IELTS – The 5 Step Study Plan

22:48
If you're going to take IELTS, start here! Your success on the IELTS is based on more than just practicing English skills. In this video, I'll show you the key steps you need to take to reach your target band score. I'll talk about setting your objectives, building your studying plan, and studying for each section of the exam. Many students get a low score on the IELTS and keep making the same mistakes over and over again. Save your time and your money by avoiding their mistakes. Watch this video and get it right the first time. Take the quiz to make sure: http://www.engvid.com/ielts-the-5-step-study-plan/ For grammar and writing help, you can also visit my site: http://www.WriteToTop.com For many more free lessons on IELTS preparation you can visit: http://www.engvid.com/english-exams/ielts/ For a free complete guide to the IELTS, go to: http://www.GoodLuckIELTS.com TRANSCRIPT Hi. Welcome to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. Today we're going to look at an IELTS study plan, and as usual, when I look at IELTS, or TOEFL, or any of the tests, I'm going to speak a little bit faster so those of you taking the test can get a little bit more listening practice. And everybody else, this is very good practice for you as well to listen to slightly faster English. So we're going to look at IELTS. And for those of you who are just starting to prepare, starting to think about taking this test, maybe you want to go to university, maybe it's for immigration purposes, whatever, you're just starting out, you've just signed up for the test, now you need to start preparing for it. So here's a five-point study plan. And number one is the most important part because... And I'll tell you in a minute why. Know the test. Now, what does this mean? It means that you have to know exactly what you're about to face. I've met many test takers who've taken the test maybe several times, and the first two or three times they got a really low score because they still didn't really know what was coming. Right? They didn't understand how the test is structured, what the timing is like, all of these things. So, know the test, means: Know the structure. There are four sections; listening, reading, writing, speaking. Make sure you know how each of them works, how much time is going to be used for each one. In the listening section you have four sections, in the reading section you have three passages to read, in the writing sections you have... Section you have two tasks that you have to complete. In the speaking section you're going to be speaking with a native English speaker face to face, one on one for about 12 to 15 minutes. Make sure you know exactly what they're going to be asking you, what you're going to be expected to answer back. Okay? So know the structure of the test. Know the timing. You have 40 minutes, roughly, for the listening section, including a 10-minute time allotment for copying your answers from the question sheet to an answer sheet. This is very, very important. Know what to do that. If you're finished writing your answers on your answer sheet before the 10 minutes are up, you can't go to the reading section. You have to sit and wait, close your eyes, relax, etc. Make sure you know the question types that you're going to face in the listening, and the reading, and the writing of course, and the speaking. Knowing the question types will make sure that you aren't surprised by anything. Okay? You do not want to have surprises on test day. Know the question types, prepare for them, begin to think about how to answer them. Okay? Make sure you know all the directions. Every section of the test will have its own set of directions. Do not spend time reading these or listening to these during the test. You should know all of the directions long beforehand, you should memorize them. That way, you don't spend time reading them, you go straight to the task at hand. Okay? So know the test very well. Now, the best way to actually know the test is to practice taking the test. Practice the test. Now, I don't mean do, like, 10 minutes here, 10 minutes there, 15 minutes here. I want you to sit down at least once a week from the time you registered or started thinking about it until the actual test day. There are lots of places where you can get full practice tests. The Cambridge books are excellent for that. They are past papers and they're real tests. Make sure that you do a full test at least once a week from beginning to the end. Give yourself three full hours undistracted. Now, what does this mean? When you go to the official test centre you cannot take your phone in with you. You do not have internet, you do not have music, you do not have anything. You have you in a room with a bunch of other people.

Here's an example of the type of word problem you'll see when you take the HiSET. "Mrs. Patterson's classroom has sixteen empty chairs." Notice how they didn't actually put the number, they spelled it out, because they're hoping you'll miss that, read carefully. "All the chairs are occupied when every student is present. If two-fifths of the students are absent, how many students make up her entire class?" Okay so, here they gave us this ratio, or fraction that we can use. And it's two out of every five students are absent. So, you have two absent to five total. Using this ratio and this third piece of information, we can set up a proportion. We have sixteen empty chairs. They're empty because there are sixteen students absent. Make sure you are consistent when you set up proportions. So if you first ratio is two absent to five total, then your second ratio should be sixteen absent to, and here's what we don't know, how many total. Now, there's more than one way to solve a proportion. Sometimes, you'll get a proportion that lends itself, like this one does, to just figuring out a pattern. For instance, what do you do to two to get sixteen? Well you just multiply times eight. So, be consistent. Do the same thing to your denominator. Five times eight is forty. So, there are forty total students. Well that's not how you spell that word. Okay... um... but, not all proportions can be solved that way. All proportions can however, be solved with cross-products. So, let me show you how to do that. You just cross-multiply. Two times "x" is "2x", and the cross products of every proportion are equal, so that equals five times sixteen, which is eighty, and then you simply solve for "x". So, divide both sides by two, and you still get that "x" is forty, and that there are forty, total, students in the class. There is an example of a word problem using a proportion to solve. Good luck on the HiSET. If you're planning on taking the HiSET exam, then you need to be ready for word problems. Here is an example of the type of word problem you'll see when you take the HiSET exam. "Jamie had six dollars and fifty cents in his wallet when he left home. He spent four dollars and twenty-five cents on drinks and two dollars on a magazine. Later, his friend repaid him two dollars and fifty cents that he had borrowed the previous day. How much money does Jamie have in his wallet?" Well, he's starting with six dollars and fifty cents. Then he spent four dollars and twenty-five cents, which means we need to take away four dollars and twenty-five cents from the six dollars and fifty cents. So, we subtract. That's two dollars and twenty-five cents, and two dollars on a magazine. That's more money that he spent. So, we need to take away another two dollars, which leaves him with just twenty-five cents, but then his friend repaid him two dollars and fifty cents, which means we added to the amount of money that he has. So, we add two dollars and fifty cents, which gives him two dollars and seventy-five cents. So, you just have to look for those key words like spent and repaid to make sure that you're doing the right thing, either subtracting or adding, depending on what you're doing. There you have one example of the type of word problem you'll see when you take the HiSET exam.

