It is a single seat, high wing, strut-braced, twin-engine, ultralight aircraft taildragger in a pusher configuration. The craft was offered in kit form by Kolb Aircraft located in Phoenixville Pennsylvania. The Flyer features a welded 4130 chromoly steel pilot enclosure mated to an aluminum boom tube. The wings were made from aluminum tube construction using standard tube and ladder construction. The wings and tail sections were covered in standard aircraft covering materials. The two Chrysler West Bend or Solo single cylinder engines were mounted on a beam running behind the pilot. The Kolb Flyer was one of the first of the early ultralights that was strut braced and featured true three axis control. The Kolb Flyer evolved into the Kolb UltraStar and then into the Kolb FireStar and FireFly models which are now produced by Kolb Aircraft in Kentucky. Kolb Flyer Specifications. Not happy with the way the plane rolls, im gonna try to put disable elevon on a switch to get better high speed rolls, elevons are great for low speed roll authority.

One unusual ultralight aircraft nestled in the homebuilt area of Sun N Fun's Paradise City, was one truly fascinating aircraft, the twin engine, 140 lbs. Lightning Bug! Sun ‘n Fun Paradise City volunteers and officials evidently agreed that Lightning Bug was too fun and too novel to be sequestered. Out it came to a prominent position right in front of the area headquarters tent. In this central spot, this sweet little flying creation steadily drew a crowd. “What on Earth is that?” asked plenty of people at Sun ‘n Fun. We completely agree with their question as that’s about what we said, too, after stumbling on this fun little design. It was at first tied down in transient parking in the Ultralight Area called Paradise City at the Lakeland show. However, in a day or so, it got moved to a very prominent location by the PC Volunteer Tent because many attendees couldn’t find it hiding behind a row of porta-potties. After the move, people were crawling all over it, almost literally. If you could not make the show, we are pleased to present Brian Austein’s homemade, one-of-a-kind, not-for-sale ultralight using model airplane building techniques. He flew it at the show to prove this is not simply a showpiece. One look at the photos ought to explain but what you can’t see is that Lightning Bug weighs a mere 140 pounds and employs unorthodox control surfaces. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a three axis flying machine, ‘er… ultralight vehicle that comes in an amazing 114 pounds under the tight weight limit of Part 103. The work of Brian Austein, Lighting Bug is not planned as a product. Brian grew up flying model aircraft, radio control airplanes. He wanted to see if he could make a low-cost aircraft that could be powered by twin engines that are tiny compared to most ultralights but very large for a radio-controls model. Some years ago RC models with spans of a few inches to a 3-4 feet went fully electric. Larger ones, up to 50% scale said Brian, use the engines he mounted on Lightning Bug. His investment, not counting the value of his time: about $3,000, $1,000 for each engine and $1,000 for his novel airframe that uses elevons and other moveable surfaces you simply don’t see on, well… “normal” aircraft. I was completely impressed not only by the extreme creativity in assembling an aircraft with looks unique to any I’ve ever seen, but to Brian’s thoughtful consideration and by the quality of the workmanship. A variety of materials were used to build this head-turning aircraft. Welded steel provides the basic structure with foam core and aluminum spar wings. Control surfaces are covered with see-through monokote as you’d find on many model aircraft, again hewing to Brian’s background. Lightning Bug has a tiny 19.5-foot span comprised of two eight foot wings and a 3.5-foot center section. The canard up front allows Brian to rotate off the ground more controllably but when he says it “Will Not Stall,” he does not refer to the canard preventing a break. On top of everything else about this awesome, singular product, it is equipped with “auto pilot.” Is your head starting to spin? Mine sure was. A couple years ago, Brian developed the Woodpecker and proceeded to win several awards at Oshkosh, he reported. That machine was not sold either showing this is a fascination for achieving super-affordable and novel aircraft that meld full-scale, man-carrying aircraft to techniques employed in assembling RC aircraft. From the constant attention Lightning Bug generated, it is obvious I was not the only one wowed by this young man’s design prowess and his unconventional approach. Flite Test Kraken Electric Twin Flying Wing

My interest in flying wings has finally taken me to the Flite Test KRAKEN, a twin electric wing. Flite Test has produced a number of interesting models and videos of their products. The Kraken is the scaled up twin electric version of their Versa Wing. Flite Test offers a limited production Speed Build kit version of this model or you can download the free plans ans build the Kraken from scratch. Flite Test has a Kraken instructional build video, which is very good. As Josh Bixler of Flite test says, "If you an build the Versa Wing, you can build the Kraken." The video takes the builder step by step through the process. I studied the build video quite extensively before downloading the free plans and began building my Kraken from scratch. Ten (10) foam boards from the local Dollar Tree, a glue gun with 12" sticks and some heavy duty Scotch brand packaging tape and I was ready to go. I followed the build video and plans with the exception of the wire under carriage and external battery mount. I left off the wheels to permit some flexibility in the areas where I could fly as this is a slow fly model. Also, with the internal