelihood of having more and more pints of beer. On the other hand, beer, as the third most consumed drink in the world after water and tea, has a couple of bad effects on your system as well. - Pineapple and dairy don't really go well together. Sour fruits make your digestion work slower, especially in the morning. Besides, pineapple contains bromelain, an enzymic complex which can cause intoxication when combined with dairy products. - Combining bananas with milk, as a smoothie or milkshake may disturb your digestion process as well as your sleep pattern. Also, different flavors of these products confuse your digestion system and result in different kinds of imbalances. How to Eat for Mass | Jay Cutler Living Large | Ep 3
The best bodybuilders have nutrition down to a science. Jay Cutler might as well have a Ph.D. in eating large and getting big. Maximize your muscle growth by following his nutrition plan! ► Jay Cutler's 8-Week Mass Program: http://bbcom.me/2HsYSQo ► Shop Bodybuilding Signature Supplements: http://bbcom.me/2HtrcSL Elite bodybuilders like Jay Cutler need more food in one day than most of us eat in two. Or three. You may not be 280 pounds of muscular mayhem, but if you want to gain size, you need to be ready to eat, and then continuously ask for more. Many lifters think the size battle is won or lost in the gym, but the diet is what separates the beasts from the boys. Learn how Jay Cutler eats, check out what he eats, and take home some nutrition lessons from the man himself. Take in the right food in the right amounts at the right times, and you'll be a mass monster in the making. Let the metamorphosis begin. He trains hard, he works hard, but more than anything, Jay Cutler eats. A lot. "Cooking and eating is five to six hours of my day, no question," Jay says. "If you follow me around for a day or two, you'll see that most of my time is spent eating meals." Food is Jay's biggest expense, his biggest time-sink—and one of the main reasons he's been so monumentally successful. Eating so much so often is Jay's biggest challenge. "The hardest part about being the competitive bodybuilder Jay Cutler is the amount of calories I need to eat," he says. Most bodybuilders love to eat; they crave food. Not Jay: "I have zero cravings and zero anticipation for any meal. I don't look forward to food." Jay may not love it, but he still has to eat every three hours. He eats at midnight, again at three a.m., and then he eats his breakfast at six a.m. "The consumption of food remains consistent, and I still can't eat enough," Jay says. When he's training for a contest, Jay likes to stay home to prepare his food, leaving nothing to chance. "I like to weigh everything," he says. "[Precontest], I take my diet very seriously." Nonetheless, Jay's immense caloric expenditure means he eats food that most clean eaters would avoid. "Having a turkey sandwich and some potato chips is great for me," he says. "I'll have a Snickers bar every once in a while." To keep his size, Jay also needs a pretty consistent fuel of insulin-stoking simple carbohydrates. "Dense, fibrous carbs don't hit my body hard enough." He may not like having to eat as much or as often as he does, but Jay has the experience and willpower to do it well. It is his mental toughness that makes him not only a physical specimen but also a warrior at the mental game. | Bodybuilding.com Signature Supplements & Clothing | ► Signature 100% Whey Protein: http://bbcom.me/2FbU5C5 ► Signature Pre Workout: http://bbcom.me/2FbUrbT ► Signature Amino Plus Energy: http://bbcom.me/2FecQoD ► Signature BCAA: http://bbcom.me/2FbUO6h ► Signature Fish Oil: http://bbcom.me/2FbV8lv ► Signature Creatine Monohydrate: http://bbcom.me/2FbVuZn ► Signature Multivitamin: http://bbcom.me/2FeBs0z ► Bodybuilding.com Clothing: http://bbcom.me/2Fe6BB4 ============================================= | Bodybuilding.com | ► Supplement Store: http://bbcom.me/2HvdUVK ► Sales & Specials: http://bbcom.me/2Hw5ygu ► Fitness Articles: http://bbcom.me/2FfKhHh ► Premium Fitness Plans: http://bbcom.me/2Hw5JIG ============================================= | Follow Us | ► Twitch: http://bit.ly/2q1dttE ► YouTube: http://bit.ly/1RSJFa4 ► Facebook: http://on.fb.me/1lomhpr ► Instagram: http://bit.ly/1LzBxab ► Twitter: http://bit.ly/1RSJQlL ► Google+: http://bit.ly/1NRe8qu ► Pinterest: http://bit.ly/1OOZgY4 ► Spotify: http://spoti.fi/1NRebm0 We are Bodybuilding.com. The Brain Bowl Recipe | Cedars Sinai
