Gabapentin: Neurontin

18:58
Lyrica and its relative Neurontin or gabapentin are widely overprescribed for pain related disorders. Although approved for treating pain after shingles, evidence for their benefit remains quite sketchy. Gabapentin now ranks as one of the top drugs of abuse with at least 50% or people abusing opioids like hydrocodone and oxycodone simultaneously taking these “johnnies” or “gabbies.” In fatal drug overdoses, gabapentin often appears as a contributing factor.

How Long Should I Take Gabapentin For Nerve Pain | Gabapentin Nerve Pain Dosage Subscribe To Get New Videos Daily: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCi1zZ8_Q7yqKInXImLCLfXw First, we must consider the different neuropathic pain types. Neuropathic pain can be diverse in nature, encompassing a wide range of pain types, including post-herpetic neuralgia, painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy, and painful cancer-related neuropathies. Gabapentin has been shown to be beneficial in treating several types of neuropathic pain; however, the mechanism of action by which gabapentin exerts its analgesic effect is still unknown. It is suggested that gabapentin may block the calcium channel alpha delta receptor in the brain. This protein-modulated receptor is involved in excitatory synapse formation. Therefore, the therapeutic effects of gabapentin may be attributed to prevention of new synapse formations. Gabapentin was shown to offer substantial improvement in neuropathic pain with side effects that were similar to those on placebo. Even with sufficient data supporting the use of gabapentin in the treatment of various neuropathic pain conditions, gabapentin only has Food and Drug Administration approval for PHN. Dosing recommendations for off-label use of gabapentin can be somewhat ambiguous, if a recommendation exists at all. Therefore, several studies further investigate dosing regimens specific to other neuropathic pain syndromes. Gabapentin Dosing Considerations: Three gabapentin products are FDA approved to treat PHN. The different formulations cannot be interchanged and each has its own dosing schedule. For immediate-release gabapentin, dosing may be initiated with 300 mg on day 1, doubled on day 2, and tripled on day 3 . The dose can then be titrated up as needed for pain relief to a maximum dose of 1,800 mg daily. Clinical studies referenced in the package insert state that efficacy for a range of doses from 1,800 mg/day to 3,600 mg/day were observed; however, there was no additional benefit seen with doses greater than 1,800 mg/d. Gralise is an extended-release gabapentin formulation that also is FDA approved for PHN with a titration schedule that begins with 300 mg on day 1; 600 mg on day 2; 900 mg on days 3 to 6; 1,200 mg on days 7 to 10; 1,500 mg on days 11 to 14; and 1,800 mg on day 15 and thereafter. The third gabapentin formulation for PHN treatment is another extended-release product, Horizant. The starting dose is 600 mg in the morning for 3 days, increased to 600 mg twice daily on day 4 and thereafter. A daily dose of Horizant greater than 1,200 mg provided no additional benefit at the expense of side effects. Gabapentin/Neurontin Review

07:05
Gabapentin/Neurontin, is a medication used primarily for seizure disorders and pain associated with the nerves. It can be used for nerve pain related to the herpes virus or shingles. It is also commonly used by diabetics who have suffered nerve pain. I find that this medication continues to work wonder for me, even after daily use for 3+ years. It helps prevent my migraines (at least it seems to) and once I have one, it helps the dull the pain. It also has help with occasional back pain problems. It has been a life saver for my insomnia. I am able to cope better with my day to day task because this medication helps me cope with my Clinical Depression, of which has haunted me since the passing of my father. There is no such thing as a miracle pill or a miracle cure for anything, but this medication has been a huge help for me over the years. Thanks for reading/watching my video.

Neurontin To Treat Adults with Nerve Pain Caused by Shingles - Overview

00:51
http://www.rxwiki.com/neurontin https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXxn_pCvHVm5rtYCS2sLMNQ2j1LWbE0_L Neurontin, the brand name form of gabapentin, is a prescription medication used to treat adults with nerve pain caused by shingles. Shingles is a painful rash that is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the virus that also causes chickenpox. Neurontin is also used in combination with other medications to treat partial seizures. Neurontin belongs to a group of drugs called anticonvulsants, which help treat seizures by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain. It also works by altering the way the body senses pain. This medication comes in tablet, capsule, and oral (by mouth) solution forms and is taken up to 3 times a day, with or without food. The capsules are taken with a full glass of water. Common side effects of Neurontin include dizziness, lack of coordination, and drowsiness. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how Neurontin affects you.