box spar and airfoil allowed for a battery compartment in the center section. I designed a removable skid cradle which I could attach various cargo, FPV or release modules. The Kraken build was uneventful. The build video by Josh and Josh is very, very good. If you were to follow their helpful tips and instructions, you should have very little trouble with this build. It took me only two days to build the model. I ordered the motor Swappable firewalls and control horns. The firewalls are pre-marked for 16 mm x 19 mm electric motor mounts and even when used in the scratch built engine nacelles from the plans, they fit perfectly. Once completed, I was very surprised to find how strong and light weight a wing of this size turned out. It has a 71" wing span, but is incredibly light. During my initial test flights, since I built it as a slow fly motor glider, I merely held onto to the center section trailing edge, applied 3/4 throttle and gave the model a slight nose up shove into the air. The Kraken had a smooth and positive climbed out. Probably the most trouble I had was programming my DX-7 for differential throttle. It was a bit of trial and error and searching YouTube instructional vids but I finally got it done. While not essential, differential throttle or separating power commands to each motor allows for yaw control in this elevon model. This permits steering control while on the ground and yaw control in the air. I also set-up counter rotating propellers, the left motor turning counter-clockwise and the right motor turning clockwise. The conventional twin engined counter rotation calls for the propellers to turn inward toward the center section, while the P-38 Lightning was set up with the propellers turning outward, away from the center fuselage pod. I found very little difference with either setup for normal flying, however the conventional set-up allows for a crisp yaw command. If you choose to use differential throttle, it is very interesting to see an elevon control flying wing doing a vertical wing over maneuver without rudder input. My initial flights with a 5100 mAh 3S 35c battery have been in excess of 15 minutes at 2/3rd throttle for cruising. I designed a simple large cargo pod which merely hook / loop tapes to the bottom of the skid cradle. A single servo is used to release the bottom door, which flips open to release lightweight material. In this test, I gathered surrounding ground covering material for some organic confetti. It actually worked pretty well. I have a detachable wheeled cargo plate in mind along with lighting the cargo pod for some evening flying. More testing to come.

This is just a little C47 flat foamy I threw together for fun..that and a local multi engine flyin. It has a 63 inch wingspan and weighs about 1 and 3/4 pounds. it flies like a feather.. I used the outlines from a M.A.N. plans I had bought, and then just added in some tri stock for leading edge of the wing, and a short carbon wing spar (30inch)..I also put some fiber reinforced strapping tape on the bottom of the 1/2 foam wing. The fuselage is half inch and the tail is the thinner FAN FOLD FOAM used in 3D foamies... its all real simple and low tech. right down to the brushed on hobby paint. It was a fun distraction between the big gas birds at the event..this film was taken the next day. there was alittle wind from time to time, but it was settling down near the end of the filming.

"After a long winter and spring dodging the Utah weather," SkyCraft Airplanes announced that their SD-1 Minisport, "has completed flight testing successfully, meeting all the performance requirements needed for SLSA Certification." The Orem, Utah company reported, "The plane was found to have good longitudinal and latitudinal stability and exhibited no issues with flutter, vibrations, or dangerous stall/spin tendencies. " SkyCraft representatives said they were able to verify the performance specifications for the SD-1 achieved by its Czech designers. Minisport has been flying in Europe since 2007 when the airplane and company were created by designer Igor Spacek. The U.S. team first contemplated a kit aircraft — SD-1 Minisport is constructed significantly of wood making it a great project for some craftsmen — but later elected to go the fully-built Special LSA route. One part of meeting ASTM's comprehensive standards set is flight testing. "In addition to ensuring the aircraft's compliance with ASTM standards," said SkyCraft's Director of Marketing Paul Glavin, "the flight test program focused on the pilot experience of flying the SD-1 Minisport." After completing the series, he added, "Based on flight testing reports, SkyCraft will be updating the interior layout of the aircraft prior to delivery to customers." The U.S. team preparing Minisport uses the same engine as the Czech group. SD-1 is powered by Hirth's F-23 engine that produces 50 horsepower and boasts dual ignition, fuel injection, and a 1,000 hour time between overhaul. SD-1 Minisport is available in either tailwheel or tricycle gear configurations. We've followed SkyCraft's Minisport in earlier articles and will keep our eye on this handsome, affordable single seat SLSA candidate. It is available in either tricycle gear or taildragger configuration. "The most significant change will be the elimination of the MGL gauges for a more fully integrated Dynon setup," observed SkyCraft. "This cleaner instrument panel will make the SD-1 more user-friendly and will also allow the aircraft to take advantage of more of the Dynon glass cockpit capabilities." Reps noted that they believe this change makes the airplane safer since the Dynon SkyView is backed up with a two-hour emergency power supply. "SkyCraft is committed to delivering a safe, comfortable, and fun flying experience, and we are now fully confident that the SD-1 Minisport provides