Asthma Myth: Use of steroids as a treatment option and its side effects

02:08
A lot of parents have concerns about side effects from steroids. Steroids are present inside all of our bodies but when we use them as a medicine, they can help treat inflammation and swelling, which is a big part of asthma. Steroids come in many different forms, as well as many different doses. When steroids are given by mouth, or through a shot, the dose is a lot higher than what we use when given through an inhaler. An important thing to remember is that the steroids we use in medicine to treat asthma are not the same as anabolic steroids which are used by weight lifters and athletes to make their muscles big and strong. Your child will not develop big muscles by using their inhaler or any of the side effects associated with anabolic steroids. There is a common side effect that can occur if you use inhaled steroids, however. This is called thrush. Thrush is a white coating that can develop inside the mouth or on the tongue. It is very easy to treat if it does occur. However, it is also very easy to prevent. Just make sure that your child brushes their teeth and tongue after they use their inhaler or rinses their mouth. This should be done every time they use their steroid inhaler to help prevent thrush from occurring. what's a safe dose of prednisone

04:45
http://www.arthritistreatmentcenter.com Is there such a thing as a safe dose of prednisone? What is a safe dose for patients with rheumatoid arthritis? A spirited debate was published in the Rheumatologist, a magazine I get. The topic was the use of prednisone in rheumatoid arthritis. Recent guidelines produced by the American College of Rheumatology regarding treatment of rheumatoid arthritis omitted the use of prednisone. Dr. John Kirwan, a professor at the University of Bristol, who wrote several papers showing that prednisone had disease-modifying effects and held back the destructive processes of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) made his pitch. He advocated the use of prednisone in combination therapy for this condition. Dr. Theodore Pincus, a professor at NYU, advocated the use of low dose prednisone (less than or equal to 5 mgs a day). He provided evidence that it was safe and effective at that dose. Dr. Anthony S. Russell, a professor at the University of Alberta issued the counterpoint. He provided historical data showing that prednisone had long term toxicity without significant benefit (in his opinion.) With all due respect to Dr. Russell, much of the data he cited was old data when higher doses of prednisone were used. He also contended that primary care doctors would be tempted to use prednisone if they saw rheumatologists using it. My opinion is this. I use low dose prednisone a lot in my practice. By low dose, I mean 5 mgs or less. I think it is effective as an add- on therapy. It is also a great "bridge" if the patient is transitioning therapies. I have seen very little long term toxicity associated with this low dose approach. And I think the benefits derived from improved activities of daily living far outweigh the negatives. I do think that doses higher than 5 mgs should be avoided if possible. I also don't think the primary care issue is that big a deal although I admit... I have seen some indiscriminate use in my community. http://youtu.be/cCl_0ydLKio 29%

Dr. Peter Saul explains how corticosteroids are used by the body to respond to stress and how these responses are mimicked through the use of corticosteroid allergy treatments. In this short video, the side effects of steroids in tablet form are explored and the safer use of topical steroids is highlighted. Topical steroids can be administered using an inhaler (for asthma), Nasal Spray (acting directly on the lining of the nose) and as steroid creams (to treat skin inflammations). Safety of Prednisone for ITP

01:42
http://naturalhealth24-7.com When diagnosed with ITP, many doctors first line of defense is the use of Prednisone. Prednisone is a synthetic corticosteroid drug that is particularly effective as an immunosuppressant drug. It is used to treat certain inflammatory diseases (such as moderate allergic reactions), some autoimmune diseases, and (at higher doses) some types of cancer, but it has significant adverse effects. Prednisone is certainly in the nuclear weapon category. Lots of "collateral damage." Taking a stimulating factor will get the platelet count up a bit, but it's a little like pushing harder on the gas peddle when the car is stuck in first gear. Better approach is to deal with the real problem -- too much inflammation. How to reduce that without the collateral damage? Number of options -- best to use them all: maintain your vitamin D level at 60-80. That might be tough to do initially with sun exposure if you have SLE. Healthy dose of omega-3 such as krill oil. Anti-inflammatory herb cocktail such as Zyflamend. Healthy dose of proteolytic enzymes such as serrapeptase, Vitalzym, Wobenzym -- taken between meals Reduce or eliminate intake of gluten, casein, refined sugar, & processed foods.

Tips for managing allergies!!

