Viking Aircraft Engines is using Honda L15-series car engines for their conversion to an experimental aircraft application. You may buy them new from Honda but most customers opt for used engines that have been used in cars for less than 6 months or 5000 miles. After they leave the Viking factory assembly line they can be considered as a rebuilt/new aircraft engine. The result is an engine with the latest technology for the lowest price available. The fuel economy is world class; the power to weight ratio is superb. The quality of the engines is as good as Honda gets it and to ensure reliability, Viking performs dynamometers testing combined with thousands of hours of in fight testing. Honda builds these engines in thousands per year (unlike other aircraft engine manufacturers) with enough parts readily available and, more important: for a reasonable price. This guarantees the customer benefits from the absolute latest in engine technology for the best price. The Viking 130 is as close to a Honda Fit (called Jazz in some parts of the world) car engine as possible, retaining all of its modern features. The cooling system is run with Evans liquid cooling without a pressure system and the engines are run at 66 % of the rated RPM as designed by Honda. One of the main advantages of this engine is its low weight to power ratio compared to other engines in the market today. The fuel injection system is a GDI, gasoline direct injection. This is much like the system used in a diesel engine where fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber. Normal gasoline fuel injection systems inject fuel just before the intake port, Rotax iS and UL Power are a good example of engines using this principle. Zenith CruZer The Viking Company Zenith CruZer is faster than any other flying at 126 kts / 154 mph TAS @ 8500 ft DA. It also has the shortest take off roll of any CruZer. In fact, the airplane is so powerful; it can take off much shorter than a full fledged CH-750 STOL airplane. Advantages Some of the advantages of a Viking aircraft engine are: *Viking has a one year unconditional return policy for refund or exchange *The 2016 Honda Fit engine manual covers all engine specifics in great detail *The engines are Evans liquid cooled without pressure, no leaks or possible boiling *The engines run at only at 2/3 Honda rated RPM *The 130 is a perfect weight for the Zenith and a host of other experimental aircraft *Engines are ready to bolt to the airplane as shipped *Cowling, engine mount and propeller available along with all other accessories *The 130 will outperform all other engines with 600 lb of thrust *An inline 4 cylinder engine is not complicated, rather simplicity itself *The Viking has no separate external exhaust pipes, just a single muffler *No baffles required to direct cooling air over cylinders *All parts are available from Honda or Viking *Over 3600 reduction drive gear parts in stock, including 2700 gears *No complicated fuel return system needed *Worlds only GDI (gasoline direct injected) aircraft engine *The oil system is included within the engine, no external hoses or cooler *An unbelievably smooth running engine, your airframe and avionics will love you for that! Installations Viking engines are used and flown in a large number of aircraft ranging from Just Aircraft, Cessna, RANS, Vans RV-12 to the Zenith Aircraft CH650 and CruZer to name but a few. http://www.ultralightflyer.com Video and Audio content is Copyright © The Ultralight Flyer Video Magazine. Cri Cri - World's Smallest Twin Engine Aircraft

02:23
The Colomban Cri-Cri ('cricket') is the smallest twin-engined manned aircraft in the world, designed in the early 1970s by French aeronautical engineer Michel Colomban. At only 4.9 m (16.1 ft) wingspan and 3.9 m (12.8 ft) length, it is a single-seater. There are approximately 30 Cri-cri aircraft in airworthy condition in the U.S. and over 100 around the world as of 2003. Lightning Bug, Brian Austein's Part 103 Legal, Twin Engine Ultralight Aircraft.