Abuse on the rise of prescription drug gabapentin, known as 'Johnnys' - WXYZ 12-09-2017

03:34
Neurontin, Gabapentin and Lyrica is a Death sentence to new brain synapses and can lead to suicidal thoughts http://fibromyalgiaresources.com/neurontin-lyrica-death-sentence-new-brain-synapses/ and http://medsnews.com/health/neurontin-and-lyrica-two-treatments-for-pain-that-can-lead-to-suicidal-thoughts/ If you aren’t on this medication, chances are you know someone who is. It’s used to treat everything from pain to mood disorders and can be just what the doctor ordered for many. But now, there is mounting research uncovering misuse of and even a black market for this popular prescription. We’re talking about gabapentin. It’s approved for some types of seizures and nerve pain. Doctors also use it off-label to treat everything from insomnia to migraines to anxiety. Sixty-four million prescriptions of it were sold in the U.S. in 2016, up more than 60% from four years earlier. The thing is, experts say there is growing evidence it’s being abused, too. It’s even being sold on the streets under the name “Johnnys.” Dr. Joseph Insler, an addiction psychiatrist, says he’s seeing it all too often. “Sometimes, I've even experienced patients ask me for their “Johnnys” and then they'll, maybe, catch themselves and say, ‘No, no, no. I mean gabapentin',” he says. Why is this prescription being misused? “I think that some individuals may say that they use it to get high, and others may say they use it and get a drowsy effect. So, we're talking about the euphoria versus sedation, “ says Rachel Vickers Smith, Ph.D. Dr Vickers Smith wrote her dissertation on gabapentin abuse when studying drug abusers in Appalachia. “We found a nearly 3000 percent increase from 2008 to about 2014 in individuals reporting gabapentin abuse for the purposes of getting high,” she says. We wanted to see for ourselves, so we searched online. We easily found people talking about taking “Johnnys”, or gabapentin, to get high. There were also threads of people trying to spread awareness about the abuse. Experts say gabapentin is typically misused by substance abusers who mix it with other drugs. But, Dr. Insler says it’s also possible for people with legitimate prescriptions to misuse, too. He says, “If somebody’s taking excessively high doses or needing early refills” or if their mood changes, family members or clinicians should see these signs as red flags. A growing body of research shows the problem of abuse, especially among substance abusers is clear. But some experts also worry about the number of prescriptions being handed out. A recent New England Journal of Medicine letter warned that “clinicians who are desperate for alternatives to opioids” are “increasingly prescribing gabapentin” and that “evidence suggests that some patients misuse, abuse or divert gabapentin.” http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp1704633?rss=mostEmailed&#t=article Dr Rachel Vickers Smith says, “ I think that's why it's really important to get out the message,” about abuse, in general. Gabapentin is not a controlled substance or scheduled drug on the Federal level. We reached out to several government agencies. There was little information on potential abuse although the National Institute on Drug Abuse pointed us to existing research and the DEA says it is beginning to receive calls. Dr Vickers Smith says, “ I don't think that gabapentin abuse is on the CDC, DEA’s, NIDA’s radar, in part because we had this opioid epidemic.” All experts we talked to stress that this is NOT the next opioid epidemic, but they believe gabapentin abuse is something to watch closely and believe more research is needed. We contacted two of the manufacturers of gabapentin, including Pfizer, which told us, “Gabapentin is an important treatment option for their approved indications”.

