Drug Interactions | 5 Tips You Should Do To Avoid Them

04:35
Drug or medication interactions can happen to anyone taking medicines. This weeks video is about why drugs interact and avoiding them. All my patients seem to know the rule about not drinking when you're on antibiotics - the trouble is, it isn't a rule! In fact, it's safe to drink some alcohol when you're taking most kinds of antibiotics (the antibiotic you should never drink with is metronidazole, also known as Flagyl®). Yet there are many possible interactions between commonly prescribed medicines with other medicines, supplements and even food that very few people seem to have heard of. So this weeks video will explain why they happen, and what everyone should do to avoid them. This video was sponsored by Dr Fox (Online Doctor & Pharmacy): https://www.doctorfox.co.uk HOW TO MINIMISE THE RISK OF INTERACTIONS: It isn't realistic to expect patients to memorise every possible interaction for every medication. But the following tips can go a long way in reducing problems: 1. Know why you are taking each medication Drug names are often hard to pronounce, difficult to remember, and easy to mix up. An error when you list your drugs could mean a potential interaction will go unnoticed. However, if you tell a health care professional that you're taking a medication followed by why you take it, he or she is more likely to realise what medication you take. 2. Know how to take the drug It's important to learn whether to take your medication with food, on an empty stomach or to avoid certain types of food at the same time you take the medication. If you’re not taking the medication correctly it can reduce the absorption and effectiveness or even cause irritation of your stomach lining. 3. Pharmacies don't have access to your medical records Let your pharmacy know all the medication you take. Pharmacies don’t have access to your medical records when dispensing. So if you’ve been started on any new medication let the pharmacist know when they give you your medication. They can then give you any useful tips that will help you get the most out of your medicines 4. Supplements, herbal remedies and over the counter medicines also interact with medication. Some of the most serious drug interactions involve prescription medications and supplements or herbal remedies. If you're purchasing these then it's likely that your healthcare professional will not be aware you are taking them. Always include these in your medication list when giving a medication history. 5. Talk to your pharmacist I always ask patients to bring in all their medicines, so either a list or actually bring them into the pharmacy. This includes the prescribed medicines, over the counter medicines, supplements, herbal remedies, creams....basically everything. Your pharmacist can then sit down with you, look at them and identify any potential interactions between them. They can then give you the best advice to get the most out of your medication. 6. Alcohol and its interaction with medication Whether you can drink alcohol while on medication depends entirely on what medication you’ve been prescribed. The following link has some really useful detailed information which I'd highly recommend everyone to read. https://www.drinkaware.co.uk/alcohol-facts/health-effects-of-alcohol/lifestyle/is-it-ok-to-drink-while-on-medication/ LINK REFERENCES IN VIDEO: To check interactions between medicines: https://www.drugs.com/drug_interactions.html To find out more information about a medicine or its patient information leaflet: https://www.medicines.org.uk/emc Want to see more videos about everything health and pharmacy? How to Get Rid of Intestinal Parasites (recipe)

05:30
When you hear the term "intestinal parasites," you likely think of animals or people living in third world countries. However, this is not true at all. The World Health Organization, has estimated that more than three billion people are infected around the world by intestinal parasites. It is one of the highest reasons that people seek medical attention. However, there are many more people that are suffering from these parasites and do not ever show symptoms. These parasites grow in dark, moist areas. So, within your intestinal tract, they are provided with substances that keep them alive. First, you may wonder, what is an intestinal parasite? A parasite is a small organism that gets inside of your body. Once inside, it can feed off what it finds within your body. Intestinal parasites live inside the intestines of humans. Most often, these parasites enter your body through contaminated food or drinks. Children are often the most infected, most likely since they seem to place everything in their mouths and have some sort of hatred for washing their hands. However, people of all ages are at equal risk to contract these parasites if they are exposed to unsanitary conditions. Sometimes it is hard to discover these intestinal parasites. The symptoms sometimes mirror other ailments which makes it difficult to diagnose. It is very important to keep these symptoms in mind, as if you do contract a parasite, it is important to seek treatment as quickly and as early as possible. If you believe that you may have an intestinal parasite, or are experiencing the symptoms above, you should consult your doctor to be diagnosed properly. If your doctor confirms that you, in fact, have intestinal parasites, the most important thing to do is to modify your diet immediately. You should reduce the amount of sugar and processed food that you consume. Your doctor will likely prescribe