Turmeric and arthritis | Why Turmeric is useful in managing Arthritis

Turmeric and Arthritis | Why Turmeric is useful in managing Arthritis Visit http://goo.gl/j1NJgw to know more about Arthritis pain management "Turmeric, Curcumin, And Rheumatoid Arthritis" According to the World Health Organization, 80% of the Earth's inhabitants rely upon traditional medicines for their primary health-care needs, in part due to the high cost of Western pharmaceuticals.Medicines derived from plants have played a pivotal role in the health care of both ancient and modern cultures. One of the prime sources of plant-derived medicines is spices. Turmeric is one such spice known around the world by different names. Turmeric is the dried powdered root stalks of the turmeric plant, a member of the ginger family, from which the orange-yellow pigment curcumin can be extracted. The spice turmeric is what makes curry powder yellow, and curcumin is what makes turmeric yellow. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic is a systemic inflammatory disorder that causes progressive destruction of the cartilage and bone of joints. The long-term prognosis of RA is poor with as much as 80% of patients affected becoming disabled with a reduction of years in life expectancy. There's lots of drugs one can take, but unfortunately they're often associated with severe side effects including blood loss, and bone loss, and bone marrow suppression, and toxicity to the liver and eyes. There's got to be a better way. Well, efficacy of curcumin was first demonstrated over 30 years ago. Forty-five patients diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis were randomized into three groups: curcumin, the standard of care drug, or both. The primary endpoint was a reduction in disease activity, as well as a reduction in joint tenderness and swelling. All three groups got better, but interestingly the curcumin groups showed the highest percentage of improvement, significantly better than those in the drug group. The findings are significant, demonstrating that curcumin alone was not only safe and effective, but surprisingly more effective in alleviating any pain compared to the leading drug of choice, all without any apparent adverse side effects. In fact curcumin appeared protective, given that there were more adverse reactions in the drug group than the combined drug and curcumin group. In contrast to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, curcumin has no gastrointestinal side effects and may even protect the lining of the stomach. ======================================================= Related videos Why Arthritis Causes Pain https://youtu.be/ooDzTErR3iI How to Choose A Pair of Compression Gloves https://youtu.be/cydMzegFTOg 7 foods to avoid in arthritis https://youtu.be/j1kP6I-YWqA Arthritis Pain Relief In 9 Simple Ways | Arthritis Treatment Natural Way https://youtu.be/x7Q9n8JLZRw Arthritis facts | Seven Facts About Arthritis | Rheumatoid Arthritis Facts https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HriWKghw81k ======================================================= Read interesting articles on Best Compression Gloves What is Arthritis: http://bestcompressiongloves.com/what-is-arthritis/ Why Compression Gloves Are Really Helpful in Treatment For Arthritis? http://bestcompressiongloves.com/why-compression-gloves-are-really-helpful-in-treatment-for-arthritis/ 5 Simple Things You Can Do to Help in Treatment For Arthritis: http://bestcompressiongloves.com/5-things-you-can-do-to-help-treatment-for-arthritis/ Visit http://bestcompressiongloves.com for more arthritis related news. Then out of the lab into the clinic with attempts to test the ability of turmeric extracts to treat joint inflammation with Turmeric Curcumin and Rheumatoid Arthritis (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/turmeric-curcumin-and-rheumatoid-arthritis) and Turmeric Curcumin and Osteoarthritis (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/turmeric-curcumin-and-osteoarthritis). My last video, Boosting the Bioavailability of Curcumin (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/boosting-the-bioavailability-of-curcumin), discussed ways to improve the absorption of these anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds. I wish there was more science on wheatgrass. I just had that one unhelpful anecdote in my video How Much Broccoli Is Too Much? (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/how-much-broccoli-is-too-much/) There is good science on flax though. See: • Flax Seeds For Breast Pain (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/flax-seeds-for-breast-pain) • Breast Cancer Survival and Lignan Intake (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/breast-cancer-survival-and-lignan-intake/) • Flax and Fecal Flora (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/flax-and-fecal-flora/) • Prostate vs. Plants (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/prostate-versus-plants/) • A Better Breakfast (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/a-better-breakfast/) • Flaxseeds vs. Chia Seeds (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/flaxseeds-vs-chia-seeds/) More on gallbladder health can be found in my video Cholesterol Gallstones (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/cholesterol-gallstones/). And those who are susceptible to kidney stones should try to alkalinize their urine by eating lots of dark green leafy vegetables (but then shouldn't we all :). See Testing Your Diet with Pee & Purple Cabbage (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/testing-your-diet-with-pee-purple-cabbage/). Based on this new science on turmeric (lots more to come!), I now try to include it in my family's daily diet. Have a question for Dr. Greger about this video? Follow us on Twitter: @foods4health1 Recipes4Health: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2bZhXBHIb51n1fE3VWPmcQ/videos To learn more about the health benefits of food, visit: http://www.benefitsoffood.blogspot.com 1. First, one important reason to combine these two ingredients and consume them is that they enhance the health promoting abilities of each other. In fact, black pepper will enhance the bioavailability of turmeric. Curcumin has low levels of bioavailability, and because of this, much of the curcumin we consume is metabolized before it can be absorbed. Piperine has been found to make curcumin more bioavailable which allows us to absorb more of it and get its full healing and health promoting affects. 2. Eating turmeric mixed with black pepper also has tremendous anti-inflammatory affects for our bodies. This mixture is a known anti-inflammatory powerhouse and can be especially helpful for those individuals suffering from symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Curcumin is well known as a natural anti-inflammatory compound and for its anti-inflammatory affects. It reduces inflammation throughout our entire body and targets and fights inflammation at the molecular level. Curcumin can actually inhibit many of the molecules know to play a role in causing inflammation. Black pepper contains many different antioxidants which is great for reducing inflammation. These antioxidants in black pepper can help to both prevent and repair damage cause by free radicals and neutralize damaging compounds in our bodies, reducing inflammation in the process. 3. This mixture may also have benefits for certain types of cancer and may even reduce the risk of developing certain cancers. Studies have shown that curcumin can have positive affects on preventing cancer. Again, this is often attributed to several benefits curcumin provides at the molecular level which are enhanced by black pepper due to its absorption enhancing properties. Turmeric also provides many different nutrients and antioxidants which reduce damaging free radicals. Black pepper may also help in this regard to the polyphenols in contains. Discuss with your medical practitioner other cancer treatment and prevention methods. 4. Eating turmeric and black pepper can also have benefits for our overall heart health and reduce the risk of heart disease. Curcumin may actually help to not only reduce the risk of heart disease, but also reverse many of the steps in the heart disease process. Curcumin is unique in that it can help to improve the function and health of our blood vessels. This allows turmeric to help with the regulation of blood pressure and blood clotting. Turmeric also reduces inflammation as well as oxidation, two factors which may lead to heart disease. As well, since turmeric and black pepper contains curcumin and piperine, this can also help to reduce “bad” LDL cholesterol as well as reduce triglyceride levels in the body. 5. Lastly, combining and consuming turmeric mixed with black pepper can also have benefits for cognitive function and may even reduce the risk of developing certain cognitive diseases, such as dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Turmeric can help to reduce inflammation and oxidation that can lead to these neurodegenerative disease. As well, it can help to reduce the build-up of Amyloid plaques, which may cause these diseases. Black pepper can also improve cognitive function. Studies have shown that the compounds and components in black pepper can help to reduce memory impairment and cognitive malfunction. As well, piperine may be able to help stimulate chemical pathways in the body, which may help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Again, discuss with your medical practitioner other treatment and prevention methods when it comes to this complicated disease and to make sure this mixture is safe for you. Small dosages of these two spices is often recommended when consuming them consistently. One-half to one teaspoon of turmeric is recommended with just a pinch of black pepper when consuming regularly. DISCLAIMER: This video is for educational and informational purposes only. Speeding Recovery from Surgery with Turmeric

