When you consider how many people choke on food every day, you might begin to think that all foods are incredibly dangerous. However, today’s list reveals the worst of the worst. The foods that you’d have to really trust the chef before you consume them or you’d need to be a risk taker before swallowing.

12 - This is nuts
Raw cashews look as innocent as you’d expect from a small nut, but as they say – dynamite comes in small packages. Raw cashews contain urushiol, and in large doses this could be fatal. Even the raw cashews you buy in the store are not 100% raw, but have been steamed to clean them of that risky chemical.
11 - Healthy Appetite
Bean sprouts have made their way into our soups, salads, stews and stir fries but did you know they’re a haven for things like E.coli, salmonella and listeria. It’s believed that bean sprouts were responsible for an outbreak of E-Coli in Germany that claimed the lives of 22 people, whilst hundred more were very, very ill.
10 - Bottom of the food chain
You’ll be there if you have a bad experience with Echizen Kurage, which is generally eaten in Japan – where else, of course! This delicacy can be eaten either cooked or raw BUT always ensure you eat it in a reputable establishment, because if this jellyfish isn’t cleaned properly, there are toxic parts that can make you exceptionally sick.
9 - No super food
Elderberries are considered quite the superfood and are packed with antioxidants, and as wonderful as they genuinely are, they do have a dark side. If you accidentally ingest the leaves, twigs or seeds, you will get severe nausea, headaches and other forms of sickness. Leave the berry picking to the experts.
8 - Got Milk?
The milk we drink on a daily basis is all pasteurized, which happens when the milk is heated to a high temperature and then rapidly cooled down. There are people who prefer raw milk and use it to make cheese and of course to drink. This can be very dangerous, as raw milk is a breeding ground for salmonella, E. coli and listeria. Perhaps one of the rare situations where store bought is better than 100% natural?
7 - Something Fishy
Over in Egypt, a lot of Fesikh is eaten over the spring festival. It’s fish that is dried in the sun and then fermented in salt for 12-months. Apparently, 4 people fell victim to fesikh poisoning in 2010 and this happens yearly. Health officials have asked citizens to skip this dish, which leads to botulism, where your muscles become paralyzed and chances of recovery are very slim.
6 - Beware the bagel
Bagels aren’t dangerous, right? Wrong! Cutting a bagel is considered pretty dangerous, and more people cut themselves whilst attempting to slice a bagel than anything else in the kitchen! In 2011, 2,000 Americans landed up in ER with bagel-related injuries!
5 - Death by fruit
You’re aware that the Durian fruit is said to stink like nothing you’ve ever smelt before, however people have also lost their lives to this crazy fruit. A couple who were traveling through Asia compiled a list of people who came to an early demise because of Durian, although some incidents occurred when the fruit fell on their heads, so I don’t think that counts. However, one 60-year old businessman ate too many of them, and he didn’t pull through. He had hypertension, diabetes and suffered from a heart attack.
4 - Star Struck
Star Fruit is available worldwide, and although thousands eat this fruit every day – the juice can be very dangerous for anyone struggling with kidney problems. The juice contains neurotoxins which can affect the brain and nerves, and those with unhealthy kidneys are unable to filter out those dangerous neurotoxins.
3 - Full of beans
Hopefully they’re cooked though, because red kidney beans – despite not tasting great raw – also contain a toxic agent called phytohaemagglutnin. Just a handful of raw beans could mean vomiting and severe headaches for you. Of course, cook them up and you’ll be able to actually enjoy their wonderful flavor.
2 - The real Batman
Bat soup is consumed in many different countries, including Vietnam, Indonesia, Guam and Thailand. This particular bat is definitely not the most attractive one, and might put you off your food…. but I promise there are cuter bats that will make their into your bat soup, making it easier eat. Eating fruit bats has been directly linked to a fatal neurodegenerative disorder. Bats eat huge quantities of cycad seeds which form fatal toxins in the bats skin. So eat with caution!
1 - Fish Tales
Here’s another delicacy from the ocean, and heads up, it’s cousin to the very poisonous puffer fish. The skin, liver and reproductive organs of this Blaasop are all fatally poisonous. Chefs have to be ultra-careful when preparing this fish. At least 10 people have succumbed to the fish, and departed shortly after eating their dinner. Best to stick to eating fish fingers!
