Conversations on National Security and U.S. Naval Power: Rep. Joe Courtney and Seth Cropsey

58:25
On July 18, Rep. Joe Courtney, ranking member of the Seapower and Projection of Forces Subcommittee of the House Armed Services Committee, and Hudson Institute Senior Fellow Seth Cropsey, held a discussion on the future of the U.S. Navy and its role in American defense and foreign policy. For over a century, American military strategy has relied on control of the seas through its Navy. Today, the United States faces challenges from near-peer competitors Russia and China, and other regional challenges. But while threats have increased, the U.S. fleet size has contracted. To address this, the U.S. Navy recently set an ambitious, decades-long plan to increase the fleet to 355 ships. But can this growth in fleet size be achieved? What will the fleet of the future look like, and can its force structure be maintained? How will America continue to employ the Navy as a strategic tool to maintain the U.S.-led international order? A highly regarded voice on national security, Rep. Courtney was first elected in 2006 to serve Connecticut’s 2nd congressional district, home to Naval Submarine Base New London. A member of the Armed Services Committee, Rep. Courtney also serves as co-chair of the Congressional Shipbuilding Caucus with his Republican colleague Rep. Rob Wittman of Virginia. Sponsored by Hudson’s Center for American Seapower, Conversations on National Security and U.S. Naval Power is an ongoing series that brings influential policymakers and opinion leaders to Hudson to foster constructive dialogue toward the shared goal of ensuring the U.S. Navy’s global preeminence.

Power Wars: How Obama Continued Bush's National Security State After Campaigning Against It

14:15
Democracynow.org - With just over a year left in office, President Obama is running out of time to fulfill his longstanding promise to close the U.S. military prison at Guantánamo Bay. The imprisonment of foreigners at Guantánamo is one of several Bush-era policies that continue under Obama’s presidency. While Obama has shut down the CIA’s secret prisons and banned the harshest of Bush’s torture methods, many others—the drone war, presidential secrecy, jailing whistleblowers and mass surveillance—either continue or have even grown. The story of the Obama administration’s counterterrorism legacy is told in the new book, "Power Wars: Inside Obama’s Post-9/11 Presidency," by Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times correspondent Charlie Savage. Obama's Brown-shirts Are Coming - Gestapo - SS - Civilian National Security Force

00:21
Do not get sucked up into this euphoria that has over come our nation. But you must be warned about the potential danger that lies ahead when so many believe so deeply that their cause is the only way forward and that those who refuse to take part are in some way obstacles to the fulfillment of what must be, of what will be. And I'm not talking about Republicans and Conservatives, I'm talking about you moderate Reagan Democrats, you will be assimilated, or purged from your Party like the waste water from a recreational vehicle. The solution for us hard core conservative capitalists will come much later. Most likely we will just be marginalized and no final solution will be necessary. That is most likely going to be the future of this country, but I could be wrong. -ExcellentAmerican Obama's Civilian National Security Force Posted by Alberto de la Cruz at November 2, 2008 07:35 AM If elected, Barack Obama has promised to form a Civilian National Security Force that is just as powerful and just as well funded as our National Military. I have to wonder just what Obama hopes to accomplish by forming such a force when we already have millions of expertly trained law enforcement personnel both on the national level as well as the state, county, and municipality level. I am curious to know Obama's plans for this CNSF and just what they will be protecting us from that the FBI, the DEA, ICE, the Secret Service, the Border Patrol, the DOJ, the state police in every state in the union, the local police in almost every county and city in the union, and the many more law enforcement agencies I am sure I am missing from this list cannot protect us from. Apparently, it is something very sinister and something very dangerous because with the millions upon millions of law enforcement officers we have in this country, Obama feels we need another security force that is as powerful as the US military. This idea of a Civilian National Security Force that Obama is peddling, however, is not a new concept, nor is it a novel one. It has been around for a long time. As a matter of fact, one only needs to look 90-miles to the south of our border to find another country that instituted a civilian security force that has been operating--quite effectively, I might add--for almost five decades now. Again, call me crazy, or call me an intransigent, right-wing Cuban from Miami. But as I said yesterday in a previous post: If it walks like a duck, if it quacks like a duck, then it must be a duck. http://www.babalublog.com/archives/010386.html Senator Obama was nearly 17 minutes into his July 2 speech (yet another one where naming Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was required) in Colorado Springs, Colorado when he deviated from his pre-released script and performed without the teleprompter net saying, "We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded." http://www.americanthinker.com/2008/07/obamas_civilian_national_secur.html

It's also clear that we're not as prepared as we should be, as a government or as a country. In recent years, some progress has been made at the federal level. Wide of people at ATM machine STORYLINE: The United States has for too long failed to adequately protect the security of its computer networks, US President Barack Obama said on Friday, announcing he will name a new cyber czar to take on the job. Surrounded by a host of government officials, aides and corporate executives, Obama said the threat to cyber security was "one of the most serious economic and national security challenges" the country faced. Obama said he would soon pick the person to fill the post for the new White House office of cyber security, and that person will report to the National Security Council as well as to the National Economic Council, in a nod to the importance of computers to the economy. While the newly interconnected world offers great promise, Obama said it also presents significant peril as well. Laying out a broad five-point plan, the president said the US needed to provide the education required to keep pace with technology and attract and retain a cyber-savvy work force. Cyber security expert James Lewis, of the Centre for Strategic and International Studies, underlined the urgency of tackling the issue. President Barack Obama has authorised sending weapons to Syrian rebels for the first time, according to US Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes. Read more... The announcement came after the White House disclosed that the United States has conclusive evidence that President Bashar al-Assad's government used chemical weapons against opposition forces trying to overthrow him. Obama has repeatedly said that the use of chemical weapons would cross a "red line," suggesting that it would trigger greater US intervention in the two-year crisis that has killed 93,000 people. "Our intelligence community assesses that the Assad regime has used chemical weapons, including the nerve agent Sarin, on a small scale against the opposition, multiple times in the last year," said Mr Rhodes. "The President has made a decision to provide additional types of support to the SMC (Supreme Military Council), which I cannot inventory for you, but which will be aimed at strengthening the effectiveness of the SMC on the ground," he added. The US has so far provided the Syrian rebels with rations and medical supplies, but officials said that the Obama administration could now supply the rebels with a range of weapons, including small arms, ammunition, assault rifles and a variety of anti-tank weaponry. Civilian National Security Force

