What's the difference between weather and climate?

02:01
Video transcript: What's the difference between weather and climate? Take a look outside your window. Is it hot and sunny? Is it cloudy and rainy? Is there snow on the ground? When you look out the window, you’re seeing what the weather is like today. Weather is only temporary. For example, a blizzard can turn into a flood after just a few warm spring days. Climate, on the other hand, is more than just a few warm or cool days. Climate describes the typical weather conditions in an entire region for a very long time—30 years or more. Keeping an eye on changing weather can help us plan ahead. We know that if thunderclouds are forming overhead, it’s probably a good idea to stay inside. But it’s important to keep an eye on changes in Earth’s climate, too. And NASA has observed that Earth is getting warmer. Keeping track of Earth’s sea level is one way that we can know how quickly the climate is changing. As Earth’s climate warms, ice in Antarctica and Greenland is melting. This causes the level of the oceans to rise. NASA satellites can measure sea level rise from space. They can also track changes in the climate by measuring the clouds. We know that changes in the number, size or location of clouds could be caused by a change in Earth’s climate. NASA satellites are always orbiting Earth, looking down at our oceans and clouds. And they monitor Earth’s climate in other ways, too. It’s important to keep an eye on our planet and all the ways that it’s changing. Right now, it’s the only one we’ve got! Find out more about our Earth at NASA Climate Kids! Music: "Shine Bright" by Scott Holmes http://www.scottholmesmusic.com

Climate Change Explained

05:50
A straightforward explanation of Climate Change: the heat from human emissions is roughly equal to exploding 400,000 Hiroshima atomic bombs every day. Historically, every time carbon dioxide levels increase in Earth's atmosphere, the average surface temperature increases, ice melts, and the seas rise. Oceans of the World for Kids | Learn all about the 5 Oceans of the Earth

08:44
Learn all about the 5 Oceans of the World in this video designed for kids and elementary students. We walk through the geographic locations for each ocean and share some unique facts about each area. We hope you enjoy learning all about our Oceans. For more resources download our comprehensive lesson plan found here: Oceans of the World: https://www.clarendonlearning.org/lesson-plans/oceans-of-the-world/ What Lives in the Oceans: https://www.clarendonlearning.org/lesson-plans/what-lives-in-the-ocean/ The Oceans of the earth are vast…they are humongous! Over 72% of the earth is covered with water called Oceans and Seas There are five major Oceans of the world, and although these Oceans are all connected, they each have a different name. They are; The Pacific Ocean…the Atlantic Ocean…the Indian Ocean…The Southern Ocean (also called the Antarctic Ocean) …and the Arctic Ocean. Here are some specific facts about each ocean. Pacific Ocean: Located between the continents of Asia, N./S. America & Australia ~The largest of the 5 oceans, covers 30% of the Earth’s surface. ~ The word Pacific means peaceful, but the ocean is not calm or peaceful. ~ Many volcanoes are located in the ocean: The “Ring of Fire”. ~ The deepest part is nearly 7 miles below the surface. ~ The Great Barrier Reef is located off the Australian coast. Atlantic Ocean: Located between the continents America, Europe, and Africa ~ About half the size of the Pacific Ocean ~ Many sharks are found in the waters of the ocean. ~ Islands located in the Atlantic include the Bahamas and Greenland, which is the largest island on Earth. ~ The word Atlantic means “Sea of Atlas”. ~ Cities on the Atlantic Ocean include Miami and London. Indian Ocean: Located between Africa, Australia and parts of Asia ~ Largest breeding grounds of the world for humpback whales. ~ The Suez Canal in Egypt is a waterway in the ocean. ~ Cities along the ocean include Mumbai, India; Perth, Australia; and Singapore. ~ Many endangered species live here such as turtles and seals. Arctic Ocean: Located around the North Pole across the Arctic circle ~ Home to many of the Polar Bears of the world. ~ Smallest ocean and most shallow, but is the coldest. ~ Sometimes called the “frozen ocean”, almost completely covered in ice during the winter, ~ There are more fish species here than anywhere else in the world. Southern Ocean: Located around the South Pole across the Antarctic circle ~ Home to the Emperor Penguins and Wandering Albatrosses ~ Sometimes it is also called the Antarctic Ocean ~ Icebergs are found throughout the Southern Ocean ~ No people live along the coast of the ocean Thank you for following Clarendon Learning. Hear the Otherworldly Sounds of Skating on Thin Ice | National Geographic