exactly this," added Glavin. "Completion of flight testing is a significant achievement in SkyCraft's ultimate goal of certifying the SD-1 Minisport as a SLSA aircraft. With the performance, design, and production of the SD-1 all ASTM-compliant, SkyCraft is very close to achieving its goal." We plan to follow SkyCraft closely, partly due to the airplane's very affordable price at less than $60,000 and because it is a rare single seat entry. Keeping in mind that what you will be watching is the European version rather than the SkyCraft U.S. version, the following video gives you some idea how well the SD-1 Minisport performs on its 50 horsepower Hirth engine. The UltraVair is made from 2 of the 6 cylinders of a General Motors Corvair engine - thus the "1/3 is greater." It produces 35 hp at 3500 rpm using stock pistons, crankshaft and camshaft. "The stock Corvair has hydraulic lifters and strong through-bolts holding the case halves together. It also has the exhaust ports facing down and a removable top cover and oil pan. No special head or case boring is needed. This eliminates expense and the removal of material that weakens engine components." After a few delays and some last-minute changes to the fuel system so that the engine could draw fuel up the 8-inches between the tank-bottom and the spraybar, the first flight of the pulsejet-powered World Models TameCat has happened. It's sure not lacking in power (10lbs thrust versus 7lbs flying weight) and it was damned fast! Despite being a mild-mannered pussy-cat when powered by a regular glow-engine it's very apparent that under full jet-thrust I'm going to have to cut back the elevator throw a little. The TameCat is such a big pussy to fly once the power's off though - landing is a breeze! The engine switched to lean-mode short-cycling when I pulled high-G's in the second turn so I'll have ti increase the fuel pressure some more and reduce the size of the fuel-metering jet so as to reduce the effect of hi-G's on fuel-flow. With luck, I'll get the changes done and fly it again tomorrow! Don't miss that video -- subscribe now. Viking Aircraft Engines is using Honda L15-series car engines for their conversion to an experimental aircraft application. You may buy them new from Honda but most customers opt for used engines that have been used in cars for less than 6 months or 5000 miles. After they leave the Viking factory assembly line they can be considered as a rebuilt/new aircraft engine. The result is an engine with the latest technology for the lowest price available. The fuel economy is world class; the power to weight ratio is superb. The quality of the engines is as good as Honda gets it and to ensure reliability, Viking performs dynamometers testing combined with thousands of hours of in fight testing. Honda builds these engines in thousands per year (unlike other aircraft engine manufacturers) with enough parts readily available and, more important: for a reasonable price. This guarantees the customer benefits from the absolute latest in engine technology for the best price. The cheapest planes out there are not always the best ones, so we’ve created a list of some dependable if sometimes offbeat models for you to consider. Used airplanes are more abundant than ever, and finding a good cheap one is relatively easy. Finding an affordable plane that doesn’t need some work is not so easy. The reality of airplane ownership is that it costs money, and the more plane you get, the more money you’re going to spend. That said, there are exceptions to this rule, planes with lots of capability that aren’t expensive to buy. But the bad news is, those exceptions are usually associated with multi-engine aircraft with exorbitant costs, usually involving engine updates, just waiting for you down the line. Despite what you may think, there are ways to fly without busting the family budget. True, you won’t be aviating at 170 knots in a shiny new, near-million-dollar G36 Bonanza or Cessna TTx, but you can stay in the air for considerably less than the national debt of Peru. Some pilots simply rent, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but the apparent low price can be deceiving. By some measures, the hourly price can be stratospheric because it includes allowances for every fixed expense—tiedown/hangar, insurance, taxes, depreciation, maintenance—but unless you’re in a club, the airplane won’t cost you a cent when you’re not flying it. Another method is to scale back your expectations and fly in an absolute minimum airplane. Since most FBOs don’t rent the oldies but goodies, you’ll be forced to buy, but you may be surprised at how little you’ll pay for a rock-bottom, economy machine that’s airworthy with no damage history. Don’t expect fancy interiors, new paint or exotic radios in this class. You very well may find serviceable machines, however, with hundreds or even thousands of hours of life left in them. Here’s a summary of 10 production airplanes that are often available for minimum bucks. These are all extremely entry-level, bare-bones, stick-and-rudder airplanes that are intended to provide basic transportation and little more. For the most part, you can forget considerations of speed, climb, range and payload, but these airplanes will keep you in the sky at the absolute minimum cost. For cost reasons, all the new crop of LSAs are excluded. Similarly, at the opposite end of the scale, there are no ultralights or powered parachutes here. If you’re willing to scour the pages of Trade-A-Plane on a regular basis, watch the bulletin boards at local airports and bide your time until the right opportunity comes along, you just may find a basic flying machine at a surprisingly low price. We’ve deliberately avoided setting hard dollar limits for this survey, but most of the models below should be available for less than $20,000.

