Cruise Tips TV #6 Motion Sickness and How to Prevent it
Check out our latest video on this topic: https://youtu.be/e_YQO-l32Tk Tips about sea sickness (or motion sickness) and how to prevent or alleviate the symptoms. See our episode on wrist bands here: https://youtu.be/qI2MTZRvuBs Hi, I'm Sheri from CruiseTipsTV. Today we are going to talk about something that can absolutely ruin your cruise ... and we're going to give you a few tips about how to avoid it. Here's the scenario, you've subscribe to our channel, and watched all our tip videos, and ... Wait, you haven't subscribed? Well do it now then. I'll wait. Okay, so you've watched the videos and planned everything, but on your cruise you suddenly feel dizzy and nauseous, and it's getting worse. Yes, it's the most hated of hated, motion sickness. It can happen to anyone, but the common symptoms of nausea, vomiting and dizziness can generally be prevented and treated. And we've collected a few tips to help you do just that. These aren't in any specific order, and what works for you may not work for others. So, Pack and be prepared with a few options just in case. 1. We'll start with what I use occasionally - a wristband. This helps prevent symptoms from occurring. These wristbands are sold at drugstores under brand names like Sea-Band and BioBands, and they have a hard round button that gently presses against an acupressure point in your wrist, which is said to control nausea. 2. Perhaps the most common approach is over-the-counter medication containing dimenhydrinate or diphenhydramine. You'll see these marketed under several brand names, but look for those active ingredients. According to the Mayo Clinic, you should begin taking the medication half-hour to an hour before boarding. This give the medication time to work. Then continue taking it as directed by the usage instructions. 3. If you prefer a more natural approach, ginger root can be very effective. Many scientific (and not so scientific) studies have confirmed it. Our advice however, pack this (ginger candy) not this (ginger root). You can also try ginger tablets, capsules or cookies on your next cruise. It's best to start using this natural remedy at least 24 hours before you embark on your cruise. Most studies recommend ginger for mild cases, and it may not be effective in all instances. 4. The Mayo Clinic also suggests using a prescription scopolamine patch if you have experienced motion sickness in the past and haven't had success with over the counter medication. Apply the patch to the skin behind your ear. Replace it with a fresh patch every three days. Obviously it's best to discuss this with you doctor. 5. This one may not always make the most sense, but it could be effective in some circumstances. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, keeping your eyes on one fixed point reduces aggravating stimuli that can cause motion sickness symptoms. Taking a trip to the top deck on the ship and looking out at the horizon may help when you start to feel ill. Here are a couple more quick tips to remember. 1. Dehydration can make the symptoms worse, so drink plenty of water during the day. 2. Pick a cabin near the middle of the ship if you are prone to motion sickness. The motion of the ship is less noticeable in this area. The further you are away from the "motion of the ocean" the less motion you'll feel. So a midship cabin on a lower deck could be a good choice if you suffer from motion sickness. That's it for this episode. Be sure to check us out on twitter @CruiseTipsTV. Now get out there and cruise. If you like this video, please like and subscribe. And please, share our videos with fellow cruisers. We have more on the way. Until then, we'll see you on the high seas.