03:08
This small lake outside Stockholm, Sweden, emits otherworldly sounds as Mårten Ajne skates over its precariously thin, black ice. “Wild ice skating,” or “Nordic skating,” is both an art and a science. A skater seeks out the thinnest, most pristine black ice possible—both for its smoothness, and for its high-pitched, laser-like sounds. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Like a dome or arch, the support comes from the sides rather than the top, and the water underneath prevents the ice from breaking. But, experience and careful advance planning are key. Factors including temperature, atmospheric conditions, and even satellite images of the Earth’s surface are considered. It’s complicated, but appealing to mathematicians like Ajne. Even with preparation, there’s a risk of falling in… So it’s best done in groups, for safety. Proof of Weather Modification | NASA, HAARP & Chemtrail Technology ▶️️

19:01
Weather hasn't been natural since the mid 1900's or maybe even earlier and NASA has it's name written all over it. Of course, HAARP and HAARP-like facilities as well as chemtrails play their role. Weather modification programs have been active for decades and still people choose to ignore them and act they are only "conspiracy theories". In this video I am breaking down older technolgies, but there are new ones like NEXRAD and SBX-1. They admit that HAARP can tamper with the natural weather, but they claim it has been shut down. Funny thing about that is there are many other HAARP like facilities all over the world that do the same thing. When you combine it with geoengineering and chemtrails, you get full control over the weather. In this video, we also go over weather control in movies and tv shows such as 'Our Man Flint' (1966), 'Bionic Woman' (1977), 'G.I. Joe' Revenge of Cobra (1984) and 'The Avengers' (1998). These media artifacts demonstrate "Truth in plain sight" by rubbing weather control and military weather modification technology in our faces. The messed up thing is that, eventhough weather control is proven to exist and easily researchable, we still have to constantly prove the existence weather modification programs to the average zombie slave. If you're reading this and you're offended, you should be. This has been done to ALL of us on purpose. #top10

7 Ways to Survive Natural Disasters

09:35
How to Survive Natural Disasters. Here’s a list of survival tips that can save your life in an emergency. We live in a time when natural disasters occur more and more often and get more and more devastating. Many of us believe we should blame the human race for that. Whether it’s true or not, we all want to know how to survive when those disasters happen. Some rules are universal for most natural disasters. A national campaign called Ready was started in the United States to inform the population about how to get ready for and survive in different emergency situations. It recommends having a basic survival kit to provide you with the most important things just in case. Remember you will need to have enough food, water, and other supplies for at least 72 hours after the disaster. “Other supplies” include a battery powered weather radio, flashlight, first aid kit, a whistle, a dust mask, personal sanitation items (such as moist towelettes), pliers, can opener for food, maps of your area and an emergency cell phone with backup batteries. TIMESTAMPS Hurricane 0:40 Tornado 1:45 Tsunami 3:15 Flood 4:10 Avalanche 5:03 Wildfire 6:00 Earthquake 7:00 SUMMARY - If a hurricane starts while you are driving, leave your vehicle and find a building to shelter in, or a ditch. Stopping in an overpass will not save you. If your home is a trailer and there is enough time to flee to a safe area – do it. - If a tornado starts when you are in a public building, follow the same rules. You want to stay as low as possible. Avoid windows and open spaces such as auditoriums, gyms, and large hallways. Desks and benches can give you some extra protection if you get under them. It is impossible to outrun a tornado. - Tsunamis are so fast they hit the coast minutes after the earthquake. Remember that tall buildings, including hotels right in the beach area, can provide an excellent shelter. In case a tsunami finds you at sea, stay there instead of going back to the coast. It won’t be a safe haven. - Don’t try to be the bravest person around and stay in your house once you hear the evacuation warning. Leave for safety in higher grounds with your important papers in a waterproof container. If a flash flood gives you no time to evacuate and the water is all around you, don’t try to swim across it. - When an avalanche starts, try to move to the side of the slope as fast as you can. There will be more snow in the center of the flow. To move faster, drop any heavy equipment you have on you. If you can’t escape it, try using a sturdy tree to keep you above the snow. - If you find yourself in a wildfire area, it is critically important to ensure that you can breathe. If you fail to do it, you can pass out in the midst of a danger zone. Use a wet cloth to cover your nose and mouth and escape to safety. - If an earthquake starts when you are inside, stay where you were. Experts say that during an earthquake you must drop to the floor, get underneath a table, cover your neck and head with one hand, and hold on with the other hand. Your entire body must be under the table. Don’t try to run out of the building - the exterior of a building is one of the most dangerous places. Naked Science - Angry Earth

50:04
2004 Documentary - Naked Science Season 1 - Angry Earth Naked Science is an American documentary television series that premiered in 2004 on the National Geographic Channel. The programme features various subjects related to science and technology. What can science tell us about the fury of our Angry Earth? Can science do anything to protect us? Might we one day be able to predict the quakes? Or are we at the mercy of the awesome power of nature? Around the world, millions live under the threat of an earthquake disaster. In the last century, more than 1 million people died in earthquakes. Over the next century, it is feared that number could increase ten-fold. Why? Because Earthquakes don't kill people. Buildings do. And urban populations are increasing so fast that we now have 'mega-cities'. We discover the seismic vulnerability of some of the world's mega cities and the threat posed to millions of people all over the world.

