A growing number of organizations are giving greater scrutiny to their Workers Compensation costs, particularly in today’s challenging economy. Businesses are paying more in premiums while their payrolls have diminished or remained flat, and they’re looking for ways to reduce costs and save money. In fact, employers say that cost containment is their number-one Workers Compensation concern followed by increasing exposures, renewals, and rising fraud behaviors. What’s more, many companies are finding it increasingly more difficult to secure a Workers Comp program that works for them, with agents and brokers struggling to find markets and alternative solutions. That’s where Hartan comes in. We partner with several carriers and offer a number of Workers Compensation plans to address your individual client’s needs, including online programs that provide quick quote turnaround with low minimum premiums for many classes of business. We also have various Workers Comp rating plans: Guaranteed Cost – the most common plan in which premiums are based on payroll, specific classification codes and premium rates per $100 of payroll. The insured pays a standard amount of premium even if losses exceed that amount. It allows for budgeting and is easy to administer and, if your client has a low experience modification factor, it will mean lower premiums. Large Deductible – growing in popularity for larger employers, the deductible is the amount of risk the insured is responsible for before the insurer will pay for claims, up to the policy limits and/or state statutory benefit level. Large deductible programs are individually designed and filed by insurers. Some of the benefits include a significant cash flow advantage over most other fully insured or alternative risk programs, increased market availability, and incentive for implementing loss control programs and return to work programs, among others. Other loss sensitive programs, including incurred loss retro, paid losses retro, and prefunded deductible plans. As Workers Compensation takes a lead as a significant cost driver for employees throughout the country, we can help you explore loss-sensitive options combined with integrated risk control, claims and managed care services. In addition, we can offer “pay as you go” programs with many of our carriers. Optimize your client’s workers compensation program with Hartan. What are workers compensation class codes? | Class Codes

06:31
What are workers compensation class codes? This video explains the following: 1.)What are workers compensation class codes? Workers’ compensation class codes are codes that the insurance companies use to identify specific categories of work. For instance, you may know the job duties of a contractor by their job title. However, the insurance company knows them as “5606”. 2.) What is workers’ compensation insurance? Workers' compensation is a form of insurance that provides compensation to employees who suffer job-related injuries and illnesses. In exchange for the possession of workers’ compensation insurance, the state offers a legal surrender of the employee's right to sue his or her employer for the tort of negligence. 3.) Why do insurance companies use workers’ compensation class codes? Insurance companies need to be able to categorize various types of work into “class codes” to determine workers compensation rates, coverages, and exclusions. For example, a 5606  (Contractor) will have a more expensive workers’ compensation rate than an 8810 (Clerical) employee, because more dangerous work is being performed. 4.) How is workers’ compensation insurance charged? Insurance companies assign a unique rate to each client based on the applicable class code, the experience and loss history of the business, amount of employees and payroll, and other factors. The rate is charged as a percentage of payroll applied to the taxable wages paid to employees. For example, a road construction company might have nine employees that are classified as 5506. Let’s say those employees have a workers' compensation rate of $12 per 100. That means that for every $100 of taxable wages paid to those employees, the employer is charged $12 for workers compensation insurance. That same company has one 8810 (Clerical) employee. The 8810 employee has a rate of $0.15 per 100. That means that for every $100 of taxable wages paid to that employee, the employer is charged $0.15 for workers’ compensation insurance. 5.) Why is it important to be correctly classified? In the event of an audit (Or injury that leads to an audit), the carrier may determine that employees were incorrectly classified. If so, the insurance company can retroactively bill the client for up to three years of premium that has been incorrectly classified. If employees are misclassified, the claim frequency and loss ratios will be out-of-line with the norm for that class code. Insurance companies use statisticians to keep track of unusual loss patterns and payroll ratios. They will figure it out eventually, possibly resulting in the outcome from bullet point above. Being incorrectly classified can cause insured’s to get dropped by their carrier. Getting dropped puts companies in a frantic rush to find new coverage, meanwhile, the income-producing functions of the business must come to a halt. When a business then tries to get insurance from another carrier, the first question the new insurance company will ask is “Have you recently been dropped or denied coverage?” If this is true, the insurance company will most likely either refuse to quote or markup the rate due to the increased risk. As a business, the best way to save money on workers’ compensation insurance is to build a long, trusting relationship with the carrier. 6.) Why do some states have different class codes for the same type of work? The rules and regulations for workers’ compensation are unique for every state. Most states utilize the NCCI class code system. With states that use NCCI workers’ compensation class codes, the classifications remain almost entirely the same for each of those states (Except for state specials). However, some states do remain independent, or monopolistic. 7.) How to use the NCCI State Reference Guide To see the governing authority for the workers’ compensation class code list of any US state, you can visit the “NCCI State Reference Guide”. After selecting a state from the drop-down menu, the “State Jurisdiction” row will tell you the name of the organization overseeing the classification system. Additionally, the “Policy Data” row will tell you the organization that is in charge of reporting statistical data for their correlating workers’ compensation “Statistical Plan.” 8.) What is the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI)? NCCI is an independent advisory organization that is primarily funded by insurance companies. Most insurance companies use NCCI for various services, such as collecting and analyzing statistical data for workers’ compensation rates. 9.) What is the NCCI Scopes Manual? The NCCI Scopes Manual is used by insurance professionals (Such as underwriters) to identify the class code associated with each type of occupational work. 10.) How to view a free online index of workers’ compensation codes by state. You can view the correlating article for this video at: https://classcodes.com/workers-compensation-class-codes/

