"You Can't Pray Away Mental Illness." - Mental Health Illness Advocate Agyei Ekundayo

02:53:46
After speaking in depth with the beautiful and phenomenal Agyei Ekundayo - a passionate Mental Health Illness Advocate - I was enlightened and exposed to a whole new plane of existence that I was unaware of when it came to the topic of Mental Illness. It is truly frightening to know how many individuals who believe that they are functional in life at an efficient level are operating no where near their potential and are actually living dangerously close to the breaking point that many simply just don't know how to recover from after being heavily medicated and chewed up by a system that doesn't work in their best interests. I also believe that it's safe to say that aside from the stressful factors that we all must endure in this modern day society that our denial in addressing our Mental Health Illnesses is the precursor to us having major problems in this area in the first place. The Black community is notorious for this brand of denial of the existence of Mental Health Illness because we oftentimes believe that we can "pray it away" or that if ignored long enough it will simply vanish. Add insult to injury by telling those in our families and inner circles that they should "just get over it" or encouraging them to medicate away the symptoms of severe depression never really addresses the core problem and in my opinion actually compounds it by introducing the chemical element to an emotional, mental and spiritual issue. A.J. ( Agyei Ekundayo) addresses all of these often ignored aspects and makes sense of an issue that hasn't be brought to the forefront as much as it should in this very informative, entertaining and thought provoking dialogue on The LanceScurv Show! Enjoy and do know that there is no situation that is too far gone that couldn't be corrected with the right type of help. There is no shame in reaching out for help and I guarantee you that it will make all of the difference in the world but YOU have to make the first step! Call 1.800.273.TALK now to start the process to getting back the life that you know you deserve! Peace, Righteous Love & Revolution Always, Your Brother, LanceScurv 407.924.8793 After a decade of innumerable volunteer commitments, Agyei Ekundayo fueled her earnest drive for community wellness education in 2007 while working as an Infant Mortality Case Manager at the Portsmouth Health Department in Portsmouth, VA. In that role, Agyei independently managed a pilot infant mortality reduction program whose target populations were low wealth, high risk maternal groups. There, she counseled mostly young girls about self-care, nutrition, pregnancy complications, premature bir th, and repeat pregnancy prevention. Agyei’s primary role centered on networking with community agencies to develop partnerships that would provide a continuum of resources to meet the gamut of basic human needs. Certified in Midwifery Assistance and Lamaze training, Agyei has served the medical community via service hours at a Christian Guatemalan orphanage. She studied Biology and Clark Atlanta University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Promotion from Weber State University. Past experiences feature a plethora of inclusion companion work for the Town of Chapel Hill, assistant grant writing intern for the South Central Perinatal Council in Lynchburg, VA and as a three time guest speaker for the Durham County Crisis Intervention Team training consumer panel. She also facilitated discussions for the North Carolina Mental Health Consumers Organization’s 2014 annual conference. She has most recently been at Carrboro’s North Park Church and lectured at North Carolina Central University to a graduate psychology class. Agyei, or “AJ” as she likes to be called, is gifted at assessing audience approach, and thus uses a lively mixture of informative interaction, humor, and visual display to connect with the crowd. AJ added Mental Health Awareness to her growing list of health disparity concerns when she “plunged full throttle” into the maze of America’s mental health care crisis, upon receiving an initial mental health diagnosis in late 2007. Since then and after 13 or so medications (she says she lost count), 10 different specialists (she says she wishes she could lose count), and 5 diagnoses (the docs cheated at Rock, Paper, Scissors); AJ bet herself good money that she could break the silence of African Americans hiding with mental illness and crusade for more effective legislation. AJ is an impassioned proponent of utilizing creative arts to cope with mental health illness. She recently published a memoir about her experiences growing up with cyclical mental illnesses. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Jennifer Holliday: Is She Wrong To Perform At Donald Trump's Inauguration? - The LanceScurv Show" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ED2WdLBu48Y -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Group Calls For More Advocacy For Prisoners Mental Health

