MY STRUGGLE WITH BODY DYSMORPHIA AFTER LOSING 70 POUNDS

BDD is an anxiety disorder that is related to body image and there are many silent sufferers out there. I have never talked about this before, and it was very hard to make this video because yes I try to focus on the good things, the things I love about myself, I do everything I can to make myself feel good BUT it is very challenging, I think especially when I am in a position (that I have put myself in) where I get comments about my body hundreds of times a day, how I look, what I say, etc and I think I handle it very well mentally but it does take its toll overtime. Everyone who has a distorted body image experiences varying degrees of it. If you have gone through this please do not undermine my experience because yours was simply different, we all suffer in some way. Some people who have lost a lot of weight have trouble embracing their new, slimmer shapes. Throughout my weight loss journey its been very hard for me to see ANY changes. People always told me I looked great or they could see so many differences but to me I still felt like I looked the same. Of course this has gotten better as time went on, as I learned to love myself and not focus so much on the weight on the scale or the "progress" being made but for me, I think any type of me trying to improve my body shape, makes the problem worse. This phenomenon is sometimes called “phantom fat” or “phantom fat syndrome.” The medical term is body dysmorphic disorder. I think for me, sharing my weight loss journey online, doing body updates, trying new things to get leaner and fitter and the approval or disapproval that comes with that has really taken a toll on my mental health. From here on out I think it is best for me, to live a healthy balanced life and not try to "improve" my body anymore because I have found it to lead down a path that I dont want to take. I know that accepting myself the way I am and focusing on self love for what I look like NOW is what I need. I dont know the answers to all of this. This video is just to share my experience and get really fucking honest with myself about what I have been dealing with and how to fix it before it gets worse. But NONE of these things actually cause weight gain. If they did for example, everyone who over ate would be fat. The excess weight is only an outer effect of a deep inner problem. You have excess fat because you are subconsciously convinced that you need that excess weight. And despite all of the steps you try and take to lose the weight, your body is doing its very best to give you what you need... it's convinced you need the weight. So the question is: Why do I need the weight? What is the positive intention for it being here? Spend time sitting with this question and see what answers arise. The only lasting way to release weight is to release the underlying need you have for it and the underlying reasons for needing excess fat are probably not what you think they are. Losing weight is about releasing resistance to the current state of where you are by falling in love with it in any way you can. Then, it is about incrementally taking steps in the direction of the body you would like to have. This time from the place of wanting it because you love yourself instead of wanting it because you hate yourself. I'm going to reiterate this... You will lose weight the minute wanting to lose weight comes from a place of loving yourself instead of hating yourself. I used to be very fit (I played handball, did gymnastics and also Crossfit) but when I started my own business I had to put my work first for a year. This meant I gained 13kg (almost 29lbs). After I realised how much I had let myself go and how self-conscious and unhappy I was, I decided to make a change. Running wasn’t my favourite sport, but I did it anyway and I got used to running the sprint workouts and longer distances. I followed the instructions my Running Coach gave me in the app and trained 3 - 4 times a week, alone and in a small group. In all weathers. The hard work was worth it. In 3 months I lost 9kg (almost 20lbs) and got my old confidence back. I even fell in love with running! I still train with the app - I would miss it if I stopped. And now I want to add bodyweight and gym training - not because I have to, but because I like the challenge :) I can safely say that it works. The hard work is worth it. Whey protein is actually a tremendous tool for those of you looking to lose weight. That’s why today, I am going to show you exactly how to use whey protein for weight loss. Here are the 7 best tips and steps for beginners. 1. Understand what whey protein actually is. Whey is the liquid part of milk that gets separated when cheese is made. If you’ve ever opened a yogurt container and have seen a watery substance at the top, this is whey protein. This liquid substance is what is turned into powder form to create whey protein. Just in case you’re wondering, this process also cuts out the 95% of the lactose so if you’re allergic to dairy, you really have nothing to fear. 2. Understand the different types of whey protein powder. There are three main forms of protein powder: whey concentrate, isolate, and hydrolestate. Concentrate is about 70-80% protein with some milk sugar and fat. Isolate is 90% protein and has a little less sugar and fat. Hydrolysate is also known as hydrolyzed whey, has virtually 0 sugar and fat, and is mixed with enzymes for the faster digestion into the blood stream. So, you may be wondering, does the type of protein matter? Not really. The minute differences between to two are not enough that it should cause you any stress or concern. Leave that sort of worrying for your overall diet and exercise routine. For what it’s worth, most of the studies are done using whey isolate and it’s what I use as well. 3. Understand why protein