Don't stuff yourself with corn dogs and cotton candy and avoid acids like soft drinks and fruit juices. Instead, opt for lighter fare like a sandwich or a salad. Tip Tilting your head to the side can actually increase motion sickness. Instead, keep your head straight, close your eyes, and breathe deeply through your mouth. Step 2: Stay hydrated Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, especially on hot summer days. In addition to minimizing motion sickness, staying hydrated wards off heat stroke and dehydration. Tip Natural remedies to prevent motion sickness include ginger capsules and ginger ale, as well as pressure-point bracelets. Step 3: Rest up Rest for a few minutes after exiting an intense ride. Allow your body to adjust and regain its equilibrium. Sit on a bench and put your head between your legs if you still feel nauseous. Step 4: Ride in the front Ride in the coaster's first car. Riding in front minimizes your chances of motion sickness. Step 5: Take medication Take Dramamine, an over-the-counter motion sickness medication, about an hour before you arrive at the park. Is MOTION SICKNESS stopping you from traveling? Go ahead and watch this video where we will learn how to deal with motion sickness. #Motionsickness is a very common problem among people. It can be annoying for people who travel a lot and very upsetting for those trying to enjoy a joyful vacation. Motion sickness in common language is also known as car, sea or even plane sickness. This is an uncomfortable feeling in which the motion you sense in the inner part of the ear is totally different from what you actually perceive or visualize. Causes of motion sickness are listed below: 1. Mixed signals: Motion sickness is caused due the mixed signals that are sent out to the brain by the eyes and ears. 2. Worried about the attack: Motion sickness also takes place if you are getting worked up about it to happen. Watching others who are motion sick also triggers it. 3. How to Avoid Getting Sick on Amusement Park Rides
Watch more Summer Fun videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/13877-How-to-Avoid-Getting-Sick-on-Amusement-Park-Rides Enjoy those thrilling theme park rides without losing your lunch. Step 1: Take motion sickness medication Take an over-the-counter motion sickness medication, like Dramamine, at least an hour before you begin going on rides. But don’t take anything if you’re going to be behind the wheel, as these meds can cause drowsiness. Step 2: Take some ginger If you want a natural remedy, take a capsule or two of powdered ginger, available at health stores. Studies have shown ginger is effective in combating motion sickness. Step 3: Stay hydrated Sip water throughout the day. Being dehydrated increases your risk of ride-induced nausea and headaches. Step 4: Don’t stuff yourself Resist the urge to stuff yourself. Getting on a ride with a belly full of funnel cakes and corn dogs is just asking for it. Tip Enjoy whatever junk food you want by eating mini-meals throughout the day. Step 5: Sit in the front If you have a choice, always sit in the front of the ride. Your chances of getting nauseous are higher in the back. Step 6: Avoid multiple motion Avoid rides with multiple motions. Sitting in a cup that is twirling, tilting, rising, and descending—all while moving counterclockwise—is a recipe for disaster. Tip Rides with the highest barf factor are those that spin or rock back and forth, roller coasters with turns that are tight and frequent, and rides that often go upside down. Step 7: Try pressure point bracelets Try wearing pressure point bracelets; some people find them very effective. They’re available at drugstores. Did You Know? In 2003, an American man rode a roller coaster in an English amusement park for 401 hours, or more than 16 days.

Do Motion Sickness Wrist Straps Work?
Sea Bands: http://amzn.to/2sAaMUW Lewis N. Clark: http://amzn.to/2sFYBRz Relief Band: http://amzn.to/2tFSQaR This time we are going to take a look at these motion sickness relief wrist straps. Do they really help with sea sickness? We’ve done a previous episode (https://youtu.be/ppNAhhvGm5s) that covers these and other ways to deal with motion sickness. We’ll have a link to that in the description below. In this video we are just going to talk about the bands, and how they're supposed to work, and if they really help. All right, if you’ve not heard of these before here’s the scoop. These and similar wristbands or bracelets use an acupressure principle. There is a small stud on the band that applies constant pressure to something called “the P6 point” on your wrist. It’s on the inner part of your wrists … about right here. If you suffer from mild seasickness, these might be a good thing to try first. They do seem to work for me. Since I don’t really like using over the counter medicine like Dramamine, these are usually my first line of defense. They are really simple to use. I try to get them on about three fingers away from my wrist crease, and then kind of center the button here. What I like about these is they are simple, relatively inexpensive, and oh so stylish … don’t you think? Okay, so maybe not so stylish, but better than feeling queasy. The down side of these, at least for me, is they are really only effective for mild cases. There have been times on smaller ships, and in rougher seas where these just didn’t cut it. Here are my final thoughts. If you struggle with seasickness, these are worth considering as part of a larger strategy for dealing with it. Check out our older video on the topic for more information. If the problem is severe for you, see your doctor before you sail. There are a lot of options, so don’t risk ruining your cruise. We got these at the luxurious TJ-Maxx, but we’ll find something similar on Amazon and post a link on our website CruiseTipsTV.com

Tip A window can help put the rocking motion into perspective but can also worsen the feelings of nausea as more objects are moving. Step 5: Stare into the horizon Focus on the horizon and scenery rather than the water or the movement of the boat. If you feel queasy, stand; sitting or lying down can increase nausea. Step 6: Eat hard candy Suck on hard candy or eat dry crackers to help keep nausea in check. Did You Know? Did you know? Some people who take long cruises suffer "landsickness" for a few days after their trip as their body readjusts to being on firm ground.

