Diabetes During Pregnancy: What is Gestational Diabetes?

Gestational Diabetes is a temporary type of diabetes and is most common health problem for women.
What are the causes of gestational diabetes? - Dr. Kavitha Lakshmi Easwaran

01:44
Gestational diabetes is the result of various hormonal changes that occur in pregnant women. Placenta is the organ that transfers nutrients and oxygen from the mother to the baby. The production of certain hormones by the placenta namely human placental lactogen, progesterone and estrogen interferes with the ability of insulin to metabolize glucose and this is what is termed as insulin resistance.. nnAs pregnancy advances, the placenta grows larger in size and produces more and more of these hormones thereby increasing the insulin resistance. Hence, pregnancy is a diabetogenic state.. nnNormally, this is compensated by a three fold increase in production of insulin by the mothers pancreas. However, in women with a low insulin reserve, the mothers pancreas do not produce enough insulin to overcome the progress of insulin resistance. Hence, glucose is not metabolized properly and gestational diabetes sets in. The severity of gestational diabetes is inversely proportional to the insulin reserve of the mother. nHence the onset and severity varies from women to women..
Signs You Are Diabetic During Pregnancy

I want to know the signs you are diabetic during pregnancy. Bad results on the blood tests they do around the seventh month when you drink that nasty sugary drink are a sure sign. I’d like to know what to look for before that point. If you had gestational diabetes with the first kid, there’s a high risk of it the second go around. I know that you’re at risk for it if you have a family history of it, which I do. One of the signs of diabetes in any case is urine that smells sweet. It still smells bad to me. Then again, so does the meat aisle. Some of the signs of gestational diabetes are the same as standard diabetes, like increased thirst and urination. I’m already peeing for two, and dehydration is a common problem during pregnancy. Let’s just say, if you’re already drinking more water and it isn’t enough, you need to talk to a doctor. Increased thirst and drinking more may be a sign of a second trimester growth spurt and expanding blood vessels or being pregnant during the summer, so that isn’t enough for me to worry about it. Increased hunger can be a sign of prenatal diabetes. I’m eating for two. No, you’re at most eating for one point two, since the kid should not weigh more than ten pounds even at the end of the pregnancy. I do not know if ten pounds is healthy or unhealthy. You’re at risk for it if you had a baby over ten pounds, and having gestational diabetes increases the odds the baby you’re carrying will be a whopper. The difference between men’s fishing stories and women’s birth stories is that the women can guilt trip the kids with it while the guys only tell them between trips. If you have a spike in hunger and thirst while pregnant and it isn’t because you’ve been throwing up a lot, you should talk to the doctor about diabetes checks. What symptoms of diabetes during pregnancy should I look out for? Blurred vision. You can get that with preeclampsia and high blood pressure. That’s something you have to see the doctor about too, and in fact, preeclampsia is life threatening, so you have to get to a doctor if you have that symptom. So being hungrier, thirstier or bigger than normal when I’m already experiencing changes that make me hungry, tired, swollen and thirsty are symptoms. That’s why they do the blood tests. You’d think I’d be over the anxiety of blood tests, when I’m about to be peed on, pooped on and spit up on so much it will be cute.

Gestational Diabetes, Symptoms, Causes

Here you can read about Gestational Diabetes, Symptoms and Causes etc. Gestational diabetes develops during pregnancy (gestation). Like other types of diabetes, gestational diabetes affects how your cells use sugar (glucose). Gestational diabetes causes high blood sugar that can affect your pregnancy and your baby's health. Any pregnancy complication is concerning, but there's good news. Expectant moms can help control gestational diabetes by eating healthy foods, exercising and, if necessary, taking medication. Controlling blood sugar can prevent a difficult birth and keep you and your baby healthy. In gestational diabetes, blood sugar usually returns to normal soon after delivery. But if you've had gestational diabetes, you're at risk for type 2 diabetes. You'll continue working with your health care team to monitor and manage your blood sugar.