The anti-inflammatory effect of curcumin, the pigment in the spice turmeric, was put to the test to see if it could reduce postoperative pain and fatigue after surgery. (All proceeds Dr. Greger receives from the sales of his books, DVDs, and speaking engagements go to support the 501c3 nonprofit that runs NutritionFacts.org.) Here’s the video I mentioned on preventing gallstones in the first place: Cholesterol Gallstones (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/cholesterol-gallstones/). The “p value” I mention in the video refers to a measure of the strength of evidence. The smaller it is, the stronger the evidence is that the result they found didn’t just happen by chance. By convention, a p value under 0.05 is considered small enough for a result to be considered statistically significant. This means that you’d only expect to find a result that remarkable simply by coincidence 5% of the time, or in 1 out of 20 cases. So, a p value like the one in the study, less than .000, suggests you’d have to run the experiment thousands of times before you’d come up with such a dramatic result just by chance. Turmeric and Coconut Milk aka Golden Milk as Cure for Inflammation

04:25
Turmeric and Coconut Milk aka Golden Milk as Cure for Inflammation If you’re used to drinking a hot cup of chamomile tea to end your day, here’s something that’s even better: golden milk. This beverage is so soothing that many people love drinking it before they go to bed. But this doesn’t mean that you can’t drink it in the morning. In fact, it is a great replacement for coffee. What is the Golden Milk? If you’re lactose intolerant, golden milk isn’t a dairy product, but is actually a combination of turmeric spice and coconut milk (sometimes coconut oil). Turmeric is popular because it is responsible for the golden color in curry dishes, but it is also well-known for its ingredient called curcumin, which has many health benefits, including: • The ability to modulate about 700 genes • Makes cell membranes more organized • Affects several signaling molecules, such as inflammatory molecules, DNA and RNA, histone, and cell survival proteins Turmeric’s curcumin is technically the most studied spice in the world and has been proven to contain potent anti-inflammatory properties – it could even beat some known drugs. There are many chronic diseases are caused by inflammation, including diabetes, heart attack, and rheumatoid arthritis. And if you’re looking for more reasons why you should start sipping on golden milk, here are the benefits you can gain from this drink: • Maintain healthy cholesterol levels • Suppress type 2 diabetes symptoms • Stop platelet clumping • Prevent rheumatoid arthritis symptoms Enhance healing of wounds Protect the body against liver damage Prohibit formation of tumors Protect the eyes against problems, such as cataracts Increase production of bile Stop replication of HIV virus There are many ways to make golden milk, but the most popular is the combination of turmeric and coconut milk. You can add coconut oil or you can substitute the milk with oil. With the benefits laid out, here’s how you can make golden milk at home. The ingredients to make turmeric paste are: • ¼ cup of turmeric powder • Half a teaspoon of ground black pepper • Half a cup of water (must be filtered) Using the ingredients above, make the paste with the following steps: 1. Combine all the ingredients in a small saucepan. 2. Use medium-high heat while mixing the ingredients. 3. Stir constantly until you get a thick paste. 4. Let the mixture cool and store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. As for the milk, you will need: • One cup of coconut milk • One teaspoon of virgin coconut oil (optional) • At least ¼ teaspoon of the turmeric paste described above • Raw, unpasteurized honey Make the milk with the following steps: 1. Leaving the honey behind, combine the ingredients in a saucepan. 2. Cook them in medium hit. 3. Stir until the mixture is hot, but make sure it is not boiling. 4. Let the milk cool down, then add the turmeric paste. You can also add cinnamon and/or stevia in place of honey, which will even boost the benefits. How To Reduce Inflammation And Boost Your Immune System With Turmeric

05:23
