Hello and welcome to Health in Heels with Dr. Lisa! If you are sexually active and are not ready to become a parent, it is important to use birth control to protect yourself from pregnancy. For men, it’s simple: Use a condom or get a vasectomy), but for women, there are a multitude of birth control options. There are 3 main-types of birth control: Barrier Methods, Intrauterine Methods (or IUD), Hormonal Methods. Barrier methods are what we are most familiar with. These include products that block the sperm from getting to the cervix and usually include nonoxynol-9 spermicide. Show a diaphragm and how to use it. (Failure Rate 12%) Show a female condom and how to use it. (Failure Rate 21%) Discuss spermicides. Not useful in preventing STDs (Failure Rate 28%) Intrauterine Methods (IUD) is implanted by your gynecologist. Show an IUD and discuss benefits over barrier method. (Failure Rate 0.8%) Show a LNG IUD, and how it releases a small amount of progestin each day (0.2% Failure Rate) Hormone Methods - releases a combination of progestin and estrogen. Pros and Cons of hormones Multiple Delivery methods: patch, injections, implant, oral (aka “the pill”) How “emergency contraception” Plan B and regular contraception differ. How to Calculate Safe Period to Avoid Pregnancy: Free, Simple, and Effective Method
Learn how to calculate safe period to avoid pregnancy using a free, simple, natural and effective method. HOW TO CALCULATE SAFE PERIOD TO AVOID PREGNANCY: FREE, SIMPLE, AND EFFECTIVE METHOD! Calculating your safe period and using it in preventing unwanted pregnancy is free. It has no side effects; it is always available and quite effective if properly calculated and applied. But many people find this very confusing and difficult to calculate. And so, today, we will be looking at a simple method of calculating one's safe period and applying it in preventing pregnancy. 1) Okay, the first thing to note is that: you should start counting from the date you started bleeding (not the day you finished the bleeding). For example if you started bleeding on the 4th, you start counting from the 4th (not the day you finished but the day you started). The 4th will be day 1 then 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and so on the day you started bleeding will be your day 1. 2) The second thing to note is: when it comes to calculating your safe period you must avoid Day-14 and days around Day-14: These days are the "dangerous days". So if you started bleeding on the 4th, that would be your day 1 then 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14...then the 14th  day  -- and days around Day-14 should be avoided: these are the dangerous days because, these are the days the egg is likely to be released and the probability of getting pregnant is very high! 3) The third thing to note here is that: every other day apart from this danger period constitutes your safe period; so all these days aside Day-14 (and days around it) constitutes your safe period. As you get closer to Day-14, the likelihood of getting pregnant increases and away from Day-14, the likelihood decreases. So, the day you started bleeding is part of your safe period but as you get closer to Day-14, the likelihood of getting pregnant increases. Days around day 14...avoid, but other days are safe and down to your next period next month are safe. The danger period are the days to avoid sexual intercourse which are the days around 14th day. I will repeat it one more time: The first thing is start counting from the first day you started bleeding that would be Day 1. The next thing is avoid Day 14 and days around day 14. I hope that helps but before we leave, 2 very important points to note: 1) First this method is best for ladies with a fairly regular menstrual circle where the difference in months is just few days. You might see your period 17th this month and 18th or 19th next month or 15th or 16th next month. The difference is just few days plus or minus. We can say you have a fairly regular menstrual circle then you can apply this method of contraception. 2) The second point is this method is not advisable for ladies with very short menstrual circle say for ladies that see their menses every 3 weeks and it is also not advisable for ladies with very long menstrual circle say for ladies that see their period once in every 2 months. Here are 10 to explore and discuss with your doctor. The method: Male condom How to use it: Made of thin latex or plastic, condoms are worn on the penis during intercourse. Effectiveness: Pretty good if you use them correctly; only 2 women out of 100 will get pregnant if they always use condoms perfectly. Not so perfect? About 18 out of 100 women will get pregnant in a year with typical use. The good: They're simple to use, inexpensive, widely available, and protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The bad: The failure rate is high, and they can make sex feel less spontaneous. "Plus, some people can't stand the way they feel," says Espey. It's also worth noting that you or your partner could be allergic to latex. The method: Female condom How to use it: Not as popular as the male condom, the female condom is a plastic pouch that's inserted into the vagina right before intercourse. There are so many different types of contraception. There are oral contraceptives, like pills you can take, there is the vaginal ring, there are patches, there are condoms, a diaphragm, an IUD, periodic abstinence or the calendar method, watching when you're going to be ovulating and abstaining during those types of the month. There are pros and cons to all different forms. The one that's right for you may not be right for someone else. I suggest talking with your doctor and they can discuss different options with you and decide what would be best for your situation. There are many different things to consider. What is convenient? What would be easy for you to use, what are you comfortable using? What is safe for you? For example, there are certain medical conditions that make it so women can't take oral contraceptives or use certain types of birth control. What is affordable for you? Does your insurance cover different kinds but not others? How effective is it? That's definitely something to think about. For example, forms like withdrawal method, abstinence, the calendar or rhythm method aren't nearly as effective as, say an IUD. There is also the issue of how long you want to prevent pregnancy. Some types are more longterm, others you can get pregnant right after you stop using it or taking it. These are all issues your doctor can talk with you about and come up with a good plan for you.