Tips and Tricks for getting Top Scores in GRE-How to Prepare for GRE Test

07:59
The crux of GRE exam is practice, diligence and of course memory. Believe me the memory of yours will come handy as it has never had. You can opt for any two options in GRE. It can be general GRE where you will be sitting for two papers, Quantitative and Verbal Ability. The other is you can take subject GRE, where you can sit for an additional paper as well. GRE will help you get into the top 10 colleges (Stanford, Gatech, UMich, UIUC., etc.). Keeping a backup career option is important. Give your best to go to the U.S.A. Now coming to preparation, how long will it take? It really depends on your potential. 6 months is a decent time for preparation. Since GRE is round the year exam, you can take it anytime you feel like. There is a considerable amount that you have to pay to book your exam slot for GRE. Remember that you can postpone your date (incase you feel you are not prepared), in that case again you will have to rebook with the same amount. So please book your slot, only when you are confident of cracking it. Quantitative Ability: Do not aim at anything lesser than 800 in Quant. It is because, Quant is the section where you can max your score. Aim at 800 and get it. Believe me the Quant section is easier than anything else. Do barron tactics for 3 or 4 days. Do not prepare all day for Quant. The 30 minutes you prepare, concentrate well. That is enough. After doing barron tactics, solve bigbook - one section every day (it takes 30 minutes). Then correct it. Analyse your performance after some time. You have to do "some" Quant daily for about two months. Do the tests in a specified time of the day daily. Analyze it in a specified time of day. That is the kind of groove you need to get yourself into. In the meantime, document your results daily. You may take a two- or three-day break from Quant (merely reviewing the formulas briefly), and then repeat the exact same bigbook tests in the same order. This time see if you can solve a section in 2/3rds of the time allotted, i.e., in a maximum of 20 minutes. Solve more sections each day than before. Compare the new results with previous results you recorded. Are you making the same mistakes again, or new ones? Even on questions where you did not commit mistakes both times, see if you can find a faster, shorter way of solving the problems. If you repeat your mistakes, it means that you need to work on that type questions more. Learn new tactics for those. See what is the best tactic for a problem. Work systematically. This way, within 80 or 90 days. Now, go to the real tests. Take Kaplan CD, see what tactics he suggests, see if there is anything you did not know. Likewise do Princeton. And don't spend too much time on these. So spend more time on verbal. That does not mean "stop Quant". Review briefly every day. Verbal Ability Verbal ability is the most important section of the test and deserves considerable preparation. To put it in a single word, you should try and be the word "discipline" itself. Begin with "Norman Lewis". Develop a love for words. Enjoy words. Only then you can be successful with Verbal. Learn words to learn them understand them, then use them. Not for marks. If you begin to develop a love for words, it will ultimately fetch you not only marks, and also a sense of well being, of having been enriched and improved. So, begin with norman lewis. Do 1 section(or 2 at the most) everyday(It will take you 10 to 15 minutes per section). Do the tests given in it seriously. NOT frivolously. Meanwhile, begin to work with Barron. It is strictly not advisable to cramm 100’s odd unconnected words everyday. . It won't help. You will remember nothing. Look at its meaning as it is given in the dictionary Allot a definite time of the day each day. Learn not more than 30 words everyday. AWA The last section is an essay writing portion which comes with a difficult topic. So be young and original. Ask help from your teachers incase you are taking GRE classes elsewhere. Ultimately, I feel that as Indians we have got good command over English so we will be able to crack the same. After the exam GRE gives you a chance to apply for three universities free of cost. So please go through the best (for you) colleges and apply after the exam. As you apply to the colleges, along with your score, the universities see another thing, i.e the SOP (subject of purpose). A clearly thought out SOP, a well written (or typed) application stating why you need to be admitted by the school, great references and punctual submission of documents and follow up should ultimately fulfil your goal. ***Disclaimer: This is just a training video for fresher candidates.