FILM DESCRIPTION: John Hughes and Chris Columbus repeat their best-selling formula from the first Home Alone film with this sequel. Once again Kevin McCallister's (Macaulay Culkin) family leave him behind, only now he gets on a flight to New York instead of going with his family to Miami. Kevin manages to hail a cab and is delivered to the doorsteps of the Plaza Hotel, where, using his father's credit card, he rents out a suite and has the time of his life -- although a smarmy hotel clerk (Tim Curry) and bellboy (Rob Schneider) eye him with suspicion. But ingenious Kevin keeps them at bay, using the same tomfoolery he applied to his uncle in the first picture. He takes time out from his consumer debauch to chat with a friendly old toy-store magnate (Eddie Bracken) and pontificate to a homeless Pigeon Lady (Brenda Fricker) on the meaning of Christmas. But then he runs into his old enemies Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern). When he finds out that they plan on robbing the old man's toy store on Christmas Eve, he mans the battle stations once again, complete with electric prods, flames of fire, and sundry blunt instruments. New York to Tokyo in 30mins by BFR SpaceX and Bringing Moon Base

02:24
New York to Tokyo in 30mins by BFR SpaceX and Bringing Moon Base . New York to Tokyo in Just 30mins by SpaceX Intra Planatary City Travel Rocket . Elon Musk proposes using SpaceX's BFR to travel around Earth . Anywhere on the planet in under an hour . BFR Earth to Earth . A rocket built for traveling throughout our solar system could revolutionize travel on Earth, according to Elon Musk. Using a "BFR" flying at a max speed of 18000 mph, he says we could fly anywhere on Earth in under an hour. Musk revealed the plan during tonight's speech at the 68th International Astronautical Congress 2017 in Adelaide, Australia, where he also showed SpaceX's plans for lunar and Mars missions. These "Earth to Earth" trips could make "most" long journeys in under half an hour and, according to Musk, have a cost per seat that is "about the same as full fare economy in an aircraft." The BFR (yes, it stands for what you think it stands for) is SpaceX's next rocket after the Falcon Heavy that Musk said the company hopes will launch by the end of this year. Unlike all of its previous rockets, this one will be fully reusable, and capable of refueling in space, which is key for his plans to do things like resupply the ISS, land on the moon, and start sending missions to Mars by 2022.With refueling in space, the BFR can make trips to the Moon's surface without needing any fuel production there, enabling the creation of "Moon Base Alpha." Overall, the concept is smaller and uses fewer engines than the Interplanetary Transport System Musk described last year, with added flexibility that makes it suitable for more tasks. The new BFR is 106 meters tall with a 9-meter diameter, down from the 122-meter height and 17-meter diameter described last year. The booster rocket uses 31 Raptor engines (down from 42), and there are six Raptor engines on the spacecraft itself (down from nine). Those changes also make it cheaper, which helps answer the other question left open from last year -- how would SpaceX pay for this? The master plan is to build up enough of the company's previous rockets to store a backlog, then turn its capabilities fully to the BFR and only build one rocket for all applications. The BFR will have space for 150 tons of cargo, compared to Falcon Heavy's 30 tons, and will still be fully reusable. Its nose is big enough, Musk said, to launch a mirror that has ten times the surface area of current Hubble telescope without folding it at all, or to go around scooping up out of service satellites. With multiple engines, its built to be as reliable as an airplane, capable of landing even if it loses an engine, unlike the current Falcon 9, and is so precise that it won't even need landing legs. Those are sizable promises, but Musk and SpaceX have big plans to match for the BFR, seeing it as a cost-efficient way to change travel on Earth and beyond. Thanks for watching. Berkshire Hathaway Facing Suit Over Workers Compensation 'Siphoning'