07:07
FOR THE TL;DR CROWD: 1- Use a new-gen allergy pill like allegra, claritin, zyrtec, etc for at least 2 weeks prior to allergy season. Take it daily until allergy season is over. also... 2- Use a nasal steroid spray. There is an OTC called Nasicort now for $20, and you can get Flonase with prescription, or another generic. They all help fight nasal/sinus inflammation. Use a week prior to allergy season and it will make your life better. 3- Keep a "pollen free zone" in your home. Don't wear street clothes on your bed, and don't wear outside clothes into your room. Shower after being outside!!

Allergies to Hyaluronic Acid Fillers are Rare, but Other Factors Can Cause Swelling and Redness

More on Restylane: http://prasadcosmeticsurgery.com/restylane-perlane/ To learn more about Dr. Prasad's background and training, please go to: http://prasadcosmeticsurgery.com/dr-amiya-prasad/ A lady had Restylane treatment for hollowness under her eyes. Both her eyes were swollen shut the next day, and with a lot of redness. She did not have any bruising after treatment. She started Prednisone, a corticosteroid used for inflammation, to treat her swelling, but without the supervision of a doctor. She now has swollen bags near her eyes which never had before. New York Oculofacial plastic surgeon Amiya Prasad, MD reviews her concerns in this video, where he states that allergies to hyaluronic acid fillers like Restylane are extremely rare, but other factors may have caused an allergic reaction, which is important to determine and treat under medical supervision: 1:40 - Dr. Prasad’s background training and experience with using hyaluronic acid fillers like Restylane under the eyes to treat hollowness 2:03 - Why it is important to reach out the doctor who performed the procedure, and have professional medical guidance when using a drug like Prednisone 2:29 - How there is low likelihood of an allergy to Restylane or hyaluronic acid, which is so exceedingly rare that allergy skin tests are not used 2:56 - How collagen fillers in the past were derived from a bovine source, so allergy skin tests were needed 3:13 - How an allergic reaction that caused the swelling could be due to something else: topical anesthetic, moisturizer or make-up 3:34 - How Prednisone is effective to treat allergic reactions, but should only be used with medical supervision, so an allergist can be consulted for the cause of swelling 3:52 - How the lump is most likely excess filler in an undesirable location, so the recommendation is to dissolve it with hyaluronidase 4:18 - How excess filler application is a common concern, with Dr. Prasad’s patients coming from around the country to have the material dissolved with hyaluronidase, and then starting from scratch in applying filler again 4:53 - How finding the cause of swelling is important, as allergies should not be ignored CONNECT WITH US! Side effects and long-term effects of taking Advair/Prednisone/Steroids for Asthma

01:59
Usually when patients have problems with asthma/allergies/sinusitis (especially asthma) the typical conventional response is to give them medications to inhibit their immune system, mainly steroids and prednisone. As a matter of fact, it's the first line treatment that's recommended to treat people with those types of problems. They created Advair (it's a medicine called serevant and prednisone) so you don't necessarily know that there are steroids in that medication. It's a spray that works every twelve hours. What it does is that it dilates your bronchioles, gives you a bunch of steroids that would get systemically absorbed, and over time, you form less of your own steroids (or cortisol) that you would need to fight off allergies. The best way is to get at the cause of the problem, use certain vitamins and nutrients, and you can shut off some of the allergic response, and get people off some of these medications. I was on prednisone - twenty milligrams a day for two and a half years - so I know a lot about prednisone (that was for a type of joint pain and inflammation). The bottom line is: get at the source of the problem, make your body more alkaline/less acidic, and eliminate the foods and chemicals that act as triggers, and you can get people off these medications that cause all sorts of problems down the road. What kinds of problems? Well there are sleep problems. You put someone on steroids, they wind up having insomnia; inability to get REM sleep. They wind up with fatigue; it drops their blood sugar. They wind up with chronic yeast problems. It's immunosuppression. these people wind up getting colds more frequently, needing more and more antibiotics, all of which never gets at the cause of the problem, and then they get stuck on the medicines like I did. There are ways to get at the source of the problem, and pick lower-risk high-gain approaches then pick these steroids that have lots of systemic problems with them; thinning your bone, osteoporosis, and a whole range of other problems. The facts about your dog and prednisone