medical treatment to get rid of the parasites. However, you can also take advantage of some all-natural solutions that support your digestive system and do not cause weird or unpleasant side effects. Flax seeds and cloves are a natural remedy that has become popular for eliminating these parasites. These ingredients can control swelling, kill germs, and kill parasites. They can battle these infections prior to them developing into more serious conditions. Ingredients: - 1 tablespoon cloves - 10 tablespoons flax seeds Directions -Incorporate the ingredients in a coffee grinder to create a powder. To use as a treatment to eliminate parasites: - Take two tablespoons of the powder when you wake up. - You can mix it with warm water or even right in with your breakfast. - Take for three to seven consecutive days, take a break for the same amount of time, then begin again. - Repeat every three months or any time you feel necessary. For best results, drink plenty of water while taking this treatment. It is important to remain hydrated to keep all your bodily functions running properly. Remember to always practice good hygiene and wash your hands regularly. This will help to prevent any parasites from entering your body. Also, if you have any pets in the home, they should be de-wormed by their veterinarian, as per their recommendations. Pets can spread parasites easily when they are infected. ROSACEA Symptoms, Causes & Treatments

04:59
ROSACEA Symptoms, Causes & Treatments OVERVIEW Rosacea is a common skin condition that causes redness and visible blood vessels in your face. It may also produce small, red, pus-filled bumps. These signs and symptoms may flare up for a period of weeks to months and then diminish for a while. Rosacea can be mistaken for acne, an allergic reaction or other skin problems. Rosacea can occur in anyone. But it most commonly affects middle-aged women who have fair skin. While there's no cure for rosacea, treatments can control and reduce the signs and symptoms. If you experience persistent redness of your face, see your doctor for a diagnosis and proper treatment. SYMPTOMS Signs and symptoms of rosacea may include: • Facial redness. Rosacea usually causes a persistent redness in the central part of your face. Small blood vessels on your nose and cheeks often swell and become visible. • Swollen red bumps. Many people who have rosacea also develop pimples on their face that resemble acne. These bumps sometimes contain pus. Your skin may feel hot and tender. • Eye problems. About half of the people who have rosacea also experience eye dryness, irritation and swollen, reddened eyelids. In some people, rosacea's eye symptoms precede the skin symptoms. • Enlarged nose. Rarely, rosacea can thicken the skin on the nose, causing the nose to appear bulbous (rhinophyma). This occurs more often in men than in women. CAUSES The cause of rosacea is unknown, but it could be due to a combination of hereditary and environmental factors. Rosacea is not caused by poor hygiene. A number of factors can trigger or aggravate rosacea by increasing blood flow to the surface of your skin. Some of these factors include: • Hot drinks and spicy foods • Alcohol • Temperature extremes • Sunlight or wind • Emotions • Exercise • Cosmetics • Drugs that dilate blood vessels, including some blood pressure medications TREATMENTS Treatment for rosacea focuses on controlling signs and symptoms. Most often this requires a combination of skin care and prescription treatments. The duration of your treatment depends on the type and severity of your symptoms. Recurrence is common. Medications The type of medication your doctor prescribes depends on what signs and symptoms you're experiencing. Prescription drugs for rosacea include: Medications that reduce redness. Recent studies have shown the drug brimonidine (Mirvaso) to be effective in reducing redness. It is applied to the skin as a gel. It works by constricting blood vessels. You may see results within 12 hours after application. The effect on the blood vessels is temporary, so the medication needs to be applied regularly to maintain any improvements seen. Other topical products that have been shown to reduce redness and the pimples of mild rosacea are azelaic acid and metronidazole. With these drugs, improvements generally don't appear for three to six weeks. Oral antibiotics. Antibiotics help reduce some types of bacteria but likely mainly fight inflammation when used for this disease. Doxycycline is an antibiotic taken as a pill for moderate to severe rosacea with bumps and pustules. Other similar oral antibiotics are also sometimes used (tetracycline, minocycline, others), but their effectiveness isn't as well-supported by studies. Isotretinoin. If you have severe rosacea that doesn't respond to other therapies, your doctor may suggest isotretinoin (Amnesteem, Claravis, others). Learn How To Get Rid of Hemorrhoids Fast, Naturally and Permanently Within 2 DAYs. 100% Guaranteed Method To Cure Hemorrhoids Without Surgery. No Pain - No Bleeding. CLICK HERE ►► http://www.Hemorrhoids-Solution.betterhealthguidelines.com/Main ************************************************ Hemorrhoids are the swollen veins and blood vessels that are found inside or outside the anal sphincter. Hemorrhoids can be of two types, internal and external. Internal hemorrhoids cannot be seen or felt and hence are painless. On the other hand, external hemorrhoids can be felt and are very painful. Common Treatment For Hemorrhoids : There are several surgical painless treatments available for treating hemorrhoids. The