9 Thyroid supplements Every Hypothyroid Patient Should Consider Using

Thyroid supplements (if used correctly) can help boost your thyroid function, help with weight loss and help you feel better. The problem comes with knowing WHICH supplements to take and at WHAT dose. It takes over 13 nutrients to create thyroid hormone, convert T4 to T3 and sensitize the cellular receptors to T3. Many thyroid supplements cram all of these nutrients into a supplement and call it "good". This is the WRONG approach to take. Instead basing your supplementation off of the needs of your body is far superior. That means using lab work and other markers to find what nutrients you need in what doses. 9 Thyroid supplements that I find most hypothyroid patients are deficient in: 1. Vitamin B12 - Thyroid hormone is involved in the proper absorption of thyroid hormone. See the video for a complete list of symptoms. Repleting low vitamin B12 is best done through sublingual or intramsucular injections. 2. Adrenal support - Most thyroid patients also have issues with cortisol dysregulation. If you have advanced adrenal fatigue most patients do better on adrenal glandulars. For more mild disease consider using adrenal adaptogens. If your cortisol is elevated consider using phosphatidylserine. 3. Zinc - Low levels of zinc can cause issues with your skin and issue with hair growth. Adding zinc boosts immune function, T4 to T3 conversion and acts as an anti inflammatory. Make sure to supplement with zinc bound to picolinic acid. 4. Iron - This is what I consider a "goldilocks" nutrient in that you don't want TOO much or TOO little. Unfortunately most doctors look for iron deficiency anemia and don't necessarily jus treat iron deficiency unless anemia accompanies it. Use these optimal levels to supplement with iron. 5. Magnesium - Hypothyroidism alters magnesium and low levels of magnesium can lead to issues like depression, anxiety and other changes like muscle cramps or restless leg syndrome. Replace low levels with magnesium glycinate, magnesium citrate if you have constipation or magnsium threonate if you have neurological issues. 6. Selenium - This nutrient is involved in the thyroid conversion process. Not only that but supplementing has been shown to reduce TPO antibodies and boost the immune system. In addition using iodine with selenium can help reduce negative side effects. 7. Probiotics - Up to 20% of thyroid conversion happens in the gut and inflammation can reduce this number. Hypothyroidism sets up the gut for imbalances that lead to inflammation. Using probiotics can help improve your GI function. 8. Digestive enzymes - Hypothyroidism leads to low stomach acid which can predispose patients to malabsorption of certain nutrients. Using enzymes can help digest your food, increase nutrient absorption and if taken in between meals may promote the breakdown of immune complexes. 9. Iodine - If used correctly iodine can be helpful in boosting thyroid function. The thyroid hormone is made up of iodine moieties and low levels of iodine can reduce the amount of functioning thyroid hormone in the body. Each group is discussed in relation to one of four age brackets regarding their appropriateness. All of the supplements discussed are ones that I take myself and would recommend to others. You will not see any testosterone boosters or pro hormones because I don’t believe in them or recommend them to my viewers. Even the pre workout supplements must undergo severe scrutiny based on the dangers that have been shown to riddle that product category for the past couple of years. All that said however, I make it very clear that any supplementation plan must start with a commitment to good nutrition. My answer is that it really depends on you. I will show you the pros and cons of rice and go over what I believe is the healthiest rice today. There is a debate today about if you should consume rice or not: ⁃ The paleo diet community says to stay grain-free and therefore that rice is not healthy ⁃ Chinese medicine followers and vegans think rice can be an incredible superfood I believe there is validity to both but it depends on the person and the preparation of the rice. Rice to stay away from: Refined White Rice (This is not jasmine or basmati rice but the sticky white rice from fast food or Chinese restaurants.) Rice Cons: • Fiber, minerals and vitamins have been removed. • Study shows that people are twice as likely to develop diabetes as opposed to those eating whole grain brown rice. • Contains phytic acid (enzyme inhibitor) which keeps you from absorbing and digesting vitamins and minerals. • Contains proteins that are difficult to digest Rice Pros: • Whole grain brown rice is high in B3 which is good for heart health. • Whole grain brown rice is high in selenium which supports the thyroid and kidneys. • Certain types of rice contain GABA, a neurotransmitter that can support the brain and help reduce anxiety as well as support metabolism. So ... is rice healthy? Is brown rice healthy? It depends on how it is prepared. I believe if rice is soaked and sprouted, it unlocks the vitamins and minerals versus most rices that aren’t sprouted. I personally consume an organic rice from the company, True Roots. It is a germinated brown rice (soaked and sprouted) which kills off phytic acid and is easier to digest. In Chinese medicine, look up “qi” or “chi.” They believe that short grain brown rice increase your body’s “qi” which is your body’s life source and energy. It is considered to be one of the #1 healing foods. I suggest my patients make a “congee” with chicken bone broth, brown rice and vegetables