00:53
On Wednesday amid the alleged suicide of former NE Patriot Aaron Hernandez an inmate advocacy group is calling on better oversight into the mental health services in Massachusetts prisons. Hernandez who had been convicted of murder for the 2013 slaying of Odin Lloyd was found hanged in his prison cell Wednesday. According to the Associated Press the executive director of Prisoners' Legal Services of Massachusetts, says although the Department of Correction has taken steps in the last decade to make it more difficult for inmates to take their own lives, "the department needs to hire more mental health professionals" according to Leslie Walker. http://hosted2.ap.org/APDEFAULT/386c25518f464186bf7a2ac026580ce7/Article_2017-04-19-US--Aaron%20Hernandez-Death-The%20Latest/id-b3dea1a769454b27af70600edddd3106 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

The Faces of Invisible Illness: An Awareness Plea

03:36
A few months ago Leah from spoonshares.com and Catherine from findingmymiracle.com had a late night conversation about the realities of chronic illness. That conversation turned into a poem, and now that poem has turned into a video involving many chronic illness bloggers. The goal of this video isn't self-pity, we simply want people to hear us. Because so often the struggles of the chronically ill are, well, invisible. In Order of Appearance: Catherine Richardson - Born and raised near Vancouver, Canada, Catherine is in her mid 20’s blogging and crocheting her way through all the unknowns of being a medical zebra and finding lots of opportunities to give her sense of humour some exercise along the way. http://findingmymiracle.com http://facebook.com/findingmymiracle Leah Holstein - A suburb-of-Philly native, Leah is a 25 year old tubie with gastroparesis and dysautonomia. She likes horses, Disney, and anything snarky. http://spoonshares.com, http://twitter.com/spoonshares Katie Brook - Living in Yorkshire, Northern England, Katie uses her love of writing to raise awareness about Myalgic Encephalopathy (ME/CFS) with the hopes of helping fellow sufferers feel a little less lonely along the way. http://www.katiebrook.com/, https://twitter.com/katiebr00k Amanda Bryant - From Virginia Beach, Virginia, at 25 years old Amanda suffers from a severe form of the invisible illness gastroparesis. In spite of things that try to knock her down the daily, she is a newly-wed with an amazing 8-year-old stepdaughter. Her and her husband also own a business that does custom reclaimed pallet and barn wood furniture. https://instagram.com/a_jbryant/, http://ccf.convio.net/site/TR/DIY/CCFTeamRaiser?px=2704347&pg=personal&fr_id=1360#.Vg4MJflViko Sarah Frison - Sarah is an integrative nutrition health coach from Belgium. As a result of living with gastroparesis, dysautonomia and gluten intolerance, she now uses her health coach and pastry chef training to share recipes, tips and tricks to help others live as well as possible despite their own dietary restrictions. http://www.sarahfrison.com/, https://twitter.com/SarahFrisonHC Sarah Rush - From Vancouver, Canada, 21 year old Sarah lives with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and many other complications and conditions that come along with it. She is a psychology student who loves music, photography and any opportunity to raise awareness. https://www.facebook.com/sarahsshout/timeline Samantha Brink -I’m a book worm trying to make my mark in the non-profit world. Humor helps me battle back my anxiety and cope with a mish-mashed disorder, which I’ve come to understand as “slightly broken but I’ll never surrender.” Blogging allows me to unleash my quirky side and share some of the madness from balancing my medical needs with my career, grad work, and family. https://keepstride.wordpress.com/, https://twitter.com/KeepStride Stephanie Torres - While Kansas will always be home, Stephanie has lived in Washington State for the last 14 years with her husband and 2 fur babies (aka her "angels"). Diagnosed with gastroparesis and dysmotility in 2008, she had no idea how much her life would change. By 2011 she required a feeding tube and in 2013 had no choice but to start IV nutrition. Her dreams may need to be altered but she continues to look for the silver lining, hosting awareness events, working as an advocate for others on nutrition support, and making fun and laughter a priority. http://mygastroparesisjourney.blogspot.ca/, https://www.facebook.com/Stephanie-Torres-Journey-with-Gastroparesis-209233942495196/timeline/ Lisa Tschetter - Living just outside of Vancouver, Canada, Lisa lives with POTS and gastroparesis. She has taken everything she has learned about coping with POTS and created a website to help others living with the same condition get a handle on their own symptoms. She loves playing the piano and has recently become hooked on crochet. http://lifewithpots.weebly.com/ Chanel White - From Seattle, Washington, Chanel is living with a terminal diagnosis of systemic scleroderma and a whole host of other complications. However, despite the fact that she is dependent on a feeding tube, a central line and supplemental oxygen, Chanel focuses on living as fully as possible and acts as a voice for others with scleroderma and invisible illness through her writing and speaking engagements. http://thetubefedwife.blogspot.ca/p/welcome.html, https://instagram.com/thetubefedwife Michaela Shelley - Michaela is your not so typical high school senior living in South Carolina. She is fighting Mitochondrial Disease, Dysautonomia(POTS), and Gastroparesis. Living with multiple chronic illnesses has changed her life dramatically but it's made her see a different view in the world and for that she is very thankful. http://chronicallyawesome23.blogspot.com Link to the original poem posted on Spoon Shares on 2/24/15: http://spoonshares.com/2015/02/invisibly-ill-an-awareness-plea/