Simple steps to prevent Gestational Diabetes - Dr. Shashi Agrawal

03:07
Gestational Diabetes is one of the most common complications of pregnancy, it is defined as altered blood sugars which is developed during pregnancy and they usually correct itself after the delivery. Prevention of GDM is very important to avoid future maternal and fettle adverse outcomes. Generally the high risk patients are those who had GDM in previous pregnancies, elderly pregnant women, PCOS, obese and people with strong family history. Usually in a planned pregnancy, pre pregnancy control few steps can be taken to avoid GDM in future that usually maintaining an ideal BMI by regular exercise, diet and losing weight. During pregnancy usually the GDM develops in second or third trimester though it can also start from the beginning itself. The fine tuning of diet and exercise is required to avoid GDM. It can be ideally done by maintaining ideal weight during pregnancy that is no weight gain about 6 months of pregnancy or total weight gain till 9 months about 4-5 kg is enough. Also high risk patient should go for regular exercises after consulting the doctor, 30 minutes walk per day on most of the days of a week, antenatal exercises as advised by the doctor, they can go for a swim which is good exercise during the pregnancy. Apart from that the diet should be controlled from the very beginning, no extra sugar, white sugar should be completely avoided, rice, high fiber diet should be taken from the beginning as it absorbs extra sugar from the body, it should be low carbohydrate and low fat diet. With this tuning probably the Gestational Diabetes can be put at hold, also regular checkups, good follow up with doctor, sugars should be checked at the first visit at about 6 months and almost every month at high risk case.
What do I need to know about gestational diabetes?

03:06
All pregnant women should be screened for gestational diabetes around 28 weeks gestation. And it's important to test for this because if a woman has gestational diabetes or if she had previously diagnosed type 1 or type 2 diabetes, if uncontrolled, it can cause complications like preeclampsia, blood sugar problems for the baby after delivery, stillbirth, and an abnormally large baby, which has complications associated with that too. 5% to 18% of women develop gestational diabetes, and it all goes back to insulin resistance. Insulin is the key that unlocks your body's cells so that sugar can go inside and make the cells work. And your body naturally becomes a little more insulin-resistant during pregnancy so that there's enough sugar circulating in your blood so the baby gets what it needs. Normally, mothers can compensate for this by producing more insulin, but mothers who have gestational diabetes aren't able to make more insulin, and so blood sugar levels rise. So testing, like I said, for this is done are 28 weeks, and what will happen is the doctor will have you drink a very sugary drink. It contains 50 grams of glucose. And then they'll test your blood sugar an hour later and see how your body responded. If you get a value of 130 to 140, then you may have gestational diabetes, and the doctor will want to do a follow-up test. If the value you get on your first test is 200 or higher, then you just have gestational diabetes, but they may still want to do follow-up testing. And in both cases, it's doing a 3 hour glucose tolerance test. This is done when you're fasting, and then you drink double the amount of sugar. It's a 100 gram glucose sugar drink. And then they test your blood sugar every hour for 3 hours and see what it is. And then, based on those values, they determine if you truly have gestational diabetes or not. If the diagnosis is made, then there's a couple of different ways to manage it. And it's super important to keep your blood sugars under control so that you don't have the complications I discussed before. The management plan is going to be dependent on how severe your case is. And for a lot of women, it just involves some diet changes and exercise. For other women, it involves taking oral medication. And for about 15% of women with gestational diabetes, it has to be controlled with insulin. And you may start out just needing to make a few diet changes, and then as the pregnancy progresses, so do your body's needs, and so do your baby's needs, and so that may change the plan as well. So you could start out being diet-controlled, and then you may end up with oral medication or with insulin. So this speaks of the importance of consistent monitoring. A diabetic educator will meet with you and talk to you about your treatment plan and also tell you how often you should be monitoring your blood sugars. They'll take a peek at your values each week and, based on that, determine if additional changes in your treatment plan are necessary. If you have more questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/IntermountainMoms, and recommend us to your friends and family too.