Based on the MIND diet, this brain bowl is easy to prepare and packed with nutrients proven to aid in brain health. Sweet potatoes are rich in fiber and full of mineral-rich vitamins that are easily absorbed by the body, which makes them not only filling but also helps lower cholesterol. Quinoa is a plant-based protein, an excellent replacement for animal proteins, and can provide 60% of your daily recommended manganese. This superfood also helps lower blood pressure, which is great for the brain! Put all that on a bed of kale, which contains lots of brain-boosting omega-3 fatty acids as well as vitamins A and C, and you've got a meal chock-full of healthy benefits. INGREDIENTS: Brain bowl: 1 large sweet potato or two small ones, skinned and sliced into ½ inch thick slices 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) 1 (15-ounce) can chickpeas, drained and rinsed 1 tsp. each of turmeric, coriander, cumin 1/2 tsp. each smoked paprika, garlic powder, cayenne (optional) 1 cup uncooked quinoa ¼ tsp. turmeric powder 1/8 tsp. salt 3 cups of kale, massaged with a teaspoon of lemon juice and a pinch of salt (or spring mix) 1 avocado, sliced 2 tbsp. sunflower seeds 1 tbsp. hemp seeds Lemon tahini herb sauce: 1 garlic glove, chopped ¼ cup tahini 2 tbsp. dill ½ lemon, juiced ¼ cup hot water Directions: Combine all ingredients and chill before serving with the Brain Bowl. PREPARATION: 1. Preheat oven to 375ºF and line a large baking sheets with parchment paper. 2. Spread out the chopped sweet potato on one half of sheet. Put 1/2 tablespoon of oil and toss the potatoes until coated. Sprinkle with fine grain sea salt. 3. Roasted chickpeas: drain and rinse the chickpeas. Transfer the chickpeas to a bowl, drizzle with 1/2 teaspoon oil, and sprinkle with the spices. Toss gently to combine. Transfer to the other half of the baking sheet next to sweet potatoes, spreading it in one layer. 4. Place both the sweet potato and chickpeas into the preheated oven. Bake for 15 minutes, then remove and flip the sweet potato pieces (for even cooking, but not necessary). Place back in the oven for another 15 minutes. When the chickpeas are golden and the sweet potatoes are lightly browned on the bottom and fork tender, they are ready. 5. Cook the quinoa: rinse the quinoa very well in a fine mesh sieve and transfer to a medium pot. Add 1 3/4 cups water and bring to a simmer over medium-high heat. Add ½ tsp of turmeric and 1/8 tsp of salt. Reduce heat to medium, cover with a tight-fitting lid, and cook for 13-16 minutes, until the water is absorbed and the quinoa is tender and fluffy. Once cooked, fluff with a fork and remove from heat. Season with black pepper, optionally. 6. Assemble the bowl: greens at one quarter of a large shallow bowl, quinoa on the second quarter, roasted veggies and chickpeas in the rest of the bowl. Add the sliced avocado in the center, and drizzle about 2 tablespoons of the dressing. Sprinkle with sunflower and hemp seeds. I Ate One Meal a Day For 30 Days And Here's What Happened
▶ Subscribe to the channel - https://goo.gl/nJ8d6r Ever heard of the one-meal-a-day diet? Yes, no? Whichever the case may be, I'll recommend you sit tight as I walk you through just about everything you need to know. First off, the one-meal-a-day diet is exactly what it sounds like — it's a plan that restricts you to just one meal a day. In essence, you'll get to eat whatever you want but of course, you can't go beyond a single meal. For the most part, the diet plan is created to challenge your traditional views on food intake and nutrition. And according to a few doctors, it could be the key to sustainable weight loss. Well, guess what? I decided to try the diet plan for 30 days and figured I should make this video to let you in on the pros and cons. Of course, at the end of the day, you'll decide if the plan is for you or not. Let's jump right in! Pros • It's simple and straightforward As mentioned earlier, the one-meal-a-day diet comes with one simple rule — just eat one meal a day and you're good! Essentially, there's no need for calorie counting, complex meal planning or special ingredients, weighing and the likes. You just have to stick to the simple rule! • You'll get to eat all your favorite food This is perhaps the biggest highlight of the one-meal-a-day diet — it gives you the freedom to eat whatever you want, say sweet potato chips, ice-cream, cheeseburgers and more. Well, I wouldn't recommend you eat everything at once though! • Reduced appetite Well, I don't know if you're going to experience this but I discovered that after fasting for most of the day, I didn't have the urge to eat too much afterward. Well, at this point, I'll just stick to the claims that fasting shrinks your stomach and make you want to eat less. You can give the plan a shot and of course, see if you feel the same way. • Sustainable weight loss Finally, the whole idea of eating one meal a day can be incredibly effective for weight loss. But of course there's a pretty reasonable catch — you have to try not to overeat at your one meal. Remember, weight loss is the plan, so do your best to stick to it! Cons • Hunger Pains Yes, this is clearly the biggest drawback of the one-meal-a-day diet. To be honest, I felt the hunger pains at first but of course, it got better as I grew more used to the routine. So what's the point? Well, the diet plan requires you to tolerate a certain level of hunger right off the bat; this is the only way to start the journey and stick with it! Note: I wouldn't recommend you try the one-meal-a-day diet if you're prone to binge eating — you may actually end up seeing little to no result. • Low energy levels As most of us know, any diet that restricts your calories can make you feel lethargic. When you start the one-meal-a-day plan, there's a good chance of feeling more tired than usual — I also experienced it. What's more, people who rely on sugary snacks to get an energy boost may find it hard to stick with the plan. Parting Words The one-meal-a-day diet plan is clearly not for everyone but, of course, you won't be wrong to try it if you can keep up with the rule. After 30 days on the one-meal-a-day diet plan, I actually lost a couple of pounds and I felt really good about it! Who wouldn't? Top 10 Foods for Diabetes Control
Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases in which there are high blood sugar levels over a prolonged period. Symptoms of high blood sugar include frequent urination, increased thirst, and increased hunger. If left untreated, diabetes can cause many serious long-term complications include heart disease, stroke, chronic kidney failure, foot ulcers, and damage to the eyes. What you eat can help you to control and fight your diabetes. Research proves that making a few key changes to your diet such as eating more produce, fewer refined carbohydrates, plenty of lean protein can help in improving your blood-sugar and cuts the risk of diabetes-related complications. Certain foods are packed with nutrients that stabilise blood sugar levels, protect your heart, and even save your vision from the damaging effects of diabetes. These top 10 foods can help you in controlling Diabetes. Spinach The American Diabetes Association calls spinach a diabetes super food and recommends that you regularly include this dark green leafy non-starchy vegetable in your diet. Besides being rich in vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals, spinach possesses a low glycemic index, which means eating it will help support healthy and stable blood glucose levels. Spinach is low in carbohydrates, containing only 0.83 grams per cup. The fact that spinach contains so few carbohydrates makes it an excellent choice on a diabetes diet. Broccoli Broccoli contains a compound called sulforaphane, which triggers several anti-inflammatory processes that improve blood sugar control and protect blood vessels from the cardiovascular damage that’s often a consequence of diabetes. Olive oil Olive oil is recognized as one of the healthiest edible oils since it contains less saturated fats. It is rich in Omega 9 and Omega 3 which help maintain the flexibility of blood vessels, allowing good blood flow. Olive oil, especially extra virgin, contains tyrosol phenolic compounds such as oleuropein and oleocanthal. These compounds are nature’s most powerful anti-oxidants. Sweet potatoes Sweet potatoes are a good carbohydrate choice for diabetics. The glycemic index of sweet potatoes is a lot lower, which is better for diabetes control, according to a 2002 article in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition." Eating sweet potatoes in moderate amounts will help you keep your blood sugar levels in the healthy range even if you have diabetes. Avocados Avocados are an excellent choice for people with diabetes because they are very rich in dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals and packed with numerous health benefiting plant nutrients. Blueberries Blueberries contain both insoluble fiber (which “flushes” fat out of your system) and soluble fiber (which slows down the emptying of your stomach, and improves blood sugar control). It also contain a natural plant compound known as anthocyanins. Scientists believe these may help lower blood sugar by boosting insulin production. Tomatoes Tomatoes are an excellent source of vitamin C, vitamin A, and vitamin K. They are also a very good source of, potassium, manganese, dietary fiber, chromium, and vitamin B1. Because of their low carbohydrate content, tomatoes can play a big role in controlling blood sugar levels. The low carbohydrate content also helps lower calorie intake and can help diabetics to lose weight. Eggs Eggs are a versatile food and a great source of protein, and the American Diabetes Association considers eggs an excellent choice for people with diabetes. Cinnamon Cinnamon spice has the highest anti-oxidant strength of all the food sources in nature. Many studies show that consumption of one teaspoon cinnamon to three teaspoons a day has a positive effect on reducing blood glucose levels. It was found that the cinnamon can make your cells more sensitive to insulin. Dates Dates are a great choice for a person with diabetes as they can help control sugar cravings, and they are low on the glycemic index. The carbohydrates in dates provide instant energy, and the high fiber contained in dates is good for digestion. This sweet desert fruit is cholesterol and fat free therefore, they serve as a great snack item. Many essential disease protective minerals are also present in dates.