10:14
Dr. Susan McMillan, owner of Vet to Pet Mobile Veterinary Service discusses prednisone. This episode is sponsored by MoleKule. Molekule is offering $75.00 off your first order by mentioning vettalk.  What is prednisolone? Well, when prednisone enters the kidneys, it is activated as prednisolone. If there is weak or compromised liver function, prednisolone for dogs may be administered instead for the same effects. Both prednisone and prednisolone are catabolic steroids. Their primary function in dogs is to relieve swelling and inflammation that arise due to any number of medical conditions. Let’s learn more about prednisone for dogs, its uses, and its potentially dangerous side effects! What is prednisone used for in dogs? Prednisone has a wide range of applications for medical treatment in dogs. Usually, it is deployed in treating severe allergies, or other conditions that involve a great deal of swelling and inflammation. These include, but are not limited to: Breathing problems, such as asthma or respiratory infection Joint pain associated with arthritis Skin irritations or itching due to allergic reactions, eczema, or dermatitis Severe allergic reactions, like anaphylactic shock Addison’s disease, in which adrenal function is compromised Cancer, including lymphoma Irritable bowel syndrome Prednisone and prednisolone for dogs are very useful steroids, but very strong, twice as powerful or more than the cortisol naturally produced by their own adrenal glands. It should be administered with great care and precision. What is the proper dosage of prednisone for dogs? Is there a standard prednisone dosage for dogs? Not really. For humans, typical prednisone dosages include 20mg, 10mg, and 5mg. Dogs come in so many shapes and sizes that standard human dosages are far too high for them to tolerate. A dog’s veterinarian will take size, age, weight, and overall health condition, as well as the state of the dog’s liver to process steroids, into account before prescribing a dosage that is individually tailored to them.     How is prednisone administered? Prednisone and prednisolone are versatile steroids, and are available in a number of formats. Prednisone can be given orally, topically, or by direct injection. It can be prescribed for dogs as tablets, pills, eye drops, liquid, syrup, injection, or topical ointment. A dog’s veterinarian will determine which form and what prednisone dosage are best for a given dog, based on the dog’s condition and particular needs. Side effects of prednisone in dogs Side effects of prednisone for dogs are not mild, and can affect multiple internal and external systems, and yield a number of behavioral changes. Unless the situation is dire indeed, prednisone and prednisolone should be avoided when it comes to treating puppies, very young dogs, and dogs that have diabetes or are pregnant. It is particularly dangerous for young dogs and puppies, since long-term use of prednisone can slow or inhibit their normal patterns of growth and restrict their progress toward physical maturity.

Ed's Meniere's Disease: Sinusitis Treatment and Recommendations

14:06
Sinusitis -- inflammation of the Sinuses from ANY cause (Viral Infection, Bacterial Infection, Inhalation of fumes, Mechanical Irritation, or Allergies) There are 4 Pairs of Sinuses (one on each side): Frontal sinus, Maxillary sinus, Ethomoidal sinus, Sphenoidal sinus and Mastoid Air Cells 5 Steps of treating Sinusitis: 1) Open and clear 2) Drain and Flush 3) Dry mucus production 4) Anti-inflammatory Treatment 5) Moisturize with Humidified air 1) Open and Clear - For a Quick brief opening of frontal and Maxilary sinuses, roll tongue backwards to roof of mouth and Push finger or thumb between eyes (third eye) for 20 seconds. Also massage upper mid sinus area. - Peppermint, Pine, Menthol, and Eucalyptus are great natural essence oils that will help open up the sinuses (put a few drop in humidifier). - Neo-Synephrine (Phenylephrine) OR Afrin (Oxymetaziline) Sprays. ONLY USE ONE OR ANOTHER BUT NOT BOTH. NOT USE FOR MORE THAN 3 days or you will have a severe rebound worsening. - Sudafed (Pseudoephedrine) taken orally works very well. Safe to take for short periods -- 1 week. BUT it is a stimulant and is used to make illicit "crank or speed" 2) Drain and Flush - BLOW your nose and try postural drainage (rotating the head in all directions). - Flush out Maxillary and Ethmoid sinuses with Saline pH Balanced Salt Rinse. Recommend the Nellie Pot or Neil Med Sinus rinse. Buy the packets and do NOT use regular waters = it will sting if not Osmotical and pH balanced. You can make your own, but not worth the risk of being off with the ratios and infection from water. - Saline rinse in can will also work, but may not clear as well. 3) Dry Mucous production - Drowsy side effect Antihistamines: Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) , Chlor-Trimeton (Chlorpheniramine), Dimetapp (Bromopheniramine) are usually MORE drying but also very sedating. They have EXTRA benefits by decreasing vertigo and work well to block allergic reactions. - Non or Minium drowsy antihistamines: Claritin (Loratadine), Allegra (Fexofenadine) and Zyrtec (Certirizine) also work just as well for allergic reactions, but are less drying and sedating 4) Anti-inflammatory Treatments - All the Above Antihistamines will decreased inflammation by blocking allergies. - Flonase (Fluticasone) OR Nasarel (Flunisolde) are topical steroids sprayed directly in sinuses. - Prednisone = strong oral steroid which should be only used if severe and chronic. - Antibiotics (Amoxacillin, Cephalexin, trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole) again only helpful if sinusitis is chronic (Greater than 4 weeks) with fevers and purulent discharge. 5) Moisturizing with Humidified air Use humidifier, wet warm washcloth, and hot showers. Also try Ayr Saline Drops or Gel. Sounds counter productive, but absolute must in sinusitis to keep sinuses form clogging up again. Will absolutely help relieve symptoms.