How To Reduce Inflammation And Boost Your Immune System With Turmeric Stop Irritating, Painful Chronic Inflammation In Its Tracks With The All-Natural Ingredients In Inflammation Relief To Fight Back Against Inflammation Related Health Issues - http://truthnutra.com/inflammation-relief-yt Inflammation Relief contains the exact clinical dosages of 7 potent all-natural compounds that shut down the inflammation response in the body FAST. Inflammation manifests itself differently depending on many individual factors, but most people experience gut problems like IBS and food intolerances, joint pain, excess stress, unexplained fatigue, insomnia, arthritis, and brain fog. In fact, inflammation is at the root of MOST diseases. By taking Inflammation Relief daily, you begin to support: Turn Off The “Inflammatory Cytokine” Response: cytokines are chiefly responsible for the signaling of the inflammation response by the immune system. When the immune system is threatened, it signals for this response. However, when you’re chronically inflamed due to modern exposures, the body quickly starts to deteriorate into poor health. “Calm” these cytokines down safely and quickly with the compounds in Inflammation Relief Restore Gut Health: since most issues begin in the gut, a majority of people with excess inflammation experience gut problems and irregularities at one point or another. Some of it even becomes chronic and turns into serious issues like IBS and UC. Restore your gut health by controlling this immune inflammation response naturally Reduce Stress Reactions: All the ingredients in this formula have potent anti-anxiety and depression-reducing abilities, but unlike prescription medications, they do not have negative side effects or cause unwanted drowsiness. Boost Immune System Function: Studies have demonstrated that ingredients in Inflammation Relief have immune-enhancing abilities that may help destroy dangerous bacteria, viruses and even cancers. They can be used to prevent germs from forming on the skin and mouth while keeping “bad” bacteria low in your gut. Reduce Pain: The ingredients in this formula can inhibit the production of key inflammatory molecules associated with conditions like arthritis, asthma, painful disorders like IBS and many more conditions. They can be useful in helping prevent the breakdown of the cartilage tissue and have been shown to significantly reduce levels of dangerous and painful inflammation, making this a natural treatment option for pain-related conditions that affect the muscles, joints and tendons. The best part about Inflammation Relief is that it’s 100% natural. INGREDIENTS Vitamin B12, Frankincense, Bromelain, Olive Leaf Extract, Turmeric, & Vitamin B6 Vitamin B12 Vitamin B12 is an incredible anti-inflammatory and energy-giving compound. Low B12 - the most common deficiency in the world - is associated with the proinflammatory cytokine response. Correcting B12 deficiency with a bioavailable B12 supplement source can “turn off” this inflammation response FAST. Frankincense Frankincense can inhibit the production of key inflammatory molecules associated with conditions like arthritis, asthma, painful disorders like IBS and many more conditions. It also has many benefits including improving immune function, better sleep, balancing hormone levels, easing digestion, and healing skin. Bromelain Due to its powerful anti-inflammatory characteristics, bromelain is fantastic for reducing acute or chronic joint pain. The journal Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine published a research trial that evaluated 42 osteoarthritis patients with degenerative spine or painful joint conditions. Olive Leaf Extract Arthritis is a joint issue that causes swelling and pain in the joints; the key word here is swelling — which means inflammation. Because the olive leaf is such a potent anti-inflammatory agent, it may work as a natural arthritis remedy. Studies have shown that olive leaf extracts cuts down on the chronic pain that is associated with osteoarthritis, and it reduces the production of cytokines and enzymes that are markers for the inflammatory process. Vitamin B6 Low levels of vitamin B6 have been associated with increased symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), including more severe pain. Certain early studies are finding that people with RA may need more vitamin B6 than healthy people because they experience ongoing muscle aches and joint pain due to chronic inflammation. Vitamin B6 benefits include curbing pain and may be useful in supplement form for controlling aches in the muscles and joints due to arthritis. Turmeric The journal Oncogene published the results of a study that evaluated several anti-inflammatory compounds and found that aspirin and ibuprofen, two of the most common NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) are least effective, while curcumin is among the most effective anti-inflammatory compounds in the world.