00:49
Shares of Berkshire Hathaway were lower Tuesday on news that it is being sued by a New York City-based bicycle courier company. Breakaway Courier Systems said in the complaint that Warren Buffet's holding company misled them into paying for a workers' compensation plan that cheats employers. Breakaway alleges Berkshire of "siphoning" premiums through an assortment of illegal shell companies, with premiums being directed to unlicensed out-of-state insurers, according to Reuters. The situation resulted in what Breakaway describes as a "reverse Ponzi scheme." Bringing Insurance Fraud to an End | New York Alliance Against Insurance Fraud | Albany, NY

00:31
Are you a victim of insurance fraud? Do you know someone who has been affected by insurance fraud? Do you live in New York? We’re here to educate you! Visit www.fraudny.com and learn how insurance fraud affects people across the country! The positive feelings your family, friends and co-workers have for you can be destroyed in an instant when they learn you are a criminal, caught committing Insurance Fraud. Each year, insurance fraud costs EVERY New Yorker millions of dollars in higher insurance premiums and higher prices for goods and services. Auto-related fraud is one of the worst. Staged auto accidents, inflated injury and damage claims, false registration, faulty air-bag or windshield replacement, towing scams and an owner falsely claiming their car was stolen or destroyed are costly examples of auto insurance fraud. Insurance fraud is any act committed with the intent to obtain a fraudulent outcome from an insurance process. This may occur when a claimant attempts to obtain some benefit or advantage to which they are not otherwise entitled, or when an insurer knowingly denies some benefit that is due. The fact is that insurance fraud occurs everywhere in the state and takes many different forms: workers compensation fraud; owner give-ups in the auto theft arena, arson and fraudulent theft claims in the homeowners arena all cost many millions of dollars in fraudulent claims. That, in turn, increases insurance premiums for all New Yorkers. No matter who commits the crime, there are devastating consequences to businesses and all of us. Injured workers may be left high and dry without proper coverage and honest businesses are dealt a double blow of increased premiums and unfairly losing contracts to lower priced competition. In addition, businesses pay the price through production delays, retraining costs and equipment replacements. These costs weigh our economy down. Another form of fraud is victimizing businesses through fake healthcare plans which can leave business owners and their employees without meaningful coverage and saddled with thousands of dollars in medical bills. Insurance fraud has a tremendous impact on Medicare and Medicaid as well. Nationally, these two programs lose an estimated 60 billion dollars a year to insurance fraud! Each and every one of us needs to take a zero tolerance attitude toward insurance fraud. Visit the New York Alliance Against Insurance Fraud online at http://www.fraudny.com and find out what you can do to help prevent insurance fraud from continuing in our state! If you’d like to help prevent insurance fraud or report an incident of fraud visit us at http://www.fraudny.com or call us at 1-844-FRAUDNY. What are the kinds of compensation?