Tips to Avoid Car Sickness: Car Expert Lauren Fix
You've got the car packed for your next road trip, your route is planned, but that sinking feeling sets in. A queasy stomach can affect any car passenger. Car sickness results from a conflict between the eye and ear: the inner ears detect that the car is moving, but the eyes, focused within the car, do not. The brain receives conflicting signals, and nausea results, per many pediatricians. Follow these tips to avoid car sickness: 1. Choose the Right Foods -- Before and during your road trip, eat bland foods. Avoid spicy, greasy foods and alcohol consumption. Don't eat foods that have caused stomach upset in the past. Bring along crackers, ginger candy, mints, soda water and ginger ale. 2. Keep your Eyes on the Scenery -- Reading books, watching movies and playing video games can all cause or worsen car sickness. Look outside the car instead, preferably out the front window. Find a focal point and keep your eyes on that. 3. Take Short Breaks -- Give your stomach a break by stopping the car, especially if you are feeling queasy. Walk around a bit and get some fresh air. 4. Call Shotgun -- Sitting in the front seat can reduce the conflicting signals of your brain. Looking forward is better than looking out the side window because the scenery seems to fly by quickly. *Do not put car seats in the front seat or change rear-facing seats to forward. 5. Use Medication -- Try over the counter medications such as Dramamine, Benadryl or Bonine. If all else fails, get a prescription from your doctor. Be prepared for a motion sickness reaction by buying lined disposable bags. These work at home as well. Your car and other passengers will thank you. Car sickness shouldn't prevent car rides and road trips. It may take time to find the right combination of tips to help you feel better. Start with short rides, see what works and work up to longer drives. Check with your doctor for proper medical advice -- my tips are suggestions and not a substitute. Over-the-Counter Drugs in Japan
This video goes over the types of over-the-counter drugs (and other drugstore items like condoms and birth control!) that are available in Japan, as well as their current price as of March 22, 2012, and their price converted to US dollars at the current exchange rate of $1 to ¥82.71. I apologize for any inconsistencies with the exchange rate--I edited this video over the course of a few days so the rate may have changed marginally throughout that time! As for the drugs that are illegal to bring: anything that contains more than 10% pseudoephedrine. To summarize wikipedia: Pseudoephedrine can be found in antihistamines, anti-mucus drugs, anti-cough drugs, pain relievers and NSAIDs (like aspirin or ibuprofen). Because pseudoephedrine can be used to make meth, many drug companies have begun producing products with reduced amounts or no pseudoephedrine, so not all of the above listed types of drugs will contain it. Just make sure you check before you bring any medicine to Japan! Vertigo Exercises - 4 Ways to Use Verified Home Remedies
Get this letter here: http://247remedies.com/heal-vertigo Vertigo Exercises - 4 Ways to Use Verified Home Remedies 1. Rest. Get some rest during and after attacks. Make sure you are resting as much as possible. While it is not always easy to achieve in our busy modern age, getting rest and relaxation can minimize the effects of vertigo. 2. Drink water. Vertigo or dizziness may be caused by dehydration as it decreases the blood volume and thereby the oxygen supply to your brain. In addition, the balance system in your inner ear uses fluids to transmit information about fluid levels in your body, which is in turn interpreted by the brain to produce a sense of balance. Rehydrating frequently, especially while exercising or suffering from diarrhea, can help minimize your dizziness. 3. Try ginger. Chinese sailors used ginger for centuries to combat motion sickness, and now it's widely used to fight dizziness. Ginger can be consumed in food, in your tea or you can even munch on it raw. 4. Try over-the-counter motion-sickness medication. Taking motion sickness medicine, such as meclizine or dimenhydrinate, which are available over-the-counter, can relieve dizziness. However, this should only be taken when absolutely necessary and not depended on. It's always better to address the problem instead of over-medicating it. Dr Behrang Keshavarz: Motion Sickness in Simulators - Causes & Countermeasures
At Research Rounds on January 30, Dr Behrang Keshavarz spoke on the topic of Motion Sickness in Simulators – Causes and Countermeasures. Over the last year, the market for virtual reality (VR) has exploded, selling millions of home-based VR kits. A conservative estimate has nearly 200,000 individuals having felt simulator sickness while experiencing VR. This problem is very relevant to TRI, with our emphasis on research through simulation of experience. DriverLab, outfitted with an actual Audi, will be used to assess at-risk drivers, determine the effect medication has on driving, tackle drowsy driving and roll out a customized driving license program. However, before the simulator can be put to optimal use, the potential for motion sickness has to be reduced – if not totally eliminated. The difference between real