Of all the medical specialties, Pediatrics has been the slowest to evolve due to its traditionally conservative viewpoint. However, with massive rise in chronic pediatric illness, more and more pediatricians (and parents) are looking for answers outside of the conventional box. In this episode, we traveled across the country to meet with pediatric practices and practitioners on the cutting edge of this medical evolution. First, we interview two sister pediatricians, Dr. Nicole Shorrock, who was featured on the June Forum: “Evolution of Neurology” and her sister, Dr. Katie Long, who practice together as part of a hospital-based practice near Sacramento, California. They share how they have been able to practice functionally inside a conventional medical system. Next, we met with Dr. Sheila Kilbane, an integrative pediatrician based on Charlotte, North Carolina who was featured on last summer's “Journey to 100”. Dr. Kilbane showed us around her practice and talked about antibiotics, gut heath and chronic illness. Also featured is Kimberly Shirk, a Physician's Assistant trained in functional and integrative medicine and member of our Practice Accelerator and Membership Practice Builder programs from Columbia, South Carolina. Kimberly has built an interdisciplinary pediatric clinic, including midwifery and functional medicine, using a low-cost direct primary care model — an evolution in the business model of integrative pediatrics! #SouthernStories: Britney Nesbit finds community as African American lesbian in Charleston

02:38
As a follow-up to meeting her on GLAAD's Southern Stories Summer Tour, GLAAD spoke by phone with Britney Nesbit, a student at The Medical University of South Carolina, about coming out as queer in the South, her work with minority populations, and what's next for LGBT equality in South Carolina. Health and healthcare are growing issues for the LGBT population, as LGBT people continue to be at greater risk for myriad health problems including HIV, obesity, substance abuse, and mental illness. These health inequalities are often related to the discrimination and stigma that LGBT people experience in day-to-day life. Advocates like Britney are working to ensure that healthcare providers receive proper training on LGBT issues and are open and accepting of all patients. Social Security Disability: What NOT To Do

04:59
http://www.lawmed.com/ http://www.YouTube.com/HensonFuerst/ The process of applying for Social Security Disability benefits is long and difficult. If you make the wrong move, you could RUIN your chances of getting benefits. In this video, David Henson--managing partner of HensonFuerst Attorneys--discusses what NOT to do during the application process. For more information about many other legal issues related to workers' compensation or personal injury, please visit our website at http://www.lawmed.com/. And don't forget to watch our other videos at http://www.youtube.com/hensonfuerst/. (Principal office of Henson & Fuerst, PA: 2501 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh, NC 27607) Applying for Social Security Disability is tough. At the time when you are feeling bad enough to be considered disabled, the agency seems to want to make the process as difficult as possible. If you want to make their job easier, I can help you with that. Hi, I'm David Henson, managing partner with HensonFuerst Attorneys. We help people through the long and exhausting process of attaining Social Security Disability benefits everyday. Of the many things we've learned along the way, one lesson is clear: The SSA looks for reasons to reject your claim. Here are the top 5 things you can do to help SS shut you out. 1. Don't get medical care for your conditions. 2. Do drugs or alcohol. 3.Break the law, or end up in jail. 4.Don't keep your lawyer up-to-date on your situation. 5. Miss deadlines or appointments. If you work hard all your life, and end up so injured or sick that you can no longer work, you may be eligible to receive Social Security Disability benefits. But just because you are eligible, that doesn't mean you are entitled. There is a world of reasons why your case may be not be approved...don't hand the courts a reason to deny your claim. This is David Henson, with HensonFuerst Attorneys. For more information about how we can help you fight for your SSD benefits, visit our website at LAWMED.com/SocialSecurityDisability/. Or, call us at 1-800-4-LAWMED. If you have questions, HensonFuerst has answers.