Will my baby be big or overweight if I have gestational diabetes? -Dr. Madhushree Vijayakumar

01:52
It is not a myth, if you have gestational diabetes, you are at a risk of having a bigger baby as you sugars are going to be high.. nnThe definition of a macrosomic baby in India is around three and a half kilograms of weight. Indian women on an average are around 150 to 155 centimetres in height and have a lower BMI. If you are carrying a baby more than three and a half kilograms in weight, it is quite bigger for that mother, so the baby is large for gestational age.. nnThere are associated problems delivering bigger babies normally, there is a chance that the shoulders might get impacted, they could come out with a fracture or have a nerve problem..

How to Deal with Gestational Diabetes during Pregnancy

03:58
How to Deal with Gestational Diabetes during Pregnancy While all else may be going just fine, some expecting mothers start developing high blood sugar levels between the 24th and 28th weeks of pregnancy. This is known as gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Similar to other types of diabetes, gestational diabetes affects how your cells use sugar (glucose). Up to 9.2 percent of pregnant women suffer from this problem, according to a 2014 analysis by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In fact, it is recommended that all women get tested for gestational diabetes at the beginning of the third trimester. The exact cause of GDM is unknown, but the hormonal changes during pregnancy play a key role. During pregnancy, the body produces larger amounts of some hormones like human placental lactogen, estrogen and hormones that increase insulin resistance. These hormones affect your placenta and also interfere with the action of insulin, the hormone that regulates your blood sugar. Women over the age of 25 who suffer from high blood pressure, have a family history of diabetes and were overweight before becoming pregnant are at a higher risk of developing GDM. Also, women who have previously given birth to a baby weighing more than 9 pounds or had an unexplained miscarriage or stillbirth are at a higher risk. Some of the mild symptoms of gestational diabetes may include fatigue, blurred vision, excessive thirst and excessive need to urinate. Developing GDM during pregnancy doesn’t mean that you will have diabetes after delivery. In most cases, the blood sugar levels of pregnant women with gestational diabetes tend to return to normal within a few hour or days post delivery. However, it is recommended that women who had gestational diabetes during pregnancy get tested for diabetes every 2 to 3 years as they are at an increased risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. As gestational diabetes occurs in late pregnancy after the baby’s body has been formed, it does not cause the kinds of birth defects that can be seen in babies born to mothers who had diabetes before pregnancy. However, untreated or poorly controlled gestational diabetes can lead to macrosomia, or a “fat” baby. Babies with macrosomia can have very low blood glucose levels at birth or suffer from breathing problems. Such babies are at risk for obesity and Type 2 diabetes in the future. Gestational diabetes can be controlled and treated with lifestyle and dietary changes and medicines, in some instances. Here are the top 5 ways to deal with gestational diabetes during pregnancy. 1. Monitor Blood Sugar Level Regularly In order to reduce the risk of complications from gestational diabetes, it is important to keep a close eye on your blood sugar level. 2. Eat a Healthy Breakfast It’s very important to eat a healthy breakfast. Skipping breakfast is a big NO for pregnant women. 3. Eat the Right Carbohydrates Carbohydrates are an important part of any kind of diabetes diet, including GDM. Carbohydrates provide the fuel for your body and for your growing baby. 4. Eat High-Fiber Foods To keep your blood sugar level normal, it is important to increase your fiber intake. Fiber stimulates the activity of insulin receptors and inhibits the release of excess insulin into the bloodstream, thus helping to balance the blood sugar level. 5. Do Some Exercise Regardless of whether you have gestational diabetes, regular exercise during pregnancy is important. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Our Social Links: Subscribe To Our Channel : https://goo.gl/7YPKcz For more tips see our blog: https://naturalhealthcarenhc.blogspot.com like us in Facebook: https://goo.gl/MmjtyD Follow us on twitter: https://goo.gl/USDg3k Google plus: https://goo.gl/B5B2oz Special thanks to: http://www.top10homeremedies.com If you found this information cool, useful or valuable please hit share and let your friends benefit from this as well!

