Major Risk factors for Ischemic heart disease - Dr. Prabhakar Shetty

01:11
There are certain standard well-established risk factors for ischemic heart disease. 5 of them are very well established. They are diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol abnormalities are known as dyslipidemia, smoking and family history of coronary artery disease. These are very strong and well established and there are certain less well established risk factors for coronary artery disease, one of them being stress and we don’t know whether stress plays a direct role, but it is probably an indirect risk factor for coronary artery disease.
6 Things That Happen To Your Body, When You Stop Eating Sugar

6 Things That Happen To Your Body, When You Stop Eating Sugar. https://youtu.be/b3Q-bKYbT1g Sugar is fast becoming the biggest dietary enemy we face. It can be hard to think of a life without sugar as it’s in so much that we eat. There can even be surprisingly high amounts of sugar in foods that are meant to be healthy, like fruit. But what exactly would happen to your body once you cut it out? We looked to science, and here six things you could probably expect: 1) Your skin will look better. The link between diet and acne has been long debated but the latest research suggests that it’s very much present. It isn’t just dairy that can contribute to a bad complexion. Sugary foods are a major culprit too. An overview of studies in 2013 found that high GI foods – which include fizzy drinks, pastries, cakes, and chocolate – have a direct impact on the severity of acne. This is because they absorb into the bloodstream quickly causing a fluctuation of hormones, including insulin, thought to instigate oily secretions (called sebum) that lead to spots. 2) You Look younger. Eating a lot of sugar can have an aging effect, it turns out. A study by Leiden University found that those aged between 50 and 70 who had a high level of glucose in their blood consistently looked older than people whose blood sugar level was lower. For every 180 grams of glucose per liter in participants’ blood, their age guessed by others rose by five years. ‘Normally collagen bulks out the skin and gives it a younger plump look, ’ Doctor Ross Perry, a cosmetic doctor at the Cosmedics clinic in London explained to the Mail Online. ‘If you persistently eat a high-sugar diet, then as a result, the collagen and elastin will become more rigid, so it will become easier for wrinkles to form and the skin will lose that youthful plumpness. ’ 3) You’ll sleep better. Diet, sleep, and energy is all things that are interlinked. Once sugar is cut out of your diet, it’s no wonder that you’ll notice a change to your sleep pattern. This 2016 study that examined the impact of different food groups on sleep found sugar to be one of the ones impacting our quality of slumber. Saturated fat and sugar were found to lessen time spent in deep sleep mode. 4) Your heart will be happier. Three times happier, according to research by cardiovascular scientist James J. DiNicolantonio. Looking at the impact of sugar on the risk of cardiometabolic diseases, he found that sugar may as related to high blood pressure and hypertension, as sodium. The research suggests the link could even be greater. Those who consume 25% or more calories from added sugars have an almost three-fold increased risk of cardiovascular disease than those who don’t. 5) You might be in a better mood. That self-loathing after you eat a doughnut may have more of a scientific basis than you would have thought. Studies into the impact of sugar-rich foods on the moods of post-menopausal women found that it was a risk factor in the development of depression. It is caused by the sugar being easily absorbed into the blood that can make you feel irritable and moody later on. Meanwhile the higher consumption of lactose, fibre, nonjuice fruit, and vegetables was associated with lower odds of depression in the study. Source: http://metro.co.uk/ ......................... ====================================================== SUBSCRIBE TO MY CHANNEL PLEASE.... https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWDyU5Z3SKdlZ0tL8WLsvRw?sub_confirmation=1 ===================================================== How to Calculate Your Heart Disease Risk There are certain risk factors that affect your chances of developing heart disease. Some of these factors are beyond your control, such as getting older, being male, or having a family history of heart disease; however, other factors you may be able to control, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, your amount of physical activity, and whether or not you smoke. In order to calculate your risk of developing heart disease, you will need to look at several different parameters and calculate the correlating numbers. You will then add up your score to see how it reflects to your risk of developing heart disease. Part 1 : Calculating Risk Factors 1.Visit your doctor for a physical and lab work. In order to calculate your risk of developing heart disease, you will have to test certain aspects of your health. Your doctor should be able to do this during a normal appointment. She will also draw a sample of your blood and test the levels of certain substances. 2.Consider your age. Heart disease is relatively uncommon in people younger than 30 years old but the risk increases with age for both men and women. Women run a slightly lower risk of heart disease than men of the same age group. 3.Add in your LDL levels. LDL cholesterol are lipids that are bad for your heart and blood vessels. They are deposited on the walls of your coronary arteries (blood vessels in the heart) and cause plaque to form. This plaque impedes blood flow and can lead to heart disease. 4.Factor in HDL cholesterol. HDL cholesterol is known as good cholesterol because it helps to lower your risk of cardiovascular diseases. It is considered “good” because it transports bad lipids back to the liver, where they are flushed from the body. 5.Consider your blood pressure as it relates to heart disease. High blood pressure is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease. 6.Account for possible diabetes. Diabetes is strongly related to heart disease. In fact, diabetics are twice as likely as non-diabetics to develop heart disease at some point in their lifetime. Part 2 : Subtracting for Protective Factors 1.Exercise regularly. Some behaviors like exercise can give you moderate protection against heart disease. Being physically active can lower your blood pressure, help to lower your cholesterol levels, and reduce your chance of having a heart attack or stroke. 2.Stop smoking. Smoking is not only terrible for your lungs but also increases your chances of getting heart disease. 3.Factor in diet. Diet is another mildly protective factor against heart disease. Put simply, the foods that you eat can control blood pressure, diabetes, weight gain, and high cholesterol. Part 3 : Assessing the Results 1.Add up your points. You have now scored all of the parameters for risk and prevention. Add up your points from the previous sections and see your final score. 2.Calculate your risk of heart disease if you are male. Take your point total and then find the corresponding percentage. This percentage represents the risk that you have of developing heart disease or of experiencing a cardiac event in the next 10 years. The points-risk relationship is different for males and females. 3.Calculate your risk if you are female. If you are a female, a total point score of less than -2 points represents a 1% risk of heart disease in the next 10 years. 4.Make changes to lower your risk. If you have a 20% or higher chance of having a heart condition in the next 10 years, you should seriously consider making some lifestyle changes. How to Calculate Your Heart Disease Risk. Halving Global Cardiovascular Disease Mortality