Explorers See Greenland's Glaciers Like Never Before | National Geographic

04:08
“Usually if it's been done, I'm not too interested in it.” That’s according to National Geographic grantee Eddie Kisfaludy, a marine biologist, pilot, and extreme data collector. And that’s how he found himself flying a tiny helicopter 8,000 miles over some of the most remote regions on Earth, including Greenland’s most epic landscapes. With his company SciFly, Eddie gathers data from some of the most intense and remote environments on the planet. He gives that data to people who need it, like the scientists and government agencies making decisions that impact our planet. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe ➡ Watch all clips of Expedition Raw here: http://bit.ly/WatchmoreExpeditionRaw ➡ Get More Expedition Raw on Youtube: http://bit.ly/NGExpeditionRaw About Expedition Raw: Surprises, challenges, and amazing behind-the-scenes moments captured by National Geographic explorers in the field. Get More National Geographic: Official Site: http://bit.ly/NatGeoOfficialSite Facebook: http://bit.ly/FBNatGeo Twitter: http://bit.ly/NatGeoTwitter Instagram: http://bit.ly/NatGeoInsta We spoke with Eddie about his trip. Q: You were excited for this whole trip but you had a special affection for Greenland. Can you tell us why? A: Planning for this trip, Greenland was totally mysterious. All I could really tell is from looking at satellite imagery of the island and seeing these long fjords covered with this turquoise-blue water, with icebergs everywhere. It looked like a place I'd never been. The unknown to me was the most attractive part. Q: Why isn't there more information or footage of these areas? A: It's really hard to get to. If you can get there, the weather is usually horrible. There is a low-pressure system that sits south of Iceland, halfway between Greenland and Europe, that swirls bad weather constantly. We got really lucky because of how perfect the weather was. Q: Tell us about what you saw in Greenland. A: The most awe-inspiring thing we saw was big calving events by glaciers. It is absolutely quiet, then all of a sudden you can hear the ice start to fall apart, and it sounds just thunderous. You can't help but realize that Greenland is melting. And as we're flying, we look down at these melt pools, where we see water pooling up and it disappears down a hole. It’s the most beautiful blues I have ever seen—brilliant, turquoise pools of water. But they absorb heat. The more melt pools you have, the quicker Greenland is melting. As Greenland melts, you have to wonder where is all this water going? It's going right into the ocean. Q: How did you feel flying over places that might not be there much longer? A: Watching an entire island melt in a way that is unprecedented makes you realize that we are in a very fragile place. It's important for us to be able to capture images of an area that is so unique, a place that is so difficult to get to, to help inspire people about what climate change really is. Q: What else can Greenland tell us about the global climate? A: Because the atmosphere of Greenland is so clean you can think of the ice cap as a huge filter, where it'll catch dirt, dust, or debris in the atmosphere; it's going to settle out onto the snow. The biggest source of carbon in the world is from burning fossil fuels and as that goes up in the atmosphere. It's settling out in the ocean but also in Greenland, into the ice. This has been going on for a very long time. Geologists can go up, drill down, and they can see how the carbon levels have changed in the world over time. You can see when there were big asteroids that hit the planet or a volcano erupted. The ice has this record. Greenland is on the forefront of climate change. We need to understand what is going on up there so we can make better decisions for our planet. Our planet depends on the science that is happening up in Greenland. BBC Documentary Featuring Adani’s Solar Power Plant National Geographic