If I have gestational diabetes, how might it affect my baby, and will he be bigger than average?

02:36
Moms with diabetes, whether it be Type I, Type II, or gestational diabetes are more likely to cook large babies. It's because if your blood sugars aren't well controlled during your pregnancy you have a large amount of blood sugar circulating and this is getting to the baby as well. So they can grow extra large from having that extra sugar. It causes complications after delivery because their body is normal; they are producing insulin which is like a key that unlocks cells to put the blood sugar into the cell. Their body's response to this large amount of sugar is to produce a lot of insulin. This is great and what their body should do while they're inside of you. But once they're born and not getting all of that sugar, they still have a high level of insulin to compensate for that and it causes their blood sugar to rapidly drop. A lot of babies born to mothers with diabetes struggle with their own blood sugar after delivery. So the people who are taking care of your newborn will likely be in tune with this and be watching your newborn for signs of complications. But as for how big your baby is likely to be, who knows? It's hard to say. The chances of your baby being large are reduced by you controlling your blood sugars well during the pregnancy. So if your doctor has recommended a certain diet make sure you follow that and if your doctor has recommended medication to control your blood sugars, make sure you're taking that as prescribed and checking your blood sugars as frequently as your doctor has suggested as well. It's likely that in your third trimester you'll go to see some specialists that will watch you and the baby for signs of complications from diabetes. Usually your doctor will have you go to a specialist called a perinatologist to make sure that your baby is growing well and that the pregnancy overall is going well. They'll probably also have you talk with diabetic educators that will have you keep a log of your blood sugars and have you come in and discuss any complications or issues you're having with them. Your doctor is also likely to have you get frequent non-stress tests where you come in and they put your baby on the monitor, meaning they watch your baby's heart rate and your contraction pattern, for a short period of time to make sure your baby has enough oxygen and is doing well. If you have any other specific questions about your condition or about the things I've mentioned be sure to talk to your doctor and ask how they apply to you. But if you have any other questions for me feel free to ask them on our Facebook page and recommend us to your friends and family too.

Well, let me put it across in a simpler way. This type of diabetes is common in pregnant woman and remains only till the time of her delivery. After delivery the patient is considered no more a considered a diabetic. Some women are unfortunate when the gestational diabetes tends to stay on and goes not go away. This happens in very rare situations accompanied with other complications. Gestational diabetes during pregnancy is a temporary phase where the body goes through a number of changes. Did you know that gestational diabetes is also known as ‘Mellitis”? Let us have a brief look at what really causes diabetes in pregnant woman: Pregnant woman do not really need to worry about their blood sugar levels rising because it usually reaches normal levels during the course of time. I’m sure you all would want to know the reason for high sugar levels in pregnant woman! One major cause is the fact that the placenta produces more insulin than normally required by the body, and results in hormones getting blocked. Gestational diabetes occurs in women generally during the last semester of the pregnancy. The best way to make sure that you are not a diabetic is to get your blood sugar levels checked right after your delivery and regularly for the consecutive six months. A healthy diet for gestational diabetes is also very important to be followed. Pregnancy is one such phase in a women’s life which she always looks forward to. The period of pregnancy should be followed with some form of exercise for gestational diabetes. This would go a long way in making the pregnancy easier for the women. Risk factors for gestational diabetes: 1. Obesity: Women who are overweight are under a greater risk of getting gestational diabetes. Therefore it is important to keep a check on your weight during pregnancy. 2. High blood pressure: Pregnancy tends to increase the blood pressure levels in women. In order to avoid such a situation, it is always advisable to do some yoga or meditation to keep the mind calm. Some basic precautions to be taken during pregnancy are: Healthy diet plan:  It is important to follow a similar diet as a diabetic patient. Once the baby is born, the mother can go back to her normal eating habits since all the sugar parameters come back to normal levels. Food to be consumed by the patient is as follows- low fat skimmed milk, drumsticks, spinach, fenugreek etc.  Food that should be avoided is- Potatoes, beetroots, bananas, mangoes, grapes and custard apples. Exercising:  This is another way to maintain normal sugar levels in the body. Exercising like taking small walks or yoga can help you control the glucose levels in the body. A check on your weight: weight management is quite a task for many mothers to be! Controlling your weight can go a long way in keeping your sugar levels well under control. I hope this bit of information has been educational in some way to all of you! So remember gestational diabetes is just a temporary phase but can be problematic if you are not precautions. Why Do I Need To Be Induced With Gestational Diabetes?