03:20:08
Cardiovascular disease (CVD), which includes heart attack, stroke and heart failure, is the leading cause of death in the world today, with an estimated 17.5 million deaths per year. On September 15, 2016, we hosted the Halving Global Cardiovascular Disease Mortality Rates symposium. The symposium highlighted the growing global burden of CVD and the powerful evidence generated from population-level surveys and studies in China, Cuba, India, Mexico, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States. The sessions explored tobacco use, obesity, diabetes, and hypertension, main risk factors that have a direct impact on CVD morbidity and mortality. Sir Richard Peto, Professor of Medical Statistics and Epidemiology at the University of Oxford, provided the keynote address on primary and secondary prevention. The CDC Foundation presented its Hero Award to Sir Richard in recognition of his efforts to save countless lives worldwide by uncovering the root causes of CVD and cancer and bringing data to bear on public policies. HOW to Reduce HEART Attack Risk? 6 BEST Ways To PREVENT Heart Attack! REDUCE RISK of GETTING STROKE

12:09
How to Reduce RISK of GETTING Heart Attack/STROKE? Tips to Lower Risk of a Heart Attack or Stroke! Sometimes, small changes to your lifestyle can really cut your odds of having a heart attack or stroke. Try this step-by-step approach. 1. Exercise a Little Each Day Moderate physical activity lowers your chances of a heart attack. Shoot for 30 minutes of exercise that gets your heart pumping at least 5 days a week. Brisk walking or swimming are some good choices. On the other 2 days, do strength training, like lifting weights. If you've got a tight schedule, break your exercise routine into small chunks. Try a 15-minute walk in the morning and another before lunch. 2. Set a Reasonable Goal for Weight Loss If you're overweight or obese, you don't have to get thin to reduce your risk for a heart attack or stroke. If you lose 5% to 10% of your weight, you'll improve your cholesterol numbers and lower your blood pressure and blood sugar levels. 3. Take Your Heart Medicine It sounds like a no-brainer, but don't skip your meds. Many people don't take their medications the way their doctor told them to. Figure out what keeps you from taking your medicine -- it could be side effects, cost, or forgetfulness -- and ask your doctor for help. 4. Eat Well If you stick to a healthy diet, you could lower your odds of getting heart disease. Fill your plate with different kinds of: Fruits Veggies Whole grains Fish Lean meats Stay away from processed or prepared foods that often are high in salt and added sugar. They’re also filled with preservatives. 5. Drink Some Alcohol, but Not Too Much If you drink, any type of alcohol helps your heart, but use caution. Too much raises your risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, and stroke. To get the benefit without the risk, stop at one drink a day if you're a woman and two if you're a man. 6. Eat a Little Chocolate Go for dark chocolate, and make sure the ingredients are at least 70% cacao. It's filled with nutrients that help protect your ticker. Keep your portions small so you don't gain weight and work your heart harder. 7. Don't Smoke Smoking dramatically raises your risk of heart attacks and strokes. Talk to your doctor about how to quit. You'll also be doing your friends and family a favor, since secondhand smoke can also lead to heart disease. 8. Pay Attention to Your Symptoms Don't just hope they'll go away. See your doctor if you feel anything unusual, like shortness of breath, changes in your heart rhythm, or extreme tiredness. Also, watch for pain in your jaw or back, nausea or vomiting, sweating, or flu-like symptoms. Heart Disease: Getting Serious About Prevention Here’s one more way men and women are equal: neither sex should have heart disease. New data: Last year, Finnish investigators showed that 4 of 5 heart attacks in men could be avoided. All the men had to do were five things: be modestly active, eat a good diet, not smoke, drink alcohol moderately and maintain a normal body weight. The findings of this robust study made an impression on the cardiology community. But it was a study of just men. This year, a group of American researchers reported similar results in women. In the Nurses’ Health Study, women had to do six things to avoid heart disease: not smoke, keep a normal body weight, exercise 2.5 hours per week, eat a good diet, drink less than 1 alcoholic drink per day and watch less than 7 hours of TV each week. In this 20-year study, the 23-44 year-old nurses who made those basic choices were 73% less likely to get heart disease. These were nearly the same odds as the Finnish men. There was a bonus in the Nurses Health Study. The same six lifestyle factors prevented 93% of diabetes and 57% of high blood pressure in women. Inactivity: A note on watching too much TV: three studies published this month showed inactivity—sitting for long periods–was linked to higher rates of heart disease and even death. Although regular exercise lowered the risk, it did not eliminate it. (Athletes with desk jobs pay attention to that.) Although the research on “sitting disease” is still early, not sitting in one place for hours at a time may be an important way to live longer and better. Changing the language: Perhaps the most important thing about this new research is its effect on the language of heart disease prevention. Rather than treating diseases like high blood pressure and high cholesterol, doctors are looking at the basic and fundamental things that keep us from getting heart disease. Moving our bodies, making wise food and drink choices, not smoking and getting away from white screens will deliver far more health than any pill or capsule. I know what you may be thinking: This is not new. That’s partly true. But what’s different is that these studies are changing the way doctors think. They may now emphasize lifestyle changes before drugs. More doctors are writing prescriptions for exercise.

5 Tips to Prevent Heart Disease And Stroke

03:19
5 Tips to Prevent Heart Disease And Stroke. 1. Take responsibility for your health. Cardiovascular disease is the major cause of death in America, accounting for 34 percent of deaths, many suddenly and almost all of them premature. This is down from 40 percent just four decades ago, mainly due to treatment of common risk factors. If you have diabetes, your risk increases dramatically. The best prevention against heart disease and stroke is to understand the risks and treatment options. The greatest risk is ignorance or misinformation. The first step is to take responsibility for your health. 2. Know your risks. The most influential risk factor for cardiovascular disease is age – the older you are, the greater your risk. The second is your genetic make-up. Although everyone is excited by the scientific progress in genomics research, conclusive gene tests are still in their infancy. But, as I tell our medical students, “A good family history is a poor man’s gene test.” We have long known that if your parents, grandparents, or other relatives were afflicted with or died of heart disease, diabetes or stroke, your risk is much greater. 3. Don’t smoke or expose yourself to second-hand smoke. The evidence is overwhelming that cigarette smoking and second-hand exposure to smoke increases the risks of heart disease, lung disease, peripheral vascular disease and stroke. 4 . Limit your calories. Fad diets do not work. If any of them did, we all would be on THAT one, wouldn’t we? The obesity rate in Americans is alarming, contributing to a near epidemic of diabetes, which is a cardiovascular disease. If you have diabetes, your risk is the same as someone who already had a heart attack. Obesity is caused by consuming more calories than your body burns. Abdominal obesity is the major risk. Portion sizes and the amount of sugars in the American diet have dramatically increased over the past few decades. At the same time, the daily amount of exercise has been decreasing. It is good advice to “drink slim” (water, tea, coffee). 5. Make exercise a daily habit. The lack of exercise is contributing to the obesity epidemic in Americans. Studies indicate that walking two miles a day is optimal for overall health, and those two miles of walking do not have to be done all at once. Exercise does more than burn calories; it also activates genes that are beneficial to health in other ways. Plus, exercise is one of the best treatments for depression and anxiety. However, exercise alone cannot control or reduce your weight – you must also modify your diet.