01:23
There are three types of compensations under workers' compensation. The first is the medical bills. For any medical treatment that you receive for that injury that happened during the course of employment, you would have all those medical bills covered as long as that medical care is approved by workers' compensation. The second would be compensation for any wage for time that you have to take off during that injury. For any time that you are unable to work they'll pay you ⅔ of your salary for that time off. The third is the PPI or the permanent partial impairment. That is the percentage that you are permanently impaired because of your work injury and that's typically the settlement part of workers' compensation and there is a statutory amount per percent that you will be awarded, based on a doctor's assessment. Indianapolis workers' compensation attorney, Stacy Crider, of the Charles D. Hankey Law Office, explains the three types of compensation under workers' compensation. How the Trump Administration will Affect Workers’ Compensation

24:26
President Trump’s administration will no doubt herald significant change for the nation, but what will the change mean for workers’ compensation? In this episode of Workers’ Comp Matters, host Alan Pierce speaks to Peter Rousmaniere, consultant and award winning author on workers compensation, about the potential effect of President Trump, his administration, and a Republican majority in Congress on state-based workers’ comp programs. During their discussion they cover misclassification, immigration, and the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare). They conclude with a conversation about the opt out movement and the biggest errors made by opt out advocates. Peter Rousmaniere helps organizations and individuals as they negotiate through the troubling waters of hazards, uncertainty, risk, and insurance. He specializes in workers compensation, other corporate types of insurance, new risk management product design and implementation, information technology, and risk communication. This Pension System Works

03:03
Fewer workers today have access to a retirement plan that provides specific benefit payments when they retire. Many workers have had their traditional pension plans replaced by 401K-style plans, which has been discussed in New York. Let's take a breath and consider why defined benefit plans like the New York State and Local Retirement System (NYSLRS) work. For more than 90 years, NYSLRS has done what a pension system is supposed to do, provide retirement security for our members. Our pension system is among the best funded and best run in America. With a solid 2012-13 annual return of 10.38 percent, the New York State Common Retirement Fund is now valued at more than $160 billion. And despite the market's recent volatility, the Fund remains well positioned for the future. As Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli notes in this video, NYSLRS is as strong as it's ever been and serves as a powerful counterweight to the arguments that public pension systems are unsustainable.

Common Hazardous Substances in NY Construction

01:06
New York contractors face many unique risk exposures and hazards, and not all workplace injuries involve falls and collisions. While most contractors think about the risk of accidental injury from falls and other catastrophes, few realize the serious exposures many construction workers face to dangerous substances. Dangerous substance are common contributors to New York workers’ compensation claims and can cause gradual and subtle long term illness and impairments to workers. Encountering harmful substances is a real concern for the NY construction industry, as such it is vital that contractors understand and properly prepare for theses risks. Here are 4 of the most common hazardous substances encountered by New York contractors: Asbestos: Asbestos has become a notorious symbol of industrial realated illness. The once commonplace substance can reportedly be linked to more than 100,000 fatalities each year worldwide according to the World Health Organization. The effects of asbestos include increased risk of lung cancer, mesothelioma, inflammation of the digestive tract, respiratory difficulties and much more. Lead: Lead-based paints and piping are a well known danger in both residential and commercial construction. When employees work with lead on the job, they face severe danger from possible poisoning. The symptoms of lead toxicity include cognitive disturbances and severe digestive disorders, the effects of which are serious and can be fatal. Silica: Silica can be found abundantly in the earth’s crust as a naturally occurring mineral taking several forms. This compound is a component of sand, stone, rock, concrete, brick, block, and mortar, and can be extremely harmful to the respiratory system. Silica inhalation can lead to increased levels of lung cancer, respiratory distress and compromised cardiovascular functioning. Pesticides: As a toxin designed to irradiate unwanted critters, pesticide can be lethal to humans in sufficiently high concentrations. Contractors who specialize in landscaping and vegetation work spend hours outdoors and can frequently be exposed to such hazards in high doses. Modern pesticides have been known to cause cancer and birth defects. NY contractors need strong workers compensation solutions to protect their workers and their assets. At Hartan, we offer a quality New York Workers’ Compensation programs so that employers can secure this fundamental coverage at affordable prices. Baltimore Construction Workers Compensation