10:48
Get our diabetes management guide here https://goo.gl/5t35JW According to Sam McCulloch in his article on Belly Belly dot come, gestational diabetes (GD) was once a relatively rare condition, occurring in about 4% of pregnancies. In recent years, the rate of women developing GD has doubled, and experts believe the incidence of the disease will keep increasing. Most women with GD are told by their care providers they will need to be induced before their due date, destroying their hopes for a natural and intervention free birth. Having GD can have a big impact on mothers’ and babies’ health during pregnancy, but does it really need to change how we give birth? First let’s answer the question, “What Is Gestational Diabetes?” Gestational diabetes is a condition that only occurs during pregnancy. Certain pregnancy hormones interfere with your body’s ability to use insulin. Insulin converts blood sugar into usable energy, and if this doesn’t happen, blood sugar levels rise. Insulin resistance can cause high blood glucose levels and can eventually lead to gestational diabetes. Some women will have symptoms of GD, while others will have none. Many women can manage the condition without treatment other than dietary and exercise changes. Around 20% of women will need insulin injections. So for many women, well managed diabetes means they can still have healthy babies and normal births. GD and Induction Of Labor. Many health care providers routinely recommend that women with gestational diabetes be induced around 38-39 weeks. The most common reasons given for induction at this gestation are to prevent stillbirth, and to prevent babies growing too large for vaginal birth. However, the evidence related to induction for women with GD comes from the review of one trial, which looked at 200 women who had either GD, Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. The World Health Organization states this evidence for induction before 41 weeks’ gestation is weak, and induction before 41 weeks should not be suggested if gestational diabetes is the only medical issue. The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) guidelines for gestational diabetes also do not recommend induction of labor before 39 weeks for women with well controlled GD. The evidence for induction of labor is neither strong, nor clear. A recent review looking at the evidence supporting indications for induction concluded there wasn’t strong enough evidence for induction of women with gestational diabetes. Why Be Induced? There are several reasons why care providers will recommend induction for women with GD. What is important to remember is that many of these complications are more relevant to those women whose condition is not well managed. Large Baby A large baby (macrosomia) is considered to be a problem if you have gestational diabetes. The extra sugar in your bloodstream crosses the placenta and triggers your baby to make more insulin. This can cause your baby to store more fat and tissue and be larger than average (over 9lb). It’s not possible to diagnose macrosmia before birth. Doing ultrasounds in the third trimester allows care providers to make an educated guess, but the estimated weight prediction can vary from the actual birth weight by up to 15%. In the US 10.4% of babies weigh more than 8 lb at birth. If you have GD, there is a 13.7% chance of having a baby over 9 lb, so the risk of having a large baby is increased, but not by a great deal. Keeping your GD well managed can reduce that risk of a large baby by up to 50%. If care providers believe a baby is already large for gestational dates, they might suggest early induction to avoid a c-section later. This is due to a fear of shoulder dystocia, which is when the baby becomes stuck in the pelvic outlet because his shoulders are too wide to pass through. Most care providers consider this a medical emergency, needing interventions — such as episiotomy, forceps or vacuum delivery, or emergency c-section. Even though shoulder dystocia can be prevented and managed by a care provider, it sometimes results in a nerve injury called brachial plexus injury. This injury can also occur in babies who don’t have shoulder dystocia, and even after elective c-section. Death from lack of oxygen due to shoulder dystocia is possible but it’s extremely rare. Stillbirth The risk of stillbirth is higher for women with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes and this is often used as an indication for induction for women who have gestational diabetes. High blood sugar can cause blood vessel damage to the placenta, which means poor oxygen and nutrient supply to the baby. This can lead to health complications for the baby, or to stillbirth or death. However, these complications rarely occur in pregnancies where gestational diabetes has been diagnosed and is well managed...