What Causes a Fatty Liver: 4 Ways to Fix

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a term used for a wide range of liver conditions that can affect people who drink very little to no alcohol. Fatty liver can also occur from excess alcohol consumption, but here we will concentrate on NAFLD. NAFLD occurs when an excess buildup of fat in the liver occurs, known as steatosis. Once fat exceeds 5-10% of the liver’s weight, the liver is considered to be a fatty liver. This occurs when the rate of de novo fatty acid synthesis and hepatic fatty acid uptake from plasma is greater than the rate of fatty acid oxidation and export - ie, too much fat is being created and not enough is being metabolized. Liver inflammation is characteristic is nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, one of the more advanced forms of the disease, that can eventually lead to scarring. This damage to the liver is similar to that caused by heavy alcohol use and can progress to liver cancer and cirrhosis (3). Causes: The exact cause isn’t known, however NAFLD is most common among those in their 40s and 50s who have metabolic syndrome, a cluster of risk factors that raise your chances of a wide range of diseases, including cardiovascular disease and type-2 diabetes. (1) Metabolic syndrome includes the following risk factors (2): Midsection fat accumulation High triglyceride level Low HDL cholesterol level High blood pressure High fasting blood sugar levels The majority of these risk factors are tied to obesity, so helping to lose weight and maintain a healthy weight is crucial. What Can You do to Combat Fatty Liver Disease? Currently there are no definitive treatments for fatty liver disease, so treatment is focused on lifestyle changes (3). 1. Cut out drinking 2. Cut out the fruit! Fructose is absorbed via portal vein and delivered to the liver in much higher concentrations as compared to other tissues. Fructose increases protein levels of all DNL enzymes during its conversion into triglycerides. Additionally, fructose supports lipogenesis in the setting of insulin resistance as fructose does not require insulin for its metabolism, and it directly stimulates SREBP1c, a major transcriptional regulator of DNL De-Novo lipogenesis 3. Boost Glutathione Levels- Glutathione is needed in order to recover from a fatty liver. Eat things like eggs, cabbage, broccoli and garlic as they have a higher sulfur content which can help convert into Acetyl Cysteine and create more glutathione in the body. 4. Turmeric- Turmeric is a spice whose use as medicine date back thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine. Curcuminoids are the compounds in turmeric that give the distinct yellow color and are largely credited with the impressive therapeutic benefits of turmeric. Turmeric is both a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant spice, and it is likely these aspects of turmeric that make it especially helpful for those with NAFLD. Study (7) A randomized double-blind placebo controlled trial took patients suffering from NAFLD and broke them into two groups. One group took 70-mg curcumin once daily for 8 weeks while the other group did the same with a placebo. Multiple measures were taken at baseline and then following the 8 weeks of treatment. It was found that those in the curcumin group experienced a significant reduction in liver fat content when compared to the placebo group - on average the curcumin participants experienced a 78.9% improvement in liver fat content! Additional significant reductions occurred in body mass index, serum total cholesterol levels, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood glucose when compared to the placebo group. References: 1. HOW TO KEEP YOUR HEART HEALTHY

05:01
You know that exercise and a good diet can keep your heart healthy. But what else can you do to keep your ticker going strong? Here are five key things you need to do every day to help your heart work most efficiently. Incorporate these habits into your lifestyle and your heart health will be the best it can be for you. 1. Eat healthy fats, NOT trans fats We need fats in our diet, including saturated and polyunsaturated and unsaturated fats. One fat we don’t need is trans fat, which is known to increase your risk of developing heart disease or having a stroke over a lifetime. This is because trans fat clogs your arteries by raising your bad cholesterol levels (LDL) and lowering your good cholesterol levels (HDL). By cutting them from your diet, you improve the blood flow throughout your body. So, what are trans fats? They are industry-produced fats often used in packaged baked goods, snack foods, margarines and fried fast foods to add flavor and texture. Tip: Read the labels on all foods. Trans fat appears on the ingredients list as partially hydrogenated oils. Look for 0 percent trans fat. Make it a point to avoid eating foods with trans fat. RELATED: Trans Fats, Not Saturated Fats, Link to Health Risks 2. Practice good dental hygiene, especially flossing your teeth daily Dental health is a good indication of overall health, including your heart, because those who have periodontal (gum) disease often have the same risk factors for heart disease. Studies continue on this issue, but many have shown that bacteria in the mouth involved in the development of gum disease can move into the bloodstream and cause an elevation in C-reactive protein, a marker for inflammation in the blood vessels. These changes may in turn, increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. Tip: Floss and brush your teeth daily to ward off gum disease. It’s more than cavities you may have to deal with if you are fighting gum disease. RELATED: Could You Be Ruining Your Teeth With These 5 Bad Habits? 3. Get enough sleep Sleep is an essential part of keeping your heart healthy. If you don’t sleep enough, you may be at a higher risk for cardiovascular disease no matter your age or other health habits. One study looking at 3,000 adults over the age of 45 found that those who slept fewer than six hours per night were about twice as likely to have a stroke or heart attack as people who slept six to eight hours per night. Researchers believe sleeping too little causes disruptions in underlying health conditions and biological processes, including blood pressure and inflammation. Tip: Make sleep a priority. Get 7 to 8 hours of sleep most nights. If you have sleep apnea, you should be treated as this condition is linked to heart disease and arrhythmias. RELATED: Do You Snore? How Sleep Apnea Can Hurt Your Heart 4. Don’t sit for too long at one time In recent years, research has suggested that staying seated for long periods of time is bad for your health no matter how much exercise you do. This is bad news for the many people who sit at sedentary jobs all day. When looking at the combined results of several observational studies that included nearly 800,000 people, researchers found that in those who sat the most, there was an associated 147 percent increase in cardiovascular events and a 90 percent increase in death caused by these events. In addition, sitting for long periods of time (especially when traveling) increases your risk of deep vein thrombosis (a blood clot). Tip: Exerts say it’s important to move throughout the day. Park farther away from the office, take a few shorter walks throughout the day and/or use a standing work station so you can move up and down. And remember to exercise on most days. RELATED: Can Sitting Too Much Cause Your Heart Attack? 5. Avoid secondhand smoke like the plague Studies show that the risk of developing heart disease is about 25 to 30 percent higher for people who are exposed to secondhand smoke at home or work. According to the American Heart Association, exposure to tobacco smoke contributes to about 34,000 premature heart disease deaths and 7,300 lung cancer deaths each year. And nonsmokers who have high blood pressure or high blood cholesterol have an even greater risk of developing heart disease when they’re exposed to secondhand smoke. This is because the chemicals emitted from cigarette smoke promote the development of plaque buildup in the arteries. PLEASE SUSCRIBE