motion sickness (what we experience in cars / boats/ planes) and visually induced motion sickness (what is felt in the simulator) is that real motion is typically absent in the latter. However, both are thought to be caused by sensory conflict between visual and vestibular input (what we get and what we expect). Gender, age, ethnicity, visual field, postural sway and time lag are all factors that affect the severity of motion sickness. Medications used to mitigate real motion sickness cannot be used by participants in the driving simulator because side effects would influence the testing process. For example, we can’t test normal drowsy driving with drivers that have been sedated with over-the-counter anti-motion sickness drugs. Behrang has had success in reducing simulator sickness by increasing air flow, providing a pleasant ambience and by playing self-selected playlists of favourite music. These methods will be tested in DriverLab to alleviate simulator sickness and help keep our research participants focused on the simulated road.

Motion sickness: Interesting mechanism and solutions: https://www.facebook.com/avyact.agrawal.5

6 Amazing HEALTH BENEFITS of EATING GINGER! Stay Away DISEASES with INCREDIBLE Benefits of GINGER If you want to talk about superfoods, you need to know about ginger. Yes, that sometimes weird looking, smelly stump thing you see piled up in baskets at the market is actually an amazing addition to your healthy living plan. This exotic food is spicy, but not hot, and fragrant without tasting like floral perfume. This all around wonder spice was once viewed by Chinese and Indian healers as a gift from the gods. So if you only know ginger as wasabi’s best friend, accompanying your sushi boat, you don’t know what you’re missing. Today I want to share some amazing health benefits of ginger with you, and I hope they may inspire you to give this weird little rhizome a chance. But first, what the heck is that dirty root thing anyway? What is Ginger? Ginger originated in southern parts of China before it was traded throughout Asia, India, Africa, the Middle East, and the Caribbean. This is why you’ll typically find recipes using ginger in these spice loving cuisines. The ginger we all eat doesn’t come from the root of the plant, but actually the rhizome, which is part of the stem that grows horizontally underground. Ginger is sometimes called ‘ginger root’ only because it grows underground, but roots actually grow vertically. This is why ginger sometimes looks like it was just uprooted from the dirt. Ginger roots have thin or thick skins, depending on their level of maturity when they were harvested. You should check these out when you buy your ginger to make sure they look healthy and mold-free, and peel the skin off before you use it. Young ginger roots are very juicy, yet mild. You can enjoy young ginger pickled (like when you eat sushi) or steep it in tea to make ginger tea. However, mature ginger roots are fibrous and dry; they make excellent candidates for fresh grated ginger, used as a spice to zest your best dishes and stir-frys. When the grated ginger is powder dry, you can use it in recipes like gingerbread cookies. So now that you know what ginger is, how about we get right into what makes it a superfood? The most widely known fact about ginger is that it’s a great natural remedy to combat nausea. Ginger May Reduce Nausea and Morning Sickness Ginger has long been touted for its effect on unhappy tummies. From motion sickness to morning sickness, you’ll likely find a ginger remedy online to help. When pregnant women have to deal with morning sickness, which can happen at any point in the day and not just in the AM, they have to fight off nausea and vomiting. Yuck! One study on this sweet smelling rhizome proved that taking ginger reduced the symptoms of nausea, but didn’t reduce the number of daily puke sessions. As tempting as that must sound to all you pregnant ladies, definitely speak with your doctor about adding ginger to your diet before you attempt this one. If you can’t fly by plane or step foot on a boat without your motion sickness pills, ginger may be just what you’re looking for. A study on seasickness tested 80 naval cadets who weren’t used to sailing in heavy seas. They gave the participants an anti-nausea medicine, a placebo, or ginger root, and checked on their levels of seasickness every four hours. Researchers not only discovered that “fewer symptoms of nausea and vertigo were reported after ginger root ingestion”, but “ginger root reduced the tendency to vomiting and cold sweating significantly better than [the] placebo did”. Further to this, an overall review of six separate studies aimed at discovering if ginger was as powerful as over-the-counter anti-nausea medicine, discovered that taking ginger was “superior to [taking a] placebo and equally effective” as the OTC remedy. That’s pretty awesome. You know I love it when natural foods work just as well as factory created pills that have unpleasant side effects. Ginger May Reduce Inflammation Ginger’s in the same family as turmeric, a spice thought to have anti-inflammatory benefits, so it’s no wonder that ginger shares the same ability. When you start losing cartilage between your joints due to arthritis or osteoarthritis, the bone-on-bone rubbing that occurs during walking just a few steps can seem unbearable. Many people suffering with arthritis feel trapped when they can’t move due to the unbearable pain and stiffness in their joints. Before going through surgery, many people turn to pain relieving drugs just to cope with daily life. A trial of patients with osteoarthritis of the knee received ginger extracts twice a day for six weeks in place of their pain medication. They were allowed to use acetaminophen as a “rescue medication” if they were in dire pain. The great news is that researchers noticed that when patients took the ginger extract, they experienced a reduction in knee pain when standing and walking. Patients relied less on the acetaminophen when consuming the ginger

