Is Social Media Hurting Your Mental Health? | Bailey Parnell | TEDxRyersonU
Scrolling through our social media feeds feels like a harmless part of our daily lives. But is it actually as harmless at seems? According to social media expert Bailey Parnell, our growing and unchecked obsession with social media has unintended long term consequences on our mental health. As social media continues to become part of the fabric of modern life – the “digital layer” – abstinence is becoming less of an option. Bailey think it’s high time we learned to practice safe social before it’s too late. What are the common triggers? How are they affecting you over time? How can you create a more positive experience online? Bailey covers this and more in “Is Social Media Hurting Your Mental Health?” Bailey Parnell was recently named one of Canada's Top 100 Most Powerful Women. She is an award-winning digital marketer, public speaker and businesswoman with a talent for helping people tell better stories. Her work and expertise have been featured on CBC, CTV & in other local Toronto media. Bailey recently founded SkillsCamp, a soft skills training company where they help people develop the essential skills needed for professional success. She also currently works in digital marketing at Ryerson University. Bailey is a frequent public speaker having spoken to more than 10 thousand people. She primarily speaks about social media, personal branding, and media and mental health. She guest lectured her first MBA class at 21-years-old and has been the youngest speaker as multiple academic conferences. She is currently pursuing her Masters in Communication and Culture with a research focus on social media and mental health, and holds an honours BA from the RTA School of Media at Ryerson. Misunderstanding Mental Illnesses in Society and on Social Media | Gabriel Garlycia | TEDxYouth@GMIS
The Distortion of Mental Disorders: This revolves around the idea that our society today constantly euphemisms mental disorders, using words like 'depressed' to describe fleeting sadness, or a serious condition like OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder) to illustrate an excess of organisation or neatness. How these words, which have serious consequences and meaning, are being thrown around in our daily vocabulary when we aren't even psychologically diagnosed with the disorder nor do we show any such prognosis. Why we need to start being careful about labelling ourselves and why it is so important to not be ignorant about the reality of these mental disorders. I'm Gabriel Garlycia, a senior of Gandhi Memorial Intercontinental School. I've lived in a great home with two loving parents and a brother who has always stuck with me through thick and thin, especially when I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2004. With the rise of technological advancements for illnesses and social media, a lot misconceptions also tend to be made about not just diabetes but also mental disorders - something I strive to spread awareness about. Why Social Media May Harm Teen Mental Health
www.dailyrxnews.com Unlike teenagers, social media never sleeps. But for teens who try to keep up with online accounts 24/7, there may be a price. A new study from Scotland found that the round-the-clock pull of social media sites like Facebook and Twitter may lead to depression, anxiety and poor sleep in teens who feel a compulsion to participate. "Adolescence can be a period of increased vulnerability for the onset of depression and anxiety, and poor sleep quality may contribute to this," said lead study author Heather Cleland Woods, PhD, a professor of psychology at the University of Glasgow, in a press release. "It is important that we understand how social media use relates to these. Evidence is increasingly supporting a link between social media use and well being, particularly during adolescence, but the causes of this are unclear."

Quit social media | Dr. Cal Newport | TEDxTysons
'Deep work' will make you better at what you do. You will achieve more in less time. And feel the sense of true fulfillment that comes from the mastery of a skill. Cal Newport is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Georgetown University. In addition to studying the theoretical foundations of our digital age, Newport also writes about the impact of these technologies on the world of work. His most recent book, Deep Work, argues that focus is the new I.Q. in the modern workplace and that the ability to concentrate without distraction is becoming increasingly valuable. He previously wrote So Good They Can’t Ignore You, a book which debunks the long-held belief that “follow your passion” is good advice, and three popular books of unconventional advice for students. Young people and mental illness: a growing problem?
It is common nowadays to hear talk of a ‘mental health crisis’ amongst young people, with influential figures and campaigners arguing that various pressures from social media to exams are causing mental health problems. Critics of this trend are, however, wary of drawing more children into a therapeutic relationship with the caring professions, arguing that many problems teenagers face are being unnecessarily medicalised and that therapeutic interventions are more likely to undermine resilience than foster it. How can we ensure that children in genuine need get the help they require without diagnosing an entire generation as mentally ill. Filmed at the Battle of Ideas, the speakers are Sir Simon Wessely, president of the Royal College of Psychiatrists; John Tomsett, author of ‘Mind over Matter: This much I know about the mental health crisis in schools’; Lyn Kendall, series consultant, ‘Child Genius UK’ for Channel 4; Dr Frankie Anderson, psychiatry trainee; Dave Clements, advisor to local government, blogger for the Guardian and Huffington Post. The chair is Beverley Marshall, volunteer, Samaritans. Help us caption & translate this video! http://amara.org/v/1ZSJ/

How are young people with mental illness treated on social networking websites?
A film produced by Young Researchers from Arden School: Aidan Allen and Natalya Constantinou. The judges praised Natalya and Aiden for their:"good use of research to indicate the reason for asking their question, and strong focus on the question of how technology can help people with disability." The panel commented that they were: "not initially sure of asking people if social networking could help Beth -- had expected the focus would be on the thoughts of the character with the disability. But wow, what responses -- "Websites like that are supposed to be happy." I think maybe it's only once we find out how people really feel about things that we can do something about it, and this group certainly did that." The panel concluded that the: "Only disappointment was the lack of time in the video to analyse the comments they got -- what the implications were, why people felt that way etc.". Overall an excellent piece of film making by a talented pair of researchers.

The Stigma of Mental Illness | Sam Cohen | TEDxYouth@SRDS
In this courageous talk, Sam Cohen - a high school sophomore - implores us to treat mental illnesses as the illnesses that they are, and to move forward as a culture in an accepting and nurturing way in treating these illnesses. In her talk, she explores what it means to be mentally ill in our society. Sam Cohen is a high school sophomore finishing up her first year here at SRDS. She is an avid photographer, having graduated a four-week photography program at the New York Film Academy and hopes to one day use her photographs to make a difference in the world. More than anything else, she loves dogs. Here today at TEDxYouth@SRDS, Sam will discuss the stigma surrounding mental illness, and what each of us can do to change things for the better. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