Women and Heart Disease

03:21
Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States. American women are four to six times more likely to die of heart disease than breast cancer. Women develop heart problems typically seven or eight years later in life than men; however, by age 65 the risk is equal. The most common cause of heart disease is narrowing of the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart. This is called coronary artery disease and happens slowly over time, and it's the major reason people have heart attacks.

Cortisol: The Death Hormone (How To Lower Cortisol Levels Naturally)

06:50
Want to learn how to lower cortisol levels naturally? Cortigon is one of the most powerful supplements to lower cortisol - https://www.truthnutra.com/cortigon-yt What is Cortisol? Cortisol is a glucocorticoid hormone (one of the stress hormones) that is essential for human life. However, in the presence of chronic stress, cortisol levels surge to unhealthy high levels, causing a major problem and a real tangible threat to your health and longevity. Most disturbingly, recent studies have shown that chronically elevated cortisol levels are strongly associated with increased risks of dying. For example, one study showed that men with high cortisol levels were 63%, and women 82%, more likely to die than those with lower levels. Schoorlemmer RM, Peeters GM, van Schoor NM, et al. Relationships between cortisol level, mortality and chronic diseases in older persons. Clin Endocrinol (Oxf). 2009;71(6):779-86. The risks of dying specifically from cardiovascular disease are even more pronounced in those with high cortisol: one study found a five-fold increased risk of death, both among those with known cardiovascular disease and with people previously free of risk factors at baseline. Vogelzangs N, Beekman AT, Milaneschi Y, et al. Urinary cortisol and six-year risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 2010;95(11):4959-64. High cortisol levels create havoc through the body’s systems and are associated with a long list of age-accelerating diseases including obesity, hypertension, type II diabetes, and cardiovascular risk, as well as increased risk of infection, osteoporosis, depression, and even neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. Vegans vs. Meat Eaters: What’s The PERFECT DIET For A Longer Life? (2018)

