"Sweet potatoes are high in vitamin A, vitamin B5, B6, thiamin, niacin, riboflavin, and, due to their orange color, are high in carotenoids," said San Diego-based nutritionist Laura Flores. Plus, they're fat-free, relatively low in sodium and have fewer calories than white potatoes — although they do have more sugar. Sweet potatoes are one of the best sources of vitamin A; a large one contains more than 100 percent of the daily recommended intake, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Vitamin A is an antioxidant powerhouse, and is linked to anti-aging benefits, cancer prevention and the maintenance of good eyesight, according to the National Institutes of Health. Although the orange variety is the most common in the United States, sweet potatoes also come in white, yellow, pink and purple varieties, according to the Library of Congress. While the orange and yellow types contain the most vitamin A, the purple sort is an excellent way to get antioxidants, the Cleveland Clinic reports. Here are the nutrition facts for sweet potatoes, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which regulates food labeling through the National Labeling and Education Act: So it's clear that while sweet potato pie might be soul food, sweet potatoes themselves are a whole-body vegetable. Health benefits Heart health Sweet potatoes are a great source of B6 vitamins, which are brilliant at breaking down homocysteine, a substance that contributes to the hardening of blood vessels and arteries, according to the Harvard University School of Public Health. Sweet potatoes' potassium content is also helpful for your heart, as it lowers blood pressure by maintaining fluid balance, as explained by the American Heart Association. Researchers have found that the Beauregard "has essentially the same protein patterns" as Caiapo. Therefore, consuming sweet potatoes, or extracts from sweet potatoes, may help control blood glucose, and may someday provide a less expensive treatment with fewer side effects, said Jon Allen, a professor of food science at North Carolina State University. As if that weren't sweet enough, sweet potatoes are a terrific source of manganese, according to the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University. Manganese helps the body metabolize carbohydrates and thus maintain healthy blood sugar levels, and it can even stabilize your appetite. It also helps the body utilize antioxidants. Stress According to the Los Angeles Department of Public Health, sweet potatoes contain magnesium, the go-to mineral for destressing. It promotes relaxation, calmness and a good mood, as well as artery, blood, bone, muscle and nerve health, according to Psychology Today. One of my favorite kitchen appliances that makes meal prep so easy, tasty, and of course, healthy is the slow cooker, also known as the crock pot. So if you’re looking to Live Lean, you need to start planning your meals and preparing them in advance. Meal prep is one of the most effective ways to lose body fat and build lean muscle. One simple way to do this is using a slow cooker. It’s one of the easiest ways to meal prep and cook in bulk. Also, most slow cooker recipes are lower calorie as no added oils, butters, or sauces are required to keep the food moist, since the juices from the meat help. To really take advantage of slow cooker, make sure you add a lot of ingredients to cook in bulk, then store the left overs in the fridge or freezer. That way, you can take them to work, or eat later as a quick snack on the go. Healthy slow cooker recipes that are so easy and tasty: Slow cooker recipe #1: Tri-tip beef with vegetables Course: Main Dish Prep Time: 2 minutes Cook Time: 7 hours Servings: 7 INGREDIENTS - 2 1/4 lbs tri-tip beef (pre-seasoned or add your favorite spices) - 1/4 cup Water - 1 chopped red onion - 2 cups baby carrots - 2 cups cauliflower (chopped) - 2 cups broccoli (chopped) INSTRUCTIONS 1. Add the tri-tip beef to the slow cooker. 2. Add a 1/4 cup of water. 3. Then add as many vegetables as you like. We usually add a combination of chopped onion, baby carrots, cauliflower, and broccoli. 4. Put the lid on the slow cooker and set the timer for 7 hours. 5. You're done. Nutrition Info (per serving): - Calories: 383 - Protein: 43g - Carbohydrates: 10g - Fat: 19g One of the best features about using your slow cooker is that you literally don’t have to touch it during the hours it’s cooking. There’s little to no chance it’s going to burn, as long as you use enough liquid, since the heat turns off automatically when the timer is done. Once the tri-tip beef is finished cooking, the meat just falls apart, and makes the whole house smell so good. This slow cooker recipe is just awesome. Slow cooker recipe #2: Pork tenderloin with vegetables Course: Main Dish Prep Time: 2 minutes Cook Time: 6 hours Servings: 8 INGREDIENTS - 3 lbs pork loin - 24 oz tomato sauce (with olive oil, not soybean oil) - 2 sliced Zucchini - 1 head cauliflower (chopped) - 2 tbsp dried basil INSTRUCTIONS 1. Add the pork loin to your slow cooker. 2. Add in a healthy olive oil based tomato sauce that uses all natural ingredients. Make sure your tomato sauce does not contain soybean oil. 3. Add 2 sliced zucchinis and a head of chopped cauliflower. However, feel free to use any of your favorite chopped vegetables. 4. Add 2 tbsp of basil to give it an incredible flavor. 5. Stir it up to make sure the tomato sauce is covering all the ingredients. 