Gabapentin Dosage For Nerve Pain | What Every Patient Should Know

06:44
Gabapentin Dosage For Nerve Pain | What Every Patient Should Know Subscribe To Get New Videos Daily: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCi1zZ8_Q7yqKInXImLCLfXw Neuropathic pain is a chronic debilitating pain syndrome that is complex to treat. Current medication management for neuropathic pain includes select neuromodulating agents such as anticonvulsants, serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, and certain opioids. Gabapentin remains among the most commonly used anticonvulsants for neuropathic pain. The established therapeutic dosing for gabapentin in neuropathic pain trials is 1800-3600 mg/day in 3 divided doses in patients with normal renal function. This means the minimum effective dose is 600 mg 3 times a day. Renal adjustments are recommended in patients with CrCl below 60 mL/min. For patients on dialysis, gabapentin can often be 3 times weekly following dialysis. Several cross-sectional studies have reported gabapentin being used in subtherapeutic doses among most patients. In a retrospective analysis of 939 patients with post-herpetic neuralgia, the mean daily dose of gabapentin was 826 mg. In another 2-year retrospective study of 151 veterans with various neuropathic pain syndromes, the median daily dose for gabapentin was 900 mg. In both studies, the most prevalent gabapentin dosing was half the therapeutic dosing. What Every Patient Should Know: Patients should be aware of the therapeutic dosing for neuropathic pain to establish realistic expectations and improve compliance and likelihood of remaining on therapy. The conversation may be as follows: “Gabapentin may reduce nerve pain at 600 mg 3 times a day but patients usually start on a low dose to make sure they tolerate it and is then increased slowly to give the body a chance to get used to it. Gabapentin Abuse: Despite its therapeutic role in neuropathic pain, gabapentin produces psychoactive effects and has an abuse liability. Gabapentin abuse typically involves taking higher doses in a single administration. In conclusion, pharmacists as medication experts are well-poised to educate prescribers and patients on therapeutic dosing of gabapentin to optimize its rational and appropriate use for treating neuropathic pain. Is Gabapentin An Opioid ? Long Term Side Effects Of Gabapentin

06:11
Is Gabapentin An Opioid ? Long Term Side Effects Of Gabapentin Subscribe To Get New Videos Daily: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCi1zZ8_Q7yqKInXImLCLfXw --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For many individuals, gabapentin is a necessary medication. It can be used to treat seizures, neuropathic pain, restless leg syndrome, and a number of other issues. Unfortunately, though, like most medications, gabapentin has a number of side effects, some of which are mild but many of which can be serious, even dangerous. Mild Gabapentin Side Effects: The National Library of Medicine states that the drug “may cause side effects” that can be uncomfortable or frustrating to the user. Many of the most common side effects are not dangerous and can be treated by having your doctor reduce your prescription or prescribe another type of medication to minimize them. However, you should always talk to your doctor first when you begin to experience these issues. Never stop taking gabapentin altogether, as the drug can cause a severe withdrawal syndrome. The mild side effects associated with gabapentin include: Tiredness.Weakness.Drowsiness.Unsteadiness.Blurred vision or double vision.Unusual eye movements.Uncontrollable shaking of a body part.Jerky movements.Headaches.Fever.Nausea.Heartburn.Diarrhea.Constipation.Dry mouth.Swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, and calves.Pain in the back or jointsFlu-like symptoms Less common side effects of gabapentin include: Back pain.Frequent urination.Increased appetite.Decreased libido.Itchy eyes or red eyes that may tear up or produce discharge.Bloated or full feeling.Earache.Excessive gas.Flushed, dry skin.Increased sensitivity to pain.Increased sensitivity to touch.Indigestion.Voice changes.Weight gain.Sweating.Vomiting.Dizziness. Some of the mild side effects are more commonly experienced by children who use gabapentin. These can include dizziness, weakness, nausea, constipation, headache, blurred vision, hyperactivity, false sense of well-being, and loss of balance or coordination. These effects are usually not very intense and can be treated easily. However, they can create severe issues if they go untreated. Especially if you begin to feel that you are experiencing one of these side effects that is getting worse every day or is too severe to allow you to live your life, you should call your doctor to make a change to your prescription or to be prescribed another type of medication. Serious Side Effects of Gabapentin: Gabapentin can cause serious issues as well, some of which are direct effects of the more common side effects associated with normal use of the drug. According to the US Food and Drug Administration, the “sleepiness and dizziness” often caused by normal gabapentin use can “increase the occurrence of accidental injury.” As a patient taking gabapentin, one must remember this possible side effect and be very careful during the times where the drug is active in one’s system. Some adult users may also experience mood changes, signs of dementia, symptoms of anxiety or depression, feelings of agitation or hostility, restlessness, hyperactivity, and self-harming or suicidal thoughts. If these occur, inform your doctor immediately. GABAPENTIN, NEURONTIN & LYRICA- WHEN MEDS CAN KILL YOU

