Enhanced levels of glutathione in prostate cells decreases your risk of developing prostate cancer. Prostate Cancer Risk Factors Your risk of developing prostate cancer is affected by factors such as age, ethnicity, family history and diet. About 70 percent to 90 percent of men by the age of 80 have had prostate cancer, the American Cancer Society says. People of African and Caucasian descent have a higher probability of developing prostate cancer than Latin Americans, the University of Maryland Medical Center notes. If you have brothers who have prostate cancer, then you are about 4.5 times more likely to have prostate cancer. If you have a father with prostate cancer, you are 2.3 times likely to develop it. Eating a diet with a lot of saturated fat will increase your testosterone production. Testosterone stimulates prostate growth and increases your chances of developing prostate cancer. Whey Protein Protection from Prostate Cancer Free radical build-up in the prostate area is closely associated with the onset of cancer, EurekAlert.org explains. Researchers at Ohio State University treated human prostate cells with whey protein for two days and measured the glutathione levels after. The human prostate cells treated with whey proteins increased glutathione levels by as much as 64 percent. The experiment also demonstrated that the sample treated with a dose that was half the concentration of the other increased levels of glutathione by about 60 percent. This suggests that even a small dose of whey protein can be immensely beneficial to prostate cells. Whey protein contains cysteine, an amino acid that increases glutathione in the prostate. Cysteine helps to make healthy levels of glutathione in the prostate. Healthy levels of glutathione in the prostate protects the gland from cancer. Whey Protein Dose As an appetite suppressant, adults should take up to 50 g of whey protein once a day, MayoClinic.com says. The dose can be adjusted to compensate for body weight at a rate of half a gram of whey protein for every kilogram of body weight. The recommended daily dose also varies according to purpose. Children under 18 years of age can take 1 g of whey protein per 1 kg of body weight. Whey Protein Side Effects and Interactions Whey protein lowers blood sugar levels and may increase the risk of bleeding, MayoClinic.com notes. Men who drink coffee regularly can lower their risk of prostate cancer. The study found that men who regularly consumed large amounts of coffee (more than six cups per day) had a 20% lower risk of developing regular cancer and a 60% reduced chance of developing the deadliest form of the disease. Consuming relatively small amounts of coffee, one -- three cups per day - lowered the risk of lethal prostate cancer by 30%. According to Dr. David Samadi, anti-oxidants found in coffee, caffeinated and decaffeinated, may reduce the odds of prostate cancer and reduce the likelihood of deadly tumors by altering levels of sex hormones that regulate blood sugar levels, insulin, and mitigate inflammation. Like many vegetables and fruits, the seeds of the pumpkin are packed with nutrition in a very small space. They can be eaten raw or toasted, in other foods or by the handful, or crushed to make pumpkin seed butter. The benefit of eating whole seeds (with the shell intact) is the fiber content of the shell, as it adds sixty percent more fiber than just the seed itself. Toasted, the shell adds a nice crunch. Other than having the ability to grow a new plant, pumpkin seeds can actually keep your body in prime shape. Here are just a few reasons to get on board with pumpkin seeds. 1. They Prevent cancer. Processed foods, personal care products, and food packaging contain chemicals that disrupt the endocrine system. There is also evidence that links some of these products to cancer in humans. Pumpkin seeds contain hormone regulators and antioxidants that can reduce the impact of endocrine disruptors and prevent the formation of cancerous cells. Studies prove the efficacy of these seeds in fighting breast, prostate, and colon cancer cells. The high zinc content in pumpkin seeds are effective in detoxifying the testes and may even be considered an aphrodisiac. Rich, too, in antioxidants and vitamin E, pumpkin seeds reduce cell oxidation and inflammation that can lead to many other diseases. 2. They Regulate Blood Sugar. In a 2012 Taiwanese study, pumpkin seeds were found to significantly reduce blood glucose levels in a short time. Here’s the conclusion of the study that blew us away: “Based on the results described, we propose that the major function of PCE-C [pumpkin crude extract] is not to stimulate ß-cells in the islets of Langerhans to increase insulin secretion, but rather restore the islets of Langerhans, repairing impaired islets or act as an insulin sensitizer to enhance insulin action by improving the insulin sensitivity of target tissues such as the liver, muscle and adipose tissue. Pumpkin polysaccharides may also play an important role in the recovery of liver function and glucose utilization”. The pumpkin seed extract didn’t simply stimulate the production of insulin, it healed the parts of the pancreas that manufacture it and improves your body’s ability to use the insulin. Similar results were found in a study of pumpkin fruit. It’s believed that the polysaccharides (long chains of single-molecule carbohydrates) of the seeds (and fruit) are the key elements responsible for these effects. The carbohydrates are also used in the body for energy and help promote healthy cell structure. 3. They Prevent Osteoporosis. Bone health requires exercise and proper nutrition, including magnesium, calcium, vitamin D, and phosphorus. Pumpkin seeds also contain iron, zinc, copper, manganese, and potassium. Georgia man says 'surprise' blood test reveals prostate cancer