How to treat gestational diabetes? - Dr. Vijayalakshmi

04:14
The first step in the treatment of gestational diabetes is to modify your diet and lifestyle changes. When I say diet changes, it means reduce your carbohydrate intake because gestational diabetes is a condition where the blood sugar levels are high. We would like to keep it in the normal range where it is below 140 mg/dl even after two hours of diet. So by way of diet change, you have to minimize your intake of carbohydrates and at the same time, maintain a balanced nutrition for the growing fetus. So instead of cutting down on carbohydrates totally, I would advice you to take small, frequent meals or you can distribute the meal intake. In between three meals, you can take some fruits and still maintain the blood sugar in the same level.. nnBest advice will be to take more of proteins and vegetables and fruits. To minimize sugars, sweets, candies and pastries. Do not skip meals and go on diet during pregnancy.. nnA little bit of exercise and an active life is mandatory. If there is a contraindication to exercise, maybe you should go for some medication from your doctor. Exercise will be moderate walking for at least half an hour everyday in the morning or evening. Not too brisk walking or not stressful working at office.. nnYou may require frequent visits to the hospital as the doctor would like to monitor your blood sugar. Ideal would be to monitor your blood sugar at home. If you ever feel its more than 140 or 160, then visit the hospital. Maybe ultrasonography every month specially in the second trimester to make sure the baby is doing well. Other tests like NSTs, blood sugar and blood and urine tests will also be checked during your visit. If there are still complications, the doctor would like to put you on medication. With good diet and exercise, oral medication is sufficient. Insulin shots will be given otherwise. If things are not settling down, hospitalization is advised. Pre term delivery might happen if there are more complications..

How to Keep Blood Sugar Levels Normal During Pregnancy

01:40
Do you know how to keep blood sugar levels normal during pregnancy? The ways of keeping blood sugar normal during pregnancy are the same used by diabetics in general. Control your weight or lose weight. Women with prenatal diabetes or at risk of it have to avoid gaining a lot of weight, but you shouldn't try to diet during pregnancy. What should I do to control the blood sugar? Don't eat foods laden with sugar. Eat unsweetened cereal and whole grain breads instead of white bread. That's almost as bad as the Atkins diet. You can eat all the lean meat and vegetables you want if it is totally cooked. Don't eat anything with high fructose corn syrup added. There's plenty of fruit juices I could have instead of soda. Many fruit juices have sugar added. Diet soda is an option, though the salt makes water retention worse, while sugar-free juice just doesn't taste as good. I have seen diabetic eat a lot of small meals and snacks. That helps them keep their blood sugar even instead of highs and lows from eating every six hours. Should I eat anything at night? You probably should eat something before you go to bed. However, to lessen the impact on blood sugar, it should be high in protein. Won't protein affect my blood sugar? It digests very slowly in the body, which is why high protein foods are good for diabetics. Or those who are at risk for diabetes. Correct. But you don't want to develop diabetes. Because I don't want insulin injections. Or the excessive thirst and frequent urination, in excess of what you already have to deal with as a pregnant woman. Or the risk of a ten pound baby. Oh, that's literally torture.