6. Add the top to the slow cooker, set the timer for 6 hours, and you're done. Nutrition Info: (per serving): - Calories: 356 - Protein: 45g - Carbohydrates: 8g - Fat: 16g No more excuses about not having enough time to cook. The main reason is that the simple carbs in bread prevent calcium from being digested properly and bringing help to your nervous and cardiovascular systems. Moreover, if you add instant coffee, there will be no benefit to your health at all! - The latest research actually shows that combining these two vegetables can disturb the biochemical pathways of your body. This can lead to excessive calcination and swelling, and the vitamins contained in both vegetables won’t be digested properly. Above all, these products have different digestion time, which again, confuses the system. - Potatoes with meat: the starch contained in potatoes demands alkalotic digestive fluids, and the proteins from meat demand acidic ones. So, when put together, they just get stuck inside your stomach and can bring such disorders as heartburn, belching, gas, and many others. - Just like with potatoes and meat, the same reasoning applies to minced meat with pasta. The salivary glands produce ptyalin and amylase, which transform the starch carbs in pasta into simple sugars. - Salty products contain a lot of sodium, so your body increases the fluid loss, and you get thirsty. That increases the likelihood of having more and more pints of beer. On the other hand, beer, as the third most consumed drink in the world after water and tea, has a couple of bad effects on your system as well. - Pineapple and dairy don't really go well together. Sour fruits make your digestion work slower, especially in the morning. Besides, pineapple contains bromelain, an enzymic complex which can cause intoxication when combined with dairy products. - Combining bananas with milk, as a smoothie or milkshake may disturb your digestion process as well as your sleep pattern. Also, different flavors of these products confuse your digestion system and result in different kinds of imbalances. He trains hard, he works hard, but more than anything, Jay Cutler eats. A lot. "Cooking and eating is five to six hours of my day, no question," Jay says. "If you follow me around for a day or two, you'll see that most of my time is spent eating meals." Food is Jay's biggest expense, his biggest time-sink—and one of the main reasons he's been so monumentally successful. Eating so much so often is Jay's biggest challenge. "The hardest part about being the competitive bodybuilder Jay Cutler is the amount of calories I need to eat," he says. Most bodybuilders love to eat; they crave food. Not Jay: "I have zero cravings and zero anticipation for any meal. I don't look forward to food." Jay may not love it, but he still has to eat every three hours. He eats at midnight, again at three a.m., and then he eats his breakfast at six a.m. "The consumption of food remains consistent, and I still can't eat enough," Jay says. When he's training for a contest, Jay likes to stay home to prepare his food, leaving nothing to chance. "I like to weigh everything," he says. "[Precontest], I take my diet very seriously." Nonetheless, Jay's immense caloric expenditure means he eats food that most clean eaters would avoid. "Having a turkey sandwich and some potato chips is great for me," he says. "I'll have a Snickers bar every once in a while." To keep his size, Jay also needs a pretty consistent fuel of insulin-stoking simple carbohydrates. "Dense, fibrous carbs don't hit my body hard enough." He may not like having to eat as much or as often as he does, but Jay has the experience and willpower to do it well. Based on the MIND diet, this brain bowl is easy to prepare and packed with nutrients proven to aid in brain health. Sweet potatoes are rich in fiber and full of mineral-rich vitamins that are easily absorbed by the body, which makes them not only filling but also helps lower cholesterol. Quinoa is a plant-based protein, an excellent replacement for animal proteins, and can provide 60% of your daily recommended manganese. This superfood also helps lower blood pressure, which is great for the brain! Put all that on a bed of kale, which contains lots of brain-boosting omega-3 fatty acids as well as vitamins A and C, and you've got a meal chock-full of healthy benefits. INGREDIENTS: Brain bowl: 1 large sweet potato or two small ones, skinned and sliced into ½ inch thick slices 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) 1 (15-ounce) can chickpeas, drained and rinsed 1 tsp. each of turmeric, coriander, cumin 1/2 tsp. each smoked paprika, garlic powder, cayenne (optional) 1 cup uncooked quinoa ¼ tsp. turmeric powder 1/8 tsp. salt 3 cups of kale, massaged with a teaspoon of lemon juice and a pinch of salt (or spring mix) 1 avocado, sliced 2 tbsp. sunflower seeds 1 tbsp. hemp seeds Lemon tahini herb sauce: 1 garlic glove, chopped ¼ cup tahini 2 tbsp. dill ½ lemon, juiced ¼ cup hot water Directions: Combine all ingredients and chill before serving with the Brain Bowl. PREPARATION: 1. Preheat oven to 375ºF and line a large baking sheets with parchment paper. 2. Spread out the chopped sweet potato on one half of sheet. Put 1/2 tablespoon of oil and toss the potatoes until coated. Sprinkle with fine grain sea salt. 3. Roasted chickpeas: drain and rinse the chickpeas. Transfer the chickpeas to a bowl, drizzle with 1/2 teaspoon oil, and sprinkle with the spices. Toss gently to combine. Transfer to the other half of the baking sheet next to sweet potatoes, spreading it in one layer. 4. Place both the sweet potato and chickpeas into the preheated oven. Bake for 15 minutes, then remove and flip the sweet potato pieces (for even cooking, but not necessary). Place back in the oven for another 15 minutes. When the chickpeas are golden and the sweet potatoes are lightly browned on the bottom and fork tender, they are ready. 