rubber band ligation is one of the most widely used procedure to treat external hemorrhoids. In this procedure, a rubber band is placed at the base of the hemorrhoid to stop the blood flow in the vein. When the blood flow stops, the affected vein dries up and falls off. Laser treatment is also used to get rid of external hemorrhoids. The electric current in the laser helps in cutting off the blood supply to the affected vein. Hemorrhoidectomy is also a common surgical procedure used to tie and cut hemorrhoids. Another treatment is injecting medicines in the mucous membranes. It shrinks the affected blood vessels and hence, deflates the hemorrhoids. Infrared photocoagulation is yet another technique of treating hemorrhoids. Natural Treatments and Home Remedies : * Ointment: The butcher's broom ointment or balm consisting of bayberry, myrrh, goldenseal root and white oak, relieves the pain due to hemorrhoids. Application of petroleum jelly, cortisone creams and hemorrhoidal cream (such as Preparation-H) can also reduce the pain due to hemorrhoids. * Fenugreek Seeds: Soak one teaspoon of fenugreek seeds in water for 5-6 hours, add them to a cup of water and then boil the water for 5 minutes. Add sugar or honey for taste and drink it three times daily. This works great for hemorrhoids. * Bioflavonoids: Bioflavonoids help to strengthen the walls of the affected blood vessels and thus they can help decrease the inflammation by stabilizing the walls of the vessels. Most citrus fruits like lemon and orange are packed with bioflavonoids. * Water: Water is the most important part of the piles treatment at home and offers an easy way of healing hemorrhoids naturally. You are expected to drink adequate quantity of water to avoid constipation. Sufficient amount of water can help digest the food properly. * High Fiber Diet: A high fiber diet consisting of whole grains, flax seeds, green vegetables and fresh fruits, etc. help digest the food properly. This type of diet can reduce the irritation due to hemorrhoids. * Witch Hazel: You can apply witch hazel thrice a day, with an aseptic cotton pad and it will work as an astringent to decrease the bleeding, swelling and pain caused by the hemorrhoids. * Essential Oil: Various essential oils like castor oil, olive oil, mustard oil, sesame oil, almond oil, etc. can reduce the effect of constipation. These can be applied externally too, to relieve the itching sensation. * Warm Tub-water: You can sit in a tub full of warm water for 10 minutes to relieve the pain and itching sensation. * Cotton Clothing: You should wear cotton underwear to avoid itching sensation. Avoid wearing tight underwear too. * Hygiene: You should clean the anus after each bowel movement by patting gently with moist toilet paper or moistened pads to avoid further infection. * Medicines: You can take over-the-counter medicines or pain killers but if the problem does not disappear, you should consult your doctor. * Exercise: You should not lift heavy objects but you are expected to follow some specific exercises for hemorrhoids, every day so as to improve the digestive system and to improve the strength of the muscles. * Diet: You should avoid alcohol, tobacco, sodas, junk, fried, processed or fast food and you should opt for a healthy and balanced diet so as to keep yourself fit and active. * Triphala: The ayurvedic herb triphala can relieve constipation and is used as a bowel tonic. * Aloe Vera: Aloe vera gel, when applied to the area surrounding the anus, can soothe the burning sensation. * Herbal Tea: Various herbal teas like chamomile tea help to lessen the hemorrhoids. * Baking Soda: Baking soda, when applied to the area around anus, minimizes the itching sensation. * Ice: You can always apply ice packs to relieve the pain, causing numbness. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUrzd5uVapM

Typically symptoms include some combination of productive or dry cough, chest pain, fever, and trouble breathing. Severity is variable.Pneumonia is usually caused by infection with viruses or bacteria and less commonly by other microorganisms, certain medications and conditions such as autoimmune diseases. Risk factors include other lung diseases such as cystic fibrosis, COPD, and asthma, diabetes, heart failure, a history of smoking, a poor ability to cough such as following a stroke, or a weak immune system. Diagnosis is often based on the symptoms and physical examination. Chest X-ray, blood tests, and culture of the sputum may help confirm the diagnosis. The disease may be classified by where it was acquired with community, hospital, or health care associated pneumonia.Vaccines to prevent certain types of pneumonia are available. Other methods of prevention include handwashing and not smoking. Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Pneumonia believed to be due to bacteria is treated with antibiotics. If the pneumonia is severe, the affected person is generally hospitalized. Oxygen therapy may be used if oxygen levels are low.Pneumonia affects approximately 450 million people globally (7% of the population) and results in about 4 million deaths per year. Pneumonia was regarded by William Osler in the 19th century as "the captain of the men of death". With the introduction of antibiotics and vaccines in the 20th century, survival improved. Nevertheless, in developing countries, and among the very old, the very young, and the chronically ill, pneumonia remains a leading cause of death. Pneumonia often shortens suffering among those already close to death and has thus been called "the old man's friend".