works so well for weight loss There are 3 reasons are particularly compelling… #1. It will keep you full. Protein can cut down sugar cravings by as much as 60%. #2. It’s easy. As long as you have a blender bottle on hand, all you need to do is add water. Which is great to have on the go or at work where eating healthy is more difficult. #3. It preserves lean muscle tissue when dropping weight. This ensures that when you do lose weight the majority of it is fat. We talk a lot about protein on this channel and this is just the short list of reasons why. 4. Whey protein has lots of other proven health benefits, which helps the body function better and makes weight loss easier. Things like: Improves muscle performance Lowers blood pressure Reduces symptoms of stress Helps you get in more water naturally And contains a small amount of antioxidants. Are additional reasons why whey protein is important and helpful for weight loss. 5. What are the best times to take whey protein? In order of importance. Take 30 minutes before or after your workouts. This has been shown to help with muscle development and recovery after a workout. Take 30 minutes before meals or dinning out. This will help you keep you from binge eating and give you more control over what you eat when out with friends or family members. Finally, you can use it as a healthy snack. Whenever my chocolate cravings hit mid day, I use it to get in my chocolate fix without all the sugar. 6. What should you mix it with? Water or unsweetened nut milks like cashew, almond, and coconut work best. Try to avoid using milk as it has a good amount of sugar. FITNESS DIARY #1 Opening up about personal stuff is never easy, especially when I have trained myself to NEVER show vulnerability or weakness... yep, this is just one of many defense mechanisms I have LEARNED to implement over the course of years of being bullied for how I looked (among other things). This video is NOT about my past, but I feel it's important to mention certain aspects of my life to explain WHY I feel triggered by certain comments and WHY they affect me on a DEEPER LEVEL. As mentioned in my video, I have forgiven the individual who previously has body shamed me & thankfully we are on good terms now... out of respect, I won't be going into any further details. I have grown a lot from this whole experience and have moved on, however, when you have been emotionally and mentally damaged the way I was FOR YEARS, those feelings resurface... and things just get really dark. My only method of coping with darkness is to seek God's LIGHT. Something I NEVER sought out before and as a result, has led me into dark paths and behaviors. I now pray when I feel doubtful, read when I feel lost, and God re-centers my thoughts and clears the negative voices telling me I am not worthy. Marc: Yeah, so let me give viewers and listeners who are new to this podcast a sense of what we’re going to be doing. So for the next no more than an hour or so, we’re going to diving together and have a session and see if we can have some openings or for insights or some breakthroughs in a small amount of time. So this is just as turbocharging the coaching process, trying to take about—oh, I don’t know—six months worth of work and put it into one session. So it’s a little bit different than usual because we’re going to try to get right to the heart of the matter. And why don’t we just dive in, Coralie? So if you could wave your magic wand and get whatever you wanted from this session, what would the outcome be? Coralie: I just would want to be happy with myself without always questioning how I look and if I gain a pound and thinking about what I eat. Everybody looks at me like, “Oh, you have a great body. And you look good.” And I want to feel the same way they feel about myself. That would be wonderful. Marc: So what are some of the things that you say to yourself when you’re looking in the mirror? Do you have a specific number of pounds that you think you have to lose? Or are there very specific things you say to yourself or body parts? Coralie: Yeah, unfortunately. I didn’t weigh myself for the longest time. I feel like I’m 115. And I’m 5’4”. If I look at myself right now, I feel almost like I’m too fat. Not fat, but I’m really comfortable when I’m 104, which is not healthy. I know that. But I almost get a sense of lightness and high out of being really skinny, which is weird. Marc: So do you diet to maintain your weight? Do you exercise? What happens? Coralie: Well, I’m a runner. And I do enjoy running. I ran my first marathon in October. I did a lot of half marathons. I do run every day, every single day. And I have a really weird eating schedule, I guess. Some days I eat every day my breakfast, my lunch, my dinner. Some days I just have a salad for lunch and then a big dinner. Some days I skip breakfast, and I skip lunch and I have dinner. I never make up my mind on how I eat. I eat mostly organic, local. So I know about eating good, quality food. But I’m not really good with keeping up with a good schedule or circadian rhythm, talking about how I eat and I diet. Marc: So how long have you had this challenge where you look at your body, you think it’s too fat even though a part of you knows, “Wow, I’m thin. And everybody thinks that.” So how many years? Months? Coralie: I really got triggered when my sister passed away. So I was in my early twenties. So I’m thirty-five now almost. So probably fifteen years. It was not so bad during my teenage years, except before that. My sister passed away when I was twenty-three, going on twenty-four. So I think that really was the start of me exercising everything. First it was kind of a stress release. And I think I kind of felt like I had a control on something when I was doing that. And that’s what it’s been, I think, mostly, even if I really enjoy running.