5. Cook the quinoa: rinse the quinoa very well in a fine mesh sieve and transfer to a medium pot. Add 1 3/4 cups water and bring to a simmer over medium-high heat. Add ½ tsp of turmeric and 1/8 tsp of salt. Reduce heat to medium, cover with a tight-fitting lid, and cook for 13-16 minutes, until the water is absorbed and the quinoa is tender and fluffy. Once cooked, fluff with a fork and remove from heat. Season with black pepper, optionally. 6. Assemble the bowl: greens at one quarter of a large shallow bowl, quinoa on the second quarter, roasted veggies and chickpeas in the rest of the bowl. Add the sliced avocado in the center, and drizzle about 2 tablespoons of the dressing. Sprinkle with sunflower and hemp seeds. Whichever the case may be, I'll recommend you sit tight as I walk you through just about everything you need to know. First off, the one-meal-a-day diet is exactly what it sounds like — it's a plan that restricts you to just one meal a day. In essence, you'll get to eat whatever you want but of course, you can't go beyond a single meal. For the most part, the diet plan is created to challenge your traditional views on food intake and nutrition. And according to a few doctors, it could be the key to sustainable weight loss. Well, guess what? I decided to try the diet plan for 30 days and figured I should make this video to let you in on the pros and cons. Of course, at the end of the day, you'll decide if the plan is for you or not. Let's jump right in! Pros • It's simple and straightforward As mentioned earlier, the one-meal-a-day diet comes with one simple rule — just eat one meal a day and you're good! Essentially, there's no need for calorie counting, complex meal planning or special ingredients, weighing and the likes. You just have to stick to the simple rule! • You'll get to eat all your favorite food This is perhaps the biggest highlight of the one-meal-a-day diet — it gives you the freedom to eat whatever you want, say sweet potato chips, ice-cream, cheeseburgers and more. Well, I wouldn't recommend you eat everything at once though! • Reduced appetite Well, I don't know if you're going to experience this but I discovered that after fasting for most of the day, I didn't have the urge to eat too much afterward. Well, at this point, I'll just stick to the claims that fasting shrinks your stomach and make you want to eat less. You can give the plan a shot and of course, see if you feel the same way. • Sustainable weight loss Finally, the whole idea of eating one meal a day can be incredibly effective for weight loss. But of course there's a pretty reasonable catch — you have to try not to overeat at your one meal. Remember, weight loss is the plan, so do your best to stick to it! Cons • Hunger Pains Yes, this is clearly the biggest drawback of the one-meal-a-day diet. To be honest, I felt the hunger pains at first but of course, it got better as I grew more used to the routine. So what's the point? Well, the diet plan requires you to tolerate a certain level of hunger right off the bat; this is the only way to start the journey and stick with it! Note: I wouldn't recommend you try the one-meal-a-day diet if you're prone to binge eating — you may actually end up seeing little to no result. • Low energy levels As most of us know, any diet that restricts your calories can make you feel lethargic. When you start the one-meal-a-day plan, there's a good chance of feeling more tired than usual — I also experienced it. What's more, people who rely on sugary snacks to get an energy boost may find it hard to stick with the plan. Parting Words The one-meal-a-day diet plan is clearly not for everyone but, of course, you won't be wrong to try it if you can keep up with the rule. After 30 days on the one-meal-a-day diet plan, I actually lost a couple of pounds and I felt really good about it! Who wouldn't? Certain foods are packed with nutrients that stabilise blood sugar levels, protect your heart, and even save your vision from the damaging effects of diabetes. These top 10 foods can help you in controlling Diabetes. Spinach The American Diabetes Association calls spinach a diabetes super food and recommends that you regularly include this dark green leafy non-starchy vegetable in your diet. Besides being rich in vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals, spinach possesses a low glycemic index, which means eating it will help support healthy and stable blood glucose levels. Spinach is low in carbohydrates, containing only 0.83 grams per cup. The fact that spinach contains so few carbohydrates makes it an excellent choice on a diabetes diet. Broccoli Broccoli contains a compound called sulforaphane, which triggers several anti-inflammatory processes that improve blood sugar control and protect blood vessels from the cardiovascular damage that’s often a consequence of diabetes. Olive oil Olive oil is recognized as one of the healthiest edible oils since it contains less saturated fats. It is rich in Omega 9 and Omega 3 which help maintain the flexibility of blood vessels, allowing good blood flow. Olive oil, especially extra virgin, contains tyrosol phenolic compounds such as oleuropein and oleocanthal. These compounds are nature’s most powerful anti-oxidants. Sweet potatoes Sweet potatoes are a good carbohydrate choice for diabetics. The glycemic index of sweet potatoes is a lot lower, which is better for diabetes control, according to a 2002 article in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition." Eating sweet potatoes in moderate amounts will help you keep your blood sugar levels in the healthy range even if you have diabetes. Avocados Avocados are an excellent choice for people with diabetes because they are very rich in dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals and packed with numerous health benefiting plant nutrients.