Karl Lutz, 51, of Peachtree City, says the story of how he discovered he might be at risk of prostate cancer, begins with a blood test that he never set out to get. "Because I had absolutely no symptoms," Lutz says. "Zero symptoms." Lutz, married with two children, went in for a checkup two years ago at 49, concerned about his family's history of heart disease. Getting a blood test to measure his P-S-A level, wasn't even on his radar screen. "The only reason I got mine checked was that I happened to be in the doctor's office, and he mentioned it, and encouraged me right there on the spot to go ahead and do it," Lutz remembers. "If I'd thought about it, I probably never would have planned a visit to come get it checked. You know what I'm saying?" So, Lutz got a his PSA, or prostate-specific antigen, level checked that day. "PSA is just a blood test," says Georgia Urology urologist Dr. Scott Miller, who works with an organization known as ProstAware. "And it's a protein that all men have that have a prostate, at a certain level." Dr. Miller says many things can elevate a man's PSA level, like getting older, inflammation, an enlarged prostate gland, or even an infection. So, Miller cautions, an elevated PSA level does not mean a man has cancer. The two main risk factors for prostate cancer are being African American man, and having a family history of prostate cancer. But, because most men don't know their family's medical history, Dr. Miller recommends a baseline PSA check for men in their 40's. Other experts recommend men begin talking to their doctor about their risk for prostate cancer, and when to get tested, around 50. There is no "normal" or "abnormal" PSA level. "If it's far below a 1.0, then that patient has a very low likelihood of developing prostate cancer sometimes in the next 10 years," Miller says. "Whereas, if they're in their mid 40's and their prostate is approaching 2.0, that patient needs to be followed closely." Lutz's first PSA level was high, over 4.0. So, they repeated the test several times, checking it again. "And what it would do is fluctuate," says Lutz. "But, it would stay at that level, 4.2 to 3.5. And it stayed there for 24 months, actually." Then, when they checked his PSA level one more time, it had jumped to nearly 5.0. "At that point, I decided it was time to get a biopsy done," Lutz says. Dr. Miller says it's important to track PSA levels over time. "We often repeat the blood test," he says. "We see what risk factors that patient has. Is it appropriate for their age?" Because half of Karl Lutz's biopsied tissue samples were positive for cancer, and imaging tests showed the cancer was right on the edge of his prostate gland, in February of 2017, he underwent robot-assisted surgery with Dr. Miller to remove his prostate gland. "I read all these stories about the side effects, which I know they're there, because people experience them," Lutz says. "But, I'm going to tell you something, after 6 or 7 weeks, no side effects whatsoever. Everything works correctly." Karl Lutz says he's glad he took his doctor's recommendation and got tested. He's now cancer-free, and his life is once again back on track.

I think we've all experienced what happens when your body doesn't get enough sleep. Your brain isn't as clear, you feel tired and run down, you get irritated easily, sometimes feel depressed - you're just not your usual self. So, I think it's safe to say that we all realize that not getting enough sleep is not good for our bodies. But, what you may not know is that not getting enough sleep on a regular basis can lead to chronic disease. Even sleep deprivation for a short period of time can cause inflammation, impair glucose regulation and increase blood pressure. Below I've listed 5 diseases that can develop due to sleep deprivation, as well as, some tips on how to develop good sleeping habits. Number One : Heart disease Not getting enough sleep can lead to heart disease such as congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, heart attack and heart failure. A study of 657 Russian men over a 14 year period found that 2/3 of the men who developed heart disease also had some type of sleep disorder. Number Two : Depression A study in 2005 of people in the United States found that those people who reported having depression or anxiety also reported getting 6 or less hours of sleep per night. Findings of a study of 10,000 people in 2007 showed that those who reported having insomnia were 5 times more likely to report depression as those people who got at least 8 hours of sleep per night. Number Three : Prostate cancer and breast cancer Lack of sleep can also lead to the development of certain cancers, including breast cancer and prostate cancer. A study in hose who have their circadian rhythm disrupted, such as shift workers, are at an increased risk of developing cancer. A study of 2, 000 women between 2005 and 2008 found that the rate of breast cancer was 30% higher in women who worked late shifts. While men who don't get enough sleep are two times more likely to develop prostate cancer. Number Four : Diabetes Because lack of proper sleep decreases the body's ability to regulate glucose and makes it more insulin resistant, diabetes is more prevalent in those people who don't get enough sleep on a regular basis. When the body is insulin resistant, your body's cells aren't able to use insulin effectively which results in high blood sugar and diabetes. Number Five : Obesity It's estimated that 65% of Americans are overweight or obese. WOW! This is partly due to Americans' love of fast food and junk food and leading a sedentary lifestyle. But, obesity has also been linked to those who don't get enough sleep. Lack of sleep disrupts hormones that control appetite which could lead to people over-eating. Sleep deprivation also makes people feel more tired so that they don't feel like exercising. Some things you can do to help you get a better night's sleep are: Number One : Get plenty of exercise The more a person moves during the day, the more tired they feel at night. So, rather than staying up late, they go to bed early enough to get plenty of sleep. Number Two : Bedroom environment Your bedroom should be cool at night (between 60 to 70 degrees F. or 16 to 21 degree celsius. Also make sure to keep it nice and dark and insulated from noise. Number Three : Relax before bed Don't engage in exercise right before bed as it causes an increase in energy in your body. Instead, relax with a book or meditate before bed. Number Four : Have a sleep schedule Most infants and toddlers have a sleep schedule. Why should that change just because you're an adult? Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day even on weekends. In time, you will train your body to fall asleep at a certain time every night so that you get a restful sleep. Many cancers can be prevented by not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, not drinking too much alcohol, eating plenty of vegetables, fruits and whole grains and by avoiding many cancer causing foods you probably eat every day. Canned Tomatoes - Canned Tomatoes are not good for your health because the cans which is used to pack tomatoes are lined with a product called bisphenol A, BPA, an endocrine disruptor that may mimic or disrupt hormones and increase the risks for breast cancer, prostate cancer, early puberty, metabolic disorders, infertility, and several other problems. Microwave popcorn - Microwave popcorn is one of the most popular snacks in many parts of the world. But there are two safety issues involving the chemicals added into many brands of microwave popcorn. The first stems from the use of diacetyl in artificial butter flavor. Farmed salmon - Farmed salmon is nowhere near as healthy as wild salmon, and eating farmed salmon puts you at a higher risk of developing cancer. Farm-raised fish are fed unnatural diets and contaminated with chemicals, antibiotics, pesticides and other known carcinogens found in materials like asbestos. Processed meats or red meat - Processed meats such as ham, sausage and bacon have chemicals and preservatives like sodium nitrates, which make them bad for your health. A lot of men think being healthy means playing sports and hitting the gym. "While exercise is an important part of good health, it isn't the only thing you should do to take care of yourself," says Vincent Bartolomeo, MD, a family medicine physician with Adventist Hinsdale and Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospitals. "Being proactive about your health now can help prevent illnesses and conditions down the road." Dr. Bartolomeo offers these tips for living a healthier life: 1. Banish old stereotypes. It's a common stereotype that men don't like going to the doctor. When they finally make an appointment, it's only when there's a problem. "Men should schedule annual check ups with their physician, not just when they're sick," Dr. Bartolomeo says. 2. Know your risk. Dr. Bartolomeo suggests knowing which diseases you are at risk for and working with your physician to lower your risk. "Heart disease, stroke and diabetes are some of the top health concerns for men," he says. Lower your risk for chronic diseases by striving for the following numbers: •Cholesterol levels: Total count of less than 200mg/dL, HDL (good) cholesterol of more than 60 mg/dL, LDL (bad) cholesterol of less than 100 mg/dL • Blood pressure: 120/80 • Body mass index (BMI): Between 18.5 and 24.9 • Waist circumference: Less than 40 inches • Blood glucose level: Less than 100 mg/dL 3. Receive a prostate cancer screening. Besides skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and is rarely symptomatic until it enters the advanced stages. This is why men must be proactive about getting screened. During a prostate cancer screening, men will receive a prostate-specific antigen test (PSA) and a digital rectal exam. The PSA is a simple blood test that looks for a protein produced by the prostate gland. Elevated PSA levels can signal a prostate condition. A digital rectal exam checks for abnormal masses or enlargement of the prostate. "Don't wait for symptoms to arise before you check for a disease," Dr. Bartolomeo says. Men should receive these tests starting at age 50 or earlier if your doctor recommends it. 4. Start making healthy habits. Many diseases that affect men have similar risk factors, some of which can be reduced by an active lifestyle. "There's hardly a disease that exercise and a healthy diet won't help," says Dr. Bartolomeo. At Adventist Hinsdale and Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospitals, men can find all the resources they need to stay healthy. "Our physicians develop close relationships with patients," Dr. Bartolomeo says. "There's a feeling of support and community that patients can expect no matter what type of care they need."

When your largest meal comes at the end of the day there is a danger of having those calories ending up stored as fat. An after dinner walk can help, especially since activity can help lower your blood sugar without insulin. How Exercise Controls Blood Sugar Resting muscles draw no sugar from the bloodstream. However, contracting muscles can draw sugar rapidly from the bloodstream without even needing insulin (J Appl Physiol, 2005;99: 338-343 & 2005;8750-7587). This effect lasts maximally during exercise and up to an hour after you finish intense exercise, and tapers off completely around 17 hours after you have finished exercising (Am J Clin Nutr, 2008(July);88(1):51-57. Thus the most healthful eating pattern is to have your main meal mid-day, then have a light supper that is low in foods that cause a high rise in blood sugar. A study showed that exercise lowered high blood sugar levels in diabetics far more when done after eating dinner than before eating (Journal of the American Medical Directors Association, July 2009). Muscle contractions drive sugar into cells with little or no insulin. These people were out-of-shape diabetics who walked slowly and for only 20 minutes. Longer and more intense exercise lowers insulin and sugar levels even more and would be even more beneficial.