Vegetables, fruits, spices and herbs have been traditionally used to treat health conditions. They were the earliest form of medication. While most people rely on modern medication for most of their illnesses, many are now trying natural home remedies, as they have been proven more beneficial. Over the counter medicines can cause very bad side effects when used for a long time; this can be avoided using natural home remedies. Causes: Pregnancy Over-eating Excessive intake of fat foods Obesity Alcoholic drinks Caffeine Smoking Hernia Stress Symptoms Bloating Burning sensation in the chest Nausea Burping Vomiting or bloody stools Hiccups Loss of weight Dysphagia or narrow oesophagus Sore throat or dry cough Following are five remedies that you can try at home: 1.Chewing Gum: Chewing gums accelerate the flow of saliva, which in turn washes out all the extra acid that accumulates in the stomach and offers great relief. 2.Aloe Vera: The Aloe Vera juice is excellent for soothing upset stomach, drinking it can help in getting rid of unwanted stomach acids. It also reduces inflammation in the oesophagus. Drinking half a cup of Aloe Vera juice before meals is recommended. 3.Baking Soda: Adding half a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water and drinking it offers instant relief. This must not be done regularly, as baking soda is high on salt. 4.Carrot Juice: Drinking a cup of carrot juice also offers quick relief. Airsickness: "Motion Sickness in Aviation" (Physiology of Flight No 10c) ~1990 FAA Pilot Training
Pilot Training Films playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLCA6387BA013F9A4D more at: http://scitech.quickfound.net/aviation_news_and_search.html Airsickness, and how it affects aircraft pilots. "Physiology of Flight: Motion Sickness in Aviation" Federal Aviation Administration pilot training film from the Civil Aerospace Medical Institute. Public domain film from the US National Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and one-pass brightness-contrast-color correction & mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airsickness Airsickness is a sensation which is induced by air travel. It is a specific form of motion sickness, and is considered a normal response in healthy individuals. Airsickness occurs when the central nervous system receives conflicting messages from the body (including the inner ear, eyes and muscles) affecting balance and equilibrium. The inner ear is particularly important in the maintenance of balance and equilibrium because it contains sensors for both angular (rotational) and linear motion. Airsickness is usually a combination of spatial disorientation, nausea and vomiting... Symptoms Common symptoms of airsickness include: Nausea, vomiting, vertigo, loss of appetite, cold sweating, skin pallor, difficulty concentrating, confusion, drowsiness, headache, and increased fatigue. Severe airsickness may cause a person to become completely incapacitated. Susceptibility The following factors increase some people's susceptibility to airsickness: - Fatigue, stress, and anxiety, are some factors that can increase susceptibility to motion sickness of any type. - The use of alcohol, drugs, and medications may also contribute to airsickness. - Additionally, airsickness is more common in women (especially during menstruation or pregnancy), young children, and individuals prone to other types of motion sickness. - Although airsickness is uncommon among experienced pilots, it does occur with some frequency in student pilots. Treatment Medication Medications that may alleviate the symptoms of airsickness include: - meclozine (Antivert, Bonine) - dimenhydrinate (Dramamine) - diphenhydramine (Benadryl) - scopolamine (available in both patch and oral form). Pilots who are susceptible to airsickness should not take anti-motion sickness medications (prescription or over-the-counter). These medications can make one drowsy or affect brain functions in other ways. Non-pharmacologic remedies A method to increase pilot resistance to airsickness consists of repetitive exposure to the flying conditions that initially resulted in airsickness. In other words, repeated exposure to the flight environment decreases an individual’s susceptibility to subsequent airsickness. Recently, several devices have been introduced that are intended to reduce motion sickness through stimulation of various body parts (usually the wrist). Natural remedies There are numerous alternative remedies for motion sickness. One such is ginger, but it is ineffective.