such as carrots and celery. This chicken vegetable rice soup is healing and nourishing to the body. In conclusion, is rice healthy? Yes, it can be if you are doing sprouted rice that is traditionally prepared. It also acts as a transport medium for electrons to travel within the cells and is needed for many enzymes to function normally. Fatigue and Tiredness Fatigue and tiredness are common in people who have a low iron level. Iron is important for maintaining optimum levels of hemoglobin, which is the oxygen-carrying chemical in the bloodstream. Lack of oxygen in the body causes constant fatigue and tiredness. A 2000 study published in Quality of Life Research suggests that iron deficiency is associated with decreased general health and well-being and increased fatigue. If you are frequently tired and feeling fatigued, get your blood checked to find out whether you have an iron deficiency. Proper diagnosis and timely treatment will help reduce the symptoms quickly. 2. Shortness of Breath Due to a low iron level, less oxygen reaches different parts of your body. When the body’s oxygen level is low, it will cause shortness of breath, no matter how deeply you breathe. This shortness of breath occurs even while doing things that you’d normally handle just fine, such as climbing the stairs, taking a short walk or even carrying small objects. The breathlessness can be mild, moderate or severe, and breathing often returns to normal after a rest period. If you need to puff for air more often, get your iron level checked to rule out the possibility of this nutrient deficiency. 3. Pale Skin Another common sign associated with iron deficiency is pale skin or a washed-out appearance. Due to a low iron level, your body is unable to manufacture sufficient hemoglobin. It’s the hemoglobin that gives your blood its red color and your skin its rosy hue. As the iron deficiency worsens, your skin begins to lose its normal color and becomes pale. This sign is more prominent in people who have a lighter skin tone. If your skin starts looking paler than usual and you are not sick, consult a doctor to determine the cause. 4. Brittle Nails If your nails look pale, fragile and brittle, it can be a possible sign of iron deficiency. Along with brittle nails, a concave or spoon-shaped depression in the nails can indicate an insufficient iron level in the body. A low iron level hampers your body’s ability to produce enough hemoglobin, which helps carry oxygen throughout your system, including to your nails. This lack of oxygen prohibits the healthy growth of your nails. Apart from nutritional deficiencies, aging, long-term use of nail polish and frequent exposure to water can lead to brittle nails. 5. Hair Loss There are many possible causes for hair loss and iron deficiency is one of them. A low iron level sends your body into survival mode, during which it channels oxygen to support vital functions as opposed to less important functions like hair growth. In fact, women with iron deficiency are at a risk of telogen hair loss, according to a 2009 study published in Acta Dermatovenerologica Croatica. To find out whether an iron deficiency is the cause of your hair loss, it is important to measure the amount of ferritin in the blood. 6. Craving Nonfood Substances Pica is a condition in which a person has an unusual craving for non nutritive substances that can cause significant health risks. This condition can be sign of a low level of iron or other nutrients in the body. In a 2010 study published in the Journal of Medical Case Reports, experts considered pica an important sign of iron deficiency that should never be ignored. The first is to stop using the word diet. This implies a short term solution when what you really need is a long term, lifetime approach to eating. The second is to stop listening to the age old advice of “eat big, get big” since it just is not true. In this video, I show you the real problem that is keeping you or someone you know too skinny. Often times it has nothing to do with the amount of calories that are being taken in on a daily basis, but rather the quality of the calories that are being eaten. I’m going to show you real world examples of how this plays out time and time again. Using myself as the example, and hardgainer Jesse as well, you will get to see exactly what I ate as a child that was holding back the gains I was supposed to be seeing. To begin, most skinny guys are eating enough calories. I know, shocking huh? It isn’t some super high metabolism that is keeping them skinny. That helps a bit, but more importantly, there is a dearth of quality calories coming in that often times derails the pursuit of muscle growth. A true muscle building diet should contain high amounts of each food, but only after the quality of that food is secured. Muscle building diets should consist of the standby ingredients like oatmeal, vegetables, protein sources, etc. That said, the type of diet plan that I show you here (with a sample breakfast) is devoid of most of these let alone vitamins, minerals and good overall dense calories. This can be fixed however, if you allow for a bit of a transition time rather than trying to reach your goal right away. The problem most people make is trying to make too large of a change right away. Instead, what you want to do is see if you can identify a middle ground between how you are currently eating and how you know you should be eating. If you can do this, you can more easily take steps to start eating more in line with where you want to go rather than forcing yourself to try and adopt this completely foreign way to feed