Economic Systems and Macroeconomics: Crash Course Economics #3

10:18
In which Jacob Clifford and Adriene Hill teach you about Economic Systems and Macroeconomics. So, economics is basically about choices. We'll look at some of the broadest economic choices when we talk about the difference between planned economies and market economies. We'll get into communism, socialism, command economies, and capitalism. We'll look at how countries choose the kind of system they're going to use (spoiler alert: many end up with mixed economies). We'll also look into how individuals make economic choices. Crash Course is now on Patreon! Needs versus wants - GetWise | ASB

01:31
Teaching kids about money - Needs versus wants. Thanks to the ABS GetWise programme, we've helped over 400,000 Kiwi kids become cash clever. Watch more ASB money tips at http://asb.co/asbmoneytips or find out more on GetWise at https://www.asb.co.nz/getwise An important money skill to teach children is the difference between needs and wants. But for children that can be tricky. Put simply, a need is something you must have to survive, like food, water and a home. A want is something that's nice to have, but you can actually live without, like an ice cream or a new skateboard. Watch the other ASB GetWise videos for more fun ways to help your children learn about money. Some mountain students have been busy as Santa's elves. In our Never Stop Learning, we find out why.Students at Hendersonville Elementary School are making items they plan to sell at the schools market day on Friday.Teachers say it's a great way for students to learn about economics. They are responsible for designing a product, making it and then advertising. The secret they say to a good business is to figure out what the buyer wants and then make sure it's affordable. Students hope to raise between $400 and $700, which will go to a local charity. The 5th grade classes got a grant from the Hendersonville Rotary Club to buy the start up supplies.

Not only will you be a multi-digit addition and subtraction rockstar, but you'll extend the multiplication and division that you started in 3rd grade to several digits. You'll also discover that you sometimes have something left over (called a "remainder") when you divide. In 3rd grade you learned what a fraction is. Now you'll start adding, subtracting, multiplying, and comparing them. You'll also see how they relate to decimals. On other fronts, you'll learn how to convert between different units (which is super important when comparing the size and speed of robot unicorns in different countries) and continue your journey thinking about various shapes in two dimensions. Some of the foundational concepts of geometry (like lines, rays and angles) also get introduced. As always, we'll round this out with a healthy dose of applied word problems and explorations of number patterns and properties (including the ideas of factors, multiples and prime numbers). The fun must not stop! (Content was selected for this grade level based on a typical curriculum in the United States.) Money and Finance: Crash Course Economics #11

10:36
So, we've been putting off a kind of basic question here. What is money? What is currency? How are the two different. Well, not to give away too much, but money has a few basic functions. It acts as a store of value, a medium of exchange, and as a unit of account. Money isn't just bills and coins. It can be anything that meets these three criteria. In US prisons, apparently, pouches of Mackerel are currency. Yes, mackerel the fish. Paper and coins work as money because they're backed by the government, which is an advantage over mackerel. So, once you've got money, you need finance. We'll talk about borrowing, lending, interest, and stocks and bonds. Also, this episode features a giant zucchini, which Adriene grew in her garden. So that's cool.