01:45
According to state law, employers are not required to purchase Baltimore construction workers comp coverage for independent contractors. However, there have been cases of employers misclassifying employees as independent contractors to avoid paying payroll taxes and Baltimore construction workers comp premiums for them. Not only is this illegal, it is unethical. As an owner or manager of a construction firm, it's important to comply with all workers compensation laws. It's equally important to know who qualifies as an employee and who would be considered an independent contractor under Baltimore construction workers comp law. For Baltimore workers compensation insurance purposes, the term "employee" typically includes day labor, leased employees, borrowed employees, part-time employees, unpaid volunteers, and most subcontractors. Whether or not a contractor for your firm is an employee is controlled by the circumstances surrounding the employees' work. So what circumstances does this include? Hiring and Pay In order to be considered an employee, the worker needs to be interviewed and formally hired. Independent contractors typically receive payment by each job they perform, while employees receive wages on an hourly or salaried basis. Equipment Provided Another factor in distinguishing an independent contractor from an employee is who provides the equipment used for the job. An independent contractor typically provides their own equipment while an employer generally provides the equipment for the employee to complete the job. Character of Work and Training If the work being performed is highly skilled, and the worker only performs a single job, that worker can probably be classified as an independent contractor. However, if the worker is trained by and receives regular work from the same company, the worker is more likely to be considered an employee. Written Agreements It's important for employers to know that an agreement stating the worker is an "independent contractor" may not be sufficient enough to qualify the worker as such. If the worker meets all the characteristics of an independent contractor listed above, your State Workers Compensation Board will consider this along with the agreement. At The Advantage Group, we understand that Baltimore Construction Workers Compensation Insurance is one of the biggest expenses for companies, no matter what their size. Putting together a workers comp plan that suits our customers' needs is one of our many specialty programs. What to Do After Being Seriously Injured at Work - New York Attorney Dallin Fuchs Explains

02:16
What to Do After Being Seriously Injured at Work - New York Attorney Dallin Fuchs Explains http://www.quellerfisher.com (212) 406-1700 New York personal injury attorney Dallin Fuchs explains what you should do if you've been injured at work and need to recover from your losses. In most cases, your employer will carry what is called "worker's compensation" insurance. This is a policy set in place that allows any employee injured to get their medical treatment paid for no matter who is at fault for the accident. However, the system has its drawbacks and you need to know what they are. For example, the insurance only covers a very small amount of your lost wages and sometimes not even all of your medical bills. In that instance, we may be able to look at your employer or co-worker to see if they are responsible for your accident and bring a lawsuit against them personally. We would file with their own insurance to help cover the gap between what your losses are and what can be covered by your worker's compensation plan. Watch this video to learn more. For more information, visit our educational website at http://www.quellerfisher.com. If you have legal questions, I want you to call me at (212) 406-1700. I welcome your call. CA Injured Workers Protest Corruption Of WC and Demand Right To Healthcare

01:02:31
At a meeting of the California Division of Workers Compensation which is under Christine Baker who runs the Division of Industrial Relations injured workers charged that the system was corrupt and there was rampant workers comp fraud by the insurance industry and employers. They also charged the officials of the DWC with being in collusion with the criminals in the insurance industry by allowing them to illegally deny medical care and allowing the Maximus company to violate the rules. DWC Acting Administrative Director Destie Overpeck refused to answer questions about what her agency is doing about the investigation and prosecution of workers comp fraud. Dr. Rupali Das who is the executive medical director of the Division of Workers Compensation told the audience that doctors should be advocates for injured workers without getting paid for their work.