One unusual ultralight aircraft nestled in the homebuilt area of Sun N Fun's Paradise City, was one truly fascinating aircraft, the twin engine, 140 lbs. Lightning Bug! Sun ‘n Fun Paradise City volunteers and officials evidently agreed that Lightning Bug was too fun and too novel to be sequestered. Out it came to a prominent position right in front of the area headquarters tent. In this central spot, this sweet little flying creation steadily drew a crowd. “What on Earth is that?” asked plenty of people at Sun ‘n Fun. We completely agree with their question as that’s about what we said, too, after stumbling on this fun little design. It was at first tied down in transient parking in the Ultralight Area called Paradise City at the Lakeland show. However, in a day or so, it got moved to a very prominent location by the PC Volunteer Tent because many attendees couldn’t find it hiding behind a row of porta-potties. After the move, people were crawling all over it, almost literally. If you could not make the show, we are pleased to present Brian Austein’s homemade, one-of-a-kind, not-for-sale ultralight using model airplane building techniques. He flew it at the show to prove this is not simply a showpiece. One look at the photos ought to explain but what you can’t see is that Lightning Bug weighs a mere 140 pounds and employs unorthodox control surfaces. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a three axis flying machine, ‘er… ultralight vehicle that comes in an amazing 114 pounds under the tight weight limit of Part 103. The work of Brian Austein, Lighting Bug is not planned as a product. Brian grew up flying model aircraft, radio control airplanes. He wanted to see if he could make a low-cost aircraft that could be powered by twin engines that are tiny compared to most ultralights but very large for a radio-controls model. Some years ago RC models with spans of a few inches to a 3-4 feet went fully electric. Larger ones, up to 50% scale said Brian, use the engines he mounted on Lightning Bug. His investment, not counting the value of his time: about $3,000, $1,000 for each engine and $1,000 for his novel airframe that uses elevons and other moveable surfaces you simply don’t see on, well… “normal” aircraft. I was completely impressed not only by the extreme creativity in assembling an aircraft with looks unique to any I’ve ever seen, but to Brian’s thoughtful consideration and by the quality of the workmanship. A variety of materials were used to build this head-turning aircraft. Welded steel provides the basic structure with foam core and aluminum spar wings. Control surfaces are covered with see-through monokote as you’d find on many model aircraft, again hewing to Brian’s background. Lightning Bug has a tiny 19.5-foot span comprised of two eight foot wings and a 3.5-foot center section. The canard up front allows Brian to rotate off the ground more controllably but when he says it “Will Not Stall,” he does not refer to the canard preventing a break. On top of everything else about this awesome, singular product, it is equipped with “auto pilot.” Is your head starting to spin? Mine sure was. A couple years ago, Brian developed the Woodpecker and proceeded to win several awards at Oshkosh, he reported. That machine was not sold either showing this is a fascination for achieving super-affordable and novel aircraft that meld full-scale, man-carrying aircraft to techniques employed in assembling RC aircraft. From the constant attention Lightning Bug generated, it is obvious I was not the only one wowed by this young man’s design prowess and his unconventional approach. Bravo, Brian! http://www.ultralightflyer.com Video and Audio content is Copyright © The Ultralight Flyer Video Magazine. Aero, Aero Expo, Aero Friedrichshafen 2018 - ES Trikes AERO Friedrichshafen where the general aviation industry is developing. With more than 600 exhibitors from 35 nations, 33,000 visitors and 600 journalists from all over the world, the AERO Friedrichshafen is the world's most important annual meeting place for the community. AERO scores points with an even more advanced concept in 2018: The E-Flight Expo at the trade fair for general aviation, which takes place from 18 to 21 April 2018 at the exhibition center in Friedrichshafen, ensures a strong focus. Fair premiere celebrates the Flight Simulator Area. The areas of Avionics Avenue, Engine Area, Pilot Training and Aerodrones / UAS Expo once again provide a strong professional offer. In addition, the rotorcraft get strong boost. At AERO, the focus is on a wide variety of aircraft: from gliders to ultralight planes, helicopters and business jets. An increasingly important topic is unmanned drones, which attract more and more attention in aviation alongside the new VTOL (vertical take off and landing) division. Exhibition boss Klaus Wellmann and project manager Roland Bosch are pleased that at the end of October 2017 the exhibition space for the AERO 2018 is already booked very well. "Global aviation companies are optimistic. In response to the increasing attention paid to electromobility, the E-Flight Expo will continue to grow at the AERO 2018, "says Roland Bosch, assessing the situation ahead of the fair. The AERO 2018 impresses with its diversity: from the unmanned civilian drone to ultralight, single-engine and multi-engine aircraft with piston engines, helicopters, gyrocopters and turboprops to multi-jet jets, you can see everything. Innovative propulsion systems, future-proof avionics, aviation services and accessories are further focal points of the AERO 2018, as well as offers for pilot training and information on further career opportunities in general aviation. Several successful special exhibitions will be continued at AERO in the coming year: The E-Flight Expo has long since established itself and, with alternative drive concepts, is once again taking place in its own hall. Corporations like Siemens are specifically involved in the development of their own electric aircraft projects. In addition, first electrically powered taxi drones are being tested in the test. This shows the growing importance of electric flight not only in general aviation in the future. http://www.ultralightflyer.com Video and Audio content is Copyright © The Ultralight Flyer Video Magazine. Aero-TV: Profiles in Aviation - Rob Bach and His Pietenpol