Morning Sickness Relief
Morning sickness is nausea that occurs during pregnancy. The name is misleading since morning sickness can strike at any time of the day or night. It’s most common during the first trimester. “It’s really considered a normal part of pregnancy - happens in about 70-90% of women. Where they just basically have nausea and/or vomiting,” says Tammy Luettich, a certified nurse midwife with Lee Memorial Health System. Treatment isn't necessary for most cases of morning sickness, but if your symptoms persist, your doctor may recommend a combination of vitamin supplements and medications to relieve the nausea. “It’s simply vitamin B6 and an over-the-counter antihistamine called doxalamine,” says Luettich. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recently declared that the B6-antihistimine combo should be considered for first line use. It’s proven safe for women and their unborn babies and can be sold separately over the counter or together in a single prescription pill. “It’s in a time-released fashion, so instead of just buying it over the counter and taking it yourself, with the time-released fashion women have a little less of the sedated affect from the antihistamine,” says Luettich. Moms-to-be should contact their doctor if they experience excessive nausea and vomiting that prevents them from keeping any food down, if their vomiting is accompanied by pain or fever or if it persists well into the second trimester. Seasickness - Cruise Tip 98
In another episode of 60-Second Cruise Tips, Gary Bembridge, author of "The Cruise Traveler's Handbook", "Essential Cruise Tips" and "River Cruising Essential Tips and Tricks" shares another cruise tip. This time it is: Seasickness Seasickness is unpleasant and cruise lines do everything they can to reduce the probability of you suffering from it. Steps they take include scheduling and sailing itineraries that minimise the chance of encountering rough seas, using ships equipped with stabilisers to help keep the ship steady in rough seas and swells and taking advantage of modern radar systems to avoid poor weather. If you are concerned or prone to seasickness there are a number of steps you can take such as traveling in a cabin in the middle of the ship and low down as movement is least here and take over-the-counter motion sickness pills like dimenhydrinate (marketed as Dramamine, Gravol, etc.) in North America and cinnarazine (marketed as Stugeron or Stunarone) in Europe. You must buy them before you go. They may make you drowsy for a few hours, but resolve the problem. If you do not want to use medication here are some other tips: Try the pressure pads behind the ears or wrist bands. Both are available at drugstores and pharmacies. Eat ginger. Look at the horizon and get fresh air. Go on a river cruise as you will not suffer from motion sickness. If none of the above work, visit the medical centre as they will offer an injection which will make you sleep usually but will solve the problem fast.Do not let the fear of sickness put you off a cruise!   Subscribe to the podcast on iTunes or Stitcher Radio

Motion sickness occurs when the body’s organs send conflicting signals that the brain cannot interpret properly. Common symptoms of motion sickness are nausea, pale skin, sweating, vomiting, dizziness, headache, increased salivation and fatigue. The symptoms usually disappear after the motion stops. There are many over-the-counter medicines and acupuncture therapies to help you deal with the situation. But those solutions are not always convenient or cheap. Thanks to the spice trade, the tradition caught on in Europe. As one sixteenth-century physician put it: 'Ginger does well for a dangerous stomach.' In The Family Herbal from 1814, English physician Robert Thornton noted that 'two or three cupfuls for breakfast' will relieve 'dyspepsia due to hard drinking.' Modern research later confirmed that ginger reduces nausea and vomiting from multiple causes: morning sickness, postoperative destruction, chemotherapy operations, and motion illness. The studies on whether or not ginger stops motion sickness are mixed. One study found ginger to be as efficient, with fewer side effects, as dimenhydrinate (Dramamine). We never plan to get sick, but sometimes it happens. In this lesson, you'll learn vocabulary and expressions you need to visit a doctor, get a prescription, and buy the