The story of the Third Wave experiment as told by the students and their teacher, Ron Jones Available on iTunes: https://geo.itunes.apple.com/gb/movie/lesson-plan/id1281607264?mt=6 Watch it on Amazon Video: http://a.co/9oWC239 Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/movies/details/Lesson_Plan?id=40IyT8xZIsc&hl=en_GB JMAN.tv: https://jman.tv/film/5634/Lesson+Plan A documentary about the 1967 Third Wave experiment in fascism that took place at Cubberley High School in Palo Alto, California. The charismatic teacher, Ron Jones, created a classroom setting wherein students subjugated personal freedom for the good of the community. Within one week, 30 students grew to 200. Taking on a life of its own, the Third Wave students unwittingly re-enacted the roots of the Third Reich. Replete with salutes and Gestapo-like informants, the experiment soon attracted scores of students throughout Cubberley as well as neighboring schools, spiraling the exercise not only out of Jones' control but the students' as well. Original students, Ron Jones, school administrators and Dr. Philip Zimbardo (creator of the Stanford Prison Experiment) have been interviewed for this film. What makes the film so unique is that the director was a member of the original Third Wave class. Empathy Can Change the World

02:24
This video was dreamed up, scripted, and acted out by some of my amazing 8th grade students from Kalispell Middle School. The vision was to create a thought provoking short film that instills a challenge to the viewer to look at their own life, their own relationships, and their own sphere of influence, and see where a little empathy could help change the world around them. In working in a middle school for the past 5 years, I've seen the power that a single act of empathy can have on a hurting student, and hope that this message will inspire viewers, just as my own students have inspired me in creating this. Please share in our vision for a more empathetic world. Song: Say Something Instrumental, A Great New World

Teaching art or teaching to think like an artist? | Cindy Foley | TEDxColumbus

14:40
What is the purpose and value of Art education in the 21st Century? Foley makes the case the Art’s critical value is to develop learners that think like Artists which means learners who are creative, curious, that seek questions, develop ideas, and play. For that to happen society will need to stop the pervasive, problematic and cliché messaging that implies that creativity is somehow defined as artistic skill. This shift in perception will give educators the courage to teach for creativity, by focusing on three critical habits that artist employ, 1. Comfort with Ambiguity, 2. Idea Generation, and 3. Transdisciplinary Research. This change can make way for Center’s for Creativity in our schools and museums where ideas are king and curiosity reigns. Cindy Meyers Foley is the Executive Assistant Director and Director of Learning and Experience at the Columbus Museum of Art. Foley worked to reimagine the CMA as a 21st century institution that is transformative, active, and participatory. An institution that impacts the health and growth of the community by cultivating, celebrating and championing creativity. Foley envisioned and led the charge to open the 18,000 sq. ft. Center for Creativity in 2011. In 2013, the museum received the National Medal for Museums in recognition of this work. Foley guest edited and wrote chapters for Intentionality and the Twenty-First-Century Museum, for the summer 2014 Journal of Museum Education. In 2012, Foley received the Greater Columbus Arts Council Community Arts Partnership award for Arts Educator. She was a keynote speaker for the OAEA (Ohio Art Education Association) 2012 Conference. She is on the Faculty of Harvard University’s Future of Learning Summer Institute. Foley is a graduate of the University of Kentucky and The Ohio State University. Prior to joining the Museum, she was with the Institute of Contemporary Art at the Maine College of Art, the Portland Museum of Art, and the Wexner Center for the Arts. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. Needs versus wants - GetWise | ASB

Teaching kids about money - Needs versus wants. Thanks to the ABS GetWise programme, we've helped over 400,000 Kiwi kids become cash clever. Watch more ASB money tips at http://asb.co/asbmoneytips or find out more on GetWise at https://www.asb.co.nz/getwise An important money skill to teach children is the difference between needs and wants. But for children that can be tricky. Put simply, a need is something you must have to survive, like food, water and a home. A want is something that's nice to have, but you can actually live without, like an ice cream or a new skateboard. Watch the other ASB GetWise videos for more fun ways to help your children learn about money. Lesson planning with Positive Choices: Engaging your students with evidence-based drug education

57:37
This webinar is part of the new Positive Choices webinar series, developed by CREMS researchers specifically for parents, teachers, school leaders, and anyone working with young people. This session will be particularly suitable for PDHPE teachers, but also relevant to principals, school counsellors or anyone working in a school community who would like information about online, evidence-based drug education and prevention. The webinar will introduce attendees to the Positive Choices drug education portal which houses a range of engaging learning resources that align with Australian Health and Physical Education curriculum requirements. The interactive session will provide an overview of what’s available in terms of school-based drug prevention, with a focus on evidence-based materials proven to improve student’s learning outcomes and wellbeing. Attendees will be shown how to use the portal to their advantage and will be provided with support in lesson planning and guidance about how to access and evaluate evidence-based resources that are engaging for young people. This webinar will lead to: 1. Awareness of the patterns of drug and alcohol use among young people and effective school-based prevention approaches; 2. Orientation to a range of resources with the potential to engage all students despite their individual learning styles and requirements; 3. Understanding of how to use the portal to plan lessons online according to Australian curriculum requirements. Evidence Base This webinar was developed by Dr Lexine Stapinski and Siobhan Lawler at the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Mental Health and Substance Use, National Drug & Alcohol Research Centre, UNSW and informed by review of the research evidence on this topic.