06:57
No evidence that proves Gabapentin helps people with bipolar disorder. If there is a clinical trial that was ever done that proves the efficacy of using Gabapentin to treat bipolar disorder I have never been able to locate it. There IS evidence however that Neurontin (which gabapentin is the generic form ) induces suicidal ideation and increases the risk of suivide. Is this a drug that should be given to bipolar patients? A drug that artificially induces depression by tamping down the synapses so that the neurons are no longer receiving electrical signals from the synapses? When the central nervous system is suppressed any function of the CNS has the possibility of becoming affected. Which is why so many bizarre side effects are occurring from these drugs. Which physicians in turn are telling their patients cannot possibly be related or a side effect of gabapentin or Neurontin or Lyrica. But they ARE related. Although more than likely it will be ascribed to another NEW & SEPARATE disorder. When in reality-because your central nervous system ceases to work properly on this drug. I almost died from respiratory failure on gabapentin. Because the respiratory system is controlled my the central nervous system. As far as Gabapentin & Lyrica being used to treat pain, the protocols for treating pain with Lyrica and Gabapentin were developed by a physician who later went to prison for his completely falsified "research". Yet those protocols have never been rescinded and are still being used today. I have included the links to this info. Take these drugs at your own risk. And be warned that WHEN you begin to experience side affects (and you will at some point) your physician will most likely dismiss the link to Gabapentin & Lyrica AND they will not tell you of Gabapentin withdrawals. Over a year after being off of Gabapentin I still suffer from dystonia, Hypertonia, as well as several other neuro movement disorders that may be permanent. I was also advised by my pharmacy to just stop taking it. Which could have killed me. In addition to making my movement disorders induced by these drugs as possibly being permanent. You are not getting the full story on these drugs. Hopefully someday this drug will be exposed for the reality of it being the big pharmaceutical hoax that it is. Snake oil. But until then, be proactive. Do your research. And if you decide to stop taking it -a slow taper off is necessary or you can easily be left with a wide variety of side effects or movement disorders that will cause you to suffer years later. WHY are bipolar patients be given drugs that induce suicidal feelings? What Medications Did I Take and Find Helpful for My Disc Bulge?

04:24
Over the long journey of suffering from lower back pain, I've been through more than a handful of medications and I have found some helpful and others not so helpful. In this video, I explain several of the medications that I took and the one's that I found most helpful. The biggest thing with a disc bulge injury is that the disc that is protruding places pressure on the nerve roots. Ultimately, this results in a sharp pain and inflammation will eventually build up around the injured area. In order to treat the symptoms of pain and inflammation, their are several medications that may be prescribed to an individual. In my case, I was prescribed several different medications including Ibuprofen, Lyrica, Nucynta, Tylenol 3, and novo-moloxicam. The medications I found to be most effective and helpful for treating my symptoms of pain and inflammation were Ibuprofen and Tylenol 3. Also, I found Lyrica to be somewhat helpful at times as well. As for the other medications, I didn't' find them as helpful but that could of been for a number of reasons such as the dosage not being high enough. Additionally, in this video, I explain some of the side effects I experienced with taking several of these drugs including Lyrica. Can You Get High On Gabapentin ? Gabapentin High Experience