[News] WTF - Knotts pulls Fear VR after complaints it stigmatizes mental health

Halloween is the best time of year to test your mettle and see how scared you can get...and Knotts Scary Farm has always been a great place to do that...hell all haunted houses are a great way to do that. But its sad to see the company bend at the knee about their Fear VR: 5150 experience because of a few emails. 3 Questions For Anti Gunners

07:54
1997 was right in the middle of the assault weapons ban that banned all assault rifles and 30 round magazines. Since we unbanned and brought back assault rifles and 30 round magazines crime rate with guns has dropped by over 51 percent http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2015/08/31/shock-as-americans-bought-170-million-guns-violent-crime-fell-51/ There is 300,000 crimes commited with guns every year, that sounds like a lot until you realize there is more than 500,000 to 3 million violent crimes prevented with firearms every year in America. Guns are used to save lives way more than they are to take them. https://www.investors.com/politics/editorials/cdc-gun-violence-study-goes-against-media-narrative/ People say Australia banned guns and now they have much less gun crime. There gun crimes were falling in an identical rate before the gun ban even occured and the 1996 gun banprogram has not translated into any tangible reductions in terms of firearm deaths.. Also, only 1/3rd of people turned in there guns meaning there is 2/3rds of gun ownership is in the hands of criminals. This shows gun buyback programs and banning only disarms the good guy while the criminals stay armed to the teeth. That sounds like a terrible idea to me. This is also why Australia still has gun murders as much as they did in the past before the ban, the only difference now is people are less prepared to deal with that threat because many had been disarmed. https://www.nationalreview.com/2015/10/australia-gun-control-obama-america/ https://fee.org/articles/the-australia-model-for-gun-control-is-useless/?utm_content=69077999&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook Should we ban guns from the mentally ill? "The vast majority of people with mental health problems are no more likely to be violent than anyone else. Most people with mental illness are not violent and only 3%–5% of violent acts can be attributed to individuals living with a serious mental illness. In fact, people with severe mental illnesses are over 10 times more likely to be victims of violent crime than the general population." So no banning guns from people with ADHD, bipolar, depression, and most mental illnesses won't make a difference you'd just be removing constitutionial rights from innocent people who should have the right to self defense, especially because they are attacked more than normal individuals. https://www.mentalhealth.gov/basics/mental-health-myths-facts The average number of people killed in mass shootings when stopped by police is 14.29 The average number of people killed in a mass shooting when stopped by a civilian is 2.33 http://dailyanarchist.com/2012/07/31/auditing-shooting-rampage-statistics/ People like to say there is 91 "gun violence" deaths a day in America. Most of that is suicides. You cut out the suicides you are only left with 32 gun homicides a day in America. Gun homicides doesn't mean murder, it just means someones died with a firearm. This number includes self defense cases. You remove the self defense cases you are left with the ACTUAL gun murders, there is 10 gun murders a day in America. Compare that to abortions which killed 1,700 people a day in 2014. Or smoking that kills 1,300 a day. https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/homicide.htm All rifles combined kill fewer people each year than knives.. https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2016/crime-in-the-u.s.-2016/tables/table-12 Also handguns are used in crime way more than rifles are. People say there were "355 mass shootings in the US in 2017" That's almost a mass shooting every single day. Truth is in way more than half those cases no one was killed or even injured. In fact, the vast majority of those cases were suicides and accidental discharges near large groups of people and are claimed to be mass shootings. The FBI states that REAL mass shootings more than 4 people have to die to be classified as a mass shooting. If that's the case the vast vast majority of this statistic is false. There were a very tiny handful of mass shootings, not 355. https://www.massshootingtracker.org/data/2017 ✔️Merch: https://teespring.com/stores/mr-dappertons-store ✔️Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/MrDapperton ✔️PayPal: http://www.paypal.me/AshJamesWilliams ✔️Primary Channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/hxcrocker75 ✔️BitChute: https://www.bitchute.com/video/q3d1AXL0p3g/ ✔️Twitter: https://twitter.com/MrDapperton ✔️Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MrDapperton ✔️Email: AshJamesWilliams@gmail.com

Demi Lovato Fights for Mental Health Reform

00:44
Demi Lovato has been open about her own history of mental illness. Now, the 23-year-old, who is busy promoting her new album, Confident, is also taking time to advocate for mental health reform. Module 2: Blind/Visual Impairments and Service Animals