medicine you need. If you're traveling to an English-speaking country, this lesson is essential. I'll also give you my advice and warnings for buying and taking medication in an English-speaking country. Most importantly, remember that pharmacists are your friends. They will be happy to help you find the medication you need, and to give you exact instructions on how to take it. I hope your next visit to the drug store is a pleasant one. Don't worry, this lesson is non-drowsy! Test your understanding of the lesson with my quiz: http://www.engvid.com/travel-english-getting-sick-and-buying-medicine/ TRANSCRIPT E, you're going to need some medicine. Take your medicine. Dunh-dunh-dunh. Hi. James from engVid. Today's lesson is going to be on getting medicine, going to the pharmacy, and who you should see to get these things. Okay, look, you're learning English, and if you're really lucky, you're going to get to travel to different places, English-speaking places, and when you go there, it's not always going to be perfect. I'm hoping most of the time you have a great time, meet interesting people, but you might get sick or feel bad, and when you do, you're going to need someone to help you. And what I'd like to do is help you with today's lesson, and where we're going to talk about how we ack-... Not acknowledge, but we tell someone what's wrong with us, and how they help us get better. Are you ready? Let's go to the board. So, first: "symptoms". It's a nice, long word. What are your symptoms? "Symptoms" are the things that you feel when you don't feel well. If you say: "My back hurts", or "My head hurts", or "My stomach doesn't feel good", what we are saying is these are your symptoms. When you have a cold, you have a runny nose, your nose is runny-right?-sometimes-[coughs]-you cough, sometimes you have this - well, that would be a fever. If that's the symptoms, I'd say you have a flu; not a cold. All right? Okay. So when you see a doctor, and that's who you go to, you go to a doctor, they'll ask you: "What are your symptoms?" And you say: "Doctor, my arm hurts and my back hurts." He'll go: "Okay. You know what? I think you have blah, blah, blah, and you need some medicine." So once you tell them the symptoms, if the doctor feels this is something you won't get better in, you know, two or three days, like: "You're tired, get some sleep, or eat some food", the doctor will tell you to get some medicine. Now, in North America, which is Canada, United States, and Mexico - they have great... Well, we won't say Mexico, because English speaking, Canada, United States, Great Britain, Australia, you cannot get medicine just because you want it. You actually have to go to a special place, and you have to get what's called a prescription. A prescription actually... The word is "prescription", but we say "perscription". The prescription is the doctor saying what medicine you need. Remember we said medicine? And he signs or she will sign it, and say: "Please give this person that medicine." In this case, I said "he" because Mr. E, if you didn't know it, he's a doctor. He is a doctor, bona fide. Anyway, Mr. E will sign a piece of paper and give it to you. You will then go to a place called "the pharmacy". The pharmacy is where we actually get medicine. Sometimes they actually make some of the medicines, or put them together there for you. Another word for "pharmacy" is "drug store". A lot of times, Canadians and Americans will go: "I'm going to the drug store to get something", because they don't just sell medicine and drugs-and "drugs" is another word for "medicine"-they sell other things you might need, you know, tooth paste, floss for your teeth, and we have a video on that if you really want to go check-okay?-on how to take care of yourself. But you go to the drug store or the pharmacy to get your medicine. When you go there and you hand it, you're going to hand the piece of paper to the person called "the pharmacist". The pharmacist is the doctor that deals with giving out medicines. They will ask you for your prescription. When you hand them the prescription, they will-here we have number 5-fill your prescription. "Fill it", think of a bath tub, or yeah, a glass of water - it's empty, but as you put the water in, it fills up. Filling the prescription means putting the medicine inside of the bottle for you to take. The pharmacist will fill your prescription.