03:35
Can you get high on gabapentin | gabapentin high experience Subscribe To Get New Videos Daily: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCi1zZ8_Q7yqKInXImLCLfXw EFFECT OF GABAPENTIN ON THE BRAIN: Gabapentin is a drug used primarily to treat symptoms like seizures and epilepsies. It has also been approved by the Food and Drug Administration of the United States. The drug has been promoted under the brands Horizant, and Neurontin. The drug is sometimes used as a pain reliever for neurotic pain caused by some diseases like shingles. However, unlike other pain relievers, Gabapentin is neither an opiate nor a narcotic. Hence, the threat of its abuse or misuse has been disregarded for years. Nevertheless, drug agencies are starting to get alarmed by reports that this once thought to be harmless drug is starting to become a nationwide problem. Data have shown that there may be a growing trend in the recreational of Gabapentin. EUPHORIC EFFECTS OF GABAPENTIN: Some Gabapentin users have reported that by taking a high dosage of the drug, one can have a similar “high” effect as marijuana. There are also some testimonies that the drug has helped them become more sociable in large groups of people. Another potential effect of Gabapentin is a sense of relaxation, or sedation which attracts many drug abusers. When used alongside other depressants, a user can experience high levels of sedation. This is not recommended as it may result in deadly side effects such as cardiac arrest if done improperly. Gabapentin has a low toxicity level compared to other drugs like heroin or morphine. However, there have been instances that people taking the drug for recreational purposes resulted in an overdose. Why IS THE RECREATIONAL USE OF GABAPENTIN BECOMING POPULAR? Since it was approved as a pain reliever for the pain caused by shingles in 2002, the prescription and purchase of Gabapentin has increased exponentially. Many blame the lack of restrictions on the drug. However, some argue that there may be other factors affecting its popularity among recreational users. Here are some possible reasons why the drug’s recreational use have been increasing in the past years: Affordability: Gabapentin is significantly cheaper compared to other abused drugs. The average cost of each pill will cost a person merely 60 cents. It can also be bought in varying dosages such as 100 mg, 300 mg, and 400 mg. Drug Withdrawal: Some doctors prescribe Gabapentin to persons undergoing drug rehabilitation to combat some of the withdrawal symptoms that they are experiencing. Sadly, some people end up shifting their addiction to Gabapentin instead. Accessibility: Being non-narcotic Gabapentin is not classified as a controlled substance by the FDA. Thus, anyone can obtain it with a simple prescription from their doctor. Lesser Side Effects: While Gabapentin may have lesser side effects compared to other drugs, it worth noting that there still have been instances where patients died due to overdose. Gabapentin is seen as a miracle drug by some people experiencing seizures and epilepsies. Some may have found a recreational use for it; however, it is still highly unadvisable to abuse it. Always consult your doctor before taking this drug, and remember only to take as much as your doctor has prescribed you. Gabapentin To Treat Adults With Nerve Pain Caused by Shingles - Overview

00:50
http://www.rxwiki.com/gabapentin https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXxn_pCvHVm6GkANUnZbJL2TC86w19KA8 Gabapentin is a prescription medication used to treat adults with nerve pain caused by shingles. Shingles is a painful rash that is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the virus that also causes chickenpox. Gabapentin is also used in combination with other medications to treat partial seizures. Gabapentin belongs to a group of drugs called anticonvulsants, which help treat seizures by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain. It also works by altering the way the body senses pain. This medication comes in tablet, capsule, and oral solution forms. It is taken up to three times a day, with or without food. The capsules should be taken with a full glass of water. Common side effects of gabapentin include lack of coordination, dizziness, and drowsiness. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how Gabapentin affects you.

Neuropathy, Nerve Pain and Social Security Disability

07:03
Chronic, intractable nerve pain or neuropathy can be so uncomfortable that getting through a work day will be impossible. Since Social Security defines disability in terms of how your medical problems prevent you from working, neuropathy can be a disabling condition. As I discuss in this video, disability judges expect to see reports from specialists like neurologists, nerve condition study test results and prescriptions for strong nerve pain medications like neurontin. SSD judges also look for causation - what is the source of your nerve pain - is it a disc problem, diabetes, a medication reaction or something else. If causation is clear you may be able to argue that listing 11.14 applies, although in most cases your attorney will present a functional capacity argument - that your nerve pain has so reduced your capacity for work that you would not be reliable at any job. If your peripheral neuropathy cannot be controlled despite your doctor’s best efforts and your compliance with recommended treatment, then your chances at winning SSDI or SSI are good. ===============FREE SURVIVAL KIT==================== Don’t know where to begin? What is Lyrica? – With Alternative Medicine That Helps!