10:42
Have you ever wondered who lives longer: vegans or meat-eaters? Get ready because we’re about to answer the eternal question of what’s the ideal diet for a longer life. 9. Body Mass Index The body mass index or BMI is a value defined as the body mass divided by the square of the body height which used to categorize people as either underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. According to the World Health Organization, the normal BMI range is between 18.5 and 25. A BMI of less than 18.5 is classified as underweight and may indicate malnutrition, an eating disorder, or other health problems, while a BMI equal to or greater than 25 is considered overweight and above 30 is considered obese. Over the past few decades, the average body mass index has been rapidly increasing in developed countries, which explains the rising rates of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. So what are the BMI differences between vegans and meat-eater and what can they tell us about which diet is healthier? One research study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetic collected dietary data from five groups: meat-eaters, occasional meat-eaters or semi-vegetarians, vegetarians who eat fish, vegetarians who consume dairy, and vegans. Data was collected from 71,751 men and women, with an average age of 59. The caloric intake was similar among all dietary patterns — about 2,000 calories a day. Researchers found that average BMI was lowest among vegans, while average BMI was highest among the meat-eaters. When looking specifically at obesity, researchers found that vegans had the lowest percentage of people who were obese — just 9.4 percent — while meat-eaters had the highest percentage of people who were obese — 33.3 percent. While diet isn’t the only factor in weight, it’s clear that a vegan diet is associated with a lower BMI. But BMI is not the be all and end all statistic for health or longevity, so let’s now look at the nutritional differences between vegans and meat-eaters. 8. Nutritional Deficiencies in Vegans People who eat a strictly plant-based diet have a higher risk of developing nutritional deficiencies caused by lack of animal protein in their diet than meat-eaters. The more restrictive the diet, the higher the risk of nutritional deficiencies, especially when it comes to eight essential nutrients that you can’t get from plant foods. These include: vitamin B12, vitamin D3, creatine, carnosine, heme-iron, taurine, and sulfur. These nutritional deficiencies can lead to a number of health problems, including anemia, lower bone density, impaired thyroid function, acne, fatigue, and even depression. In fact, one study from the Bristol University found that vegans and vegetarians are almost twice as likely to suffer from depression as those who consume a conventional balanced diet. Vegans and vegetarians don’t consume enough vitamin B12 and omega-6 fatty acids, which has have been linked with an increased risk of mental health problems. Another potential contributing factor is that lower intake of seafood is thought to be associated with greater risk of depressive symptoms. But before we go into nutritional deficiencies of vegans in depth, take a second to subscribe to our channel so you don’t miss any of our upcoming content! 7. Vitamins B12 and D3 In terms of health risks from eating a vegan diet, most people first think of vitamin B12 deficiency, as vitamin B12 is present in natural form only in animal sources of food, such as meat, fish, dairy products, and eggs. Vitamin B12 is known as the energy vitamin, and your body needs it for a number of vital functions, including energy production, blood formation, DNA synthesis, and reproductive health. One way vegans can prevent Vitamin B12 deficiency is by either taking supplements or consuming seaweed and fermented soy which contain small amounts of bioactive B12. However, the effectiveness of eating seaweed or taking an oral B12 supplement has been questioned by scientists. Vitamin D is a hormone involved in the biochemical cellular machinery of all cells and tissues in your body and you can get it primarily from sun exposure and certain foods. Main food sources ..

Prevent a heart attack: NINE lifestyle changes to make now to stop an attack

04:27
Heart disease is the UK’s number one killer. Over 160,000 people die from heart and circulatory disease in the UK each year, and every seven minutes someone will have a heart attack. To give yourself the best chance to avoid becoming a statistic, there are nine important lifestyle changes to make now, according to the Heart Association.Quit smokingThe most important thing is to stop smoking. According to the British Heart Foundation, smokers are almost twice as likely to have a heart attack compared to someone who has never smoked.Smoking damages the lining of arteries, which can go on to cause angina, stroke or cardiovascular disease.Choose good nutritionChoosing a healthy diet is also crucial. What you eat affects your cholesterol, blood pressure, weight and likelihood of getting diabetes, all of which can heighten a person’s risk of heart problems.Even if you have an existing heart condition, good nutrition can help, says the British Heart Foundation.Reduce high blood cholesterolHigh cholesterol is a big danger, as fat lodged in arteries could trigger a heart attack or stroke. To get it down to a safe level, reduce your intake of saturated fats and cholesterol-laden foods such as fatty meats and cakes.Lower high blood pressureUp to seven million people in the UK are living with undiagnosed high blood pressure, according to the British Heart Foundation, making heart attacks more likely.Blood pressure can be reduced by lowering the amount of salt in your diet, and by making the effort to exercise everyday.Be physically activeDon’t be discouraged by recommendations that a person needs to exercise vigorously at least four times a week to see any benefit.Any activity is better than nothing, so get moving, even if it’s just a walk to the shop. Ten minutes a day can offer health benefits and help protect you against heart problems. 6 heart attack symptoms in women Tue, August 30, 2016 Women don't always suffer the same heart attack symptoms as men, here are six early warning signs to look out for. High levels of glucose in your blood can damage the artery walls, making them more likely to develop fatty deposits, warns the British Heart Foundation.Managing the disease by controlling diet and doing physical activity will lessen the chance of developing heart disease.GETTYReduce stressStress may negatively affect a person’s blood pressure, putting them at a higher risk of a heart attack. It doesn’t help that people who are stressed often reach for alcohol or cigarettes to calm themselves down, or make unhealthy food and lifestyle choices.L

