Is Social Media Hurting Your Mental Health? | Bailey Parnell | TEDxRyersonU

14:45
Scrolling through our social media feeds feels like a harmless part of our daily lives. But is it actually as harmless at seems? According to social media expert Bailey Parnell, our growing and unchecked obsession with social media has unintended long term consequences on our mental health. As social media continues to become part of the fabric of modern life – the “digital layer” – abstinence is becoming less of an option. Bailey think it’s high time we learned to practice safe social before it’s too late. What are the common triggers? How are they affecting you over time? How can you create a more positive experience online? Bailey covers this and more in “Is Social Media Hurting Your Mental Health?” Bailey Parnell was recently named one of Canada's Top 100 Most Powerful Women. She is an award-winning digital marketer, public speaker and businesswoman with a talent for helping people tell better stories. Her work and expertise have been featured on CBC, CTV & in other local Toronto media. Bailey recently founded SkillsCamp, a soft skills training company where they help people develop the essential skills needed for professional success. She also currently works in digital marketing at Ryerson University. Bailey is a frequent public speaker having spoken to more than 10 thousand people. She primarily speaks about social media, personal branding, and media and mental health. She guest lectured her first MBA class at 21-years-old and has been the youngest speaker as multiple academic conferences. She is currently pursuing her Masters in Communication and Culture with a research focus on social media and mental health, and holds an honours BA from the RTA School of Media at Ryerson. Misunderstanding Mental Illnesses in Society and on Social Media | Gabriel Garlycia | TEDxYouth@GMIS

07:35
The Distortion of Mental Disorders: This revolves around the idea that our society today constantly euphemisms mental disorders, using words like 'depressed' to describe fleeting sadness, or a serious condition like OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder) to illustrate an excess of organisation or neatness. How these words, which have serious consequences and meaning, are being thrown around in our daily vocabulary when we aren't even psychologically diagnosed with the disorder nor do we show any such prognosis. Why we need to start being careful about labelling ourselves and why it is so important to not be ignorant about the reality of these mental disorders. I'm Gabriel Garlycia, a senior of Gandhi Memorial Intercontinental School. I've lived in a great home with two loving parents and a brother who has always stuck with me through thick and thin, especially when I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2004. With the rise of technological advancements for illnesses and social media, a lot misconceptions also tend to be made about not just diabetes but also mental disorders - something I strive to spread awareness about. A Social Life | Award Winning Short Film | Social Media Depression

08:27
Are you living the life that you post? A Social Life is a short film about a career driven woman named Meredith who's living the life she's always dreamed of... online. Meredith strives to live a balanced life: staying fit, working hard and connecting with her friends; she is creating her "image" within her broader social media friend base. But she awakes one day and realizes that her reflection is merely the collection of photos that she has shared with others. Is this her life? Or just a carefully curated brand? Kerith Lemon is a writer, director and creator with rich experience in multi-platform storytelling and creative narratives. Driven by her passion for stories that emotionally connect, Lemon is drawn to narratives that elevate women, mirror societal complications, and create dialogues amongst a broad audience. Her directorial debut, A Social Life, premiered at the Canberra International Short Film Festival, where it was awarded the prize for Best International Actor and most recently has won Best Ladies First Short at the Lady Filmmakers Festival in Pacific Grove, CA. It will continue to screen at film festivals throughout 2016. How are young people with mental illness treated on social networking websites?

02:14
A film produced by Young Researchers from Arden School: Aidan Allen and Natalya Constantinou. The judges praised Natalya and Aiden for their:"good use of research to indicate the reason for asking their question, and strong focus on the question of how technology can help people with disability." The panel commented that they were: "not initially sure of asking people if social networking could help Beth -- had expected the focus would be on the thoughts of the character with the disability. But wow, what responses -- "Websites like that are supposed to be happy." I think maybe it's only once we find out how people really feel about things that we can do something about it, and this group certainly did that." The panel concluded that the: "Only disappointment was the lack of time in the video to analyse the comments they got -- what the implications were, why people felt that way etc.". Overall an excellent piece of film making by a talented pair of researchers.

Why Social Media May Harm Teen Mental Health

00:48
www.dailyrxnews.com Unlike teenagers, social media never sleeps. But for teens who try to keep up with online accounts 24/7, there may be a price. A new study from Scotland found that the round-the-clock pull of social media sites like Facebook and Twitter may lead to depression, anxiety and poor sleep in teens who feel a compulsion to participate. "Adolescence can be a period of increased vulnerability for the onset of depression and anxiety, and poor sleep quality may contribute to this," said lead study author Heather Cleland Woods, PhD, a professor of psychology at the University of Glasgow, in a press release. "It is important that we understand how social media use relates to these. Evidence is increasingly supporting a link between social media use and well being, particularly during adolescence, but the causes of this are unclear."

Quit social media | Dr. Cal Newport | TEDxTysons

13:51
'Deep work' will make you better at what you do. You will achieve more in less time. And feel the sense of true fulfillment that comes from the mastery of a skill. Cal Newport is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Georgetown University. In addition to studying the theoretical foundations of our digital age, Newport also writes about the impact of these technologies on the world of work. His most recent book, Deep Work, argues that focus is the new I.Q. in the modern workplace and that the ability to concentrate without distraction is becoming increasingly valuable. He previously wrote So Good They Can’t Ignore You, a book which debunks the long-held belief that “follow your passion” is good advice, and three popular books of unconventional advice for students. This video is teaching you and fellow viewers the harsh reality of the stigma attached to mental illness, as well as this it is raising awareness of the terrible portrayals of mental health in the media. I watched many films containing portrayals of mantel illness and through personal experience I have been able to find a film that I believe shows the true facts of a mental illness. This film is The Soloist which is about a man who has schizophrenia and lives on the streets, this films shows the harsh reality of living with a mental illness.