3 Mins to Health: The Natural Treatment for Allergies

02:52
3minstohealth.com Are monstrous allergies clogging up your nose, making your eyes watery, and preventing you from carrying out your daily activities? People residing in New Jersey, the Garden State, can relate to these symptoms, as pollen in the air can cause a person to get horrible fits of sneezing and coughing. What do people do to relieve themselves of these symptoms? They reach for a bottle of Allegra, Zyrtec, and Clartin, all forms of antihistamines. What are Antihistamines? When your eyes redden, your nose starts to run, and sinus sets in, histamines have gotten a hold of your body's mucous membranes. Mucous membranes line the nasal passageways and are found in the nostrils, lips, eyelids, and the ears. To alleviate these symptoms, people are referred to take antihistamines, which eliminate the symptoms drying out the mucous membranes. Although you feel much better, your body from within gets weaker, as it will rely on the antihistamines to get them through the day. However, there is an alternative to antihistamines guaranteed to make your body stronger to combat the symptoms of airborne allergens. The Alternative Solution The body is your defense mechanism. Giving it unnecessary medicine will weaken its defenses, meaning that the body will not be able to heal itself. When in actuality, the body's natural response is to defend itself when it encounters unfamiliar activity inside the body. To make your body stronger, you will have to stop taking antihistamines and contact a chiropractor. They can identify the reasons of why your body has not been able to defeat the allergens. Why You Need a Chiropractor? The chiropractor will explain to you that due to a misalignment in your neck, the allergens are not able to pass through your body as well as they should. Your brain conveys information to the spinal cord, which delivers it to the organs, which in this case are the nasal passages. Therefore, a twist in your neck creates confusion between the brain and spinal cord leading to nasal congestion. A chiropractor can restart the communication eliminating the static created by the airborne allergens. In return, your body will get stronger, healthier, and the production of histamines when you inhale allergens will stay under control, not overproducing or under producing them. Whom Should You Contact? Dr. Anthony DiNonno, a licensed chiropractor and head of the Monmouth Back and Neck Rehabilitation, in the city of Manalapan, New Jersey, is dedicated to relieving people of headaches, neck pain, and lower back pain. Dr. DiNonno and his staff aim to provide patients with optimal services using the latest chiropractic technology and equipment. Part 1: HOW TO stop your Dog Canine Beagle Scratching Itching Allergy Flaky Skin.

14:12
This is part one of a series. My dog Bailey (beagle) has skin problems or allergies and she itches like crazy and cant stop scratching. Its so bad, that the fur under her neck is almost all gone and there is very irritated skin. There is nothing I can do to stop it. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ This dog shampoo got almost 100% positive reviews: http://amzn.to/2fD5p1y ---- pH balanced for dogs. http://amzn.to/2iivELt --- Dog/cat shampoo for seborrheic dermatitis or DANDRUFF. (Excellent!) ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Its an ongoing problem that has lasted almost 5+ years. The vets have no solutions. They keep saying to try different foods, but I have tried 5 different foods with no luck. The only thing that seems to work temporarily is the steroid prednisone, which stops the itch almost instantly, but is only temporary. With prednisone they prescribe an anti-fungal and anti-microbial. But still, after a few weeks, the itch comes back and then the raw skin, etc. In this series, I am going to try and figure the problem out myself and report the progress back to you. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "JumpStart a Car With a Portable TINY Battery! It actually worked!" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGCxD1_Gmos -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-