Turmeric or Curcumin: Plants vs. Pills

Curcumin-free turmeric, from which the so-called active ingredient has been removed, may be as effective or even more potent. Turmeric Curcumin and Pancreatic Cancer

Carcinogens in grilled and baked chicken may increase the risk of pancreatic cancer, while curcumin, the yellow pigment in the spice turmeric, may sometimes help even in advanced stages of the disease. Subscribe to Dr. Greger’s free nutrition newsletter at https://www.nutritionfacts.org/subscribe and get a free recipe from his new HOW NOT TO DIE COOKBOOK. (All proceeds Dr. Greger receives from the sales of his books, DVDs, and speaking engagements go to support the 501c3 nonprofit that runs NutritionFacts.org.) My grandfather died of pancreatic cancer. By the time the first symptom arose—a dull ache in his gut—it was too late. That’s why we need to prevent it in the first place. I previously touched on pancreatic cancer prevention in Largest Study Ever (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/largest-study-ever/) and Poultry Exposure Tied to Liver and Pancreatic Cancer (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/poultry-exposure-tied-to-liver-and-pancreatic-cancer/) and attempts at pancreatic cancer treatment in Gerson Therapy for Cancer (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/gerson-therapy-for-cancer/) and Gerson-style Therapy vs. Chemotherapy (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/gerson-therapy-vs-chemotherapy/). Boosting the Bioavailability of Curcumin

Subscribe to Dr. Greger’s free nutrition newsletter at https://www.nutritionfacts.org/subscribe and get a free recipe from his new HOW NOT TO DIE COOKBOOK. (All proceeds Dr. Greger receives from the sales of his books, DVDs, and speaking engagements go to support the 501c3 nonprofit that runs NutritionFacts.org.) DESCRIPTION: Dietary strategies, including the use of black pepper (piperine), can boost blood levels of curcumin from the spice turmeric by up to 2,000%. Why would we care about boosting curcumin levels? I started talking about this golden spice pigment in Which Spices Fight Inflammation? (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/which-spices-fight-inflammation) and Spicing Up DNA Protection (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/spicing-up-dna-protection) and then moved on to treating actual clinical conditions in Turmeric Curcumin and Rheumatoid Arthritis (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/turmeric-curcumin-and-rheumatoid-arthritis) and Turmeric Curcumin and Osteoarthritis (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/turmeric-curcumin-and-osteoarthritis). Next I'll end this video series with some cautionary notes in Who Shouldn't Consume Curcumin or Turmeric (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/who-shouldnt-consume-curcumin-or-turmeric). I've previously covered this topic of food synergy in videos such as Apples and Oranges: Dietary Diversity (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/apples-and-oranges-dietary-diversity/) and Garden Variety Anti-Inflammation (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/garden-variety-anti-inflammation/) that emphasize the importance of eating a variety of plant foods to take advantage of some of these interactions. The black pepper mechanism reminds me of the grapefruit (Tell Your Doctor If You Eat Grapefruit, http://nutritionfacts.org/video/tell-your-doctor-if-you-eat-grapefruit/) and broccoli (The Best Detox, http://nutritionfacts.org/video/the-best-detox/) stories. A testament to the power of plants (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/power-plants/). The painkilling properties of aspirin mentioned in the video are actually found throughout the plant kingdom: Aspirin Levels in Plant Foods (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/aspirin-levels-in-plant-foods/). In some circumstances, traditional medicine wisdom seems incredible (Tomato Effect, http://nutritionfacts.org/video/the-tomato-effect); in others, dangerous (Get the Lead Out, http://nutritionfacts.org/video/get-the-lead-out). But that's what we now have science for! Have a question for Dr. Greger about this video? What is Turmeric Good For? 10 Turmeric Health Benefits

04:22