yourself. Remember, if it feels too much like work, then your mind is eventually going to treat it like work and sooner or later you are going to want to “call in sick”! A 2006 study published in Surgical Neurology reports that omega-3 fish oil supplements worked just as well as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in reducing arthritic pain and are a safer alternative to NSAIDs. When your diet lacks omega-3 fatty acids, you may have difficulty losing the extra pounds. In fact, when you wish to lose weight, increase your intake of omega-3 fatty acids and reduce your carbohydrate intake. Due to low carbohydrate intake, fish oil your body has no other option but to access stored fat for energy. Omega-3 fatty acids can also lead to a higher resting metabolic rate and even speed up cell activity, which means your body can burn more calories. These fatty acids also suppress appetite because of their effect on leptin levels, a hormone that affects appetite. Another sign of an omega-3 fatty acid deficiency is dry,omega 3 supplements itchy or flaky skin. These fatty acids are needed by the oil-producing glands, the skin’s natural moisturizers in your body. This is turn maintains healthy skin cell membranes and produces ample amounts of lipids. If your pulse rate is too high (tachycardia), it will be keep your body from fully relaxing and drifting into a deeper sleep. I believe it is your pulse rate that ultimately prevents a good night sleep. What causes a high pulse rate? It could be stress, it could be nutrition. But here are the factors: 1. Low potassium. This could come from a lack of dietary potassium because most people do not consume enough vegetable or salad. It can also be insulin resistance, in which cause your cells are not absorbing minerals, esp, potassium. 2. Low vitamin B1 could also raise your pulse rate. Refined flour products or refined sugar will deplete B vitamins and this is why you see "enriched flour" in many of the breads, pasta, cereals, etc. They enrich it with synthetic B-vitamins. 3. Hyperthyroid condition. If your thyroid is working too fast, your pulse rate will definitely spike. Whats up dudes, and whats up ladies, Bryan here and in this video we are going to look at stress. What is it, what causes it, and what can we do about it? So, Lets roll. Stress hormones Stress is your body's way of reacting to any kind of demand or threat. When the body feels stress, your hypothalamus, a tiny region in your brain, signals your adrenal glands, located atop your kidneys, to release a surge of hormones, which include adrenaline and cortisol, into the bloodstream. As these hormones are released, the liver is triggered to produce more blood sugar, which gives you an energy kick, breathing becomes more rapid, and heart beat and blood pressure rise. If the stress is caused by physical danger, these chemicals can be beneficial, as they give you more energy and strength, and also speed up your reaction time and enhance your focus. But, if the stress is caused by something emotional, it can be harmful, because there is no outlet for this extra energy and strength. Once the source of the stress has passed, hormone levels return to normal as do heart rate and blood pressure, and other systems also return to normal. This is a really valid question because the way that mass building supplements are marketed they tend to really appeal to the serious hard gainer. Optimum Nutrition is one of the most reputable names in the supplement industry – so I was excited to look under the hood and break down each individual ingredient. I headed down to my local Vitamin Shoppe and purchased a big 6 lb tub of ON Serious Mass and analyzed the entire ingredient label and even did a complete taste test. Just as I suspected there are a lot of pro’s and a lot of con’s. In this video I dive in and take a look at the ingredient label and first get into the pro’s of the popular mass builder Serious Mass. Serious Mass Pros: When you purchase Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass you really don’t have to purchase a multi-vitamin. Another benefit is that you will have no problem getting in your carbohydrate content with Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass. You get about 252 grams of carbs per serving – so this makes it really easy to get all of your carbohydrates in per day. The fact that it has so many carbs makes it really useful for a post workout mass building shake that also replenishes depleted glycogen stores. Another thing that I liked was that Optimum Nutrition added in BCAA’s, glutamine, and creatine. These are proven mass builders and will help with muscle growth and recovery. Last but not least – since this is a mass builder, it has to be stated that Optimum Nutrition packs in over 1,200 calories per serving. This will make it very easy to enter a calorie surplus if you are consuming 1 serving every single day. Some good things here so far, but let’s take a look at the cons of this supplement as well! Serious Mass Cons: To be fair to you guys, let me preface this section by saying that this supplement has a lot more con’s than pros. Take a close look at this section before you spend your hard earned money on this mass building supplement. The first negative mark on this supplement is although it contains 1,250 calories per serving it only contains 8 servings per container. In the entire 6 lb tub you will only get 8 full servings! I think most guys are under the impression when they buy a giant tub that is 6 lbs. it will have close to 50 servings – but this is certainly not the case. Another major negative aspect that