Struggling with Severe Mental Illness: The Story of Maisie

09:54
Sally Burke is a mother from Hull. But to see her daughter – 13-year-old Maisie – she is forced to make a 118-mile roundtrip to Sheffield, where Maisie is currently sectioned under the Mental Health Act and receiving treatment for paranoid schizophrenia. A national shortage of hospital beds means people in crisis are being shunted all over the UK for hospital care. This, tragically, includes children. If troubled young people having to wait for two years for mental health treatment wasn't bad enough, that they can often only be admitted to psychiatric wards that are miles away from their homes and families is even more terrifying. The figures surrounding the mental health of young Brits are alarming. The number of children being admitted to hospital for self-harm is at a five-year high. Admissions of girls aged 10-14 have increased by 93 percent in the last four years, to 5,953, while there's been a rise of 45 percent in boys. Within this same timeframe, NHS spending on children's mental health services in England has fallen by approximately £50 million. These have left local services in a desperate position, and the human consequence of this is felt by people like Sally and Maisie. We join the former as she makes the trek to Sheffield, its emotional toll only increased by the knowledge that just a mile away from her home is a unit that could have housed Maisie had its overnight care facility not been shut two years ago. Maisie is a short film about what happens to a family when a child is hit by severe mental health problems and a government breaks its promises. 1 out of 4 people suffer from mental illness. Look around you, and chances are out of the closest 3 people, 1 of you may be suffering from mental illness. Elizabeth speaks volumes from her own experience battling mental illness and how it is not a personal problem, but a communal one for which we are all responsible to address. Elizabeth is a junior at the University of Texas at Austin studying Chemistry. She is a pre-medical student hoping to one day run her own practice and use a combination of diet, therapy, and medicine to heal the physical and psychological wounds of her patients. She is the proud owner of her mini wiener dog Bella, who helped her heal and grow through some of her life's toughest battles. Christianity and Mental Illness | Trauma Talk

07:31
Our friend Jo is well experienced with Christianity and has her own story with a mental illness. When we think of treating mental illness we usually think of a variety of psychological approaches using therapy or medical intervention. In Jo's case, having strong foundation in Christianity wasn't the issue and not the cause of mental illness. If you have experienced this type of fundamentalism in your religion, especially if Christianity was your religion of choice, please comment and share your experiences with the world. I'm sure in many cases, faith is enough to battle mental illness but in the majority of cases, prayer alone is not enough to alter brain chemistry. Inmates with Mental Illness Tell Their Stories | AVID Jail Project

08:07
The AVID Jail Project hopes that the images and stories we share will bring attention to the crisis of mental health in our criminal justice system and will humanize an issue that is all too easily ignored. As Washington’s protection and advocacy agency, DRW is in a unique position to bring recording equipment into jails to capture and share the experiences of people with disabilities. Most members of the public will never enter a jail and will have no firsthand knowledge of how inmates with mental illness fare inside our jails. Inmates who self-identify as having or who have been diagnosed with a mental health condition, or their family members, may request the AVID Jail Project’s Technical Assistance Services. Can Mental illness PHYSICALLY affect you?

04:42
Pre-order My New Book Today! ARE YOU OK? http://bit.ly/2s0mULy Hey Kati. So I have a question, can mental illness/ illnesses physically effect you. I don't mean behavior I mean physical illness and pain. More specifically I've been diagnosed with depression and anxiety disorder and I wake up almost every morning feeling physically ill (sick heavy head) but more than that it's really hard to compare it to any other feeling (Im pretty sure its not an anxious stomach) but it's only when I wake up even when I've had a really good nights sleep. I stay off school because of it but it's hard to explain it to my dad so I just refuse to go. What Causes Mental Illness (Mental Health Awareness)

What causes mental illness disorders like Depression, Anxiety, Schizophrenia and PTSD to name a few?Spreading Mental Health through awareness is key to improving it among society. I went around and asked people 4 questions regarding mental illness to spread awareness and reduce social stigma. 1. Do you know someone that suffers or has suffered from an mental illness? 2. Do you know what causes those illnesses? 3. Should mental disorders be taken as seriously as physical ailments? 4. Have you or do you personally suffer from a mental illness? Mental Health stigma is a huge issue for men. May is mental health awareness month. The importance of mental health and stigma prevention is huge in combating the issues that arise from it. 9 Movies that Accurately Represent Mental Illness