03:49
Vintage Aircraft Enthusiast Rob Bach Introduces the Pietenpol Air Camper Following World War I, civil aviation experienced an extraordinary surge in public curiosity that ignited pilots, mechanics and enthusiasts alike. Hundreds rushed to participate in this Golden Age of Aviation, leading to a tremendous increase in technological advancements. One such participant was Bernard H. Pietenpol, a self-taught airplane designer from Spring Valley Cherry Grove, Minnesota. Considered the Father of Homebuilt Aircraft, Pietenpol constructed his first homebuilt airplane in 1923, using a Ford Model T engine. He did not, however, gain world-wide recognition until April of 1930; Pietenpol set out for Minneapolis with two Ford Model A powered airplanes in order to prove to the editor of Modern Mechanics, now Popular Mechanics, that an auto engine powered aircraft could indeed fly. The editor was so impressed by the aircraft that the Pietenpol Air Camper was featured as the magazines cover story. With the increased exposure, the airplane became the favorite homebuilt of its day. Pietenpol intentionally designed the aircraft with the average 1930s American in mind; all materials used were readily available in local stores and the aircraft could be easily built with a minimum amount of tools. The aircraft was constructed from spruce and plywood, powered by a converted Ford Model A 4 cylinder engine. Due to the downward thrust of the propeller, the aircraft had a short take off run, allowing the Golden Age pilots to fly it from most off-airport fields. Aero-TV: Oma Sud's Skycar - A Unique Italian Light Twin

04:40
A Truly Unique Light Twin... Italian Style! One of the more unusual new designs at Oshkosh in 2010 was OMA SUD's prototype Skycar. This new light twin from Italy is certified in Europe, and FAA certification is expected in December. The Italian designed and built OMA SUD Skycar offers the market several innovative features. The front doors were designed large and wide to allow easy access to the cabin ... almost reminiscent of the Cessna 177 Cardinal. The airplane has a twin boom tail to accommodate a large rear access door. Think C130 without the cargo ramp. The airplane is easy to get into thanks to the large door. Access to the rear seat is much easier than your typical single or twin. Up front, the aircraft is equipped with Chelton EIFS 3D Synthetic Vision and Garmin GNS-430 Nav/Comms. This twin pusher design has 5 seats in the air taxi configuration and can be reconfigured for cargo and for medical missions. For medical missions, a stretcher can slide in from the huge rear door. OMA SUD plans to market several variants including a surveillance, SAR, medical evacuation, light cargo, executive and air taxi configuration. The twin engine Skycar features all metal construction with 200 horsepower Lycoming Model IO-360-C1E6 engine and Hartzell two bladed propeller. The Skycar features a large 240 cubic foot cabin volume (compared to around 180 cubic ft for the typical six place twin). The company has 200 hours on the prototype that was on display at Oshkosh. The company has plans to build the airplane in Italy, then ship aircraft to the United States by cargo container. Once the aircraft are received they will be assembled and delivered to the customer.