We know ALL ABOUT Palin's desire to have Trooper Wooten fired, okay? We know NOTHING (from the leftist press) about OBAMA'S MARXIST PLANS for OUR country: "Universal Voluntary Public Service" which NOW, according to Obama's Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel, is to be mandatory. Wait! There's MORE! Obama says we need a (direct quote) "civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded" as the US military (on which we currently spend $700 BILLION). But Barnie Frank has been overheard saying we will CUT military spending to $500 billion? So we can create ...what? A Tax-payer funded army of Obama Brown Shirts? What the HELL is going on!? 1.) updated 2:16 a.m. CT, Tues., Nov. 11, 2008 WASHINGTON - A Republican congressman from Georgia said Monday he fears that President-elect Obama will establish a Gestapo-like security force to impose a Marxist dictatorship. "It may sound a bit crazy and off base, but the thing is, he's the one who proposed this national security force," Rep. Paul Broun said of Obama in an interview Monday with The Associated Press. "I'm just trying to bring attention to the fact that we may — may not, I hope not — but we may have a problem with that type of philosophy of radical socialism or Marxism." Broun cited a July speech by Obama that has circulated on the Internet in which the then-Democratic presidential candidate called for a civilian force to take some of the national security burden off the military. "That's exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it's exactly what the Soviet Union did," Broun said. "When he's proposing to have a national security force that's answering to him, that is as strong as the U.S. military, he's showing me signs of being Marxist." Obama's comments about a national security force came during a speech in Colorado in which he called for expanding the nation's foreign service. "We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set," Obama said in July. "We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded." 2.) Public Allies is a Chicago organization of tax payer funded protesters. Barack Obama founded Public Allies in Chicago in 1992, and Michelle Obama became the executive director. The group uses tax payer dollars to pay people who sign up. The Public Allies paid members spend most of their time protesting. Public Allies teaches the young adults that work for them that America is a racist, oppressive place in need of "social change." Public Allies said in a tax filing: "Our alumni are more than twice as likely as 18-34 year olds to engage in protest activities." http://www.ibdeditorials.com/IBDArticles.aspx?id=305420655186700

We talked about some of the broader, global risks that may arise, and the kind of planning and coordination that's going to be required between our military and our civilian forces in order to accomplish our long term national security objectives. We also talked about making sure that the health of our force is always in our sights, and I know that all the chiefs that are represented here, as well as Secretary Gates, are constantly thinking about what we need to do to make sure people who are in uniform for the United States are getting the kinds of support they need and that their families are getting the support they need, and that's something that I'm absolutely committed to, and I know Vice President Biden is as well. We are going to have some difficult decisions that we're going to have to make surrounding Iraq, and Afghanistan, most immediately. Obviously our efforts to continue to go after extremist organisations that would do harm to the homeland is uppermost on our minds. I have every confidence that our military is going to do their job and I intend to make sure that the civilian side of the ledger does its job to support what they are doing. We have, for a long time, put enormous pressure on our military to carry out a whole set of missions, sometimes not with the sort of strategic support and the use of all aspects of American power to make sure that they are not carrying the full load." 6. Various of Obama shaking hands with servicemen and women STORYLINE: Emerging from his first Pentagon briefing as president, Barack Obama said on Wednesday his administration faced "difficult decisions" about Iraq and Afghanistan. But the new commander in chief offered no new details about his decisions on the wars in both countries. The president spoke briefly with reporters on Wednesday after a two hour session with military advisers. Obama said the US military had carried out its missions under enormous pressure, and pledged his support for the troops. "Obviously our efforts to continue to go after extremist organisations that would do harm to the homeland is uppermost on our minds," Obama said at the US Defence Department's headquarters, accompanied by Vice President Joe Biden. He did not answer a reporter's question about withdrawal from Iraq. At the briefing, Obama heard the opinions of four military service chiefs in a next step toward fulfilling his promise to withdraw all American combat troops from Iraq within 16 months. The chiefs are among those in the Defence Department hierarchy who have expressed misgivings about the impact that long, repeated war tours in Iraq and Afghanistan have had on the US military. The chairman and vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the president's senior uniformed military advisers, and Defence Secretary Robert Gates attended the briefing. Earlier, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said the president was likely to wrap up his review on Iraq war strategy relatively soon. Defence officials have said they can meet Obama's campaign pledge, but several have indicated that a fast withdrawal could upset the fragile security now in Iraq. The Pentagon is nearing an announcement of new troop deployments in Afghanistan, with forces arriving in numbers in the spring and summer.