Lots of people use the turmeric herb in their cooking. The main signs of turmeric are its pepper- like smell, sharp taste, and golden color. Turmeric is known to stop swelling, kill bacteria and viruses, as well as many other things. It is also full of nutrients, like protein, dietary fiber, niacin, Vitamins C, E, and K, calcium, potassium, copper, iron, magnesium, and zinc. Because of this, turmeric is a great thing to use to cure health problems. Here are the top ten things turmeric can be used for: Prevents Cancer Turmeric can block prostate cancer and even kill cancer cells. It can also stop tumor cells from growing, so it can guard the body from getting cancer in the first place. Relieves Arthritis Because turmeric brings down swelling, it’s great to use for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It also kills germs that harm body cells. People with rheumatoid arthritis who eat turmeric all the time have gotten much rest from pain and joint swelling. Controls Diabetes Turmeric can help cure diabetes, by keeping insulin at normal levels. It also helps with sugar control, and makes the medicine used for diabetes work. But if used with strong medicines, turmeric can cause low blood sugar, so make sure to ask your doctor before you take turmeric capsules. Reduces Cholesterol Levels Using turmeric as a spice can bring down cholesterol levels. Because high cholesterol can cause other health problems, it is important to stay on top of it to stop heart disease. Immunity Booster Turmeric helps keep the body’s immune system going. It also helps strengthen the immune system, because it kills bacteria, viruses, and fungi. This stops you from getting colds, coughs, and the flu. To help you feel better if you do get sick, mix one teaspoon of turmeric in a glass of warm milk and drink it once a day. Heals Wounds Because turmeric naturally kills germs and bacteria, it can be used to clean wounds. If you have a cut or burn, sprinkle some turmeric powder on it to help it heal quicker. It can also help treat psoriasis- itchy, dead skin- and other skin conditions. Weight Management Turmeric powder can help keep the body at a proper weight, by helping break down fat. Someone who wants to lose weight or treat obesity and sicknesses that come with it, can have one teaspoon of turmeric with every meal. Prevents Alzheimer’s Disease Swelling of the brain is one of the main reasons for cognitive disorders, like Alzheimer’s disease. Turmeric can keep the brain healthy, by helping oxygen flow. This can also slow down or totally stop Alzheimer’s disease. Improves Digestion Turmeric can help with digestion, by lessening bloating and gas. It can also help treat inflammatory bowel disease. But be careful, because if you suffer from a gallbladder disease you should not take turmeric, as that can make it worse. Also, if you have a digestive problem, it is best to eat raw turmeric, and not capsules. Prevents Liver Disease Turmeric is a natural way to force poisons from the liver. The liver takes poison out of the blood, and turmeric helps make the enzymes that keep it working. It also helps strengthen, and better blood flow. All of this helps to keep the liver healthy. Because of all the ways turmeric can help your health, adding this herb to your diet is a great idea. Have a question for Dr. Greger about this video? Leave it in the comment section at http://nutritionfacts.org/video/treating-alzheimers-with-turmeric/ and he'll try to answer it! What role might turmeric play in preventing Alzheimer’s in the first place? See my previous video Preventing Alzheimer's with Turmeric (http://www.nutritionfacts.org/video/Preventing-Alzheimers-with-Turmeric). I’ve previously addressed the thorny issue of patenting natural plant remedies in my video: Plants as Intellectual Property – Patently Wrong? (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/plants-as-intellectual-property-patently-wrong/) The whole-greater-than-the-sum-of-its-parts theme is one that comes up over and over: • Broccoli: Sprouts vs. Supplements (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/broccoli-sprouts-vs-supplements/) • Treating Asthma With Plants vs. Supplements? It may help fight arthritis (Turmeric Curcumin and Rheumatoid Arthritis http://nutritionfacts.org/video/turmeric-curcumin-and-rheumatoid-arthritis/ and Turmeric Curcumin and Osteoarthritis http://nutritionfacts.org/video/turmeric-curcumin-and-osteoarthritis/) and cancer: • Back to Our Roots: Curry and Cancer (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/back-to-our-roots-curry-and-cancer/) • Carcinogenic Blocking Effects of Turmeric (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/carcinogen-blocking-effects-of-turmeric/) • Turmeric Curcumin Reprogramming Cancer Cell Death (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/turmeric-curcumin-reprogramming-cancer-cell-death/) • Turmeric Curcumin and Colon Cancer (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/turmeric-curcumin-and-colon-cancer/) • Topical Application of Turmeric Curcumin for Cancer (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/topical-application-of-turmeric-curcumin-for-cancer/) But it’s not for everyone: Who Shouldn’t Consume Curcumin or Turmeric?