6 things you need to stop doing before you're 40 for your heart

07:47
It's possible to get to 40 and not experience any heart problems, even if you have some less than ideal habits. However, around that age, your body does not work as well as when you were 20, and if you haven't been taking care of your body, you will begin to feel it.'A number of risk factors for heart disease really start to go up in [a person's] 40s,' says Deepak Bhatt: the executive director of interventional cardiovascular programs at Brigham and Women's Hospital Heart & Vascular Centre, and a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.'The risk for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes all start to go up substantially,' he said.In an interview with NetDocter, Bhatt describes the six major risky choices you can make for your heart on the way to 40, and some suggestions on how you can improve.Smoking is a major cause of heart disease.Because quitting is hard, persistence is key, says Richard Stein, a cardiologist, and professor of medicine at New York University's Langone Health.Apparently, those who've managed to quit successfully did so after between seven and 10 initial failed attempts.Stein advises talking to a GP and developing a strategy for yourself for the best results, while being aware that failure is a normal part of the quitting process.Perhaps unsurprisingly, a poor diet and expanding waistline can contribute to heart disease.Furthermore, once you reach the age of 40, bad dietary habits really start to show as your metabolism slows down.'Your metabolism is slowing, so if you're doing what you've always done, you may start gaining weight,' Dr.Bhatt says.Better eating habits will help. However, Bhatt recommends weighing yourself every day to keep an eye on your weight.Small fluctuations are natural, he says, but trends upward could be concerning and may mean reevaluating what you're eating.Ideally, you will stay within a margin of 15 pounds (or around 7kg) about the goal weight established during conversations with your GP.Controlling portion size and not being greedy is key to a healthy heart.Generally speaking, lowering your calorie intake is a good idea.More specifically, you can envision your foodin ball shapes to helpfully control your portion sizes. For instance, a fist of protein (85g), a tennis ball of grains (65g) and a baseball ball of greens (130g) per meal is normal. In terms of fats, you should stick to just a single teaspoon of butter per portion, one of olive oil or two of nut butter.Importantly, you should only eat when hungry. After a each meal, if you are still hungry, wait a little while.Eat a little more if your hunger persists, but only low calorie options like fruit and vegetables. Not going to the gym - or going too much Dr.Stein says that regular exercise is one of the best things you can do for your heart throughout your life.He advises exercising 30 to 45 minutes per day, three to four times a week. However, workouts that are too intensive can do damage just like having too little exercise.

Brains Go South on Southern Food

01:52
NEWS RELEASE: Eating Southern-style foods triggers a higher risk of stroke, a leading cause of vascular dementia. Find out which foods matter. See what you can do to lower your risk. --------------------------------------------------- ARTICLE ------------------------------------------------ In the first large-scale study on the relationship between Southern foods and stroke, researchers characterized a Southern diet by a high intake of foods such as: Fried chicken, Fried fish, Fried potatoes, Bacon, Ham, Liver and gizzards, Sugary drinks such as sweet tea. In addition to being high in fat, fried foods tend to be heavily salted. "We've got three major factors working together in the Southern-style diet to raise risks of cardiovascular disease: fatty foods are high in cholesterol, sugary drinks are linked to diabetes and salty foods lead to high blood pressure," said Suzanne Judd, Ph.D., M.P.H., lead researcher and a nutritional epidemiologist at the University of Alabama Birmingham's biostatistics department. Previous research has shown that Southerners are about 20 percent more likely to have a stroke, which often leads to vascular dementia, than the rest of Americans. Comparing the dietary habits of more than 20,000 black and white adults, researchers found: Stroke frequency was directly proportional to how much Southern food participants ate. People who ate Southern foods about six times a week had a 41 percent higher stroke risk compared to those who ate it about once a month. Eating a Southern diet accounted for 63 percent of the higher risk of stroke among African-Americans above that of their white counterparts. Those whose diets were highest in fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains (eaten about five times a week) had a 29 percent lower stroke risk than those whose diets were the lowest in these foods (eaten about three times a week). The study raises red flags for African-Americans who are five times more likely to eat Southern foods than whites, Judd said. And first-time stroke risk among blacks is almost double that of whites, according to American Stroke Association statistics. Participants from 48 states answered telephone questionnaires about what foods they eat as part of the ongoing Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) Study (begun in 2003). Participants were evenly divided between men and women, and the minimum age was 45. Each person underwent an in-person medical assessment including height, weight and blood pressure measurements; an electrocardiogram; and a blood test. Every six months after, participants answered follow-up telephone questions about their stroke incidence, sleep habits and overall health. Researchers designed a mathematical model to group foods commonly eaten together into 56 different categories. Each person's eating habits were scored based on the categories. The scores were further analyzed in relation to how often they had a stroke. About two-thirds of the participants who ate the most Southern-style foods lived in the southeastern United States. But, no matter where they live, people eating a lot of Southern foods should be more aware of their risks of stroke, Judd said. Healthcare providers should educate patients about nutrition earlier, and ask patients about what they're eating, how much and how often, she said. Urban Indian Female at high risk of Heart disease

