The first step is to take responsibility for your health. 2. Know your risks. The most influential risk factor for cardiovascular disease is age – the older you are, the greater your risk. The second is your genetic make-up. Although everyone is excited by the scientific progress in genomics research, conclusive gene tests are still in their infancy. But, as I tell our medical students, “A good family history is a poor man’s gene test.” We have long known that if your parents, grandparents, or other relatives were afflicted with or died of heart disease, diabetes or stroke, your risk is much greater. 3. Don’t smoke or expose yourself to second-hand smoke. The evidence is overwhelming that cigarette smoking and second-hand exposure to smoke increases the risks of heart disease, lung disease, peripheral vascular disease and stroke. 4 . Limit your calories. Fad diets do not work. If any of them did, we all would be on THAT one, wouldn’t we? The obesity rate in Americans is alarming, contributing to a near epidemic of diabetes, which is a cardiovascular disease. If you have diabetes, your risk is the same as someone who already had a heart attack. Obesity is caused by consuming more calories than your body burns. Abdominal obesity is the major risk. Portion sizes and the amount of sugars in the American diet have dramatically increased over the past few decades. At the same time, the daily amount of exercise has been decreasing. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a term used for a wide range of liver conditions that can affect people who drink very little to no alcohol. Fatty liver can also occur from excess alcohol consumption, but here we will concentrate on NAFLD. NAFLD occurs when an excess buildup of fat in the liver occurs, known as steatosis. Once fat exceeds 5-10% of the liver’s weight, the liver is considered to be a fatty liver. This occurs when the rate of de novo fatty acid synthesis and hepatic fatty acid uptake from plasma is greater than the rate of fatty acid oxidation and export - ie, too much fat is being created and not enough is being metabolized. Liver inflammation is characteristic is nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, one of the more advanced forms of the disease, that can eventually lead to scarring. This damage to the liver is similar to that caused by heavy alcohol use and can progress to liver cancer and cirrhosis (3). Causes: The exact cause isn’t known, however NAFLD is most common among those in their 40s and 50s who have metabolic syndrome, a cluster of risk factors that raise your chances of a wide range of diseases, including cardiovascular disease and type-2 diabetes. What Can You do to Combat Fatty Liver Disease? Currently there are no definitive treatments for fatty liver disease, so treatment is focused on lifestyle changes (3). 1. Cut out drinking 2. Cut out the fruit! Fructose is absorbed via portal vein and delivered to the liver in much higher concentrations as compared to other tissues. Fructose increases protein levels of all DNL enzymes during its conversion into triglycerides. Additionally, fructose supports lipogenesis in the setting of insulin resistance as fructose does not require insulin for its metabolism, and it directly stimulates SREBP1c, a major transcriptional regulator of DNL De-Novo lipogenesis 3. Turmeric is both a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant spice, and it is likely these aspects of turmeric that make it especially helpful for those with NAFLD. Study (7) A randomized double-blind placebo controlled trial took patients suffering from NAFLD and broke them into two groups. One group took 70-mg curcumin once daily for 8 weeks while the other group did the same with a placebo. Multiple measures were taken at baseline and then following the 8 weeks of treatment. It was found that those in the curcumin group experienced a significant reduction in liver fat content when compared to the placebo group - on average the curcumin participants experienced a 78.9% improvement in liver fat content! Here are five key things you need to do every day to help your heart work most efficiently. Incorporate these habits into your lifestyle and your heart health will be the best it can be for you. 1. Eat healthy fats, NOT trans fats We need fats in our diet, including saturated and polyunsaturated and unsaturated fats. One fat we don’t need is trans fat, which is known to increase your risk of developing heart disease or having a stroke over a lifetime. This is because trans fat clogs your arteries by raising your bad cholesterol levels (LDL) and lowering your good cholesterol levels (HDL). By cutting them from your diet, you improve the blood flow throughout your body. So, what are trans fats? They are industry-produced fats often used in packaged baked goods, snack foods, margarines and fried fast foods to add flavor and texture. Tip: Read the labels on all foods. Trans fat appears on the ingredients list as partially hydrogenated oils. Look for 0 percent trans fat. Make it a point to avoid eating foods with trans fat. 6 things you need to stop doing before you're 40 for your heart