I noticed was that this entire container only has 400 grams of protein, or about 50 grams per serving. This may seem like a lot, but I took a look at the entire 4.2 lb. tub of combat protein powder and it contained a whopping 1,300 grams of high quality protein! Protein should be the main ingredient in any serious mass builder – but sadly the carbohydrates drastically outweigh the protein content. Most of the ingredients in this supplement are carbohydrates. Maltodextrin is a really cheap ingredient, and you can purchase a large 10 lb. tub of pure maltodextrin for less than 20 dollars! Another major check mark is that this has some major allergy warnings. Serious mass contains wheat, soy, dairy, and egg! These are the 4 most common allergens – so make sure you are careful if you are sensitive to any of these things. Last but not least – this product contains creatine, but ONLY 8 GRAMS in the entire 6 lb. tub. This is only 1.5 tsp and is barely enough to be noticeable. You are much better off buying your creatine separately and adding to your protein shakes, which is exactly what I do. Overall I’m going to give this popular Mass Builder a C. There are certainly better options out there, and I recommend making your own mass builder instead of buying this processed formula. This 1950s film made by the Calvin Company and presented by Philipps Petroleum Company, features professor William A. Albrecht. Dr. Albrecht explains in the film how ''dumb animals'' such as the goat and the cow, always know which plants are healthier for them. This classic film presents Dr. Albrecht's pioneering work exposing the connection between animal and human health and soil fertility. The film shows images of sick Americans and children problems in their teeth requiring dentistry, and adults addicted to prescription drugs. "Is there a connection between human an animal health? One man who pondered these questions was Dr. William A. Albrecht of the University of Missouri..." William A. Albrecht (1888–1974) PhD, Chairman of the Department of Soils at the University of Missouri, was the foremost authority on the relation of soil fertility to human health and earned four degrees from the University of Illinois. As emeritus Professor of Soils at the University of Missouri he saw a direct link between soil quality, food quality and human health. He drew direct connections between poor quality forage crops, and ill health in livestock and from this developed a formula for ideal ratios of cations in the soil, the Base Cation Saturation Ratio. While he did not discover cation exchange in the soil as is sometimes supposed, he may have been the first to associate it with colloidal clay particles. He served as 1939 President of the Soil Science Society of America. Twenty years before the phrase 'environmental concern' crept into the national consciousness, he was lecturing from coast to coast on the broad topic of agricultural ecology. " The soil is the ‘creative material’ of most of the basic needs of life. Creation starts with a handful of dust.” Dr. William A. Abrecht. Albrecht was a devout agronomist, the foremost authority on the relation of soil fertility to human health and earned four degrees from the University of Illinois. He became emeritus Professor of Soils at the University of Missouri. Dr. Albrecht saw a direct link between soil quality and food quality, drawing direct connection between poor quality forage crops, and ill health in livestock. From the late 1930s, as Chairman of the Department of Soils at the University of Missouri, he began work at the Missouri Agricultural Experiment Station investigating cation ratios and the growth of legumes. He had been investigating cattle nutrition, having observed that certain pastures seemed conducive to good health, and at some point he came to the conclusion that the ideal balance of cations in the soil was "H, 10%; Ca, 60 to 75%; Mg, 10 to 20%; K, 2 to 5%; Na, 0.5 to 5.0%; and other cations, 5%". While Albrecht was a highly respected soil scientist, he discounted soil pH, stating that "plants are not sensitive to, or limited by, a particular pH value of the soil." Instead, he believed that the benefits of liming soil stem from the additional calcium available to the plant, not the increase in pH. This belief has continued to be held by followers to this day, despite much evidence to the contrary. Like much of the early research into BCSR where soil pH was not controlled, it is difficult to draw solid conclusions from Albrecht's research in support of BCSR. "..."You have to have a vision. Throughout his life, Albrecht looked to nature to learn what optimizes soil, and attributing many common livestock diseases directly to those animals being fed poor quality feeds. He observed that : "...“Food is fabricated soil fertility.” Albrecht was a prolific author of reports, books and articles that span several decades, starting with his reports on nitrogen fixation and soil inoculation in 1919. Albrecht was outspoken on matters of declining soil fertility, having identified that it was due to a lack of organic material, major elements, and trace minerals, and was thus responsible for poor crops and in turn for pathological conditions in animals fed deficient foods from such soils. He laid the blame as: "NPK formulas, (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) as legislated and enforced by State Departments of Agriculture, mean malnutrition, attack by insects, bacteria and fungi, weed takeover, crop loss in dry weather, and general loss of mental acuity in the population, leading to degenerative metabolic disease and early death.