02:59
Urban Indian female in the age group of 30 to 45 years have emerged as an ‘at risk population’ for cardiovascular diseases. 95% of them are overweight or obese. Cardiovascular diseases in women are slowly gaining epidemic. Heart ailments have replaced communicable diseases in rural & urban India. Indian urban women are more at risk of heart disease today than they were three years ago. The reasons for the high Cardiovascular diseases in women include, an unhealthy lifestyle, increased intake of food like high trans fat, cheese, sugar and salt, inadequate physical exercise and increased stress levels, dependence on alcohol and cigarettes. Late dinners are leading to increased abdominal obesity and increased waist-to-hip ratio, a major risk factor for heart diseases. The largest groups of women at risk of Cardiovascular diseases are aged between 35 and 44. Low HDL and high BMI are the two most common contributors to Cardiovascular diseases risk setting in as early as 35 years for women. Cardiovascular diseases risk is as high amongst housewives as it is amongst working professionals. The symptoms women face are also different than those faced by men.Women are less likely than men to have typical angina. They have a higher false positive rate in the treadmill test.Heart disease in women generally presents 10 years later than men but with greater risk than men. A variety of other cardiac abnormalities accounted for a few additional cases. Currently, at least 80 per cent of premature deaths from Cardiovascular diseases can be avoided. if four main risk factors: tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and harmful use of alcohol are controlled. Eating a healthy diet and doing regular exercise can help lower the level of Cardiovascular diseases risk. Valter Longo, Ph.D. on Fasting-Mimicking Diet & Fasting for Longevity, Cancer & Multiple Sclerosis

01:18:16
Dr. Rhonda Patrick speaks with Dr. Valter Longo, a professor of gerontology and biological sciences and director of the longevity institute at the University of Southern California. Dr. Longo has made huge contributions to the field of aging, including the role of fasting and diet in longevity and healthspan in humans as well as metabolic fasting therapies for the treatment of human diseases. ▶︎ Get the show notes! https://www.foundmyfitness.com/episodes/valter-longo In this conversation, Rhonda and Valter discuss... • The effects of prolonged fasting, which refers to 2-3 day fasting intervals in mice and 4-5 days in humans. • Dr. Longo’s work on the fasting-mimicking diet, which is 5 day restricted diet that is meant to simulate some of the biological effects of prolonged fasting while still allowing some food. • How clinical trials have demonstrated efficacy for this diet for type 2 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and cancer patients. • Fasting as an inducer of differential stress resistance, where it can simultaneously make cancer cells more sensitive to death while also making healthy cells more resistant to these same death stimuli (such as chemotherapy) which might otherwise induce cell death amongst healthy cells as collateral damage. • Fasting as a biological state which humans historically experienced with extreme regularity and we may ultimately need in order to mitigate various disease states. • The effects of prolonged fasting on the immune system, namely, how it clears away damaged white blood cells via autophagy and how this causes hematopoietic stem cells to self renew and make more stem cells and also produce new blood cells to fully replenish the white blood cell population. • How prolonged fasting causes a shift in the immune cell population towards one that is more representative of youth by normalizing the ratio of myeloid cells to lymphoid cells. • The positive effects of prolonged fasting and the fasting-mimicking diet on markers of systemic inflammation, blood glucose levels and other aging biomarkers. • The conclusions of Dr. Longo & Dr. Marcus Bock’s research comparing 1 week of the fasting-mimicking diet followed by 6 months of mediterranean diet to six months of a ketogenic diet in people with multiple sclerosis. • The strange, somewhat paradoxical role of autophagy genes in cancer progression and some of the open questions surrounding the exact role that these genes are playing. • Dr. Longo’s high level thoughts on metformin as an anti-aging drug. • How the growth hormone/IGF-1 axis is one of the most important genetic pathways in aging from yeast to worms to mice to humans. ▶︎ Follow Dr. Longo on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/profvalterlongo ▶︎ Visit ProLon FMD: http://www.prolonfmd.com/ ▶︎ Visit L-Nutra: http://www.l-nutra.com/ ▶︎ Follow Dr. Longo on Amazon for his new book (coming soon): https://www.amazon.com/Valter-Longo/e/B00K17Z408/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_1?qid=1474851961&sr=8-1 Links related to FoundMyFitness: ▶︎ Subscribe on YouTube: http://youtube.com/user/FoundMyFitness?sub_confirmation=1 ▶︎ Join my weekly email newsletter: http://www.foundmyfitness.com/?sendme=lifestyle-heuristic ▶︎ Crowdfund more videos: http://www.patreon.com/foundmyfitness ▶︎ Subscribe to the podcast: http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/foundmyfitness/id818198322 ▶︎ Twitter: http://twitter.com/foundmyfitness ▶︎ Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/foundmyfitness ▶︎ Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/foundmyfitness