It's possible to get to 40 and not experience any heart problems, even if you have some less than ideal habits.However, around that age, your body does not work as well as when you were 20, and if you haven't been taking care of your body, you will begin to feel it.'A number of risk factors for heart disease really start to go up in [a person's] 40s,' says Deepak Bhatt: the executive director of interventional cardiovascular programs at Brigham and Women's Hospital Heart & Vascular Centre, and a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.'The risk for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes all start to go up substantially,' he said.In an interview with NetDocter, Bhatt describes the six major risky choices you can make for your heart on the way to 40, and some suggestions on how you can improve.Smoking is a major cause of heart disease.Because quitting is hard, persistence is key, says Richard Stein, a cardiologist, and professor of medicine at New York University's Langone Health.Apparently, those who've managed to quit successfully did so after between seven and 10 initial failed attempts.Stein advises talking to a GP and developing a strategy for yourself for the best results, while being aware that failure is a normal part of the quitting process.Perhaps unsurprisingly, a poor diet and expanding waistline can contribute to heart disease.Furthermore, once you reach the age of 40, bad dietary habits really start to show as your metabolism slows down.'Your metabolism is slowing, so if you're doing what you've always done, you may start gaining weight,' Dr.Bhatt says.Better eating habits will help.However, Bhatt recommends weighing yourself every day to keep an eye on your weight.Small fluctuations are natural, he says, but trends upward could be concerning and may mean reevaluating what you're eating.Ideally, you will stay within a margin of 15 pounds (or around 7kg) about the goal weight established during conversations with your GP.Controlling portion size and not being greedy is key to a healthy heart.Generally speaking, lowering your calorie intake is a good idea.More specifically, you can envision your foodin ball shapes to helpfully control your portion sizes.For instance, a fist of protein (85g), a tennis ball of grains (65g) and a baseball ball of greens (130g) per meal is normal.In terms of fats, you should stick to just a single teaspoon of butter per portion, one of olive oil or two of nut butter.Importantly, you should only eat when hungry.After a each meal, if you are still hungry, wait a little while.Eat a little more if your hunger persists, but only low calorie options like fruit and vegetables.Not going to the gym - or going too much Dr.Stein says that regular exercise is one of the best things you can do for your heart throughout your life.He advises exercising 30 to 45 minutes per day, three to four times a week.However, workouts that are too intensive can do damage just like having too little exercise.

See what you can do to lower your risk. --------------------------------------------------- ARTICLE ------------------------------------------------ In the first large-scale study on the relationship between Southern foods and stroke, researchers characterized a Southern diet by a high intake of foods such as: Fried chicken, Fried fish, Fried potatoes, Bacon, Ham, Liver and gizzards, Sugary drinks such as sweet tea. In addition to being high in fat, fried foods tend to be heavily salted. "We've got three major factors working together in the Southern-style diet to raise risks of cardiovascular disease: fatty foods are high in cholesterol, sugary drinks are linked to diabetes and salty foods lead to high blood pressure," said Suzanne Judd, Ph.D., M.P.H., lead researcher and a nutritional epidemiologist at the University of Alabama Birmingham's biostatistics department. Previous research has shown that Southerners are about 20 percent more likely to have a stroke, which often leads to vascular dementia, than the rest of Americans. Comparing the dietary habits of more than 20,000 black and white adults, researchers found: Stroke frequency was directly proportional to how much Southern food participants ate. People who ate Southern foods about six times a week had a 41 percent higher stroke risk compared to those who ate it about once a month. Eating a Southern diet accounted for 63 percent of the higher risk of stroke among African-Americans above that of their white counterparts. Those whose diets were highest in fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains (eaten about five times a week) had a 29 percent lower stroke risk than those whose diets were the lowest in these foods (eaten about three times a week). The study raises red flags for African-Americans who are five times more likely to eat Southern foods than whites, Judd said. And first-time stroke risk among blacks is almost double that of whites, according to American Stroke Association statistics. Participants from 48 states answered telephone questionnaires about what foods they eat as part of the ongoing Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) Study (begun in 2003). Participants were evenly divided between men and women, and the minimum age was 45. Each person underwent an in-person medical assessment including height, weight and blood pressure measurements; an electrocardiogram; and a blood test. Every six months after, participants answered follow-up telephone questions about their stroke incidence, sleep habits and overall health. Researchers designed a mathematical model to group foods commonly eaten together into 56 different categories. Each person's eating habits were scored based on the categories. The scores were further analyzed in relation to how often they had a stroke. About two-thirds of the participants who ate the most Southern-style foods lived in the southeastern United States. But, no matter where they live, people eating a lot of Southern foods should be more aware of their risks of stroke, Judd said. Healthcare providers should educate patients about nutrition earlier, and ask patients about what they're eating, how much and how often, she said.