04:21
Click on the link below for a free video guide to dietary supplements and alternative medicine! http://utahtexans.com/ In this video I'm going to go over what lycrica is and how it's used. I'm also going to share a few alternative medicine that can also help. Before I get started down below is a link where I”m giving away a free video guide to dietary supplements and alternative medicine! Lycrica is a prescription drug without insurance if you went down to Rite Aid the cost for 30 capsules at 150 milligrams would be around $150 dollars. What it's used for is to help with fibromyalgia, which causes a lot of pain in muscles, it helps control seizures and to treat nerve damage. If your wondering how someone gets nerve damage, Anything from diabetes, shingles or a spinal chord injury can cause it. How exactly the drug works is unclear, but one theory is that it decreases the number of nerve signals and thus relaxes over sensitive nerve cells. Like all prescription drugs there is always a risk. One large risk is that it's going to create a bunch of free radicals as your body breaks it down. Free radicals do contribute to a lot of health problems, create wrinkles and possibly cancer. Other common side effects would be insomnia, depression and dizziness. Apart from this drug one alternative medicine that could help would be to take a good multivitamin supplement. A lot of the B vitamins play a big role in the nervous system and being deficient in 1 could cause some big problems. There is also a big connection between vitamin D and fibromyalgia. For example a study lead by Dr. Florian Wepner of orthopedic hospital Vienna took 30 women with fibromyalgia and low levels of vitamin D. Some of the women took a vitamin D supplement and some didn't. 50 weeks later the women that took a supplement received less pain and morning fatigue. Also consuming more omega 3 fats such as with a supplement does have a direct impact on the nervous system. In a study published in the 2005 issue of Epilepsy Behavior suggest that omega 3 supplements could reduce the frequency of seizures. Lastly warm baths, exercise, keeping blood sugar under control and messages might help as well. There really are tons of more options. If you are interested in more alternative medicine and supplements and how they can help I highly encourage you to check out a free video guide I created. It goes over the 10 signs a supplement should be avoided. Ingredients you want to avoid and a whole lot more. You can learn more by clicking on the link below this video.

6 Hacks To Stop Underarm Sweating Permanently How To Stop Sweaty Armpits Subscribe To Get New Videos Daily: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCi1zZ8_Q7yqKInXImLCLfXw --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How Does Gabapentin Work, What Does Gabapentin Do And Gabapentin Reviews Knowing drugs like Gabapentin work in the body is important in evaluating the usefulness of new anticonvulsants. It helps doctors and drug manufacturers understand how it can affect different parts of the body. With this, they can adjust the chemistry of the drug to improve its performance or remove unwanted side effects. Gabapentin is the generic version of Neurontin. It is a drug used to prevent and control seizures. The drug can be taken on its own or as an adjuvant to other anti-seizure medications. Aside from that, adults can also consume it to alleviate neuropathic pain. Two of its known unverified uses include treatment for migraines and insomnia. However, although not a controlled substance, Gabapentin has also been the subject of substance abuse. Known on the streets as the “gabbies,” some have been taking advantage of this drug’s side effects to feel euphoria. WHAT IS EPILEPSY AND NEUROPATHIC PAIN? To fully understand how Gabapentin works, you must first know and understand the diseases it aims to prevent: epilepsy and neuropathic pains. Epilepsy is a disorder affecting the nervous system. It causes the sufferer to become unconscious suddenly and to have violent and uncontrolled movements in the body. If we think of it regarding electricity, epilepsy is like your body short circuiting. Now, let’s discuss neuropathic pains. This type of pain happens when the nervous system or nerves undergo an abnormally quick rate of degeneration. Doctors usually link it to other diseases such as herpes, shingles, or even diabetes. As you can observe, both the diseases Gabapentin treats are problems mainly on the nervous system, giving you an idea of how this drug works. HOW IS GABAPENTIN PROCESSED BY YOUR BODY? The body handles Gabapentin in the same way it processes other drugs. Once you take the recommended dosage of Gabapentin, it goes to the stomach where it breaks down into smaller particles. The components of gabapentin work by being absorbed in your intestines. The blood vessels carry the absorbed Gabapentin along with the other nutrients to the liver. Now, the drug goes through a “screening process.” As it is a foreign object, the liver will do its job and block a certain amount of it. Once transported into the brain, Gabapentin will stabilize the electrical impulses that fire within the central nervous system. Now, the way neurotransmitters send messages to the brain is now affected. Gabapentin does that by altering the amount of GABA, a “nerve-calming” agent produced by the body. At the same time, it inhibits the production of glutamate, a “nerve-exciting” agent. Experts blame this neurotransmitter as the reason why epileptic seizures happen. WHAT ARE ITS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS? Although quite effective in preventing epileptic seizures, it comes with some side effects that may range from very mild to severe. Some of them happen naturally as a result of how the drug works. Drowsiness: Knowing already what GABA and its function in your body, it makes sense to feel drowsiness as an effect. It is the reason why some have also used it to cure insomnia. What GABA does is calm the brain, thus causing drowsiness.