What we know about IAF’s upgrade plans with made in India aircraft

05:50
The Ministry of Defence intends to procure fighter aircraft for the IAF that are “made in India”. A request for information (RFI) was issued by the Indian Air Force on April 7, 2018. The proposal is to procure approximately 110 fighter aircraft. The procurement should have a maximum of 15 per cent aircraft in flyaway state and the remaining 85 per cent will have to be made in India by a strategic partner/Indian production agency. The aircraft are intended as day-and-night capable, all-weather multi-role combat aircraft. The new RFI has been issued to the six contenders of the scrapped MMRCA project. These are F/A-18 “Super Hornet”, F-16 (Block To), Gripen-E, Mig-35, Eurofighter and Rafale. The project cost will be over $206. RFI response must be sent by early July 2018. Thereafter, request for proposal (RFP) is expected to be issued within six-eight months. The initial delivery of the aircraft in flyaway condition from the original equipment manufacturer would commence within 36 months and the entire delivery will have to be completed within 60 months from contract signing. The development follows an abandoned plan to buy 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA). The the original equipment manufacturers will have to specify the scope of depth and range of technology transfer. Here’s my assessment following informed discussions: • The number of 110 (fighter aircraft) was reached at basically to keep it less than 126 aircraft. This is to avoid going to the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) for approval again. The DAC has already approved procurement of 126 aircraft. • The IAF will retire 11 squadrons of Mig-21 and Mig-27 aircraft by 2022. This corresponds to approximately 200 aircraft. From 2027 to 2032, nine squadrons of Mig 29 and Jaguars will be retired. This would correspond to approximately 162 aircraft (one squadron has 18 aircraft). In effect, the IAF would need 362 (162 plus 200) aircraft, by 2032. These numbers would be required to retain the present strength of 32 squadrons. The IAF has pitched for 42 squadrons to face a “collusive threat” from Pakistan and China. This is not likely to be accepted by the government due to cost implications. • It is probable that the government will clear another urgent procurement of 36 Rafale. This would be due to cost factor reduction to only 60 per cent of the first batch of Rafale aircraft. Maintenance facilities have been initially procured for two bases. The same would be sufficient to support another two squadrons (36 aircraft). • The overall picture is as follows. The IAF will need a total of 362 fighter aircraft by 2032, to maintain the present strength of 32 fighter squadrons. These numbers would consist of 76 Rafale plus 110 (fresh RFI) in addition to 176 indigenous light combat aircraft (LCA). The figures are broad-based but indicative of likely accruals. • The previous MMRCA evaluation (from 2007 to 2012) for five years will be the base for fresh evaluation. • The RFI will be utilised to establish the minimum QR. • No evaluation for Rafale and Eurofighter, which had passed selection during the last MMRCA selections. • “Delta Evaluation” norms will be followed. This implies that items in which they had failed earlier will be reassessed. • Grippen E was not evaluated and only the C and D versions were assessed. F-16 block to will be evaluated. F/A 18 is the same as offered earlier. Mig-35 does not seem to be in the competitions • The procurement will follow the G2G process. • The IAF will give the choice of aircraft and the government will select the “strategic partner”. • Price will be an overriding factor. • There is no constraint of single or twin engine. The QR will be the prime consideration. The selection could be of a single engine or twin engine or both. • Finally, considering the overall factors, including pricing and QR criteria, in my view, the Grippen E and F/A – 18 Super Hornet could be the front-runners. The Indian Navy is also inclined to favour the F/A – 18 for deck operations. Their requirement is for 50 aircraft. This shows the growing importance of electric flight not only in general aviation in the future. http://www.ultralightflyer.com Video and Audio content is Copyright © The Ultralight Flyer Video Magazine. c47 foamy rc airplane electric

02:43
This is just a little C47 flat foamy I threw together for fun..that and a local multi engine flyin. It has a 63 inch wingspan and weighs about 1 and 3/4 pounds. it flies like a feather.. I used the outlines from a M.A.N. plans I had bought, and then just added in some tri stock for leading edge of the wing, and a short carbon wing spar (30inch)..I also put some fiber reinforced strapping tape on the bottom of the 1/2 foam wing. The fuselage is half inch and the tail is the thinner FAN FOLD FOAM used in 3D foamies... its all real simple and low tech. right down to the brushed on hobby paint. It was a fun distraction between the big gas birds at the event..this film was taken the next day. there was alittle wind from time to time, but it was settling down near the end of the filming.