10:47
One in five Americans has some kind of disability. Disabilities can be apparent, such as a physical disability that requires a person to use a wheelchair, or non-apparent, such as deafness, or cognitive impairments including mental illness. People with disabilities may require reasonable accommodations in emergency response situations, and their rights to these accommodations are protected by federal disability rights laws. This module is part of a one-hour Disability Training for First Responders from the Ohio Disability and Health Program (ODHP). This training was produced at The Ohio State University Nisonger Center and is designed to give first responders the knowledge and skills required to safely and effectively assist people with disabilities. This training is designed for first responders including law enforcement, firefighters, and EMTs/paramedics. The training provides an overview of different disability types and accommodations that may be necessary, as well as an overview of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 as it relates to first responders. The training is broken into five short modules, which can be found at the links below: • Module 1: Introduction/General Disability Information and Tips • Module 2: Blind/Visual Impairments and Service Animals • Module 3: Communication Barriers • Module 4: Cognitive Impairments • Module 5: Mobility Impairments Additional disability resources for first responders can be found at: www.go.osu.edu/firstresponders. Signs You have Won Your Social Security Disability Hearing

09:21
“Will the Social Security disability judge approve my case?” I get this question daily on my YouTube channel and in emails or blog comments. There are some signs that would suggest that your case went well and I discuss these in this video. I definitely think you should pay a lot of attention to both the questions your judge poses to the vocational expert, and the answers offered by the vocational witness. I would also look at your judge’s approval rate record, and ask your attorney for an unbiased opinion about the strengths and weaknesses in your medical record. Finally, I would look at and think about your medical record in terms of how it answers the question of whether you would be a reliable employee at a simple, entry-level job. That is the threshold question in any Social Security disability hearing. #socialsecuritydisability #ssdi #disabilitybenefits #socialsecuritydisabilityhearing #ssi #jonathanginsberg #socialsecuritydisability attorney ===============FREE SURVIVAL KIT==================== Don’t know where to begin? You Have the Right to Remain Silent – California Bill Strengthens Miranda for Kids

04:51
Take Action: http://fairsentencingforyouth.org/miranda-rights-for-youth/ Currently in California, children—no matter how young— can waive their Miranda rights. When law enforcement conducts a custodial interrogation, they are required to recite basic constitutional rights to the individual, known as Miranda rights, and secure a waiver of those rights before proceeding. The waiver must be voluntarily, knowingly, and intelligently made. Miranda waivers by juveniles present distinct issues. Recent advances in cognitive science research have shown that the capacity of youth to grasp legal rights is less than that of an adult. This is especially true for very young, developmentally disabled, or cognitively delayed children, and for those with mental health problems.