Having your very own jet to rocket around the sky would be so cool, right? C'mon ... who wouldn't love that? The trouble is affording one of the darn things and then paying through the nose to fuel and maintain it. Well, the good folks at Sonex Aircraft have long prided themselves on (and have achieved the goal of) offering modestly priced airplane kits that the rest of us can afford. How about a jet airpane (kit) for less than many ready-to-fly LSA? Yep, Sonex says "base price" is $130,000 and while that may still be a chunk of change for many, you have to admit it is reasonably affordable as jets go. Those of you planning to attend Sun 'n Fun 2015 — and I hope that is many of you! — will be able to check out SubSonex JXS-2 Personal Jet and you can catch its first-ever airshow act. You may have seen it fly at their home field of Oshkosh but you ain't seen nothin' yet! After being absent since 2006, Sonex Aircraft is returning to Sun 'n Fun with an official exhibitor presence at the 2015 event in Lakeland, Florida. Look for the company's distinctive yellow airplanes in the North East Exhibit area, booth NE-29 where they will have an AeroVee Turbo-powered Sonex Sport Acro along with SubSonex. The Wisconsin kit manufacturer also plans several forums including one for prospective SubSonex Personal Jet owners (on Friday, April 24th). SubSonex JSX-2 is available as a kit aircraft and the company noted the first seven customer kits were delivered in early 2015, with production slots still open for delivery by year-end. The microjet aircraft is powered by the PBS TJ-100 engine, producing 247 pounds of thrust. It features a larger cockpit, larger instrument panel, fully retractable landing gear, a BRS whole airframe emergency parachute, higher fuel capacity in a rotationally molded cross-linked polyethylene fuel cell, easily removable wings, and a more sculpted and aesthetically pleasing nose section. Sonex announced that their SubSonex Air Show, flown by renowned performer Bob Carlton, will make its worldwide debut at the 2015 Sun 'n Fun show, saying that Bob is scheduled to perform on Tuesday, April 20th and Sunday, April 26th. The company said their SubSonex air show routine will feature maneuvers previously unheard of in a jet aerobatic routine. "The SubSonex microjet is capable of speeds of 300 mph," said Bob Carlton, "and can perform all the classic aerobatics, including maneuvers like tailslides, normally considered taboo in a jet. However, it's not just about high speed. With its incredibly wide speed range, the SubSonex can turn tight and stay close so that air show spectators aren't waiting for a turnaround." Sold only as a quick-build kit, SubSonex includes almost everything required to fly with the exception of avionics and paint. Available options for the JXS-2 include MGL Avionics' iEFIS touchscreen, a Mountain High oxygen system, Aveo PowerBurst LED position and strobe lighting, heated leather upholstery, cabin heat, and a Triton TC 167 enclosed trailer modified to transport the SubSonex. The Colomban Cri-Cri ('cricket') is the smallest twin-engined manned aircraft in the world, designed in the early 1970s by French aeronautical engineer Michel Colomban. At only 4.9 m (16.1 ft) wingspan and 3.9 m (12.8 ft) length, it is a single-seater. There are approximately 30 Cri-cri aircraft in airworthy condition in the U.S. and over 100 around the world as of 2003. Kennedy confidently predicted in 1961 that the United States would land a man on the Moon by the end of the decade, the task of implementing what seemed to be a wildly ambitious goal fell to the engineers of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The success of the chosen lunar-orbit rendezvous (LOR) strategy ultimately depended on whether the astronauts could learn to safely land the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) on the Moon's surface and return into orbit to dock with the mother ship... The solution was conceived as an erector set model in the home workshop of W. Hewitt Phillips (see autobiography of W. Hewitt Phillips). The solution came in the form of the Lunar Lander Research Facility (LLRF), a training simulator that allowed NASA engineers to study the complex lunar landing process and give the Apollo astronauts critical hands-on pilot training in the LEM. Completed in 1965 at a cost of $3.5 million, the most obvious feature of the LLRF was its enormous gantry, an A-frame steel structure measuring 400 feet long by 240 feet high. The LLRF simulated lunar gravity on the LEM through an overhead partial-suspension system that counteracted all but 1/6th of the Earth's gravitational force, and allowed the vehicle to fly unobstructed within a relatively large area. The LLRF also was used as a lunar-walking simulator, with subjects walking on inclined planes while suspended by a system