40:47
National Geographic Megastructures - Featuring Adani’s Solar Power Plant- BBC Documentary History Adani Group: Adani Group is an Indian multinational conglomerate company headquartered in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. Its diversified businesses include resources, logistics, agribusiness and energy sectors.[5] The Group is the largest port developer and operator in India with Mundra Port being the country’s largest commercial port. It owns Fortune, India’s largest edible oil brand through a joint venture with Wilmar International in Singapore.[6] The Flagship Company of the Adani group is Adani Enterprises Limited. In April 2014, it added the 4th unit of 660 MW at its Tiroda Power plant, making Adani power the largest private power producer of the country. In 2015, Adani was ranked India's most trusted infrastructure brand by The Brand Trust Report 2015.[7] The company was founded in 1988 as a commodity trading business. First generation entrepreneur Gautam Adani is the founder & chairman of Adani Group. According to Mr Gautam Adani,The Group was created with a vision of ‘Nation Building’ by developing assets of national economic significance. This reflects in the choice of businesses the group has entered and developed over the years Solar power https://goo.gl/h5trfZ Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics (PV), or indirectly using concentrated solar power. Concentrated solar power systems use lenses or mirrors and tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight into a small beam. Photovoltaic cells convert light into an electric current using the photovoltaic effect.[1] The International Energy Agency projected in 2014 that under its "high renewables" scenario, by 2050, solar photovoltaics and concentrated solar power would contribute about 16 and 11 percent, respectively, of the worldwide electricity consumption, and solar would be the world's largest source of electricity. Most solar installations would be in China and India.[2] Photovoltaics were initially solely used as a source of electricity for small and medium-sized applications, from the calculator powered by a single solar cell to remote homes powered by an off-grid rooftop PV system. As the cost of solar electricity has fallen, the number of grid-connected solar PV systems has grown into the millions and utility-scale solar power stations with hundreds of megawatts are being built. Solar PV is rapidly becoming an inexpensive, low-carbon technology to harness renewable energy from the Sun. The current largest photovoltaic power station in the world is the 850 MW Longyangxia Dam Solar Park, in Qinghai, China. Commercial concentrated solar power plants were first developed in the 1980s. The 392 MW Ivanpah installation is the largest concentrating solar power plant in the world, located in the Mojave Desert of California. Megastructures : Megastructures is a documentary television series appearing on the National Geographic Channel in the United States and the United Kingdom, Channel 5 in the United Kingdom, France 5 in France, and 7mate in Australia. Each episode is an educational look of varying depth into the construction, operation, and staffing of various structures or construction projects, but not ordinary construction products. Generally containing interviews with designers and project managers, it presents the problems of construction and the methodology or techniques used to overcome obstacles. In some cases (such as the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge and Petronas Towers) this involved the development of new materials or products that are now in general use within the construction industry. Global Warming. The thicker layer of greenhouse gases traps more heat. This result in an increase in average temperature of the earth and the earth becomes hotter and hotter. This is called global warming. If we do not take steps to reduce global warming, it will lead to loss of human lives, plants and animals. Steps to reduce global warming: Plant more trees. Reduce, reuse and recycle. Use less hot water. Turn off electronic devices when not in use. Spread awareness. Come on everybody, let us reduce global warming.

Geo Data Portal: Translating Climate Data for Geographic Analysis

01:01:47
http://gallery.usgs.gov/videos/590 The Geo Data Portal (GDP) was developed with support from the National Climate Change and Wildlife Science Center (NCCWSC) in response to the wide practice in environmental modeling of accessing and processing climate model data. The GDP platform assists scientists and resource managers in accessing and using downscaled climate projections and other modeling resources. The GDP provides easily downloadable calculations and information for various regions, climate factors, and time periods of interest. These capabilities will be described during this webinar, along with future plans for disseminating other relevant data products across the NCCWSC and Climate Science Center network. This webinar was conducted as a part of the "NCCWSC Climate Change Science and Management Webinar Series", through a partnership between the National Climate Change and Wildlife Science Center (NCCWSC) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's National Conservation Training Center (NCTC).

Parker Solar Probe--Mission Overview

03:32
Parker Solar Probe will swoop to within 4 million miles of the sun's surface, facing heat and radiation like no spacecraft before it. Launching in 2018, Parker Solar Probe will provide new data on solar activity and make critical contributions to our ability to forecast major space-weather events that impact life on Earth. In order to unlock the mysteries of the corona, but also to protect a society that is increasingly dependent on technology from the threats of space weather, NASA will send Parker Solar Probe to touch the Sun. In 2017, the mission was renamed for Eugene Parker, the S. Chandrasekhar Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus, Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Chicago. In the 1950s, Parker proposed a number of concepts about how stars--including our Sun- -give off energy. He called this cascade of energy the solar wind, and he described an entire complex system of plasmas, magnetic fields, and energetic particles that make up this phenomenon. Parker also theorized an explanation for the superheated solar atmosphere, the corona, which is - contrary to what was expected by physics laws -- hotter than the surface of the sun itself. This is the first NASA mission that has been named for a living individual.