The Third Industrial Revolution: A Radical New Sharing Economy

01:44:59
The global economy is in crisis. The exponential exhaustion of natural resources, declining productivity, slow growth, rising unemployment, and steep inequality, forces us to rethink our economic models. Where do we go from here? In this feature-length documentary, social and economic theorist Jeremy Rifkin lays out a road map to usher in a new economic system. A Third Industrial Revolution is unfolding with the convergence of three pivotal technologies: an ultra-fast 5G communication internet, a renewable energy internet, and a driverless mobility internet, all connected to the Internet of Things embedded across society and the environment. This 21st century smart digital infrastructure is giving rise to a radical new sharing economy that is transforming the way we manage, power and move economic life. But with climate change now ravaging the planet, it needs to happen fast. Change of this magnitude requires political will and a profound ideological shift. Callers talk to Jesse including a black conservative Republican who says the Left is trying to destroy Christianity and blacks. A caller says kids in Black Lives Matter are just confused — he saw Jesse’s interview with them on The Fallen State http://thefallenstate.tv The NAACP, Congressional Black Caucus, and BLM are using blacks. Parents who allow their adult children to stay home past 18 don’t love their kids. Apr 26 Hour 2: Ronny Jackson lynched; Family advocate denigrates father, too close to mother Ronny Jackson withdraws as VA nominee due to accusations from evil Democrats. Stand up and fight back. Caller “Pepe” says John Legend should have a nickname calling him a liar. He asks about white groups and men’s clubs which are under attack, then talks about white South Africans. He mentions Dinesh D’Souza and America. He says Nelson Mandela, MLK, and Arab Spring were communist-influenced. Jesse asks him to call again and get straight to his point. Caller Debbie of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, says black attitudes toward whites changed after the election of Barack Obama. She was raised not to speak in the South. Caller Jim of Columbus, OH, advocates for the natural family, and telling the truth about blacks. (Support The Fallen State on Patreon.) Jim talks about his parents, saying his father was a horrible example, an abuser, a drunk, womanizer, but his mother was a Christian. Jesse suggests he was too close to his mother. Jesse urges him to do the Silent Prayer. Caller Willie of Omaha, Nebraska, talks about white violence — white guys committing terror attacks. We need to get angry about it, Willie says. Jesse holds him over to third hour. Apr 26 Hour 3: Blacks Complain About White Violence & Walter Scott; Gym Discrimination! #MeToo Willie of Omaha, Nebraska, says that the average white guy will attack non-whites to ensure survival of the white race, after hearing Jesse or Trump demonizing nonwhites. Willie brings up Jesse talking about Walter Scott who was shot in the back by the cop after running and fighting. But people accuse the cops of being guilty without even hearing the trial. He brings up Rodney King, but Jesse points out he ran from the cops and put others’ life at risk. Jesse brings up Louis Farrakhan, whom Willie follows to a point. Caller Marie of New Jersey says she was a Democrat for 30 years with her family, but they voted for Trump, so she’s like a Kanye, in the basket of deplorables. Caller Tony of Chelsea, Michigan, tells a story of visiting Second Ebenezer Church in Detroit, led by Bishop Edgar Vann, and seeing Todd Hall, a “prophet” who was getting money from the blacks, and cursing people who frowned at him. Another caller Michael from Cary, North Carolina, says we have to be careful of false prophets. Jesse puts him on hold and plays a news report of two black men allegedly being wrongly kicked out of their LA Fitness gym. They’re crying “racial profiling.” Jesse said #MeToo! His gym Equinox hate him because he’s black and supports President Trump. Blacks aren’t supposed to leave the plantation. Caller Michael disagrees with Jesse about why fathers leave and mothers turning children away from the father. He brings up Walter Scott being “unarmed,” but Jesse points out he was running, and the cop didn’t know whether he was armed or not. Jesse announces BOND annual Men’s Conference Saturday, June 16, the day before Father’s Day. James and caller Darrell of Washington talk with Jesse about “the false community” of Kekistan, and rejecting identity politics, and symbols of Jesus with Pepe the Frog. James tells a little about 4chan. After SPIN! Video - 1/17/16 - "Are North Carolina's concealed carry laws too lenient?"

01:40
Question to Doug Raymond – Virginia’s Attorney General recently announced that his state will no longer grant reciprocity for concealed carry handgun permits because he thinks our state’s laws are too lenient. He specifically pointed out problems in allowing convicted felons, those with mental illness and other watered down provisions. As might be expected the gun lobby is outraged while gun control advocates are cheering. What do you think of Virginia’s decision?

The F Word: Catherine Clements at TEDxYouth@ColumbiaSC

Catherine is the recent co-creator of L'Autruche Chienne, a blog about feminism, the lgbtqia+ community, and other issues of social justice. While in college she plans on studying the areas of international relations, middle eastern studies, Arabic, and women's and gender studies. Other areas of interest include ableism, specifically mentalism and the stigma surrounding mental illnesses; racism, classism, homophobia, and the intersection of all of these within feminism. In the fall of 2013, Catherine will be entering the University of South Carolina Honors College. Email her at catherinenclements@gmail.com In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Faces of Medicaid: Bill - Tucson, Arizona

02:09
Bill was 27 years old and working as a nurse when he had his first mental break. He was admitted to the hospital, and diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Because of the severity of his condition, Bill had to stop working. He spends 30 hours a week in a day program, while taking medication to manage his condition -- both of which are covered by Medicaid. Medicaid provides health and long-term care coverage to nearly 70 million low-income Americans across the U.S. and is an integral part of the nation’s health care system. The stories in the Faces of Medicaid series (http://kff.org/faces-of-medicaid/) reveal the range of experience and diverse roles that Medicaid plays in the lives of Americans across the U.S. These stories are not intended to be an evaluation of the program, but to get underneath Medicaid’s statistics and provide insight into a range of individual experiences with the program.