of slings and cables. Until the end of the Apollo program in 1972, the LLRF was used to train 24 astronauts for lunar missions, including Neil Armstrong and Edwin E. "Buzz" Aldrin, Jr., of Apollo 11, the first men to walk on the Moon. Armstrong offered what was perhaps the greatest tribute to the importance of the LLRF in the success of the Apollo program. When asked what it was like to land on the Moon, he replied: "Like Langley..." Although the end of manned lunar missions made the LLRF redundant by the early 1970s, NASA quickly found a new use for this Langley landmark, converting it into a full-scale aircraft crash test facility. Redesignated the Impact Dynamics Research Facility (IDRF), it was used to conduct important research on aircraft and other vehicles between 1974 and 2003. With no foreseen future mission need for the IDRF and with limited funding for maintenance and upkeep of such a large structure, NASA closed the facility in 2003 and it was placed on the list of buildings and structures planned for demolition at LaRC. As luck would have it, with President Bush's announcement in 2004 of the Vision for Space Exploration, NASA determined that the IDRF could be adaptively re-used to support the Agency's new Constellation Program. The facility was re-opened in 2005 to conduct landing tests associated with the development of the Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) named ORION. Ironically, the testing would be remarkably similar to the original purpose of the LLRF -- testing of the LEM. The facility was re-named the Landing Impact Research Facility (LandIR) and minor modifications were made to include installation of a new parallel winch system to support full-scale ORION testing, and replacement of an elevator. Since NASA needed the capability to determine if the ORION landing would be via land or water, a more significant modification involved installation of a new hydro-impact basin (splashdown pool) underneath the Gantry. Construction of the hydro-impact basin, which is 115 feet long, 90 feet wide and 20 feet deep, was completed in January 2011. Although the Constellation Program has since been cancelled by President Obama, the LandIR plans to continue performing impact testing since the ORION capsule will still be used to service the International Space Station. The historical significance of the LLRF and its many contributions to the U.S. space program were formally recognized when the facility was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1985...

The 1,100 kg Workhorse Surefly uses an electric quadcopter layout with two contra-rotating propellers on each corner and a range-extending petrol engine, giving it a range of 70 miles and a top speed of 70 mph. The gas engine can then be fueled quickly with petroleum for immediate onward flight. #6 Ehang184 (Ehong) Dubai’s Road & Transportation Agency plans to launch trips with the first fully-electric autonomous aerial vehicle drone starting late this summer. The Prime Minister of the UAE wants 25% of all passenger trips to be made in driver-less vehicles by 2030. This human-size drone, EHang 184, is made in China and has already flown in Dubai. Its manufacturer, Chinese drone company Ehang, showed off the 184 at last year's CES in Las Vegas after 100 successful manned test flights. EHang 184 has enough room for a small suitcase and will be controlled through 4G mobile Internet. It is able to carry a single passenger who weighs less than 220 pounds over short distances at 62 miles per hour with a fully-charged battery. #5 Hoversurf Hoversurf, comes from a Russian company that builds drones. They recently posted a video showing off its latest prototype: the Scorpion-3, a single-seat, electric-powered hoverbike that looks super awesome! The manufacturers say they wanted to combine a motorcycle with quadcopter drone technology to create “an extreme sports instrument.” The electric-borne aircraft is intended for both “amateur and professional navigators,” Hoversurf says. Though don’t expect a motorcycle’s license or even a pilot’s license to authorize you to ride one of these things. The only thing that would, in my opinion, is a willingness to have your legs amputated in the name of extreme sports. The hoverbike uses custom-built software to limit its range and velocity in order to assure a safe ride, the company says. We are wondering tho... Will they put a cage over those blades? #4 .I.F.O. jetcapsule.com Designed by italian company jet capsule, the I.F.O or ‘identified flying object’ is a proposed two seater drone/copter vehicle. the chassis, composed of a main central capsule cockpit, measures two meters in diameter and is surrounded by a carbon fiber disk with an overall dimension of 4.70 meters. #3 ProjectZero The AgustaWestland Project Zero is a hybrid tiltrotor/fan-in-wing aircraft.