08:15
Recently, I have been seeing movies that are coming out in theaters that are not helping break the stigma around mental illness. Instead, it is sending the message that we should fear individuals suffering with mental illness. Rather than give that movie the time of day I decided to talk about 9 movies that accurately represent mental illness. Enjoy! ☆ MOVIES ☆ - A Beautiful Mind - Black Swan - What About Bob? - Shutter Island - It's Kind of a Funny Story - Shutter Island - Girl Interrupted - Silver Linings Playbook - One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest ▷ FOLLOW ME ON ALL MY SOCIAL MEDIA SITES ○ WEBSITE: http://likekristen.com ○ FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/likekristen ○ TWITTER: https://twitter.com/likekristenn ○ INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/likekristenn ○ PINTEREST: https://www.pinterest.com/likekristen ○ SNAPCHAT: likekristen ▷ If you believe in mental health awareness and would like to contribute to the production of LikeKristen here is the link to my Patreon account. I am very excited to work with you! ▷ ABOUT ME Hello! My name is Kristen, I am 22 years old, from Sacramento CA, and I am graduating in the Spring with my BA in Psychology. I created this channel for three reasons that are very close to my heart. One, to help others be able to tell their stories and be advocates for mental health, to give recovery tips and tricks to help others find the help they need, and to spread awareness for mental health issues to fight the stigma surrounding it. The more we talk about mental illness the more normalized it will be in our society and the more people will not be ashamed to get help! ☆ DISCLAIMER ☆ I am not a professional. If you are seeking professional advice please go see your primary care doctor or therapist. The information in this post is based on personal experiences, personal knowledge, or research I have done on the subject. If this is an emergency please call 911, call your local crisis line https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/ or go to your nearest hospital.

What are the different types of mental illness?

18:35
Hello and welcome to The Little Blue Pot. In this video I will be providing a list of all the different types of mental illness that are out there. As you can imagine, the list is quite long so I can't go into full detail for every illness, however, I will be breaking each illness down in later videos. I just wanted to give people an idea of the different types as we progress on this journey together. Here is the list of mental illness along with when they appear in the video - these are groups of illness. E.g. Depression includes different types of depression etc. - Depression - 1:50 - Anxiety and Stress - 2:50 - Obsessive Compulsive Disorder - 4:00 - Phobias - 4:57 - Eating problems/disorders - 6:12 - Personality Disorders - 7:58 - Suicide and self-harm - 9:37 - Sleep problems - 12:18 - PTSD - Post Traumatic Stress Disorder - 13:30 - Bipolar - 15:14 - Psychosis and - Schizophrenia - 16:19 - Summary/full list - 17:30 Thank you for taking the time to watch this video - I hope to see you for the next one! Take care and I hope you have a safe, peaceful week. Gem x As with all my videos, I'm trying to explain everything as clearly as possible and provide examples from my life to help you understand. This Vlog is therefore from my perspective, but I do appreciate that not everyone will have had the same experience as myself - we are all different after all. I have also tried, where applicable, to reference everything correctly, but we are all human and make mistakes - please stick with me. Are Personality Disorders Different From Mental Illness?

04:16
Pre-order My New Book Today! ARE YOU OK? http://bit.ly/2s0mULy A personality disorder defined as: a deeply ingrained and maladaptive pattern of behavior of a specified kind, typically manifest by the time one reaches adolescence and causing long-term difficulties in personal relationships or in functioning in society. Without treatment, the behavior and experience is inflexible and usually long-lasting. The pattern is seen in at least two of these areas: 1. Way of thinking about oneself and others 2. Way of responding emotionally 3. Way of relating to other people 4. Way of controlling one’s behavior Personality disorders are categorized into 3 main groups: 1. Cluster A- which holds the personality disorders that can cause us to act in odd or socially withdrawal. This includes Paranoid PD, Schizoid PD and Schizotypal PD. 2. Cluster B - holds the emotional, erratic or overly dramatic PDs - like Antisocial PD, Borderline, Histrionic PD, and Narcissistic. Cluster C - which holds the more anxious or fearful personality disorder - like Avoidant PD, & Dependent PD. On the other hand, the term mental illness refers to a wide range of mental health conditions: these are disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behavior. Therefore, mental illness is a collective term that refers to around 200 types of mental conditions, which are sub-categorized into 5 main classes: 1) anxiety disorders, 2) mood disorders, 3) psychotic disorders/schizophrenia, 4) eating disorders and 5) dementia. Among all groups, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness. Many people have mental health concerns from time to time. But a mental health concern becomes a mental illness when ongoing signs and symptoms cause frequent stress and affect your ability to function. In conclusion, a personality disorder is a mental illness, but a very serious one. The reason I say it’s a serious one is because personality disorders are pervasive not episodic. They have been in our lives since we were young, and affect much of our day to day life, not to mention our relationships. Many people argue that the causes of personality disorders differs from other mental health issues, but I honestly think that’s too tricky a thing to conclude. Different people have different coping skills and resiliency. That’s why siblings can go through the same things and come out very differently. We are all unique, and our mental health is not immune from that. That’s why it’s important that we see a professional, be properly diagnosed and get the treatment that works best for our struggles. Know that regardless of what you are suffering from, the sooner we reach out for help and get the assistance we need, the better. All mental illnesses benefit from therapy and medication. So find a treatment that works best for you!
